Matthew 24:5

For many shall come in my name, saying, I am Christ; and shall deceive many.

On the Mount of Olives Jesus warned that many would come claiming His name and identity, saying they are Christ, and would deceive many, making guarding against false claims about Him a sign preceding the end. This warning belongs to His outline of last-day perils and signs in Matthew 24:3-8, given to prepare later believers to discern their own time and remain watchful rather than indifferent. It was first fulfilled between His death and the siege of Jerusalem when false messiahs promised deliverance to the Jewish nation and misled many, and the same deceptions have recurred through the ages and will recur in the last age. As the end approaches these satanic delusions increase with great power, wonders and miracles threatening even the very elect, yet those who heed His teaching have an infallible guide and firm foundation that withstands trial. Therefore believers must not seek the secret time of His coming but must study the prophecy, prepare themselves, perform their duty, recognize events as they occur, and urgently warn the world without delay.

Olivet Discourse Setting

On the Mount of Olives, shortly before Gethsemane, Jesus answered the disciples' question about when the temple would be destroyed and what sign would mark those events and His coming and the end of the world. The discourse recorded in Matthew 24 and 25 looks down through time from His departure until His return to the last days and the actions of saints and sinners. It is a discourse of prediction and warning spanning the history of the world and the church from His first advent to His second. It foretold for His followers suffering, humiliation, reproach, and persecution like their Master, and opened with the solemn warning to take heed that no one deceive them.

The prophecy sketches the history of the present dispensation and of the world and the church from the first advent to the second, through to the complete restitution of all things, briefly covering the whole dispensation. It includes the destruction of Jerusalem, persecution, signs in the heavens, and Christ's coming in His kingdom, with the thrilling and momentous closing scenes more particularly dwelt upon. Jerusalem's destruction is treated as a type of the world's final destruction by fire.

The chapter teaches that Christ's second coming is still future, literal, personal, bodily and visible, coming upon the clouds in glory and majesty with angels and the Father's glory to gather His elect from the four winds. It rejects the claim that He came at Jerusalem's destruction, and joins the promise to the warning to watch and be ready because the day and hour are known to the Father only. It portrays the condition of the church at His coming to arouse earnest zeal in the heart of the true believer. It uses signs in the heavens, on earth, in the church and in the wicked world to show that coming is near, while its time remains unknown.

The verse belongs to Christ's outline of events that will come upon the world and to the perils of the last days and to signs foretold in Matthew 24:3-8 to prepare later believers for the great conflict. Those signs are instruction to be discerned in one's own time and a reason to remain watchful rather than indifferent, because the signs of the end are rapidly being fulfilled before the Son of man is revealed in heaven. Their warnings show the urgency of warning those perishing in sin.

Claimants and Their Deceptions

Many will come in Christ's name, claiming His name and identity and saying they are Christ, and will deceive many. The saying is a warning to take heed and be on guard against deception and false claims about Christ so as not to be led astray. This deception is among the signs preceding the end and belongs to Christ's signs of the times before His coming. Those signs are taking place in the world and were common in the period just before His return, though people scarcely consider their significance.

Between Jesus' death and Jerusalem's siege false messiahs appeared claiming to be the Messiah and the Christ. They claimed to work and perform miracles and announced deliverance for the Jewish nation, misleading and deceiving many people. The same kinds of deception have recurred through the ages and will recur in the last age, for events surrounding Jerusalem's overthrow will happen again.

These impostors claim the title and worship due to the Redeemer. They perform remarkable healings and claim revelations from heaven that contradict Scripture. Their deception reaches rulers and ordinary people alike. The warning also covers those falsely claiming to come in Christ's name or to represent Him and His authority, and messages claiming to come from God or heaven without the surest unmistakable evidence. False claims of holiness and sinlessness can also deceive, for those making them are not doers of the Word and their teaching is a delusion. It applies to a man who claimed to be Jesus while denying that Jesus would return bodily and visibly, whereas His second coming is literal and personal, upon the clouds in glory and majesty accompanied by angels and the Father's glory. Another man who claimed to be Christ showed by threatening harm to those who disputed him that his claim was false and bore no likeness to Christ. Therefore believers must stay watchful and alert, discern the source of such messages, and rely firmly on God's Word and Scripture rather than unverified human claims.

Fulfillment Past and Present

The first fulfillment came between Christ's death and the siege of Jerusalem, when false messiahs appeared claiming to work miracles and announcing deliverance for the Jewish nation, and misleading many. The same kinds of deception have recurred through the ages and will recur in the last age, so that the events surrounding Jerusalem's overthrow will happen again.

Satanic delusions and deceptions will increase as the end of earth's history approaches, with many coming in the last days claiming to be Christ and many being deceived. The signs Jesus predicted to herald His second advent belong to His outline of the last chapters of earth's history, which are rapidly and fast fulfilling. Those specified signs were common in the period just before His return, including in 1907, though people scarcely considered their significance and outcome while the last conflict of earth's history was underway.

The signs Christ foretold in Matthew 24:3-8 are taking place in the world as He predicted at this important period of time, and by them the closing scenes of earth's history may be recognized. Their rapid and fast fulfillment shows the end is near, the great day of the Lord is right upon us, and Christ's coming is at hand. Many are indifferent to them, yet people in the world need to know this fulfillment through books containing present truth and through a worldwide warning message given with urgency and without delay.

Seeing this unmistakable fulfillment taking place today shows that Christ's coming is at hand and that the church is living in the last days when the end of all things is at hand, with stormy times before it. Therefore there should be no word of unbelief or discouragement, but faith is to grow stronger as believers prepare and wait for Christ's appearing and continue their work until it is finished while remaining alert to the dangers of the time. Those who humble themselves and keep their eyes fixed on God will be safely hidden with Christ, and when He appears they will appear with Him in glory. The fulfillment calls the church to arouse, and the predictions of Matthew 24 must be studied and brought before believers and unbelievers by ministers and teachers, leaving matters of lesser consequence because its truths decide eternal destiny and involve questions of eternal importance.

Deception in Last Days

In the last days Satan's agents will employ great power with wonders and miracles to deceive, so powerfully that even the very elect are threatened with being misled. Those who heed Christ's words in this warning and follow His guidance will not be deceived. His teaching is an infallible guide and a firm foundation that withstands trial and temptation.

The warning belongs to a time of widespread trouble and spiritual decline, when false prophets also deceive and many turn against one another. Many will come in Christ's name falsely claiming to be Christ and will lead many into deception. Those who endure to the end through that time will be saved.

Christ foretold the going forth of deceivers and false prophets in the latter days to draw away disciples after them. The warning was given to make His disciples wide-awake to the signs of the times and prepared for coming events, and it comes down through the centuries to this time, belonging especially to those concerned in these things. It was repeated several times for that purpose. The going forth of deceivers brings more danger to disciples than persecution and must be guarded against more carefully than any other peril.

The seducers come with pleasing, fanciful, scientific problems and specious doctrinal errors prepared by Satan to dim spiritual perception, to undermine confidence in the truth of God, and to make truth indistinguishable from error. They target those with little experience of the Holy Spirit and those satisfied with limited spiritual knowledge. Unless believers are on guard, the enemy disguised as an angel of light will lead them into false paths. Those who stand faithful to the truth specified in Revelation will meet errors so specious that, if possible, even the very elect would be deceived.

Deception and departure from the faith will come, but Christ's warning enables His people to recognize the trial rather than be taken by surprise. It assures them that the Lord understands their experience and will not abandon them to the enemy. It belongs to His warning about last-day heresies and delusions, amid which sacred, eternal truth stands plain. God works through human agents to fulfill the prophecies.

God's people must therefore be spiritually discerning and must not follow worldly policies or trust those who disobey God's commandments. They must refuse to place confidence in such claimants and receive only those who give the surest evidence that they are doing the work God appointed them to do. The warning applies to messages that claim to be from God without unmistakable evidence, so believers must stay watchful, discern their source, and rely firmly on God's Word. When messages claim to come from heaven there must be alert discernment and firm reliance on Scripture rather than on unverified human claims.

Watchfulness and Warning Mission

The warning to take heed that no one be deceived means not prying into the secret time of the coming but heeding Christ's words, preparing for that great event, faithfully doing individual duty, and giving His warnings to others. The signs He gave of His second advent are being fulfilled in the last days, so work is to be continued until finished with alertness to the dangers of the time. Those signs and warnings heralding His advent call for faithful watchmen to attend to prophecy and recognize events taking place, so as not to be surprised or unready when He appears.

The predictions of Matthew 24 are to be studied and brought before believers and unbelievers alike, for their fulfillment is taking place today and its unmistakable evidence shows the coming is at hand and calls the church to arouse. Ministers and teachers are to present this prophecy, leaving matters of lesser consequence, because its truths decide eternal destiny and involve questions of eternal importance. The chapter outlines what is to come upon the world including the perils of the last days, showing the urgency of warning those perishing in sin. It is Christ's warning about coming judgments and the end, demanding careful attention and warning the world that the end is near. These signs of the nearness of His coming are rapidly being fulfilled, calling for urgent missionary work and for the warning message to be given without delay. They are clearly pointed out in prophecy to His householders, who are to prepare the way for His advent by helping in every possible way those for whom He gave His life.

The signs of the times prove in the light of prophecy that the great day of the Lord is right upon us, requiring a message of mercy and warning to go forth now to awaken the world from its sleep of death with the day of judgment kept before the people. Opposition must be confronted, for false witnesses will invent lies, yet they cannot harm those who labor for souls with strengthened faith because Jesus is by their side bidding them be of good cheer for He has overcome the world. Unceasing vigilance is needed, lest those who once rejoiced in the truth make shipwreck of faith and be reduced to a blank, cheerless condition without God and without hope like the inhabitants of the old world.
