Matthew 22:31

But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

The verse comes as part of answers to questions meant to entangle Christ, and His plain and intelligent replies brought precious light to the people and sowed seeds of truth. It introduces what God Himself has spoken touching the resurrection of the dead, appealing to God's words to Moses claiming to be the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as Scripture proof of the resurrection. God's continuing claim to be their God means He is not the God of the dead but of the living, death does not end His relationship with His people, and the dead live unto Him. God regards His purpose for them as already accomplished.

The dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God, rise from their graves to live again unto immortal life, and God will be their God and they shall be His people in a close and tender relationship with Him. This promise embraces the faithful dead from Abel onward. By this Scripture it is shown that denial of the resurrection rests on mistaken premises and on ignorance of the Scriptures and of the power of God. The warnings and teachings connected with this appeal apply to people in every age who reject the Son of God as Redeemer, and the judgment they foreshadow will be theirs unless they repent.
