Matthew 22:28

Therefore in the resurrection whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

Matthew 22:28 belongs to the Sadducees' attempt to entangle Jesus amid challenges concerning His authority and the resurrection. It asks whose wife a woman successively married to seven brothers will be in the resurrection, since each had married her. The question was designed to make the bodily resurrection seem absurd and turn people against the doctrine. It rests on the mistaken assumption that the resurrection restores earthly marriage and continues the same relationships, affairs, and life as before death.

In answer, Jesus teaches that those who are resurrected do not marry. The passage affirms a literal resurrection in which the dead will hear the Son of God's voice, come out of their graves, and live again. Jesus met this question, like the other challenges put to Him, with a plain and intelligent answer that brought precious light to the people. The challenge and the warnings surrounding it show that rejecting the Son of God leads to judgment unless one repents.
