Parable of the Talents in a CourtyardBible World

Matthew 25:23

His lord said unto him, Well done, good and faithful servant; thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord.

The verse is the Master's commendation in the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-23, spoken to the disciples as part of the discourse in Matthew 24 and 25 about watching for His second appearing. What is entrusted is the Lord's own property lent in sacred trust, comprising every natural and spiritual gift, ability, opportunity and resource to be used for His glory and increased for Him. Gifts are distributed according to each servant's known ability to use them, and reward rests on faithfulness rather than on size, amount or outward success as measured by men. Being faithful over a few things means diligently trading with what is given to gain positive increase instead of burying it unused, and such use doubles capability and effectiveness through cooperation with God. At His return Christ reckons with each steward by name, and faithful use even of what is small is met with greater responsibility and rulership over many things and with entrance into the joy of seeing souls redeemed.

Parable Setting and Story

The saying belongs to the parable of the talents in Matthew 25:14-23, the last of the many parables in Christ's public teachings to the disciples. It was given as part of the discourse in Matthew 24 and 25 shortly before entering Gethsemane, spoken early in the morning after crossing the mount. It gives warning in regard to His second appearing in the clouds of heaven. Its setting shows servants entrusted with talents, teaching that God gives people natural and spiritual abilities to be used for His glory and the good of the world, to grow in fitness for heaven by laying hold of Christ's righteousness and following His example, and that those gifts can be abused or misapplied. Service in the parable involves work, responsibility, and improving one's abilities for the lord's purpose.

In the parable a lord traveling into a far country delivers his own goods to his servants according to ability, the kingdom of heaven is represented, and after a long time he returns to reckon and settle accounts with them. The servant entrusted with five talents traded with them and gained five more, and on hearing his report the lord calls him good and faithful, declares him faithful over few things, promises to make him ruler over many things, and bids him enter into the joy of his lord. Faithfulness in managing even a small trust is honored with greater responsibility and the joy of the Lord, and the reward is proportionate to improvement. The talents belong to the master and are lent as capital that is not our own for investment in His work, so each servant must account personally for whether they were improved or abused, and the time to use them faithfully is now, before opportunity ends and the account is fixed. Faithfulness means active trading to gain increase, in contrast to digging in the earth and hiding the lord's money, letting capital lie dormant, hoarding it, or spending it as one pleases, and the servant who hides his talent through fear and distrust is condemned as wicked and slothful, with the unused trust taken away and given to one who will use it well.

Watching for Christ's return means diligent service rather than idle waiting. The parable of the talents follows the parable of the ten virgins, teaching vigilant watching and sanctified waiting, with no relaxation of effort to secure eternal life. Its lesson applies to the urgent work before Christ's return, that every talent is to be improved in service now, waking from stupor and deathlike slumber to realize the great work to be done and the great issues to be met. In the 1844 movement, the prophetic and ceremonial arguments were understood to point to the bridegroom's coming, and the midnight cry aroused people to prepare to meet the Lord, while the waiting and slumber of the believers are followed by that coming.

The commendation of well done to the good and faithful servant is connected with Christ's words of praise to the church of Ephesus, though that praise is followed by a warning that the church has left its first love.

Talents Entrusted by God

The talents entrusted are a sacred loan of grace and endowments for eternal interests, comprising all natural and spiritual gifts and abilities whether original or acquired, not earthly goods or worldly abilities only, nor ability to preach only, to be used for God's glory and not buried in worldly enterprises or used merely to accumulate worldly goods. Faithfulness in that trust even in humble service is rewarded with greater responsibility and entrance into the Lord's joy, and eternity is to be kept in view. Each person must employ his own gifts in Christ's service rather than delegate that duty to another, and entire obedience was secured by Christ at the cost of His own blood and sufferings, so that even humblest service becomes a consecrated gift when done in doing the Master's bidding and promoting His glory.

The talents include mind, speech, thought, influence, time, health, strength, intellect, affections, sympathies, conscience, position, possessions, opportunities, probationary time, education, and religious experience, including eyes to discern opportunities, ears, knees for prayer, and feet to run in God's commandments, as well as pen, press, voice, purse, sanctified affections, words, money, light of truth received, medical knowledge and practical skill. They all belong to God and are to be used in Christ's work for salvation of souls, guarding mind and body for service, bringing habits into conformity with His will, looking to God for counsel to meet human needs, with responsibility applying to everyone from least to greatest. Faithful unselfish diligence in using even a single talent can bear fruit to bless and elevate others, while careless words, trifling conduct, self-indulgence and misuse waste, corrupt and weaken them.

Money, means, property, houses, lands, tithes, offerings, prosperity, brain power and mechanical power are talents placed in trust to be traded upon and increased for God, not hoarded, buried, selfishly retained, spent on self, or claimed as one's own with right to do what one pleases. Trading and doubling means using the Lord's money in practical benevolence so souls are saved, helping spread truth and bring others to serve God, which gives spiritual life and turns selfish covetous worshipers of mammon into earnest faithful co-workers with Christ. Faithfulness is recorded in judgment and faithful use even of a small trust leads to greater responsibility, crowns, eternal reward and sharing the Master's joy, requiring return of both principal and interest, while the unfaithful lose what was entrusted.

Light, present truth, knowledge of vital thrilling truth heralding the second coming, the Word, fresh bright ideas opened by the Holy Spirit, justification by faith and the righteousness of Christ, and the inherited trust of light from patriarchs, prophets and apostles are talents to be reflected, imparted, sown and multiplied, not hoarded, quarrelled over, or kept to self where of no benefit. Being faithful over a few things means using that light as God's entrusted agents, letting it shine upon others for own growth and to enlighten unbelievers and make men wise unto salvation, including what is done with time, pen, voice, money, influence and intellect for the poor, afflicted, orphan, fatherless, sick, hungry and destitute of clothing. Faithful imparting brings increase with greater wisdom, richer mind, brighter thoughts, strength to overcome objections and more to give, and awakens praise and rejoicing in heaven, while God's truth entrusted not for quarrelling makes people light-bearers who persuade others, sowing seeds bearing fruit for righteousness and preparing for heaven and the Lord's joy.

What is entrusted remains the Lord's property, loan, capital and trust by creation and by redemption through Christ's humiliation, agony, blood, suffering and death on Calvary, lent to dependent people to trade with, improve, double and return with increase, leaving weighty responsibility and no freedom to use for own pleasure. Christ bought right to service and paid ransom for every son and daughter of Adam, securing willing service as fellow workers with God, and at reckoning He requires His own with usury, scrutinizing every talent and expecting interest in proportion to capital entrusted. The talents are all capabilities, opportunities, time, influence to lift Christ up and draw men, intellect, sympathy and affection sacredly guarded, and divine treasures of truth to be presented to all men for good of humanity and glory of God with kingdom first, increasing as used, while burying in earth, world and worldly business brings no return, robs and reproaches Maker and Redeemer, imperils spiritual interests, loses eternity of bliss and faces retribution.

Talents are not given only to a chosen few with superior endowments, exalted education or intellect, but every person, high and low, rich and poor, learned and unlearned, man, woman, child and youth, from lowliest obscure to highest trust, is entrusted with some peculiar gift and given his own work according to ability, whether one talent or two or five, and none is accountable for talents never had nor excused as idler. Everyone whether serving God or pleasing self possesses this trust under obligation, and refusing to employ it or acknowledge God's claims does not lessen guilt. One talent well used gains other talents and is judged as faithful as five, reaching a class those with two or five cannot approach, so those with larger trusts must not silence, condemn, discourage or restrict humbler workers, but let all work in own sphere with own armor, hands strengthened, doing best possible service where they can without merging individuality into another man, council, conference or publishing house.

Particular trusts include ability to write a book and its income, the physician's timely word, the farm and school at Huntsville, household goods, the religion of Christ carried to the sick room, the gift for speaking truth to hundreds, and the talent of singing and influence, with every person having his own work appointed and diversities of moral and spiritual capital entrusted to use for the Master. Talents belong to God, are given to everyone to benefit others, and each person must make the most of them and grow in usefulness, with faithfulness over few commended, given greater responsibility and welcomed into the Lord's joy. Entrusted light and gifts must shape character into growth in knowledge, holiness and fitness for eternal life, calling for self-examination, surrender, yoking with Christ, daily conversion, lifelong character building, gathering inherited light from patriarchs, prophets and apostles, seeking truth as treasure, shining as lighthouse to make Christ known and warn souls with greater obligation today, and laying hold of Christ's righteousness. Using them for worldly interest, self-pleasing and self-exaltation is unfaithful, requiring digging up hidden abilities to benefit others, making truth known, spending strength to save perishing souls, learning meekness, bearing burdens and promoting godliness, while grudging giving mocks omniscient God who needs no people, and unfaithfulness loses privileges with condemnation at last day for refusing leading of truth reaching understanding.

Gifts, property, mental powers, spiritual strength, resources, abilities, money, possessions, intellect, knowledge and affection are lent not for selfish advantage, ambition, extravagance or ownership, but to bless others and honor God by advancing Christ's cause and benefiting humanity in His generous spirit through copying His unselfish self-sacrificing life and supporting the weak and suffering. Talents include money together with mind, intellect and experience, designed so all classes combine different talents in unity in diversity to enlarge the work and bless workers bound together, and sanctified wisdom united with unselfish investment makes the talent efficient in cooperation devised by God. Using money for self turns blessing to curse, and self-serving schemes under pretense of service reveal an aristocracy the heavenly universe will not tolerate. Even a little faith is a talent to be exercised by helping others and refusing to speak words of doubt, and the Lord increases exercised faith.

Abilities, opportunities, time, talents and property are the Lord's goods and sacred trusts lent to be cultivated, exercised wholeheartedly for Him and His glory rather than for self or self-glory, and servants are accountable to God and Christ as Master above every earthly master for how they use them. Each gift is investigated under solemn scrutiny to see if it was improved, enlarged by doing good and returned sanctified by truth, for possessing ability is not enough without diligent exercise in faithful service. What the Lord entrusts in the parable is meant to be used for good and to accomplish good, and misusing it fails its purpose, while wealth that lets sons spend fruits of others' labor without learning its value leads them to misuse what the Lord intended for that purpose. Every talent belongs to God and must be used to His glory to very best account and not rust through inaction, including appreciating spiritual blessings, gathering every precious ray of light, being careful and economical in temporal things, and using physical energies and personal influence, since blessings are not given to those who do not value them and neglect makes indifferent.

Money is a talent lent by God, not a saviour, to be traded wisely on His goods to honor Him rather than used for self-gratification to dishonor His name and misrepresent His character. Faithfulness over this talent begins with fear of the Lord as fear to dishonor Him rather than slavish fear, trusting God instead of taking self into self-keeping, to whom God gives wisdom, sanctification and righteousness, making the trusting person His instrument to promote sacredness of His pure holy character to highest ends of His work, reaching perfection of character revealed in Christ's humanity as gospel enriches and beautifies disciples with His attributes and grace. People entrusted with abilities, resources and the Word they have received and sought to understand are stewards who should use them faithfully for God's glory, sharing gifts to advance righteousness and truth and build up His work and kingdom.

Talents, gifts, abilities, resources, opportunities, time and all powers belong to the Lord and are entrusted to people accountable to Him for faithfully using, developing, improving, investing and returning them with increase rather than neglecting, burying, leaving idle or claiming them selfishly. Wise faithful use benefits those within influence and increases moral power to be a light to others, which requires educating and training all powers, seeking His guidance on how to use them well, and Christlike humility and self-denying love without which pride and self-sufficiency take their place and the work is bungled. Faithfulness means using gifts for God's glory not self-glorification or personal distinction, to bring others to Jesus and share light of truth, while turning gifts to oppression and harm betrays trust and faces consequences.

Distribution According to Ability

Gifts are not handed out at random but are measured to each servant's known capacity to handle them, five to the one who can employ five, two to the one who can improve two, and one to the one who can wisely manage only one, from lowest to highest. The Master knows what each can carry and assigns work accordingly, lending talents as capital that remains His own to be invested and answered for, whether used or abused. No one is left to remain idle with even a few gifts, but each is to trade on what is held with integrity, consulting the expressed will to know what is required, and faithful use enables gain of more.

Return is demanded in proportion to what was lent, with increase and interest expected in proportion to capital, for God accepts a person according to what is possessed and not according to what is not possessed. Ten talents increase is never demanded from one talent, yet one talent put to the best account is accepted, while capital left dormant, buried, hoarded, or spent at pleasure brings punishment according to abuse when account is required with interest. Each sphere has its own expected yield, and reward follows improvement of the trust rather than its size.

Reward turns on faithfulness rather than amount, position, or results as reckoned by men, so one talent faithfully improved is rewarded as surely as five. Soul, body, and spirit are lent to be sacredly employed and wisely increased, and whether the trust was large or small those who put it to use and gain more receive equal approval, greater responsibility, and a share in the Master's joy. Judgment looks to love, earnestness, piety, and motive rather than eloquence, intellect, or large donations, and the one with fewer gifts who does his best receives hearty approval just as the one who accomplishes more. No one is accountable for talents never had, none should complain of small gifts or despise them by human estimate, and each must trade personally on what is held instead of merging individuality and stewardship into another person or council.

Responsibility is measured not by present resources and capacities but by powers originally bestowed and possibilities for improvement, including work negligently done or left undone, powers left unused, knowledge that could have been gained, and neglected opportunities. Unused capabilities are brought into account as much as those improved, and men are held responsible for all they might have become through right use and for all that might have been had but was missed through devotion to the world. Inability to work for others does not excuse, since that inability was produced by inactivity and deliberate choice and perpetuated by neglect, and even where the soul is not lost there will be realized in eternity the result of unused talents and eternal loss for ability not gained. Neglect of plainly specified duties such as watching and praying, making God counselor and dependence, and warning others in danger disqualifies from the field that might have been occupied, grieves and dishonors God, and charges the defaulter for the whole amount entrusted but not diligently employed, for evil arising through conscious or unconscious influence, and for souls lost that might have been saved, preparing for the second death unless there is confession with repentance toward God and faith toward the Lord Jesus Christ.

Greater light, grace, truth, opportunities, privileges, and clearer understanding of Scripture bring heavier obligation, and failure to improve them brings condemnation proportionate to what was given. Faith, obedience, and love are to grow in keeping with light and privileges received, opening the way for promises and blessings, while unbelief and neglect hold back from God, dishonor Him, and bring decrease of light and blessings. Those whose means, opportunities, and abilities are greatest have the greatest responsibilities, yet no more is asked than each can do in his sphere, for poverty is not expected to give alms it has not to give nor the feeble to exert the energies of the healthy.

Ability and cultivated intellect enlarge responsibility where great light has been given, and must be sanctified, wholly yielded, and rightly directed by religion to strengthen in God, advance intelligent experience in overcoming with daily victories, and help others in the way of life. Intellect alone is insufficient, for men may honor intellect yet despise the heart if it is not wedded to true goodness, and ability not yielded to Christ proves dangerous to owner and others, leading them apart from truth and away from Christ and, put to wrong use, aiding evil and ruining souls. Talents of influence are gifts for service that must not be wasted or given to Christ's enemies but consecrated to His work, and faithfulness with a small trust leads to greater responsibility and entrance into joy.

Faithfulness in what is given determines greater responsibility and reward entrusted later, with talents expected and returns expected measured according to what each received. Guilt is measured by light, opportunities, and privileges left unused, and judgment also accounts for influence exerted in encouraging others to sin or keeping them from serving in soul-saving work, while faithfulness to Christ would bring not only eternal life but help draw others into the kingdom.

Abilities and privileges are entrusted for His service to be valued, used well, and cultivated through sustained effort to bless others, preparing servants to be a blessing. Talents not improved or put to work for the cause bring condemnation and darkness in proportion to light received, failing stewardship includes neglecting available means to improve abilities, and careless use weakens ability to serve.

Faithfulness, not the number of gifts, is the measure of service, requiring each to use talents to the utmost and to best capacity for the Lord with integrity rather than for human approval, selfish rivalry, selfishness, or carelessness. Such service sets an example others can safely follow and helps form one's own character and the family's character for the higher life, and faithfulness with few or many merits honor, commendation, greater responsibility, and sharing the Lord's joy.

Faithful Use and Increase

Being faithful over a few things means diligently and wisely using what has been given to serve God and advance truth, actively trading with it to gain increase and putting it out to the exchangers instead of returning it unused, and gifts improve and multiply when so used in service. Faithfulness in a small responsibility is commended and becomes the ground for greater responsibility and rulership over many things, together with entrance into the joy of the lord. The faithful servant who uses entrusted resources to advance the work and save souls receives approval, and servants who improve and double what was entrusted receive that commendation and welcome. The Lord expects His own with usury or positive increase and is not satisfied with bare return, and merely retaining capital without trading, letting it lie dormant, or wrapping it in a napkin is unfaithfulness. Entrusted resources, money, means and influence are to be put to work in the Master's service and returned with increase, and each person saved becomes a talent gained who can in turn help save others, continually increasing the harvest returned as both principal and interest according to work. The present is the gracious opportunity to trade for glory and invest for salvation, relieving the widow and fatherless, because probation may end and the account be forever fixed, with joy at reaping time and sheaves gathered as the recompense of fidelity and unselfish use.

Faithful use doubles talents and increases capability, grace, effectiveness, knowledge and power, for God works with exerted ability and strengthens abilities through earnest service, sacrifice and cooperation with the Holy Spirit, bringing dormant powers to new life. All blessings belong to Him and are to be used according to His Word for building up truth, keeping self out of sight with no selfishness or worldly ambition, and doing one's utmost whether many or few, with the Spirit leading continually to greater efficiency. The talent is multiplied through use, and even the one-talented man was expected to do his best, for had he traded his talent would have been multiplied, while failure to improve falls short of the high standard privileged to be reached. Faithfulness means whole-hearted earnest sacrifice and cooperation with God, yielding as an instrument for the Holy Spirit, giving self first, with daily surrender, prayer, watchfulness, industry, economy and exact honesty, and with eye single to God's glory. As an instrument cherishing and obeying His promptings, God works with the servant to increase and strengthen every faculty, deny old inclinations, overcome propensities, form new habits, enlarge the heart for more power, rouse dormant energies, and do more and better work with greater gifts and every provision for increase.

Time and speech are precious entrusted gifts to be wisely used in trading, which cannot be done without close connection with Christ, and those vitalized by His divine nature work in His lines. The talents are mind to understand how to work, eyes to discern opportunities and do no shiftless work, means to invest, ears to listen for commands, knees to bow in heartfelt prayer, and feet to run in the way of commandments, with blessing resting on receiving from God and rendering back to Him. Right use cultivates the highest powers to highest spiritual efficiency in spirit, word and action, puts means out to the exchangers where it blesses one who blesses another so money in circulation steadily multiplies itself, and makes men and women channels of usefulness under the law of giving. Faithfulness means cultivating, improving, disciplining and directing the mind and its powers, since ignorance does not increase humility or spirituality, and Christ is best glorified by those who understand truth and represent Bible religion to promote His glory. God assigns work according to powers and requires every faculty including intellect to be put to use and developed lifelong for practical service in temporal and religious work, with responsibility increasing with amount received, yet consecrated talents growing through grace and faithful diligent use of even a little preparing for greater service.

Entrusted means and wages of suffering and blood are a loan and trust to be handled with personal responsibility and put into circulation freely, unselfishly and cheerfully to work unworked barren fields until they become fruitful trees of righteousness through knowledge of God and His Word. Each person must employ his own gifts rather than delegate, transfer, bargain away or merge stewardship into another, conference, publishing house or leading mind, and no person or council may weigh, lessen, control or take over another's gifts and individuality. Each is responsible for the particular resources given, the one given one talent answering for that one and not for five or two, and is not accountable for gifts never had, with small gifts no reason for complaint since faithful use of little is judged as faithful as much. Entrusted means remain a responsibility that cannot be escaped by transferring them to family, but are to be used willingly and not grudgingly, improved for glory and returned as consecrated offering, with even the humblest having something to impart. The time to use talents faithfully is now during probation before opportunity ends and the account is fixed, work must be done while it is day, trading at once on the first endowment and redeeming the time in light of the nearness of the coming. Readiness for the coming requires unselfish vigilant labor with prayerful meditation and personal piety, neither quiet devotion alone nor constant activity without inner life being enough, and faithfulness in present responsibilities prepares for greater service instead of idleness.

Faithful servants gain increase only through God's gift and grace and can claim no independent merit, yet God rewards sincere service as though the merit were theirs, and the servant takes no credit because gift and power to use it come from God. The approval may come as surprise to the steward who knows he has only done duty, and eternal rewards are purchased by Christ not earned, yet judgment takes works into account and each may strive for the highest reward in exact proportion to work done and improvement made. Abilities are learned by putting them to work, idle ones should be given work and have mistakes corrected so they can serve again, and teaching people how to serve helps them use and increase talents. Gifts can be abused, misapplied or perverted, and must not be, but are to be wisely improved in self-denying service, sowing truth by teaching and example, proclaiming present truth including in cities, and leading others to truth as part of bearing the burden with spiritual growth and heavenly cooperation. As talents are faithfully used, the Holy Spirit recalls God's truths and makes the Word a living power from God working with human effort, not human learning, so praise belongs to God.

Using talents in God's work increases talents, as Moses became eloquent, patient, self-reliant, and competent for the greatest work ever entrusted to mortals, and the same character change comes whenever people give themselves wholly to God and obey His commands. Spiritual life must grow, with Christians making best use of gifts and opportunities and steadily advancing in knowledge of Christ and Christlike character. Gifts are to be used wisely and faithfully in service, and faithful use can increase influence for good. Doing precious work requires earnest, devoted, daily, hourly, momentary consecration, the Lord accepts no superficial work, and cultivating other traits to combine with and sanctify strong traits already possessed makes a person a power for good. Faithfulness over a few things means enduring God's test and proving, whether entrusted with one, five, or ten talents, by perseveringly seeking the Lord, giving self wholly to Him, being willing to do anything even in the humblest unpleasing position, holding every capability and every dollar as a trust with nothing misapplied to please self and the eye single to God's glory.

An abundance of means can weaken incentive to develop talents and spoil faithful service. Increased responsibility requires bearing burdens and growing by effort, directing and carrying out plans, not confining interests to one locality or multiplying facilities in one place since the field is the world, improving time, money, means, and opportunities instead of wasting them, and awaking from slumber since slothfulness provokes wrath. Faithfulness is putting talents to work for others' good in the master's service rather than hoarding knowledge or abilities, serving the redeemer without seeking thanks. Talents are to be put to use and develop through use, with education and service extending from the church to regions beyond. Faithfulness includes diligently using, developing, and persevering in improving entrusted abilities for God's glory, with work, forethought, care, and self-denial training people to become faithful stewards, and practical obedience strengthens confidence, multiplies talents, and prepares for greater responsibility and entering God's kingdom.

Servants are to improve and faithfully use entrusted abilities, opportunities, and powers consecrated to Him and increased in God-given work, keep laboring vigilantly rather than becoming satisfied with having done a little, and become efficient thorough workers performing duties without loss, which God can use to sow seed or reap harvest in conversion of souls. Talents and sacred truth must be used and shared, developed and improved, multiplied and returned with increase through constant use, and not hidden, left idle, or left unused, and being good and faithful means steady spiritual growth where truth as seed must be nourished or it loses germinating power, leaving the unnourished as lifeless branches and stumbling blocks with untrimmed lamps and no strength for warfare. No one is stationary but all true subjects advance according to spiritual advantages received, growing up into the living Head in piety, and faithfulness means using gifts to bless others and bring praise rather than spending them in criticism. Every talent belongs to God and must be used to very best account without rusting through inaction, appreciating spiritual blessings and gathering every ray of light while being careful and economical in temporal things, including physical energies and personal influence, since blessings are not given to those who do not value them.

Using talents for God's glory requires putting away selfishness and self-confidence and allowing the Holy Spirit to govern and sanctify powers, mind, and heart. The Lord gives every person his work and requires a return, and being good and faithful means receiving and believing in Christ and cooperating with God, gaining right knowledge of God which is life and peace, and standing ready for aggressive warfare against evil. Faithfulness begins by first giving self to the Master, then using talent in helpful service in every land and community, seeking families needing spiritual help, refusing to hoard money while missionary work remains, and spending means for foreign causes, translation and distribution of books, and new enterprises.

Unfaithful Neglect and Loss

Hiding the talent in the earth means hiding it in the world and in worldly business interests where it brings no return to God, through self-seeking, careless inaction, indifference, neglect of what might have been done, idleness, love of pleasure and love of this world, business cares and perplexities, misuse of bounties to weaken the body, laziness, dishonesty, reckless spending and wasting of life. Such burying, wrapping in a napkin and merely retaining capital without trading, letting it lie dormant and returning it unused, is a great wrong that disappoints the Master, deprives Him of increase with usury, imperils spiritual interests, may bring suffering and want, and causes eternal loss of opportunities, of souls that might have been saved, and of an eternity of bliss, for which the slothful untrustworthy servant is held responsible and falls under denunciation and penalty when the Master comes to investigate each course. Merely returning what was entrusted while neglecting what could have been gained or done is not enough, for rewards scrutinize every talent and expect interest in proportion to capital, talents increase as used, and neglect of opportunities and abilities made available through Christ is also brought to account.

Fear and a false view of God lead to hiding talents instead of serving, for complaint of severe requirements reveals no trust in free mercy. God is not a harsh judge and exacting creditor but a rich giver and rich provider, a fountain of inexpressible love, who bestows gifts according to ability to trade upon His goods and lay up a good foundation, placing men in His vineyard to return fruit and to relieve suffering humanity bought with blood, yet receives very little. The unfaithful servant hides from selfish anxiety to benefit himself, thinking improvement will require giving all back to the owner.

Having only one talent or small gifts does not excuse burying them, comparing resources with others, complaining about limited ability, withholding through fear or love of money, shrinking through distrust and fear of criticism or loss, risking means in alluring schemes, or leaving them idle. Each remains responsible for using what he has in God's work for its advancement and success, for faithfulness is measured by use of what one has and not by greatest ability or highest position, and fidelity and loyalty with few talents satisfy the Lord as surely as with many. Fear and distrust do not excuse neglect, for the hider is condemned as wicked and lazy and the unused trust is taken away and given to one who will use it well, while faithfulness may require taking prudent risks rather than cowardice, since caution that encourages inaction is harmful. Even the one-talented man was expected to do his best, and had he traded his talent would have been multiplied.

Doing nothing is sinful neglect, for feeling no interest for sinners while seeking merely to save one's own soul and remaining indifferent to the condition and destiny of fellow men is hiding talents in the earth. There will be no idlers in the kingdom of heaven, and burying instead of using in soul-saving service is slothfulness. Those who do this cannot long retain God's favor, will fail to put forth sufficient effort to secure their own salvation, forfeit favor and the star-gemmed crown, and throw away opportunity to obtain reward.

Unfaithfulness includes reckless spending, self-indulgence, misuse and weakening of mind and body, selfishly spending property, time, strength, mental ability and opportunities on self, withholding help from those in need, love of money, frivolous worldly self-centered life, trusting riches and impatience of restraint, and turning the talent into wrong channels to glorify self or satisfy selfish desires. Life, health, reasoning powers and physical and mental strength are gifts to guard, preserve and employ diligently for God's glory and the upbuilding of His kingdom, bringing habits into conformity with His will and seeking His wisdom. Turning prosperity, money and property held in trust to do good into wrong channels does positive harm to the holder and tempts and harms souls for whom Christ died.

Unused talents are lost and given to those who will work, for talents improve and multiply as used in the Master's service and the servants who gained more had used what they received. Burying leaves ability to degenerate and light to diminish, failing to improve means falling short of the high standard one is privileged to reach, and brings loss of everlasting life and eternal inheritance and exclusion, with condemnation proportionate to light neglected. Faithfulness over few leads to responsibility over many and entry into joy, while failure to develop God-given abilities leads to loss and faithfulness and overcoming lead to reward according to works and eternal glory.

Refusal to give self to God and serve Him, refusal to improve light, privileges, exalted attainments freely presented though purchased at immense cost, minds, senses, effort and opportunities, turning gifts against God or using them to lead others away, and perverting talents to Satan's service forfeits fitness for the heavenly kingdom and favor and casts away the crown of life. Every talent misused is recorded as robbery in heaven and must be answered for when each is judged according to deeds. Anything short of full devotion with money, consecration and entire heart, soul, mind and strength to save souls opposes the work, for there are only two places to deposit treasures, in God's storehouse or in Satan's, and all not devoted to Christ's service is counted on Satan's side to strengthen his cause.

Feeling one's testimony is not needed in a large church and therefore doing nothing is burying one's talent. Faithfulness over few requires taking special burden upon oneself, knowing where to take hold to labor, and working with energy, watchfulness, prayer and diligent performance of duty. Seeking religious privileges or greater profits while taking no burden, laying off former burden and doing scarcely anything is unfaithfulness, making idlers in the vineyard, dead weights increasing the labor of burden-bearers, and withered branches with dearth of soul.

Final Reckoning and Reward

The verse depicts the final reckoning when Christ returns after long absence as Chief Shepherd and Judge to settle accounts with servants to whom He delivered His own goods according to ability, investigating each servant's course personally by name from the books of heaven where a day-by-day record builds for reward or punishment, with no second probation afterward. The talents belong to the Master as lent capital not our own for investment, so each must account personally for whether they were improved by active trading to gain increase or abused by letting capital lie dormant, digging in the earth, burying, hoarding, or spending as pleased, and the time to use them faithfully is now before opportunity ends and the account is fixed. At that reckoning the servant entrusted with five talents who traded and gained five more hears good and faithful, faithful over few, ruler over many, enter into joy, in contrast to hiding the lord's money which brings the charge of wicked and slothful and the taking away of the talent to give to him who has ten.

At the judgment, including the investigative judgment, each stewardship will be strictly examined and each rewarded according to work, effort, talents received and ability given, including abilities, time, words, money, influence, and light of truth received. People are justified by faith but judged and rewarded by works, for faith is not proved by profession alone but love shown in works including care for the poor and afflicted is genuine, and even a small act done from love is accepted and rewarded. The reward is proportionate to improvement, God expects returns with interest according to trust given yet does not require ten talents increase from one talent but accepts one talent used to the best account, while punishment follows abuse when the Master calls to account.

The verse promises that faithful use even of what is small is met with the commendation good and faithful, with greater responsibility and rulership over many things, and with entry into the joy of the lord. Faithfulness in using what God entrusts, including material means, is the measure of stewardship for those with much and those with little alike, who must put means to work for God's cause rather than selfishly retain them, risk them in alluring schemes, or leave them idle, for having fewer gifts does not excuse burying them. Faithful servants improve gifts through use to bless others and honor God, and such stewardship prepares them to answer to Christ at judgment.

Faithfulness in small responsibilities qualifies for greater ones, for God entrusts work according to capacity and tests through humble daily duties done willingly, cheerfully, carefully and thoroughly before entrusting greater work and the true riches of everlasting life. Human work is to be faithful in little duties on the plan of addition, and God then works on the plan of multiplication, so that small faithful efforts become the most precious influences in His work. Promotion to ruler over many comes only after faithfulness over few by wisely using the two talents entrusted, climbing step by step thorough in least things with solidity and intelligent knowledge, not skimming the surface or grasping for the highest round while self-inflated, overestimating capability for five talents, and producing defective superficial work.

The words are spoken with joy and satisfaction when account is taken after probation closes and destiny is decided, approving faithful work with money, influence, capabilities and time, raising servant to friend and ruler, rewarding as if merit were their own. The faithful claim no merit, feel they have done only duty and that deficiently, and know they would be bankrupt for eternity without the capital He advanced, yet Christ delights to bestow blessing and invites into His joy. Hearing it requires finishing work to God's acceptance before probation ends, including faithful stewardship of means by giving property to spread the cause rather than withholding to save for children, for living poor amid abundance to hoard injures standing and forms selfish character in children. The verdict turns on the life record reviewed year by year, spoken when armor is laid off at close of life only if work is well done by walking in light, consistent Christianity, self-denial, redeeming hours from self-service, and saving souls as golden sheaves.

Entering the joy of the Lord includes the joy of seeing souls redeemed through one's influence, sharing the joy Christ had in enduring the cross and seeing results and being satisfied, meeting the redeemed in prepared mansions. Those who faithfully return to the Lord what is His receive treasure and hear commendation, and when He comes in clouds with power and great glory and believers meet around the great white throne, light and glory beam upon the faithful from Christ's face. Those who receive it will in heaven see around them those they labored for with crowns of glory, for faithful work that helps bring souls to salvation endures.

The promised joy can be tasted in this life in communion with Jesus, rest and peace, and is reflected in pure unselfish happiness from wisely using gifts; peace is the present reward and entrance into joy the future reward. Faithfulness over few is faithful discharge of duty to warn the world by exercising all talents including pen, press, voice, purse, and sanctified affections, coming very near to Jesus and showing true holiness, and faithfulness not size earns approval. Faithful self-denying work in new fields from love for Jesus and souls with pure purpose to glorify God is met with help, strength, blessing and commendation, so the weak offering talent as consecrated gift become strong in disinterested service. Such faithfulness means not hiding talents in business cares but imparting light of truth especially in family, avoiding mastery and supremacy, taking Christ as partner, advancing with the third angel's message, and holding confidence firm to the end for treasure laid up by the throne.

The verse presents one of two eternal outcomes, contrasted with being told to depart as one never known and with the unprofitable cast into outer darkness; use of the few things decides eternal destiny and fitness to be made ruler. The parable illustrates the last general judgment where each is dealt with according to use of talents, character revealed, the righteous having part in resurrection of life while those doing evil receive according to works. Failing to use abilities is neglect even without openly vile acts, and those withholding efforts and bringing no fruit are judged as unfaithful and placed among those on the left. Responsibility is individual and cannot be laid on minister or another, requiring improving talents by putting them to exchangers in active work at home, family, church and world with skill and efficiency as home missionaries, including all improvement that might have been made.

Entrance into the kingdom and eternal life are not earned by merit but are gifts of grace purchased by Christ's blood, secured by faithfulness, given to the obedient whose wills are subjected to Christ. The welcome is spoken to sinners under sentence of death who have done nothing worthy of life and are wholly without merit as to own goodness, accepted only because clothed with Christ's spotless righteousness, answering the opposite exchange in which sinless Christ who did nothing worthy of death died that those worthy only of death may receive life. By grace chosen as servants bearing cares and united with Christ by living faith as laborers together with God, they handle the Master's capital to invest and increase as wise stewards, faith working by love purifying from defilement, for no one can hoard goods and do nothing as the slothful servant did with one pound and lost his soul.

The faithful will be welcomed into the city of God and Holy City at Christ's return, connected with the reward of the redeemed who have everlasting life and serve as kings and priests, when earthly trials will seem small. Those faithful in the closing work and steadfast in service enter with well done and share joy, doing as He would in their place with every action meeting right, equity and justice. The welcome requires being made worthy by Christ's death, receiving Him as redeemer, partaking of the divine nature, standing without spot, clothed in His spotless righteousness; to provide it Christ laid aside royal robe and crown and died. It is God's acknowledgment each should want when life record closes, spoken to those making peace by losing sight of all but Christ, binding by living faith, opening the heart with no padlock, abiding in Him, beholding Calvary's love changed into fitness.

Commendation and entrance into joy are for the good and faithful servant who is faithful in small duties with humility and spiritual faithfulness. Faithful service is commended and rewarded with entrance into joy, including revealing righteousness and binding believers through benevolence rather than selfishness, living as citizens of heaven, cultivating grace, and staying united. Even one apparently humble consecrated person in soul, body, and spirit has duty enlarged by the Holy Spirit and burning zeal for Christ, communicating light and grace to the whole church and being fitted for rulership and joy, and the power of truth in and out of the church is what members' zeal, purity, and intelligence make it. Even a small trust faithfully managed leads to greater responsibility and welcome into the Lord's joy, applied to young men who consecrate abilities to study Scripture, warn sinners, and win souls, and to young people held responsible for opportunities, knowledge, and experience to be earnestly used in His work.

People entrusted with resources including money are accountable to God and must answer to Him, with means as trusts for doing good and advancing His cause when required rather than for needless extravagance, indulgent idleness, or relinquishing control so service is prevented, and faithful stewardship is rewarded with greater responsibility and a share in the master's joy. Faithfulness in entrusted work leads to greater responsibility and the master's joy, applied to ministers who develop abilities by active labor, study, and meeting opposition to become prepared for wider service, and to workers who rely on God for wisdom while fully developing mental and spiritual strength to understand His purposes and advance the work, with faithful use even amid mistakes, including sharing truth and removing harmful habits so example injures none, leading to calls to higher work. Faithful, energetic, and unselfish use of God-given abilities, influence, and money to save souls and serve heaven rather than the world brings commendation and entry into the Lord's joy, and bears fruit with souls gathered for the Master as part of the recompense at the final harvest.

Faithful service in what is entrusted brings the Lord's approval and joy and awakens rejoicing in heaven. Those entrusted with gifts and opportunities are accountable and must use and increase them to the fullest extent according to light received under Christ's oversight because He paid an infinite price for their service, and diligent service with a fully consecrated heart prepares for approval, while neglect leaves an undesirable record. God examines work for Him and commends it as good and faithful only when faithful, warning that dealing with people including correcting those in care must not overlook faults so lightly that sin seems harmless, since work must withstand the investigative judgment and God's searching eye. Abilities and powers entrusted by God are to be used for His glory, and faithful use leads to eternal happiness; faithfulness in work is commended, while the unfaithful servant must face the result of unfaithfulness at the final accounting.

Character Fitted for Approval

Divine approval is given for faithfulness rather than for outward success, and missionary work done under adverse pressure, poverty and hardship is not recorded as failure but is registered above as truly successful. The reward does not depend on seeming success but on the spirit in which the work is done, so canvassers and evangelists who have not had the success they prayed for are still accepted when their effort has been faithful, sincere and earnest in duties placed in their hands while looking ever to Jesus. Human estimates of who accomplished the most good make serious mistakes, for God alone judges capabilities and discerns time and talents employed for Him, humble work done as unto God counts for more than bustle and show, and those faithful with few talents receive just as large a reward as one entrusted with many. This standard requires every soul in every line of work to be a faithful steward looking to Jesus and working after the divine pattern without Satan's sophistry, amid increased wickedness, heavy judgments and chastening losses, striving earnestly in self-denial and self-sacrifice, with full reward given not in this life but when judgment sits and books are opened. Readiness for that reckoning requires trading upon God's property by presenting Christ in character, accepting the Holy Spirit, serving with singleness of purpose in holiness without guile, harshness or condemnation, being as true as steel to principle, putting whole heart into winning souls because souls are perishing, letting fear of God rather than fear of men rule, and being up and doing appointed work now before working time ends.

Goodness and faithfulness are both required of everyone seeking everlasting life, and goodness alone is not enough. Faithfulness in earthly responsibilities leads to greater responsibility and entrance into the Lord's joy, shown by living unselfishly and using influence to bless others and by helping persuade those outside Christ to accept gospel hope. A life lacking goodness and faithfulness and leading souls away from God cannot receive the commendation, and approval is denied to one whose conduct and works have not been right, for it depends on faithful service.

Faithfulness includes tenderness, love and sympathy for those for whom Christ gave His life, and requires cleansing from impure and selfish principles. It means wearing Christ's credentials of meekness, lowliness, compassion and love, with tender hearts and symmetrical characters, well-chosen words and firm resistance of evil, cooperating with Him to bless, uplift, strengthen and ennoble others by studying His character and showing His spirit, ways and works in daily dealings. Malice, guile, hypocrisy, envy and evil speaking are incompatible with entering heaven, abhorred by God, and no one revealing them will receive the welcome at the end of the journey, for the commendation belongs to the faithful, not to those cherishing a spirit that crowds out or supplants others. The opposite is the slothful servant who hid his talent, whose sin was neglect and failure to improve what was entrusted, living for self, acting discourteous, un-Christlike and unmerciful toward those purchased by Christ's blood, discouraging and driving souls away instead of gathering with Him.

God's final approval will not be spoken while contempt, criticism and condemnation of brethren remain in the heart. Faithfulness over a few things requires being a doer of the Word in little as well as large things, including refusing to criticize, disparage or cut away the influence appointed to His messengers, purging out the leaven of Pharisaism as the spirit of criticism and accusing, especially contempt for God's servants and criticism of their missionary work because they do not work exactly after one's own plans. Divine judgment approves faithful workers even when human criticism discerns only defects in manners, words and handling of Scripture, whereas faultfinding that writes flaws, demoralizes workers, places them in unfavorable light and discredits their counsel stands opposite to God's verdict and repeats Satan's work of misrepresenting Christ and making good things appear evil. Searching for something to criticize puts critics on Satan's side, and unjust unfeeling speeches, scornful criticisms, scoffing and discourteous remarks that bar the way of God's servants and discourage laborers show unfaithfulness and failure to give the trumpet a certain sound, raising the test whether Christ can speak the words to such critics.

Being faithful over a few things means loving God with all heart, soul, strength and mind and neighbor as self by giving every power of the whole being to unselfish service. It is exercising every capability to prepare for Christ's coming, working while day lasts before night comes, preparing the King's highway, showing God's ownership by purified heart and obedient thoughts and affections, rising to higher consecration through prayer and the Holy Spirit, redeeming every moment because judgment review is near, purifying the soul by obeying truth, leaving no duty undone, bearing fruit unto righteousness in union with Christ, and putting talents out to the exchangers because Christ is hungry for souls. It means keeping heart and life pure, following Christ's example of doing a great work in short time, refusing to leave the most important work to answer opponents, reaching common minds with plain pointed arguments that answer the world's cry for help, with God and angels working with such efforts. It means keeping the way of the Lord and doing His will at all times in humility and trust, making use of every talent and studying how to make best use of precious light from His Word, since each person is on test and watched to prove faithfulness. It also means guarding the simplicity of faith, refusing to pervert any gift to Satan's service, refusing to employ mind in work leading from right principles, refusing to cherish worldly errors and mingle error with truth or tamper with false dishonoring doctrines obscuring landmarks, keeping safeguards by watchfulness, prayer, care in associates, lowering no religious principle, weakening no faith, marring no soul, with decided reformation, lest prostituted powers bring weakness, inefficiency and peril, while the reward of entering joy is clean hands, pure heart and noble purpose.

Readiness to hear the commendation and welcome into joy requires a changed experience in which self is subdued by the Holy Spirit's sanctifying power through full consecration of mind and body. Thorough conversion is needed, and God's power can keep a person from displaying weak points of character. Hearing it requires daily conversion, coming into right relation to God, carrying out His will and working in harmony with Christ so the Spirit and holy angels can dwell with and mold the life, avoiding hasty words and faultfinding and doing work faithfully, so fashioned parents renew children's characters after Christ's likeness instead of leaving them to ruin. Selfishness and unwillingness to bear burdens stand in the way and must be changed.

Those united by faith who believe and receive Him and cooperate with Him in character development will hear the commendation in His presence, their character revealing His glory in them, with faithfulness leading to greater responsibility and entrance into joy. Probationary time is given to develop a preparatory heaven below, forming character entitling one to hear the words, requiring willingness to be servants of the living God using all capabilities to reach the highest standard, climbing round after round with clearer knowledge of God, His ways and works, then stepping into immortal inheritance which is entering joy. Serving God on earth fits workers for participation in God's work in heaven, their character and holy service now shaping what they will be, and faithful use builds character on Jesus Christ the sure foundation giving the world right influence, while impulses to goodness are recorded and workers through whom God worked are commended as they see redeemed souls through their service.

The commendation and rich reward belong to those who remain faithful and do His will to the end and enter joy; merely beginning the course does not guarantee it, for truth must be cherished in heart and practiced faithfully. Paul's finished course and kept faith is the example of one who can await the benediction, and the eternal honor follows a life of humble obedience, faithful character building, fighting the good fight and finishing the course in love and honor to God. Being unable to finish all hoped does not make a servant unfaithful when he has labored earnestly and carried more than one person can bear, for faithfulness is commended with greater responsibility and shared joy.

Promotion to ruler over many comes only after faithfulness over few, shown by wisely using entrusted talents, climbing step by step without skipping, being thorough, deep, masterful, solid, intelligent, careful and complete in little things and in that which is least as evidence of fitness for heavier burdens. Those self-inflated and self-sufficient who overestimate capabilities and feel able for five talents when entrusted with two, who skim the surface, grasp for the highest round without climbing, and whose work shows defect, remissness and superficial gloss, do not meet the righteous standard and cannot receive approval for larger responsibilities. Faithfulness means heeding God in daily concerns since greatest results often depend on small occurrences, distrusting own judgment and depending on divine strength and wisdom, progressing from strength to strength, grace to grace, glory to glory, receiving daily light made possible at infinite cost, for present light cannot sustain future strength any more than today's food sustains tomorrow. It is proved by good works more powerful than words, by virtuous life and unselfish acts testifying for God and charming beholders with transforming power into the divine image to God's honor. Christ gives Well done for earnest faithful use whether talents are great or small, asking no more than each can do in his sphere and not requiring what He never gave, not expecting the lowly uneducated to fight like the champion, poverty to give alms it has not, nor the feeble sick to exert energies of the healthy, but accepting according to what man has. Even one talent well used and humblest service with willing heart become consecrated, so none should idle aspiring after great things or mourning missing talents, but do present small work with earnest fidelity, same tact and diligence as in temporal matters, putting talent to exchangers by whole-souled labor to convert souls in darkness, accountable for right employment. Faithful service means doing duty where one is, making best use of gift without envy or complaint, facing account without grief or shame.

Christ values even humble faithful service, the trust having come to the church across generations with growing responsibility, and service is accepted when done to carry out the Master's will and promote His glory rather than self, clothed in His righteousness. The good and faithful servant is self-denying like Jesus, wisely improving God-given talents without abuse, perversion or misapplication, rewarded in small trust with greater responsibility and entry into joy, with present service as sowing truth by teaching and example.

Faithfulness means using entrusted abilities and opportunities to develop moral character, avoid disappointing the Master, and influence others toward Christlike conduct. God entrusts important work and expects gifts and committed truths to be used wisely and skillfully, with faithfulness in care as basis for greater responsibility. Well done measures whether teachers faithfully served, including seeking personal holiness, teaching obedience to God, and honoring the Holy Spirit's work among students. Abilities entrusted by God faithfully used for His glory bring success, commendation and reward.

The good and faithful servant youth is bound to God's throne by truth, untemptable from integrity, valuing God's favor above princes' favor and praise, not ashamed to display true colors in words, habits and practices even in a king's court, refusing every earthly mandate detracting from God's honor, laying talents without reserve at Christ's feet for His service with Christ enthroned in the soul. Such faithfulness over few is met by God's love and protecting shield and by signal honor before men.

Right use of talents even in smallest duties links a person by a golden chain to heaven. Living faith must run like threads of gold through daily work, with continual looking to Jesus and love for Him giving vital force to all undertaken, so daily work promotes Christian growth. Faithfulness over few is true sanctification consisting in cheerful performance of daily duties in perfect obedience to God's will.

Faithfulness in small responsibilities matters, and those entrusted with little are to serve diligently and unselfishly even in duties not specifically commanded, because talents and work belong to God. The Lord's Well done is for servants faithful with what was entrusted, and those betraying trust by misleading the young and adopting worldly practices cannot expect it, as unfaithful workers answerable to God for actions and influence.

Those constrained by Christ's love are faithful to God's work and Word. The good servant is not a sluggard, not non-committal, not divided in decision and sentiment, but of one mind and judgment, quick to detect errors and not slow to name them. He ever feels dependent on his Maker without shame, takes no credit but gives all honor to God, weeds out everything grieving His Spirit, and like Daniel improves every opportunity, trading on given talents by holy principles of the Word, which multiplies ability. The willing God-fearing humble worker increases in tact and wisdom because the Holy Spirit cooperates with him and heavenly agencies work with human agencies. God gives this work only to one making practical application of truth to his own soul with faith working by love and purifying the soul, working out salvation with fear and trembling as God works to will and do, praying and believing that God rewards diligent seekers, shown in taking up home responsibilities, lifting Jesus before family, extending efforts to neighborhood and church to communicate truth to perishing souls, which keeps first love fresh and strong.

Service in Daily Practice

Faithful stewardship is practical missionary service in home, family, church and world, enlightening minds, doing house-to-house labor, helping the brokenhearted, poor, sick, hungry and vulnerable, rescuing from evil and saving souls, with even small talents accomplishing the appointed work and unused ability deteriorating.
Trading and doubling means actively putting means, money, resources and influence to work in benevolence to spread the gospel, each person brought to truth becoming a talent gained who can help save others, while improved farms and buildings do not count as saved souls and cannot be taken to heaven.
Faithfulness with money means consecrating it wholly to saving souls, advancing missions, opening new fields, building meetinghouses free from debt, supporting schools and sanitariums, relieving the destitute, and circulating it at once rather than hoarding, burying or spending on self.
Faithfulness requires answering God's claims while alive and cannot be deferred to death, for leaving means to wicked, unbelieving or already abundant relatives instead of securing it to God's treasury robs God, so aged parents should with sound mind, prayer and experienced counsel make legally sound wills and dispose of property themselves rather than shifting responsibility to children.

The verse is to be studied and compared with one's life record, requiring humility and putting away boasting and self-sufficiency, for neglect of small daily duties and omitting work that ought to be done displeases God, and many will lose heaven through such neglect rather than great vileness.
Faithfulness is woven into all temporal matters and every action, working from principle conscious of God's eye, doing one's best without constant oversight, with diligence, wise use of time, exactitude in business, and honest, impartial, loving and just dealing with authors and fellow workers.
The commendation belongs to faithful ministers who labor as stewards of heavenly truth, reprove, rebuke and exhort with long-suffering without swerving or worldly policy, bear the message bravely like Elijah, Nathan and John the Baptist regardless of cost, and it cannot be spoken to ministers whose churches are weak, sickly and ready to die.
The commendation applies to students who use school opportunity well, improve diligently and live obediently, to those patiently helping fellow students until dullness disappears, to Sabbath-school teachers in lifelong service, to canvassers, to youth and children trained for missionary work, and to parents training children.

The verse applies to people in positions of trust managing honestly, to honest farming and business, to food-work employees revealing Christ, to getting out books, to caring for the needy and the least, and to using influence justly.
Humble faithful workers, the poor through humility, trust and sympathy, children even when making mistakes, and the plain and unlearned are commended and welcomed, for the commendation is not reserved for a favored few with remarkable gifts but includes all from humblest to greatest with eternal life as reward.
Even the smallest talent and humblest service is wholly acceptable when offered as a consecrated gift with sincere heart and love to God, for Jesus adds the fragrance of His merits, and such willing service and entire obedience were secured by blood.
Faithful service with entrusted abilities even through self-denial, effort, suffering and work to save others is repaid by greater responsibility and joy that compensates trials, given of grace according to motive and love rather than exact amount, and none hearing the words will regret any sacrifice.

The verse rewards last-day use of temporal means where receivers give substance and through effort other souls embrace truth, with crowns and added stars for every soul saved, while withholding possessions and saving no souls loses the trust and earthly treasure.
Neglecting cities and unwarned people is not faithful service, so opportunities in cities, the South, Nashville, Europe, London, New York and foreign missions must be entered, with means divided and workers sent rather than piled in one place like Battle Creek.
God has chosen many to serve but those in trust may hinder them, responsibility and judgment belong to individuals as well as the church, no leader's position makes his judgment fit to control everyone, and Christ's servants answer to Him not to any earthly master nor are to be forced into one rigid pattern.
Blessings are to be used by directions in God's Word to build up truth, keep self out of sight, allow no selfishness or worldly ambition, hold Christ before the world, and seek God's counsel rather than self-glory.

Life itself with abilities, powers, organs and faculties is a talent owned by God by creation and redemption to be preserved, cultivated, dedicated and doubled in service, with health preserved by obeying its laws and strength used in self-denying exertion and constant exercise.
Time with its days, months and years is a talent to be valued, kept employed and used to work out salvation, benefit self, bless others and advance missions rather than wasted in idleness, talk or amusement, accepting available work instead of refusing for lack of pay.
Intellect, affections, speech, influence and other abilities used carelessly or to draw others toward what is low buries them, while faithful use serves God and blesses with fruitful results, and right use of speech edifies and saves rather than talking merely to talk.
Knowledge and opportunity without useful action do not earn commendation, but sharing received light gives greater capacity to receive more richly, while merely receiving without giving loses capacity and leaves churches barren.

The faithful servant trades by taking up home responsibilities, lifting Jesus before family, extending efforts to neighborhood and church, and being a blessing in the home, for abandoning household duties disqualifies from eternal riches.
The master promises commendation to faithful soldiers who stand firm in danger, oppose wrong, endure hardness, bear reproach and fight where conflict is hardest, with Daniel exemplifying the faithful servant who communes in prayer and openly acknowledges God before kings.
Jesus Himself gives the wages to faithful workers, and those wages are eternal reward not pay from men, so the talent is no reason to claim higher wages or demand large pay, and stewards must not refuse to work without stipulated wages.
God entrusts talents to be used with all diligence for physical and mental perfection, to relax effort and allow powers to stagnate is to be the slothful servant, and becoming dependable requires patient continuance, overcoming cowardice and inefficiency, and adding little by little.

Work is appointed according to ability under fixed spiritual laws where ends are reached only by means, and being faithful then made ruler requires education, practice, wise planning and placing each where experience fits.
The Lord measures servants by faithful fruit-bearing use, including strict impartial dealing, justice to the needy, growing in grace, loving God and neighbor, and separation from the world, for mere form without spirit is not faithfulness.
Faithful self-denying followers giving back the Lord's own act in copartnership accumulate heavenly treasure, means wisely invested has divine blessing, while hiding from selfishness brings the talent-hider's retribution.
People must answer for influence which can bring good or evil, talents of influence must be cherished to lead people to Christ, not wasted or given to His enemies, and account covers example given to younger ones and improvements made of abilities.

Faithful use includes supporting institutions that train workers, placing means where the Lord can cooperate, investing in sanitariums, schools and meetinghouses economically and with reference to destitute fields, and lending support to sanitarium and Avondale school work.
All endowed with reason are designed to be workers and each must do his own work with grace and may not excuse neglect by weakness, for one who refuses is shamed even by beasts.
God watches how His goods are used and institutions and leaders are accountable, goods lent to appointed men to represent God must be imparted to others, and those abusing influence and refusing discipline will be removed.
Servants are accountable for how they use what God entrusts, and selfishly spending God's money for personal desires while mission work goes unfunded, spending on gambling and entertainments, or diverting means into mining ventures and worldly plans does not merit commendation.

Money is God's money requiring an account, unfaithfulness will be exposed at the last day, while entering joy requires accounting for all received and practicing self-denial to work unworked fields.
Approval comes from wise self-denying use of money, health, skill and mental powers, learning to earn, keeping accounts, refusing waste on luxuries, giving from earnings to missions and the poor, and carefully managing small expenses.
Talents owned by God are to be invested in His work, and those given abilities must answer for choices, for putting resources to faithful use can multiply the work, while withholding or misdirecting can retard it.
The good and faithful servant acts wisely with money, proving money is not his god but making it serve God's purpose, gaining rich experience and becoming rich in good works without shifting responsibility by large sums.

Property is lent to test whether a person will accept Christ's character, to be used to bless the needy without honoring the wealthy above the poor, and those imparting lay up treasure and gain peace and citizenship hereafter.
Stewardship is proved by handling goods unselfishly rather than seeking own interests, and human beings are stewards not only of property but of the grace of Christ.
Faithfulness means using brief probationary life and influence to bless others rather than serving self, all excuses vanishing when the record is tested where each answers for deeds and good left undone.
Faithfulness means laying all attainments in surrender, counting all loss for knowing Christ, welcoming divine light, making Christ's character the principles of character, and receiving truth with childlike humility.

Christ's love enables proper valuing and use not abuse of talents, through Christ servants receive needed grace, and faithful service is a return for His sacrifice.
The faithful servant ever feels dependent on the Maker, takes no credit but gives all honor to God, weeds out what grieves His Spirit, and improves every opportunity, which multiplies ability.
God alone examines each life distinctly and judges abilities, human estimates make serious mistakes, humble work done as unto God counts more than show, and full reward is not in this life but when books are opened.
God gives each person his work with personal responsibility to be prayerfully considered and improved, preserving individuality, serving Christ not man, and refusing oppressive contracts or submission of conscience to human control.

Talents are to be faithfully cultivated and returned enlarged through diligent service to glorify God rather than please self, doing what He asks to become capable, with buried talents put to active work especially as the coming approaches.
Those who faithfully carry out God's work following Christ in doing good will share His work and enter His joy, and using talents rightly, valuing and developing them, and influencing others to seek preparation are part of that faithfulness.
All servants are required to improve talents, and still more is required of those professing to understand the way of life and guiding others, for the gifts entrusted to the church increase its obligations.
Those promoting own interests with pride and condemning others in rivalry, pursuing revenge, swaying God's cause into wrong lines without undoing it, or producing writings with self-exaltation on politics do not earn the commendation.

The question whether Christ can speak the words exposes unfaithfulness calling for thorough conversion, as a course like that of Dr. Kellogg would not merit approval.
The commendation follows thorough conversion and changed course, with God's power able to keep from displaying weak points, and past defective service can be pardoned when a person turns to God.
The words are spoken to the overcomer fitted to join the redeemed family, whose soul must be educated and disciplined for heaven, refusing soul-deforming burdens and giving self to preaching and preparing books.
Experience in church work that does not lead to united effort in saving souls does not prepare one, for faithfulness requires warning the world and leading sinners to salvation while time remains.

The master's commendation is for those serving faithfully with self-denial and unselfish love, taking up inconvenient duties rather than shunning them, and enduring tests refined and made clean by the Lamb's blood.
Good and faithful servants laboring together as in a tall grain field are promised rulership and joy, and workers through whom God has worked will be commended and fitted for heavenly service.
What Christ will say at His coming to one faithfully acting his assigned part prepares even an aged believer to use means faithfully, whether living through trouble with the remnant or dying beforehand, as Sister Magan enters joy and death did not take her crown.
Mere profession of faith has no value unless love is shown through works, belonging to the church or a name on the book does not secure heaven, and indolent professors will never receive commendation.

Those faithfully using grace receive approval and welcome, applied to diligent wholehearted work in using grace to serve, discharging duty and guiding by example until the master comes.
Fulfilling an assigned mission with faithful use of abilities brings results in the kingdom, with work and influence mattering in judgment, and returning talents requires care in associations.
The Master entrusts influence and means and will soon require an account, and faithfulness means soul and body converted, then using influence and publications to bring many to truth.
Every person is a steward on God's estate in probation, entrusted with cleverness, tact, skill, wisdom, time, opportunity, Word and Spirit to be used wholly for soul-saving beginning with consecration.

Faithful use in this life prepares for wider work in the future life, and gifts kept from corruption will be employed and fitted for heaven's appointed work.
The Lord entrusts goods as capital to advance truth and make known kingdom laws worldwide, and withholding turns aside His purposes and brings accounting as disloyal.
Christ entrusts talents to be exercised including bearing burdens, and time, money and influence grow in power through use in saving souls.
God entrusts abilities requiring diligent labor including advancement of the school, and talents must bless others and help the needy become self-supporting.

Commendation rewards faithful management including material means, hoarding must be answered for, while using means to advance work is faithful.
The Master will reckon according to ability, and the work includes using truth to persuade, sowing it and producing good works in loving service not quarrels.
Being good and faithful means thankful unceasing earnest work without slackening, never ceasing vigilance, keeping zeal alive and watching for opportunity.
God's approval is given to workers who make growth highest duty, faithfulness over few is earnestness to improve, and being made ruler means receiving help only after improvement is shown.

God requires faithfulness and eternal good depends on it, indolence fails through hiding duty, and a childless minister's wife has less excuse for indolence.
Means must not be wasted in desultory efforts but used decidedly to carry forward work, and the Lord's blessing rests on putting God's claims first before children.
The parable shows how God deals with the slothful, and faithful work is done in dependence on Christ with daily effort to know God more fully.
Using the Lord's goods unprofitably harms the servant, sanctified abilities help but selfish use hinders and spreads harmful influence with eternal consequences.

Applied to parents, talents must be used and increased at home, earthly families can reflect heaven, and homes should be kept free from moral evil.

Being a good and faithful servant means using talents to seek to save those with no knowledge of the truth, which requires a true missionary spirit of aggressive warfare, and failure leaves the church weak and apathetic and makes backsliders.
Being faithful means giving back to God of His own for advance of His work, adding new territory and establishing memorials acknowledging that all belongs to Him, using means to do for others what the gospel has done, with gifts so invested doubling in value.

Faithfulness includes putting abilities and resources to work in unselfish service, caring for the poor and unfortunate, dispensing mercy to relieve the hungry, naked, suffering and perishing, helping gather people to serve Christ, and manifesting unselfish interest in brethren and churches in poverty in proportion as prospered, while selfish acquisition and hoarding leaving the needy unaided is robbery bringing condemnation.
Money is a trust and capital from the Lord to be valued for advancing His cause and bringing salvation, kept ready to meet needs where He calls and traded as a sacred trust, and being good and faithful means applying it where need is greatest, giving freely for houses of worship, sanitariums, schools and preachers, helping families in need and returning tithes and offerings so money invested in souls brings heavenly treasure.
What God entrusts must not be wasted in scattered efforts but used earnestly to carry forward His work.
