Parable of the Talents in a CourtyardBible World

Matthew 25:22

He also that had received two talents came and said, Lord, thou deliveredst unto me two talents: behold, I have gained two other talents beside them.

He who had received two talents traded faithfully with what was delivered and gained two other talents beside them, doubling the trust and returning principal with increase. The talents are the Master's own money and goods lent on trial, embracing every natural and spiritual gift, ability, opportunity, time, means and light to be kept holy and put to work for His glory. God entrusts to every man according to his several ability, five to him who can use five and two to him who can improve two, and He requires faithful improvement in proportion to what was given and not according to gifts never had. The faithful two-talent servant receives the same commendation and reward as the five-talent servant, for the Lord measures faithfulness and earnest effort and not amount. To gain other talents is to put light and influence out to use in saving souls, so that those won to truth in turn labor for others and the influence constantly multiplies. Every person must give account at the reckoning for use, neglect or misuse, and talents increase only through faithful wholehearted use while burying leaves them weakened and lost.

Parable Setting and Context

The report of the two-talent servant belongs to the parable of the talents, which represents the kingdom of heaven and teaches accurate use of the abilities and resources entrusted to each person. It was spoken to the disciples in Christ's public teaching shortly before entering Gethsemane, after a day of work and questioning by the Pharisees with predictions and warnings, early in the morning after crossing the mount. It was the last of many parables, given as a warning about working while opportunity lasts and about the second appearing in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. God reckons with each servant individually and gives reward proportionate to how entrusted talents have been used, for the servant with two talents was accountable for using what his lord gave and gaining two more. The whole life's work is bound up with the second coming and the searching judgment, to which each day and hour contributes its account.

The parable follows the parable of the ten virgins, where five were wise and five foolish for taking lamps with no oil. Mere profession of belief in the Scriptures does not save, for devils also believe and tremble without the right kind of faith, and a profession of faith without good works has no saving value. Its waiting period ending with the bridegroom's coming was connected with the 1844 midnight cry and call to prepare to meet the Lord, including the light of 1882 calling the church to account. The opposite of the faithful gain reported is the man with one talent hiding it in the earth out of fear centered on self, putting all thought and burden on himself. True faith goes to work, takes up the burdens lying nearest, labors together with God, lets God build the life for time and eternity, and exerts a molding influence by solid character and right disposition rather than a fractious, fretting temper. Stewardship should therefore lead to practical generosity and cooperation in saving sinners, not covetousness or worship of wealth, for talents bring responsibility to use them in sharing truth and serving others, and money faithfully used and increased for His service must be answered for, with failure to support His cause making unfaithful stewards.

The instruction in Matthew 25:14-46 is to be studied and compared with the life record, receiving prayerful, critical attention. Every man must put away boasting, because self-sufficiency is fearfully dangerous and makes the words of Christ of no effect, calling instead for obedience and humble service without self-trust. All blessings and gifts come from God and belong to Him, to be used not according to human judgment but according to directions in God's Word studied out for building up the cause of truth. Different gifts are entrusted to different individuals, and with talents given, be they many or few, each is to do his utmost to glorify God by doing his best to be perfect, keeping self out of sight, weaving in no thread of selfishness, cherishing no worldly ambition, and holding Christ before the world. Responsibility is not limited to a favored or especially talented few, for every servant is entrusted with work and goods, including spiritual, mental and physical abilities as well as influence, position, possessions, affections and sympathies, however small, to be used rather than hidden through the Holy Spirit for the salvation of souls.

Watching for the return means diligent work rather than idle waiting or idle expectancy. The servants represent followers who belong to Him and are entrusted with service, receiving amounts suited to ability, and must answer for how they meet that responsibility, with the two-talent servant reporting that he put his trust to use and gained two more. Definite instruction prepares disciples for their work, and as Master He gives the same instruction now, calling for earnest and vigilant work to prepare the way for the second coming by waiting, watching, praying and working, with personal consecration through cultivated and cherished heart-holiness. It requires faithfulness with no spiritual declension, continual striving to increase capabilities to do better work, using every facility provided to labor intelligently, and those who bury talents will be replaced by workers who put resources to good use. Readiness includes unselfish, watchful labor in His cause, caring for the broken-hearted and working while day lasts before the night when no one can work.

Christian character is not perfected by prayerful meditation alone, nor does religion consist only in constant activity. Personal piety must be cultivated alongside diligent service, blending personal piety with earnest outward work. By piety joined with diligent service character is developed by grace unto eternal life. The servant with fewer qualifications succeeds by this ideal, for loyalty and diligent, useful work are valued, and talents improve and multiply as they are used in the Master's service.

What Talents Are

The talents are more than earthly temporal employments and more than worldly goods. They are a loan from the Master, His own money, goods, property and capital lent in trust and on trial as a stewardship of His grace with endowments for a sacred higher trust where eternal interests are involved. They were secured by His own blood and sufferings to obtain entire obedience, belong to Him stamped with His image and superscription, and are to be kept pure, clean and holy, valued, turned to account for Him who bestowed them, used to His glory to advance His glory, invested in work for Him and not buried in worldly enterprises nor used merely to accumulate worldly goods. They are privileges and gifts given for a while to prove and try whether men will love and reverence the Giver, to be returned with increase, and true use increases humility, obedience to the divine will and wisdom unto salvation, while claiming ability as one's own in self-sufficiency and independence and idolizing the blessing until affection is withdrawn from God turns the gift into a curse. Even the humblest service becomes a consecrated gift when exercised in doing the Master's bidding to promote His glory, and withholding talents from His service is robbery of God burying the Lord's goods in the earth for which account must be rendered.

The talents embrace every natural or spiritual gift and ability whether original or acquired. They include life itself preserved every moment, health, reason, physical and mental strength, capabilities, opportunities, time and every moment as seed for eternity, position, possessions, intellect, affection, speech, sympathies, influence, wisdom, and the light of present sacred truth. Each person must employ what has been entrusted in Christ's service to the fullest rather than hidden or devoted to selfish gain, and cannot transfer that stewardship to another. To every man God has given his work and moral and spiritual capital to trade upon where he can in best possible service for the Master, and no one is accountable for talents never had nor should complain of smallness of gifts, for one talent well used will gain others and develop character.

The talents specifically include means, money, property, wealth, houses, lands, large revenue, strength as capital like money, ability to acquire wealth, brain power, mechanical power, thinking power, education, capabilities, genius, tact, skill and treasure as the Lord's own property, and the two talents denote differing gifts of this kind. They are temporal gifts and possessions lent for wise use in God's service, and faithful investment advances His cause with heavenly treasure corresponding to what is invested in heavenly purposes. Choosing instead to accumulate earthly riches and give sparingly to God's work means accepting less heavenly treasure, while unselfish service improves and increases talents under God's direction and in cooperation with others for the good of the whole. Qualities and powers of the mind are to be cultivated and wisely directed to accomplish the purpose for which God gave them, do the greatest good and reflect glory to God, treasured, improved and strengthened by exercise to feed other minds and bless the world.

The talents include light, knowledge of the truth, spiritual advantages, precious privileges and opportunities given even to the smallest disciple and to the church. They include the treasures of the householder, the Word of the living God, precious jewels of truth gathered from His Word, gems of truth brought into the character, justification and righteousness by faith, the grace of Christ, the riches of Christ, the Holy Spirit received by asking, and His wisdom given to learners as little children. God commits talents to individual trust as a measure of light and privileges including exalted privileges and heavenly attainments purchased at immense cost and freely presented for acceptance, with each held individually accountable to improve what was entrusted and render improvement back to God. The two talents are every entrusted capability, the grace of God and every ray of light from the written word lent to be traded upon to the uttermost in ministry in word and doctrine, and burying the light and failing to improve the lent talent is unfaithful stewardship deciding future destiny.

The talents include the body and its organs, flesh and blood, nerve and muscle, mind, intellect, reasoning powers, mental, moral and physical strength, perceptive faculties, voice and the talent of speech, words more precious than gold and silver, ability to sing, ability to write a book, pen, press, purse, social advantages and natural gifts, all remaining under God's authority to be cultivated and employed to the utmost. They are the faculties of the mind, power of speech and natural powers of mind and body given for elevation of receiver and associates, not to be perverted to evil but treasured, made best use of individually and constantly improved by exercise. The physical, mental and moral powers multiply as employed for His glory with the good brought to others as part of increase, and every man, woman and child from lowest to highest has varied talents to be sanctified to the Master's use. Worth does not come from number but from appreciation and employment, the smallest gift not to be ignored, with all who faithfully and humbly use what is entrusted in dependence upon Him receiving wisdom.

Time is a sacred talent committed in trust to be improved as He directs and returned with additions. It is given to promote His glory not self-gratification or selfish pleasure, and hours spent on self-gratification and selfish pleasure are lost for eternity. Wasting minutes in indolence, apathy, needless talking, slow work, doing nothing to benefit self or bless others, or hindering others is dishonest before God and sin for which account must be given. Gathering moments as jewels in useful work even without high wages, showing diligence and accepting what can be gotten, fulfills the trust and would bring much greater prosperity to missionary enterprises. Every moment of time is of value to be put to good use in quiet work for others, and even helpful uplifting speech is a talent whose failure to improve brings loss.

The talents include reasoning faculties and divine rays of light left as hereditary trusts by patriarchs, prophets and apostles to be gathered up and sought as hidden treasure. They include honor and exaltation in high positions entrusted to be used rightly, with perversion to wrong use in ingratitude bringing woe as abuse turning gifts into weapons to oppress, assault sacred things, cover injustice and lead minds from sacred restraints. They include inventive genius and human inventions such as rapid travel serving in preparation for the great day. They include the religion of Christ in the heart entrusted to the physician for missionary work, to be put out to the exchangers and never hidden, by weaving consolation into ministration and leading diseased souls to the living fountain, when employed aright reproducing itself a thousandfold.

The talents are gifts and powers entrusted especially to youth, including reasoning powers of children and youth, to be cultivated into steadfast Christian manhood firm, unwavering, rooted and grounded in truth for the help designed for the church, requiring full consecration. Parents are responsible to help them value opportunities, with education preparing them and developing them for missionary work. Talents also include ordinary duties at home and daily work that blesses others and glorifies God, with neglected opportunities still counted in the reckoning. Talents include the precious opportunity to speak a word in season, which must be watched for and used to produce a thousandfold as the minister of righteousness, for neglect leaves it unused, loses most precious opportunities and lets the golden privilege pass.

God gives abilities and opportunities to acquire more to help self and others and do appointed work. Varied gifts are to be used actively to reach people and share knowledge, with development and practical service bringing increase as the gain of two more shows. Such work among those served also brings fresh understanding and experience.

Gifts can be despised, abused, misapplied, perverted or neglected instead of faithfully used for God's glory and others' good. Every physical and mental capability is to be preserved for His glory, and those who pervert or neglect will answer for good they could have done through provision in Christ. Misuse brings accountability and calls for repentance before judgment, warning against boasting in abilities, position or achievements, for selfish use for personal gain perverts purpose and can cause great harm. What God places in hands is entrusted property for faithful stewardship for His cause and blessing others rather than selfish indulgence.

Entrusted talents include abilities of young men and women, and faithfulness means training them for missionary work with earnest care. Older members and ministers are to devise plans whereby younger members cooperate with them with all having a part, kindling live interest by appointed work rather than merely long sermons. The young are to be trained to do what is appointed and week by week bring reports telling experience and success through Christ, making meetings full of interest.

Life itself is an entrusted talent to be appreciated, dedicated to the Lord and used in Christ's lines. It is God's property by creation and by redemption when the only-begotten Son, the Majesty of heaven, paid the ransom with His life for deliverance from Satan. Faithfulness means studying how best to honor God with it and preserving every power, organ, sinew, muscle and portion of living machinery for His use, rendering on awaking the fruit of the lips in thank offerings. The life God preserves every moment, causing the heart to beat, watching over sleep and shielding the vital current, with affections, bodily strength and every faculty, is required to be used not abused, not taken in one's own hands to degrade being to please self.

Talents belong to God and are lent not owned, and they include money, means, property, abilities, mental powers, peculiar gifts, time, reason, strength, tenderness of heart, influence, education, life, health, grace, light and truth. Christ's gifts first placed in apostles' hands have passed from generation to generation to His workers, with money as one entrusted good to bring truth and rescue souls. Lent treasures including money and means are to be used to advantage His cause by liberal tithes, gifts and offerings, restricting wants and supplying workers near and far, while withholding blocks truth from regions beyond. Light and truth and fresh bright ideas through the Holy Spirit are lent to be reflected and imparted not buried, with imparting bringing increase of wisdom and brighter thoughts.

The gift of speaking that can reach hundreds through the printed page must be used and not left buried by silence and seclusion in contentment with a few. It must be brought into use and not left almost buried, not sinking down when confidence and expected freedom fail, but aroused to act from duty and importance of truth rather than feelings because the gift is needed.

Abilities and grace are given by Christ to every person and not only to ministers, to be used for God's glory and others' good at home and abroad. Each is accountable to return what was entrusted increased through faithful use, husbanding carefully what belongs to the Lord and putting out to the exchangers including giving means to carry forward foreign missions. God's work belongs to every believer including the uneducated, with abilities to serve Christ and help others hear salvation and no place for idleness.

Even a small measure of faith exercised in helping others is a talent the Lord will increase when put to work. A consecrated humble zealous individual, with conception of duty enlarged by the Spirit and burning zeal for Christ, communicates light and grace to the whole church. Those given two talents must improve every talent and multiply them by energetic proper use for fellow men, walking in light of full varied experience.

Excellent qualifications for work as a Christian physician are God's trust to be sanctified and improved under the Spirit. When consecrated under government of the Spirit they can be wisely improved and made to increase in His service, while self having supremacy and being left to self misuses the trust and grieves the Holy Spirit.

Talents are God-given qualifications, reasoning faculties and duties in each path requiring wise improvement by wise faithful discharge of duty. Leaving them unemployed leads to mental lethargy, indolence and contentment with superficial attainments even in men of good qualifications, a danger growing where incentives are lacking. Faithful improvement needs active engagement and plenty of opportunity to work, guarding against idleness and shallow attainment.

Distribution According to Ability

God commits to every person his own work in cooperation with Christ for the salvation of souls, and each has a special place designated on earth where to work for God as surely as a place is prepared in the heavenly mansions, with a place in the eternal plan of heaven. He gives not capriciously but to every man according to his several ability, fitting each for the work to which he is called, five to him who has ability to use five, two to him who can improve two, and one to him who can wisely use only one. He is a rich giver and rich provider and fountain of inexpressible love, not a harsh judge and exacting creditor who takes back all improvement, bestowing gifts in accordance with the ability of the human agent to use them and placing men where they can trade upon His goods. Those given only one or two talents should not envy or try to take on the work of those given five, but should use their own gifts well with humility and contentment, for no gift however humble is to be despised and each can faithfully use opportunities in his own sphere.

He measures ability and lays just what fits, expecting improvement and returns according to what a man has and not according to what he has not, and He is equally honored by the improvement of each trust whether great or small. Each servant must account personally for entrusted gifts, and reward or punishment corresponds to how those gifts were used or abused, with the servant entrusted with two expected to use them diligently and return the gain made with them. The faithful with what is given is entrusted with greater responsibility and still more, growing to the full measure in Christ, while greater talents require greater returns and greater means bring greater responsibility, and no one is to remain idle. Gaining the other two talents means being a provider and not only a consumer, using bountiful provisions to relieve suffering human beings bought with the blood of His only begotten Son that believers should have everlasting life, laying up a good foundation for the time to come while the world as a vineyard returns its fruit in season.

God does not demand five talents of gain from one entrusted with two, but requires faithful improvement in proportion to what was given, not according to how much one possesses. All He asks is to take up one line of work after another as it presents itself, keep spiritual senses awake to the wants of the cause, give self and entrusted money to advance the kingdom, and use reasoning powers with purpose to save souls, cultivating talents by exercising them, for those feasting on truth for years must communicate light or be pronounced slothful, and feeling unqualified is no excuse since consecration gives wisdom and utterance adversaries cannot gainsay. Value depends not only on amount but on proportion to the giver's means and motive, and responsibility is measured by what was entrusted not gifts never had, so even small returns are accepted when the gift is put to good use. Faithfulness not amount of labor or greatness of task is what matters, no gift is too small to use, and diligent use develops gifts while cultivating them increases knowledge and perception.

Different amounts reflect varied gifts, abilities and spheres of influence, not different expectations of faithful improvement, for the different amounts represent differing gifts and abilities. Every member has some special gift and fitting work, none must belittle another's gifts or work, people are not expected to have identical abilities or work in identical ways, and the Lord judges what was entrusted and how it was used. God puts men and women in possession of precious gifts, giving different gifts to different ones so not all have the same strength of character or depth of knowledge, and each is to use his gifts however small in the Master's service as the wise trader of entrusted goods. He desires every talent developed and gives ordinary people skill and understanding for useful work when willing to be guided, and talents represent different abilities and resources to be increased through constant use in advancing His work and meeting others' needs.

God does not expect the lowly, uneducated, poor, feeble, sick or suffering to do what He never gave power to do nor active energies that bodily weakness forbids. One restricted to one talent who uses it well with earnest fidelity is accepted according to what he has and not according to what he has not, and even feeble workers diligently trading will greatly increase. Having but one talent calls for all the more earnest effort, and trading wisely on the one entrusted causes God to give ability to use a larger number, while faithfulness in small duties prepares for greater service, strengthens character, and encourages others without disparaging. Faithful use leads to further responsibility and greater service, talents increase as put to work for His glory, and dependence on Christ as branch on vine enables blessing others, with greater means bringing greater responsibility and faithfulness requiring the same tact and diligence in God's work as in temporal matters by laboring whole-souled to convert others from error. What is possessed is lent not grounds for boasting, those entrusted with more are accountable for greater returns, God tests whether men acknowledge Him as giver, and use determines destiny, for talents are trusts proportioned to known powers to be wisely improved.

The two talents represent church members with ordinary ability who are the light of the world and are expected according to that ability to enlighten and bless others. Whether rich or poor, great or humble, God calls them into active service, depends upon the church for forwarding His work, expects His followers to do duty as intelligent beings, and every trained mind, disciplined intellect and jot of ability is needed in saving souls, a meaning to be explained to all. Being talented is not limited to a favored few with remarkable gifts for large things or to men of superior genius and intellectual capabilities, but the servant with two belongs to all responsible agents from humblest poorest to those entrusted with means and intellect. Gaining two other talents means doing duty to the best of ability and using the talent aright, a much-needed work hundreds could do, and the value God places even on the least faithfully used is shown by eternal life with commendation as good and faithful and entrance into the Lord's joy. Even the humblest can use gifts for His glory and return entrusted trust with increase as consecrated gift, and humble abilities in house-to-house service may accomplish more than brilliant gifts.

The talents are Christ's gifts and treasures entrusted to the church, first placed in the apostles' hands and passed from generation to generation to His workers, with responsibility descended to the present age. Each generation receives a special trust, future welfare depends on faithful use including opportunities to win souls, and every church member and every child and youth is entrusted. Keeping the soul in God's love requires earnest daily use of talents to utmost ability in work, self-denial and cross-bearing, and trading brings growth in understanding, power, life and health with angels ministering to increase ability and continual drawing from God's fullness with Christ within as a well springing to everlasting life. Even lowest humblest service is accepted when directed to the Master's will and glory, depending not on own merit but Christ's righteousness, while carelessness and indifference is slumber like foolish virgins failing to keep vessels filled with grace and letting light flicker out, forfeiting blessing. Duty is not to study how little can be done but to inquire how much can be done for Him who withheld nothing of Himself.

The Master requires every servant to improve what is committed, and requires still more from those professing to understand the way of life and taking responsibility to guide and teach others in it. All are to work, but those given greater opportunities and clearer understanding of Scripture bear greater responsibility. Christians with different talents including businesspeople and workers outside the ministry share responsibility for advancing the cause through personal effort and means, each using abilities according to capability. Each servant must bear his own burden and work according to ability given even if but one, instead of shifting responsibility upon one thought more richly endowed, doing his own work in the vineyard without looking for another to do what lies in his pathway, bearing personal responsibilities and making personal efforts for those ignorant of Christ with all works wrought in God, for the Holy Spirit will work for such as on Pentecost. The church should give every member a part according to ability so none live idly, and talents as peculiar blessings to reveal heaven's principles are improved by working the vineyard which is the world in purity and holiness, constantly learning better ways to glorify God.

The work is perfected through varied gifts under the Holy Spirit, with differing amounts and kinds of ability, where ministers can serve only according to entrusted responsibilities and the two gaining two more illustrates faithful use of limited trust. No talent is to be underrated and no worker may dominate others or drive souls away, for talents and workers remain God's own to impress and imbue with His Spirit, and those unjustly controlling and ruining souls will have them required at their hands since one soul bought by His only Son outweighs mansions, gold and worldly riches. Different talents may resemble one another while some give special strength to present God's truths effectively, and one consecrated humble individual enlarged in duty by the Spirit with burning zeal communicates light and grace to the whole church. Greater opportunities and clearer understanding bring greater responsibility, requiring persistence in given work and labor for the world rather than confining interest, time, money and means to one locality, while failure to improve advantages wastes them leaving no excuse and slothfulness in leaders provokes wrath. Talents are gifts of intellect for His glory, and God takes those not richly endowed and without large self-confidence and makes the weak strong when they trust Him to do what they cannot, accepting whole-hearted service, making up deficiencies, using material others would pass by, and opening a door in heaven through simple means to reveal God to man.

Servant's Faithful Gain Reward

The servant with two talents traded faithfully, put the money out to usury, and gained two other talents beside them, doubling what was entrusted, and at the return reported the increase to return principal and interest, in contrast to the slothful servant who buried his talent and accused his master.
He followed the plan of addition, adding grace to grace, and received the same commendation and reward as the five-talent servant, being called good and faithful, promised rulership over many things and welcomed into the master's joy with eternal life.
The Lord shows no favoritism and does not measure faithfulness by amount, riches, or opportunities, so faithful effort whether educated or not brings approval, joy, and reward corresponding to faithfulness, perseverance, and earnest effort, and one gained from one in proportion to ability brings just as sure and large a reward.
Gaining two other talents means doing duty to the best of ability and using the talent aright, a much-needed work hundreds could do, for worth is measured by faithful use rather than amount, a few pence well handled being worth more than many pounds unused, and faithfulness in small duties fits for larger responsibilities.

The faithful servant reports doubled talents without claiming merit, feeling he has done only his duty and that deficiently, for gain was possible only because of capital advanced, without which he could have acquired nothing, so gift and gain depend on God and glory belongs to the Master, who nevertheless rewards faithful service dependent on grace.
The talents embrace both money and influence, money or capabilities entrusted by the Master, without which he would have come out bankrupt for eternity, and without the Saviour's love and grace the servants would have been eternally bankrupt.
The servant's trust was measured by talents and opportunities given and he gained an equal amount, so increase is expected to be proportionate to what was bestowed, the reckoning is individual, responsibility is measured by gifts held, greater gifts bring greater responsibility, and God judges according to ability and spirit not merely amount.
All are responsible for seeking returns from what they have been given and for putting the salvation of others first, whether much or little, using means for God's cause rather than selfishly keeping it, with work corresponding to light shining into the heart and to the measure of fullness received.

The verse pictures faithful putting to use and doubling what was delivered and returning it with increase, teaching that faithful use of mental powers and light to share truth is required, with varied amounts reflecting varied abilities as God entrusts different amounts according to capacity.
Entrusted abilities and gifts are lent by God and must be used wisely in His service, improved through use, devoted to His glory, and accounted for, with people accountable for how they exercise every capability, including wealth as a trust to do good and honor God and ability to write as a gift not to be sold or transferred to others to control.
No one lives to himself, for each has talents to represent Christ in every place and under every circumstance, requiring self hid with Christ in God and humble dependence, for without Him nothing can be done, while the Holy Spirit is given to help in every time of need to all who seek Him.
Success is not chance, accident, or destiny but the outworking of providence and reward of faith, discretion, virtue, and persevering labor, coming through practicing the teachings of Jesus and making the principles of Christ's character the principles of human character.

Talents must be wisely improved, not abused, misapplied, or neglected, and faithful service must be self-denying and like Jesus to be praised as good and faithful.
Faithful trading requires careful treatment of the body, surrender of all capabilities to Christ to be sanctified and employed in His service, with no wasting and no embezzling of the Lord's goods, for such misuse is robbery toward God.
Christ entrusts responsibilities according to talents and expects fruitful work while waiting for His return, with fruit as a Spirit-shaped life of unselfish mercy, benevolence, and love, not mere profession or idle waiting.
Merely professing faith or waiting without serving leaves a person wanting, and those who use gifts only for themselves will answer to the Master for that misuse.

The verse means holding a commission from God as Elijah and Jeremiah did, acknowledging Christ as Master and the Way, Truth, and Life, applied now as doing genuine gospel medical missionary work accountable to Him for talents.
The promised commendation will not be given to those who cherish pride and condemn others, who search for faults, bar the way by unjust speeches, scornful criticisms, and discourteous remarks, discourage laborers, and cause souls to be lost.
Faithful stewardship that uses entrusted goods with equal gain looks forward to the Lord's approval and the joy of His kingdom.
Two talents are lent by the Lord and remain His, to be traded upon and improved continually by wise use as a living sacrifice, with improvement only through dependence on God, humility, and trust, making humble workers His representatives with divine power.

The servant is a steward who identifies with his master by accepting stewardship and acting in his stead with the master's interests as his own, where trading must gain advantage for the lord and selfish gain perverts the trust.
Faithful servants abide in Christ and bear righteousness through zealous self-denying life, doing good where work is hardest, conquering difficulties, and keeping unspotted, thereby escaping the doom of the unprofitable servant.
Improving talents means hearing and doing Christ's Word, adopting by faith the principles that characterize His life, being restored to the moral image of God, and working in partnership with Christ, with heart, mind, soul, and strength given to God with His kingdom first.
Only such doers obtain eternal life and meet Christ with joy when He comes again in the clouds of heaven, while slothful professing Christians who make only pretense and do not improve talents will never gain salvation.

God alone judges capabilities and accomplishment, so human estimates err, while self-display is failure and humble work done for God will stand when the faithful over few are made ruler over many.
Bustle and parade that calls attention to self proves a dead failure, but those entrusted with few talents who faithfully improve them, doing humble work as unto God and not to man, receive just as large a reward even if they make less show.
Faithfulness during Christ's absence decides destiny, requiring servants to stay on duty uplifting others, revealing His righteousness, living as heavenly citizens, cultivating grace, putting away selfishness, and entering His joy with approval.
Entrusted gifts are to be appreciated, used aright, traded upon so they increase, and purified and refined so they can serve Him, putting mind, soul, and strength under control of the Holy Spirit, for failure to connect with God in this use robs God.
The verse illustrates the master's approval of faithful gain as commendation for work well done in doing duty, with each person's entrusted amount doubled when all do duty, though results may not be known in this life but will be seen in eternity.

The verse teaches that workers are faithful when putting abilities to work and returning increase, using all capabilities in the best service without shiftlessness.
Each member must have individual living experience, receive God's message, cooperate in assigned work, and faithfully discharge every duty while learning from Christ, who is not a hard taskmaster.
Time, abilities, and capacities are not one's own but entrusted to be used and returned to God, so faithfulness gives no ground for selfishly demanding reward.

Gaining Means Winning Souls

To double the two talents is to put the light graciously given by God to use by exchanging it with others, imparting it to them and benefiting them by personal experience. To gain two other talents beside them is to be the means of gaining a soul from Satan's ranks for the Lord, and that saved soul in turn improves the talent given to him so the work moves onward. Every person brought to the truth is a talent gained who can then use influence and means to help save others, so the talents continue to increase and the servant returns both principal and increase to be rewarded according to works. Trading and doubling does not mean only ability to preach and teach, but money, possessions and temporal means put out to usury for God by putting them into the cause to spread the truth, so that when truth lives in the heart the receiver aids with substance, influence, efforts and means to send truth to others until other souls embrace it and begin also to work for God. Those whose means are constantly so in use save souls, receive crowns, and everyone they are the means of saving adds stars to their crowns and increases eternal reward.

Faithful use directs intellect to serving God, growing in truth, and teaching by example and Scripture, turning souls from error to truth who then labor for others so influence constantly multiplies. A talent is multiplied when it helps bring someone to the truth, and it increases further when that person brings others, including carrying the message of truth to the world. Doubling is the ingathering of souls to Jesus Christ by putting power, influence and means out to the exchangers through the missionary channel to warn the world until a people has decided for the truth and the honest in heart are convicted and converted, so stewards can present the talents doubled at His coming. Doubling does not mean presenting enriched improved farms and building added to building as gain, for those cannot be taken to heaven and will be consumed by the fires of the last days.

To invest and bury talents of means in earthly treasures, with heart, anxiety, labor, tact and skill cultivated for earthly worldly possessions, and to count means invested in larger plans for extending the work as lost with no returns, exalts the earthly above the eternal. Such a course leaves the heart able only to estimate earthly treasure and unable to appreciate heavenly treasure, and leaves the eternal eclipsed by the earthly. Wealth and improved property are not the lasting fruit sought, for earthly possessions will be consumed while souls saved are the gain that can be presented to the Master.

Trading upon talents is doing appointed work within God-given ability, such as opening new fields and preparing the way for the kingdom to be established, arousing interest in educational work, and erecting plain unpretentious church and school buildings. It includes careful work in cultivating land and educating students to influence people to accept truth, sustaining gospel teachers, carrying light to dark places, and carrying truth to new unentered cities and filling responsible positions where help is needed. Such faithful effort is accepted, angels help in it, it makes a good impression on unbelievers, and it lays up treasure beside God's throne. Increase comes by this law of restitution, when places where the work has been established on a good foundation and prospered through self-sacrifice and urgent labor transfer even at considerable self-denial a portion or all of the means once invested in their behalf to servants sent to new fields who must begin at the ABC of the work. Given with cheerfulness according to the principles of God's law, this moves the work forward solidly and with doubled strength to proclaim the third angel's message and the second appearing with power and great glory.

The entrusted work is drawing souls to Christ and saving souls for whom Christ died, with His goods committed to stewards to be carefully traded upon to bring back revenue in souls saved unto eternal life. Those souls in turn become stewards of the truth to cooperate for the kingdom, for there are only two places to deposit treasures, in God's storehouse or in Satan's, and all not devoted to Christ's service is counted on Satan's side. Multiplying means putting wisdom, tact and ability into enlisting souls so those won communicate to others, and labor that through its efforts brings even one soul to Christ and registers a name in the book of life is not failure but pays, for that soul is worth more to God than a world. Houses, lands and money are talents for which account must be given, to be used by enquiring of God and watching for opportunities to do good, advancing His cause and saving souls without asking cost or pay, disposing of means while living, supplying handicapped missions, meeting arising needs, and putting up houses of worship free from debt.

Gaining other talents means presenting truth, raising perishing souls and seeking the lost instead of serving, pleasing and glorifying self, with those bought with a price concentrating energies on building God's kingdom. Only those who so use what was entrusted receive the benediction of good and faithful servant, while those who bury talents by indolence and neglect are pronounced slothful and cannot be commended. Faithful putting of capital to wise use advances the work, while investing means in very uncertain enterprises such as mining stock is burying the talent, a last-day snare to consume and tie up needed means and cripple the work for lack of soul-winning talent. Not burying means using what ability one has to the best of ability, for the servant with fewer talents has a work just as verily as he with five, and trading wisely on one causes God to give ability for more. Even a plain unlearned person fulfills it by laboring quietly among his own people to bring them to truth, gaining other talents by winning souls, eighteen in this case, and receiving blessing, and faithfulness in ordinary work in shop or field is service to God whose reward depends not on greatness but on faithful conscientious performance.

Winning souls in this way requires the spirit of a little child learned in meekness and lowliness, wisdom from God, and ingenious prayerful planning of ways and methods to reach souls of all classes. It especially requires reaching the intelligent, refined, fashionable, wealthy and proud who are too much passed by and hard to access, who know that money, costly buildings and ornaments cannot secure happiness, who are perishing in sins while longing for rest and peace and quietude of mind, and who need Jesus as the Light of righteousness able to make them wise unto salvation. Neglect of this appointed work of drawing souls to Christ, or doing it bunglingly, gives advantage to Satan and causes loss over which angels sorrow, though angels solicit and stand ready to cooperate with human agencies striving to recover souls and cannot take any person's place. What is entrusted is meant to be put to work for proclaiming truth, and diverting resources to worldly plans hinders the work and leaves fields unworked.

Every ability is to be employed in unselfish service and continually increased without stopping, with past effort no reason to cease improving, investing talents in work for souls whom Christ longs to save. Those saved can then work for others so work and fruit continue to grow, while burying talents in the world wastes what was entrusted. This demands earnest work for souls in the cities, selling literature, keeping fellow workers alive and interested, and laboring with all effort and courage to bring souls to stand, because the Lord is soon to come. Intellect itself is a talent to be used to find the best way to employ means for saving souls, including economizing so resources can support new fields, rather than selfishly keeping gains while God's work languishes.

What God entrusts is to be faithfully used and returned with increase for spreading truth and saving people, and money is the Lord's trust to be carefully spent, including on publications carrying the gospel to other countries. Doubling the two talents means investing means so the gospel reaches waiting people, and those receiving truth then support its spread in new fields. Talents are a sacred trust of great truths and a most solemn testing message, and faithful use is not merely to preach but to minister and come close to hearts. They must be used with skill and wisdom to present precious light in the most pleasing manner best adapted to win souls, working with every means in power to compel people to come to the table of pardon and peace, reflecting received light to neighbors and friends from light to greater light.

Doubling talents means laboring to save souls, and God values humble teachable servants who submit to His control and reveal His grace rather than loud authoritative speech, eloquence or riches. Trading means actively sharing what was received, especially truth for winning souls, and those who impart receive more richly in return, grace for grace. Faithful imparting keeps the mind clear and increases progressive usefulness, while crowding the mind with unusable instruction clogs it and hinders usefulness, and imparted light and fresh ideas return as increased wisdom and still brighter thoughts so the more is imparted the more there is to give. This includes going to work in His vineyard to win souls, salting the earth with Christian influence, letting light shine to arouse the dead in trespasses and sins, passing on warnings and invitations, and praying for the Spirit's power so the world may be evangelized. Those who disseminate light receive increased light, while those who stand idle, hide their talent, and hold a dead saltless religion with mere casual faith come to judgment unprepared and unfit as savorless salt.

Multiplying talents means doing the will of Christ with the life always under His converting power, and keeping the lamp never empty but always replenished with the oil of the Holy Spirit through prayer for power. The increase is urgent because the end is at hand and the night comes when no one can work, so Christ commands advance without letting what has been done end the work. Increased resources in one favored place must therefore be divided, subdivided and transferred to great needy unworked fields, with prospered fields helping new fields through gifts and self-denial. Piling up buildings in one center while other portions are scarcely touched is neglect, and managers who feel independent and take money for supposed capabilities work at cross-purposes with God and are marked as unfaithful stewards to be called to account.

It is a privilege to trade diligently on the Lord's goods to increase one's store, and the increase is to be imparted to those fallen into distress, so the trader becomes the Lord's right hand to work out His benevolent purposes. Those reached for salvation in turn become stewards of truth who advance the kingdom. Putting talents to the exchangers means using them to win souls, including seeking to reach persons of influence and capacity to support the work by wise tactful methods without compromising truth or righteousness. Gaining two other talents means imparting the precious light of truth to family and all within influence instead of hiding it in business cares, setting a helping example, cultivating love of truth above gold or silver, arousing world-loving brethren to unity in bearing fruit, teaching by precept and example to learn of Jesus, and cooperating with Him by earnest effort without separation from Him or brethren. Whoever so holds confidence firm unto the end through life or death, prosperity or poverty, has treasure laid up by God's throne to be given when all are rewarded according to works.

The verse requires zeal proportionate to professed present truth, the last message of mercy, shown by thorough conversion, proclamation of the testing message, self-sacrificing effort, much prayer and daily consecration instead of waiting or hindering beginners. Receivers of light who do not accumulate by trading are neither cold nor hot and bring upon themselves the Laodicean denunciation. Using what God entrusts in His work including soul-saving increases blessings and lays up heavenly treasure, for in asking He calls only for His own in return for giving His Son to save from eternal death. Those who willingly and cheerfully give and make all possible of themselves, imparting and receiving to impart, come at last into an eternal weight of glory. Entrusted talents are to be used to seek to save the ignorant, for failure weakens the church and creates apathy that makes backsliders, while faithfulness requires aggressive warfare and true missionary spirit in active soul-work.

Entrusted talents are God's money held as His steward in trust and strictest economy for His honor and glory, doing the uttermost with them so they accumulate through souls brought to knowledge of the truth. Christians trade with the Lord's goods of mercy, grace and temporal and spiritual supply to relieve the hungry, naked, afflicted, suffering and imperiled, keeping the channel open and trading continually under the Spirit's control. God has made ample provision so no case of need lacks one responsible, and He keeps giving riches of grace to those who dispense His bounties. Ingratitude from those helped is no excuse to withhold mercy, as human ingratitude does not stop God, while appropriating His mercy to self does not advance His glory nor receive the benediction belonging to merciful dispensers with warmed, broken, sanctified hearts.

Reckoning Accountability Judgment

Every person is accountable to use gifts for others' good, for God keeps an account of each stewardship and requires the increase that was meant to be made, including growth that could have been made and good that could have been done with capabilities left unused. Merely preserving without putting to work is unfaithfulness to be examined at Christ's coming, and merely having a name on a church book does not secure entrance into heaven, for profession alone has no value and genuine faith is shown through love expressed in works. Refusing to acknowledge this responsibility does not lessen guilt, and those who choose to serve darkness will be unconfessed by Christ at the final accounting, while God rewards servants who work with self-denying, self-sacrificing zeal.

The reckoning comes after a long time when the lord as a man traveling into a far country who delivered his goods to his own servants expects them to trade, five talents to one, two to another, and one to another, to every man according to his several ability, expecting them to make other talents beside them. The faithful bringing doubled increase are called good and faithful, made ruler over many things, and bidden to enter into the joy of the lord, while the servant who dug in the earth and hid his money is called wicked and slothful, told he should have put the money to the exchangers to return with increase. His talent is taken to be given to him which has ten talents, for unto every one that has shall be given abundantly and from him that has not shall be taken away even that which he has, and each moment carries a burden toward the verdict Well done for the faithful or woe for the wicked and slothful. The talents in this reckoning are sacred truths entrusted to true followers to present to the world, together with the duty to perfect Christian character and impart true light to others, not hiding light under a bushel but setting it on a candlestick so fellowship with Christ is seen, causing light to spread as one kindles from another, magnifying God's name, laying up treasure in heaven, and securing eternal life.

The reckoning is when Christ comes to ask what servants did with time, pen, voice, money, influence and means, requiring careful thought and the highest use of the intellect, and the question is not how successful they were in gathering means. Faithfulness is measured by what was done for Christ in the person of the poor, the afflicted, the orphan, the fatherless, the sick, the hungry, and those destitute of clothing and naked, and by what was done with the precious trust of light and knowledge of the truths heralding His second coming to make men wise unto salvation. This includes using abilities, time, words, money, and influence to advance God's cause, help those in need, and share the knowledge that leads to salvation, and each will be judged according to works, for a day of reckoning is near. A person is judged not only for what was done but also for what could and should have been done and left undone, and unused abilities count in the judgment with consequences enduring even for those who are saved.

In the day of judgment condemnation will fall not especially on revolting transgressions but on neglect of what might have been done, holding the spiritually indolent accountable for talents that might have been possessed, for the good Christ died to make possible, and for souls lost through unfaithfulness. He who fails to improve talents is regarded as a slothful, untrustworthy servant unworthy of admittance into the heavenly courts who has disappointed the Master and must bear the penalty of failing to fulfill God's purpose, for mere return of what was received is not enough and God requires increase in knowledge and virtue made possible by Christ clothing divinity with humanity and dying to place qualifications within reach of all. Every person is now trading with the Lord's money and building day by day, hour by hour, for the last great day, and at His coming Christ will reckon with each one, require an account of His goods, and expect results from everyone. There is no second probation and no another chance, for as responsible beings working for time and eternity people are making their records in the books of heaven and preparing reward or punishment proportionate to work done during probation, and if through spiritual indolence they make no effort to win souls they will be held responsible for work they might have done but did not do.

Christ at His coming will scrutinize every talent He has entrusted and demand interest on His capital, giving every man according as his work shall be, for the talents belong to Him because He paid for the service of all who take His name by humiliation and agony, life of toil, and death of shame. Everyone professing to be His servant is therefore not his own but bought with the price of Christ's life, and is under deepest obligation to improve every capability to glorify God by winning men and women from sin to righteousness and returning to God His own in faithful service. No position releases anyone from using mental, moral and physical powers, influence, skill and money, no talent is to be underrated, and no one is to be an idler, but trading means taxing every power to please the Lord, learning use by study and prayer and consecration, practicing economy and self-denial, advancing the kingdom and entering new fields, with weekly self-examination because God demands faithful return when Christ comes quickly to reward every person according to work.

Judgment measures what might have become and been accomplished and what knowledge could have been gained, and failure brings eternal loss even where the soul is not lost. The unfaithful one is charged as a defaulter with the whole amount entrusted but not diligently employed, and is responsible for all that might have been done and was not done, for all the good entrusted capabilities might have done, for all souls lost that might have been saved as a faithful steward of grace and watchman on the walls of Zion, and for all evil arising through conscious or unconscious influence from unfaithfulness. Guilt remains whether remorse is felt or defiance is braved out, excuses of sin and refusal to stand under Christ do not release from God-given work, and by continued indifference, carelessness, disobedience, unthankfulness and unholiness preparation is made for the second death unless wrong is seen and confessed with repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ. Each is held individually accountable to improve what was entrusted and to render improvement back to God, including exalted privileges and heavenly attainments purchased at immense cost, and refusing to do so forfeits favor, while using a gift to turn others away is treated as robbery bringing a fearful account.

God keeps an exact book of record tracing every defect, idle hours and idle time, unseen opportunities, words, unfulfilled duties, days without prayer, and large expenses with little results, and a daily and hourly record is kept with secret thoughts revealed. Those with reasoning ability have no excuse for neglecting to return to God what is His, for talents are a sacred trust purchased at great cost to be put to use and increased through exercise, and at judgment each will answer for how the trust was treated. Condemnation is proportionate to grace and truth given, and faith, obedience and love should grow in keeping with light and privileges received. Talents faithfully used in this life will be carried uncorrupted into the future life for wider use, proving wise stewardship and fitness to receive true riches including everlasting life, deciding between sitting with Christ on His throne and a starless crown.

Faithful gain will be reckoned at the time of reward according to works, with position given according to unselfish fidelity on trial, and those improving talents with pure devotion rewarded in proportion to zeal as recorded. God expects a return proportionate to what each receives, greater endowments bringing greater returns required, and faithful use helps supply the needs of His expanding work. Misapplication, carelessness and failure to keep commandments loses reward, and those who fail to improve talents fail of everlasting life, for faithfulness requires energetic, persistent labor while yielding to indolence weakens and makes further service less likely. Burying a talent instead of using it is unfaithfulness, and the warning applies to all church members failing to use what God entrusted, not ministers alone.

Burying also means wasting opportunities, belittling speech in trifling conversation, and withholding influence and money, which at reckoning brings condemnation. Trading means unselfish, unwearied diligence in using every power for God, recognizing intellect, affections and whole strength belong to Him, while burying corrupts talents by reckless, trifling, cheap conversation that molds associates downward, strengthens the confederacy of evil, and leaves accountability in heaven's sight for influence. To improve larger talents of influence and of money means to invest them actively, including speaking to thousands through printed truth and reporting labor for encouragement of believers, since talents and capital are the Lord's purchased by sufferings and blood, and when the Master comes to reckon He will require His own with usury. Binding a talent in a napkin and burying it in the earth means idleness and sloth that lets souls die and professing to love Jesus while feeling no interest for sinners, seeking merely to save one's own soul, and no idler or slothful one will be found inside the kingdom, throwing away opportunity to obtain a star-gemmed crown.

Talents are a responsibility for which each must give account, affecting character and others, requiring faithful service in God's cause with a heart right with God. Bringing them doubled requires striving daily to preserve sacredness of appointed work and to follow the divine pattern, for they are gifts lent for appointed work. Consecrated service and diligent use would give an excellent record before God and others, and are to be used in the Lord's service, not in rebellion. Privileges and abilities must be improved, and failure, misuse, neglect and refusal of instruction bring condemnation, darkness and punishment measured by light received, requiring faith, obedience, character and service proportionate to light. Mere knowledge of truth without sanctification and without sharing it by opening precious truth to those in error leaves a person foolish and unready, for there is a day of trust and a day of reckoning.

What is entrusted including property, mental powers, spiritual strength, truth, life, abilities, influence and means is lent by God not owned, to be improved and returned with increase for His glory and others' benefit rather than used only for self and family. Treating them as too precious to devote to God means choosing worldly ambition and temporal advantage over His approval and forfeiting eternal honor, while selfish use makes a person an unfaithful steward bringing judgment when patience ends. Each person must use entrusted abilities to spread light of truth, for failure weakens the church, and the church is accountable for entrusted gifts and truths whose increase enlarges obligation, where gain represents faithful improvement it has failed to make. There is a final reckoning for what was lent, so worldly business and pursuit of riches must not take priority over serving God, and faithfulness must be shown now without negligence because perils of the last days are present and the day of God must not overtake as a thief.

Lives and service will be examined by a just God, so abilities should now be offered in consecrated service for the good they can accomplish. People entrusted with gifts are responsible for how they use them, and in the great day each will be asked what profits have been brought from talents lent by Christ who gave His life. All excuses for selfish use will vanish, for each must stand before judgment to answer for deeds done in the body and for good left undone, and the record of returns must stand the test. Stewardship covers every dollar whether one or two or five or ten talents, with single eye to God's glory, learned by perseveringly seeking the Lord, giving self wholly to Him, and doing one's best even in humble positions under unpleasing circumstances, while recklessness with life, health, time and abilities is unfaithful and heaven keeps a record.

One soul purchased by the Son's gift outweighs mansions, gold, silver and worldly riches, so those who unjustly control, ruin and drive souls away will have them required at their hands, for no person dare dictate to and control God's chosen instrumentalities as mere machines. Each soul is individually accountable for what God entrusts, including means and abilities to be used in service rather than spent on self-gratification, with the Lord to reckon for how gifts were used. Those entrusted with the Lord's goods are accountable stewards who must faithfully use what was received, benefit others, and return increase, as the servant with two talents returning two more shows, including sharing earthly possessions and the privilege of understanding the Bible to advance righteousness. The more valuable the abilities, the greater the condemnation if used in Satan's service.

Failing to improve talents by neglect disqualifies for usefulness, makes one responsible for good left undone and souls that might have been saved, with lasting loss from every neglected opportunity. Each must personally use and account for abilities, and the two-talent servant's gain shows salvation requires earnest faith, active work and faithful improvement, not idleness or dependence on another's faith. It presents a final accounting of how servants used what was entrusted, stressing that unfaithfulness will meet consequences when accounts are settled. God's servants are accountable for talents, and misapplying them by following inclination robs God and loses rich spiritual experience.

Talents are entrusted by God to be faithfully used, improved, developed and increased, and every person must render an account with increase for use, neglect or misuse. One who misused talents and opportunities must consider whether learning has come from the past and whether they will be used better if another opportunity is given, rather than wasting them or letting temporal business absorb life.

Growth Through Faithful Use

Talents grow by being put to wholehearted use, for God works with the worker to strengthen ability and enlarge capacity for further service, and knowledge rightly employed develops still greater capability, while faithful handling of small responsibilities proves fitness for larger ones and neglect leaves potential good undone; even one talent rightly used doubles as surely as larger trusts do. Different amounts are entrusted according to ability, yet each is to do his utmost with what is received, for gifts belong to God and are to be used by His Word for the work of truth, and when so used they improve and multiply to His glory, bringing commendation and entrance into the master's joy. The two-talent servant traded diligently and conscientiously on his Lord's goods and doubled what was entrusted, showing that blessings come from God and belong to Him, to be used not by human judgment but by directions in His Word for building up the cause of truth, with self kept out of sight, no selfish thread woven in, no worldly ambition cherished, and Christ held before the world.

However small the talent, God has a place for it, and wisely used it accomplishes its appointed work, for by faithfulness in little duties God works on multiplication so that littles become precious influences. The humble cottager's house-to-house ministry may accomplish more than brilliant gifts, and such faithful service is rewarded with eternal life. Even a humble gift or service can reach and influence those whom greater gifts cannot reach.

Through diligent use with God's blessing two talents can be increased to four, and value is not measured by size. If one works faithfully trusting God and not self, walking humbly without complaining, God cooperates, opens ways, and increases intellect, for acceptance depends not on number but on faithful improvement. Faithful use doubles what was given, one gaining another, two gaining two more, and four on the same principle making eight. Increase comes by daily consecration, dying to self and living unto God, and by doing humble duties faithfully in a trustful, happy mind, so no one should feel unqualified but should go to work and become qualified by using what he has with determination to improve in his own line, and this faithful improvement honors God and keeps the steward from failure. Abilities so developed become a power for good when joined with other cultivated traits of character and wholly consecrated to God, who accepts no superficial service. Gaining other talents means growing and improving until workers become able workmen, regarding this growth as highest duty and proving high calling by earnestness to improve, and unused talents are to be put into active use through educational work carried on in the church and spreading outward to regions beyond. God expects mental abilities to increase through use, and keeping burdens to oneself leaves talents hidden instead of training workers to bear responsibilities so their abilities grow.

The talent grows through exercise, and faithful use can lead to greater responsibilities and influence, for faithful exercise develops strength, tact, knowledge, experience and spiritual efficiency, while neglect weakens them and leaves intellect debased, and sharing what is learned strengthens understanding. Gifts of human ability are to be directed wisely for His glory, and the Spirit's guidance does not remove the need to exercise them but teaches their right use. Abilities and opportunities belong to God for faithful use, wisely improved talents produce increase, and each has work to do for God's glory and others' good. Dependence on Christ, like a branch drawing nourishment from the vine, enables blessing others, and physical, mental and moral powers multiply as employed for His glory, with good done to others part of that increase. Each must render an individual account, and daily choices build the record for that accounting.

God gives ability to be exercised and strength comes only by using it, so burying the talent leaves professed believers with little strength, while using talents makes them increase in capacity and power, and God thereby tests and proves His people. Faithfulness requires yielding self and not only giving means, taking burdens and responsibilities and arising to help with obedient unselfish love, with younger and less worn minds working in the vineyard instead of letting burdens rest heavily on older bearers. Each is accountable to use and improve what God gives, faithful use increasing ability to serve, and each worker is to exercise personal judgment and develop gifts rather than depend on one leader to direct every part. Faithful use brings growth in knowledge while revealing need to remove harmful habits and avoid wrong example, and mistakes do not exclude from service. Room is to be given for abilities, judgment and initiative, and God-given talents and opportunities must be wisely improved through effort as part of forming character approved by God. Abilities grow through practical service, seeking God's counsel, acting on learning, and accepting small responsibility.

Entrusted talents increase when put to constant use and grow through exercise, and proper use can develop even one talent into a talent of the highest order, for talents are gifts from God, not products of personal energy, to be put to work for Him. Unused ability has no value and decreases strength, while steady effort builds strength for greater responsibilities and merits greater light. The church should train members for missionary work so they can use abilities to spread truth, using talents to develop people fit for trust and influence who uphold pure principles and accomplish good. Gifts are to be increased through exercise and diligent service, and every faculty is to be improved and used in His service through thorough effort and experience, so entrusted capital is doubled and can help others. Exercising abilities makes them more effective.

Improving talents requires decided earnest effort rather than desultory efforts, constant improvement, diligence toward physical and mental perfection, rising to emergencies, mastering difficulties, and becoming a person of opportunity who lives to please God, with continued cultivation to bring out best energies. Practical obedience in given work leads to increased talents, and right use even in small daily duties promotes growth as part of cheerful obedience. Faithfulness includes careful work in small ordinary duties and unselfish effort beyond express command, especially when success depends on it, while neglect and mere eye-service are unfaithfulness. Talents must be carefully cultivated and wisely used so as not to disappoint the Saviour, for divided thoughts and interests absorbed by too many things unfit for sacred work unless the heart is humbled through fasting and prayer, since even at best all human powers are none too much to give. God requires all there is through constant improvement of every talent, no low standard accepted and no worldly or selfish motive entering the settlement between God and the soul, and by faith the Holy Spirit instructs so the receiver both receives and imparts heavenly grace, succeeding in character formation and reaching the highest standard as every soul's privilege.

Faithful improvement stands in contrast to slothfulness and succeeds only by dependence on Christ as He was dependent on the Father, by abiding in Christ and receiving to give, while relaxing into do-little makes one the slothful servant defrauding the soul. Talents are to be improved by exercising them in service with complete cooperation, for divided service is unacceptable and the heart must be converted. Trading means improving every opportunity to add to acquirements by holy principles in the Word, giving multiplied ability, done by those constrained by Christ's love who are faithful, not sluggards, not noncommittal, not divided, but of one mind and judgment, quick to detect and name errors, so no cheap bungling work enters the cause. The faithful trader feels dependent on the Maker and is not ashamed to acknowledge it, takes no credit but gives all honor to God before brethren and worldly men, weeds out everything grieving His Spirit, and like Daniel improves every opportunity, keeping cheap work out and gaining multiplied ability. Nothing can be done of self, in and through Christ all things can be done, faithfulness doing its best, refusing sloth, seeking daily increased knowledge, with all work wrought in God. Diligence must rise to emergencies, master difficulties, and become tactful and able like Daniel and Joseph, who were shrewd managers because they lived to please God and not inclination, with God witness to all transactions.

As talents are diligently improved under the Saviour's control, the person becomes more Christlike in words and actions, for to improve them is to become Christlike by studying His character and cooperating in blessing, uplifting, strengthening and ennobling others by example of His spirit, ways and works, opposite to hiding which lets self control. Followers bought with His life should grow in knowledge of His will and continually improve in intellect and morals, developing character approaching angelic perfection. Even those with few must put them to work rather than remain idle, for faithful use and integrity bring increase and blessing, and use forms character which determines fitness for eternal life. Faithful discharge of duty in humble ways to bring souls to truth brings increased ability, tact, knowledge and experience, while the slothful will be dealt with according to work he might have done. The opposite is neglect and failure to improve, discouraging and driving away souls purchased by His blood by uncourteous, un-Christlike, unmerciful dealing, weakening confidence in Christianity. Labor bringing even one soul to Christ is not failure, for work seeming fruitless may have results eternity will reveal.

Abilities left undeveloped serve no purpose, so God-given talents should be valued, developed, put to work in Christ's service, and used by character and example to lead others to serve. Entrusted abilities are to be exercised, improved and consecrated to benefit others, not wasted or used for evil, but cultivated, developed and returned enlarged for useful service by God's favor and power. What is possessed is entrusted by God to be cultivated and used faithfully, capacities developed and returned enlarged for useful service and blessing to humanity. Faithful service turns from what harms character and follows Christ's example with personal effort in His strength. Uniting entrusted powers with selfish deceptive influences instead of giving soul, body and spirit wholly to the Redeemer withholds from Him what belongs to Him.

God entrusts natural and spiritual gifts to be faithfully used and continually developed, and by laying hold of Christ's righteousness and following His example people grow toward His likeness and fitness for heaven. Such service through faith and trust makes people colaborers with Christ and vessels for honorable use. Lent talents are sacred treasures to be improved by wise use in the post where God placed the person, steadfast and refusing calls away from duty, so grace and knowledge from improvement are imparted and God's grace manifest, inquiring at every step whether the path is the Lord's way. Misuse for selfish ends, placing brethren in hard places, or leading souls onto Satan's ground lets Satan triumph through the agent to bring discouragement and stumbling, for man with all resources belongs to God as Proprietor, talents kept pure and holy to magnify the Creator, working in humility hidden in Christ by the Spirit. Entrusted abilities used in God's service have effectiveness greatly increased through the Holy Spirit.

Abilities in every church can be discerned, educated and developed for the Master's use through practical missionary training, requiring careful work and organized plans to send workers into every church large and small to instruct members to labor for the church and unbelievers. Their education is needed in the church and regions beyond, for talents develop through use. Sabbath-school teachers should develop talents through use and improve on attainments, young people should be taught to develop character and use gifts faithfully wholly consecrated to Him, and a physician's opportunities to point the sick to the Saviour must not be hidden or wasted. Young people devoting minds and talents to God can become successful workers warning sinners and leading souls to Christ, to share the Lord's joy when work is finished.

Unused abilities are of little value and must be worked faithfully and persistently, including carrying truth to country and city, since consecrated perseverance matters more than genius or learning. Young people must develop knowledge, experience and abilities for service and bear high responsibilities on religious principle, with no limit to true education, since gaining means putting every attainment to use for God and humanity. Failing to make the most of gifts fails to work for others' good, yet abilities may be cultivated with all strength to become capable of high responsibilities while guided by principle. Knowledge and culture have value only as stepping-stones to highest purposes, unless so used they avail nothing. Those of learning must study the Bible themselves rather than rely on others, and workers should grow in knowledge to become efficient and thorough without loss, developing what God gave and imparting its wisdom as channels refreshing souls and revealing His character.

Converted people must grow in capability by use, and failure to grow brings being pruned away and cast aside. Entrusted mental and intellectual capabilities and opportunities are to be appreciated, girded for work, and enlarged by vigorous exertion and thorough discipline under the Holy Spirit rather than wasted through apathy and indifference. Apathy, indolence and inattention let the mind degenerate, pleasing Satan, while practicing knowledge gained impresses others by character with the value of training for Christ's service, for much is to be done and novices should not be set to highest matters. Every talent must bear perfect fruit to His glory with heart, body and mind sanctified and separate from the world, for buried talents and imperfect fruit fail God's standard, and mere outward form without spirit and power is failure. Abilities and opportunities must be used and increased, each giving account including for influence for good or evil.

Every talent is to be invested to best advantage in God's kingdom, and faithful service develops wisdom for the work and brings peace, grace and power of intellect. Using entrusted talents gives knowledge that dissatisfies with self and shows the great work to be done, prepares one for higher trust, opens the heart to Christ as teacher, and raises to higher service, since what is received must be imparted to continue receiving. Working where one is and passing along truth prepares the faithful to fill vacancies and be called higher, moving forward trusting God with fresh experience and unswerving love even when reluctant, welcoming Christ lest responsibility lift to vanity, opening beauties of the Word not yet comprehended, keeping the past as treasure constantly added to. God-given talents are to be cultivated, improved and directed intelligently to useful service and glory, used productively rather than neglected or degraded.

Educational opportunities and abilities must be cultivated to the best ability, shared with others, and returned with increase, with students valuing study for this life and eternity. True higher education gives power to be consecrated to God, using knowledge to search Scripture, for ignorance is crime when light can be obtained, and sanctified knowledge gives joy and light to those in error, every student's education turned to best account in intelligent work. Even little talent such as education and influence must be employed for Christ, for all belongs to God by purchase, and doing all possible joins divine power to human effort to give victory and increased ability. Health, strength, intellect and time belong to Him by infinite price, and use widens influence, making one a victor day by day. Faithful use brings precious light and impressions of the Holy Spirit, requiring a mind stored with heavenly treasure and free from frivolous thoughts, for frivolous minds cannot receive increased light, and Christ's sacrifice must never be treated as if not made.

All abilities must be consecrated by teachers and students and put to practical use in blessing others, by which they continually increase in power, wisdom and knowledge. Learning Bible principles for living and laboring makes precious everything worthy of attention, and the Lord blesses all who seek to bless others. Cultivation of every power is of highest consequence, every talent securing other talents of high spiritual quality, requiring the highest standard especially in restoring sinful souls, for thinking a low standard enough misses the mark. Abilities such as knowledge put to work are to be increased through practical consecrated service to God. Every God-given talent is needed in pressing through moral darkness toward greater light. Faithful service means using and increasing what is entrusted where one is, beginning with family and extending to neighborhood and church, with the Holy Spirit cooperating with humble willing workers to grow tact and wisdom. Entrusted talents including every physical, mental and spiritual faculty are to be used and developed not neglected, forming an efficient character representing Christ and preparing to work with God in saving souls, gifts entrusted that people may gain eternal life.

Practical Stewardship Duties

Stewardship is individual and cannot be sold, transferred, or merged into another person, council, conference, or publishing house, nor placed under human control; each must employ what is entrusted, exercise own judgment, retain responsibility, and trade where he can, with none accountable for talents never had.
Those with one or two should not envy the five-talent man's work but use their own with humility; fear of criticism must not become indolence, no man is to weigh another's talents, none is to be controlled to express another's mind, value coming not from number but appreciation and employment, with smallest gifts not ignored.
God gives work according to ability, and one entrusted with larger trust has no authority to silence or control less able workers who do not follow exact methods, but is to do his own part while letting humbler workers do theirs, since one with fewer talents may reach a class others cannot.

Gifts and means, including temporal means and property while keeping personal spending needful, are to be invested in the cause in this lifetime, especially to save souls, relieve widow, fatherless, suffering and destitute, spread truth and sustain the cause, becoming one's own executor while in strength and not leaving work for children.
Talents of means are the Lord's money not gotten by own might, not to be willed to unbelieving reckless children to squander, hoard or worship, by which Satan keeps means from the cause; to leave means to those who will not use it for God is to hide the talent and rob the treasury, and helping the aged so to dispose is as sacred as preaching.
The parable warns not to hide what God lent or postpone giving until death, but to use means while alive by the owner himself, answering claims for liberality must not be deferred nor shifted to others, for waiting surrenders property to death rather than to God; doing good requires seizing present moments.

Returning what was delivered with increase means bringing the tenth with gifts and offerings into the treasury to advance the cause and send preachers to those in darkness, rather than withholding like the unfaithful servant; withholding the tenth is recorded as robbery, and merely changing course afterward does not correct without repentance.
Faithful use of means includes building meetinghouses, establishing sanitariums and starting schools, erecting suitable buildings in Washington, freeing the Washington house of worship from debt, supplying workers near and far especially foreign missions, while withholding tithes blocks truth.
Money belongs to God and must be traded for gain by consecrating it in return for Christ's ransom, putting it to work in missionary fields rather than keeping idle in banks or hoarding, including supporting sanitariums, securing places to congregate and advertising meetings so unentered cities hear truth, well spent if even one soul is saved.

Investing entrusted money in very uncertain enterprises such as mining stock is burying the talent, a snare of the last days to consume needed means, causing loss and crippling God's work; talents must not be tied up in land, costly enterprises producing little, or worldly business while other parts lack.
Every converted soul is appointed to witness, trading every talent of light and influence, letting light shine in good works not merely talk; spending mind on novel reading wastes powers and brings under Satan's control, while searching Scriptures and doing the word grows efficiency to save souls.
Servants learn to trade beginning at once upon first endowment rather than waiting for larger gifts; trading means calling attention to truth, presenting it by precept and example, seeking wisdom, searching Scriptures and realizing co-partnership, by which He educates workers and transforms them.

Ministers must not let people depend on them but lay soul-saving on the church, apportion work to the idle rather than hinder them, correcting blunders and setting them to work again; detaining students for prolonged education wastes time and loses souls, while those improving where they are will be blessed.
A person entrusted with two talents can return them doubled by faithful use, and W. C. had enough ability to manage what was in his care and faithful use would have made him faithful without taking his father's property, but abilities turned toward selfish gain caused harm.
Trading includes putting forth effort to reach souls and making known health reform in gatherings such as camp-meetings where physicians take part, giving means to sustain hard fields, neglected cities and new fields including Nashville, with established parts helping unworked parts as restitution that doubles talents.

Faithfulness requires using financial means in loans and gifts to place sanitariums without embarrassment, entrusting means for the Madison need, investing to complete Avondale and educate missionaries, applying means now to help Madison workers, and investing some of the Lord's money in England.
The Lord is soon to come and every talent of goods and property is to be returned with increase at once to relieve embarrassed institutions, all acting without delay, looking over affairs to cooperate because eternal consequences hang on employing property, money so given placed in Christ's hands in His brethren.
Accountability governs amusement, allowing only what can be engaged asking God's blessing and forbidding what disqualifies for prayer; health is to be preserved by learning health laws and self-control, strength like money being capital more valuable than money to be used wisely, not wasted on tobacco or harmful appetite.

Time and mental, moral and physical capabilities belonging to God are entrusted to every youth to be cultivated and employed for His glory, mothers responsible to cultivate minds and train children, neglecting for pleasure making them unprofitable; children and capabilities entrusted to parents must be trained so none are lost.
The servant must answer for both original gift and gain, which makes saving souls the life-work before probation closes; talents of influence and means belong to God for His solemn work, God having first claim before children, and letting means go to the enemy requires account.
God is a rich giver not a harsh exacting creditor, bestowing gifts where men can trade; gaining means being a provider not only consumer, using provisions to relieve suffering beings bought with blood of His only Son that believers have everlasting life, laying up good foundation, while the world as vineyard is to return fruit.

People are not their own but belong to God by creation and redemption through Christ's humiliation, toil, agony and death which paid for service, and must dedicate every power including influence and knowledge to Him; neglecting duty or withholding talents brings consequences as robbery.
The ability to write a book is a talent for which the writer is accountable and must not be sold or placed wholly under publishing houses or conference control; dealing unfairly with a worker, controlling productions, oppressing, or taking an author's avails on plea of wages is as unfair as taking income of houses and lands.
Talents of mind must stay under God's authority not under men's control, no leader's judgment replacing individual responsibility, no one run as machine by another's brain; room must be given to develop, think, act and bear responsibility, with individual judgment improved rather than depending on leading minds.

Faithful stewardship uses what was entrusted diligently and gains more, in opposition to idleness; honest secular business with strict honesty earns approval but alone does not complete what is required, for bringing sheaves by helping souls remains, and full results are known only when rewards are given.
The verse teaches quiet faithful service improving abilities to bless others by self-denial and consistent life rather than seeking recognition; faithfulness in ordinary duties and little acts without seeking praise is commended and rewarded, and doing nearest work with utmost effort even amid danger looks to the end.
Faithful increase means good works and unselfish acts testifying with more power than words, leading beholders to desire righteousness and honoring God; Christ is pleased when wisely used abilities bear fruit, acknowledging service through His strength with eternal reward.

To gain means to use limited trust wisely with faithfulness in little, thoroughness, deep thought and mastery climbing round after round to qualify for heavier burdens, while self-inflated superficial skimming without climbing does not gain approval.
God entrusts talents to each to be cultivated, where neglect brings failure and loss, being weighed wanting or with the white-robed throng depending on action; faithful cultivation decides destiny in sanctuary balances, fitting for mansions through lifelong character building.
God gives every follower at least one talent to improve, responsibility measured by powers originally bestowed including strength lost through neglect, God working with exerted ability to increase faculties; even one talent put to exchangers by wise investment should increase to two.

God entrusts talents to every person from lowliest to highest proportioned to capabilities with no idlers, including light of truth; every servant united by living faith handles capital to increase usefulness, returning increase, while hoarding loses the soul, houses and lands being worthless when probation closes.
The two talents delivered are everything lent for service, including brain, bone, muscle, probationary time, money, houses and lands to be used as almoners; refusing His side, acting as owner, wasting strength, squandering opportunities and worshiping property is robbery and idolatry giving to worldly things homage belonging to Creator.
What God gives is to be put to work by trading upon abilities and sharing in useful service rather than accumulating; as people impart they receive more richly, instruction gained for practical service not beyond usable, and giving brings receiving with God giving increase.

Entrusted abilities are to be put to use, while worth rests not on special talent but devotion; talents great or small are to be used in humble service by learning from Christ and passing knowledge on, without excuses or worldly entanglement.
Influence and money are talents bearing great responsibility to employ for God who redeemed them, response to the Spirit leaving opportunity to return; the talent of influence is sacred to bring people to Christ, and talents of influence when sanctified bless holders and church.
Using talents to accumulate wealth for selfish purposes, cleverness, supremacy or departure from His will fails purpose and leaves weighed wanting; money, houses, lands, speech and influence must be traded, put in circulation and invested through tithes and offerings, not buried or spent for show.

Life itself is a costly trust purchased by sacrifice, accountable for developing gifts through service and uplifting humanity, worker remaining learner and teacher; all one knowing truth has is held to test character and must be used in ministering to make giver like God.
Faithful trading requires walking humbly under Christ's yoke, acknowledging God as Master, praying, studying Scripture, consecration, economy, self-denial, weekly self-examination and seeking the Spirit, rather than exalting self or following unconsecrated counsel.
Those surrendered consecrate powers and privileges, the Spirit guiding mind for glory, otherwise ability can be used against Him; surrender unites weakness to might and gives access to hearts, and talents are to be asked of Christ so He can teach best use leading to increase.

God gives increased talents to those wisely improving and recognizes service through Christ's grace, faithful service developing character whose harvest is enjoyed to come, work begun continuing to completion, eternal life itself a gift whose blessings are shared.

Mental faculties must not be perverted by mingling error with truth as seen in Solomon, while faithful use guards simplicity and is rewarded; intellect is a talent whose value depends on use, to be cultivated under God's Spirit, using it for vice being abuse.

God intrusts means to prove whether people acknowledge Him and advance glory not self nor oppress poor, earth with treasures His; He claims improvement as fruits of love, to obey better than sacrifice, without pure love costliest offering too poor.

Faithful work done to bless self and others and magnify His name does not mean working alone, for God presides and the Spirit enables speaking at right time; God's people putting talents to work receive opportunities with increased grace, hope and faith.

Every talent in the church is to be used for good keeping each line in proportion; resources used especially in saving souls increase blessings and lay up heavenly treasure, and means used while opportunity remains to prepare missionaries will be rewarded.

A precious opportunity unused is wasted talent to be watched for; careless use weakens effectiveness leaving inability when important opportunity arises, and inaction eventually destroys confidence in God.
