Parable of the Talents in a CourtyardBible World

Matthew 25:25

And I was afraid, and went and hid thy talent in the earth: lo, there thou hast that is thine.

The servant, from fear, buried his master's entrusted talent in the earth and handed it back unused with no increase, instead of trading with it as required. His fear rested on the false charge that his master is hard and reaps where he has not sown, which he did not truly know as merciful Lord. The talent was not his own but his master's property lent in trust to be improved and returned with increase, representing any gift of life, ability, means, time, influence and light entrusted by God for service. To hide it is to bury abilities and means in worldly business, accumulation, self-spending and hoarding instead of putting them freely into circulation to advance His cause and save souls. Fear does not excuse the failure, for a reckoning is coming when use will be examined and rewarded according to faithfulness, while gifts used are enlarged and gifts left unused dwindle and are taken away.

Parable Setting and Servants

The verse belongs to the parable of the talents in the discourse of Matthew 24–25, spoken shortly before entering Gethsemane to prepare disciples for their work and for the second coming. That parable teaches that readiness for Christ’s return is not idle waiting or quiet meditation alone, but earnest, vigilant, watchful, unselfish labor in God’s service, with personal piety cultivated alongside diligent service. In it a master entrusts his goods to his servants in differing amounts according to known ability, and the hidden talent shows unfaithfulness and sloth in that trust, spiritual declension instead of consecrated work to increase capability and do continually better work with every facility provided. The goods so entrusted are time and talents, grace, power and ability to share present truth and warn that Christ is coming, to be traded upon with unreserved surrender after Christ’s self-sacrificing example in recovering sinners, and not buried through indolence. The Holy Spirit works with such human effort to make even small gifts effective, and what is entrusted must be returned with interest gained by trading and put into advancing the work Christ came to do.

The servants in the parable are Christ’s professed followers, His property by creation and by redemption at the great cost of His blood, called to serve Him and to answer personally at His return and judgment. Body, soul and spirit with all powers of thought, word and deed, with time and money earned, including the talent of means, are lent to be consecrated, trained and improved for saving fallen humanity and rescuing perishing souls from Satan’s power. Every converted soul, believer or unbeliever, humble consecrated man or ordained minister, is appointed to witness and trade upon every talent of light, ability and influence for the Lord rather than for self-pleasing, letting light shine in good works and putting what would lie unused out to the exchangers. That stewardship remains individual under God alone, preserving individuality without surrendering conscience to human control or oppressive confederacies, and talents left unused will be required again with the improvements the Lord requires, developing consecration, efficiency and tact as laborers together with God. Giving influence to the great apostate, serving Satan instead of the Lord, and resisting Christ crucified and the pleading of the Spirit perverts the trust and turns the master’s goods to selfish advantage, leaving no excuse when all good left undone and all improvement that cooperation with God would have made is charged to the account.

The instruction of Matthew 25:14–46 is to be studied and compared with the life record, putting away boasting and self-sufficiency which make Christ’s words of no effect. Every generation and church has its appointed trust, and every God-given ability and opportunity — powers of mind and body, time, money, influence, spiritual light and truth of God’s word, including care for the poor, afflicted, orphaned and widowed — will be examined in the judgment as to whether it honored God and blessed others. Church membership or profession of faith alone does not secure entrance into heaven, for genuine faith is shown by love expressed in works; acts done from love, however small, are accepted and rewarded, while the buried talent represents failure to put what God entrusts to active present use, especially for the salvation of others.

From fear the one-talent servant hid his lord’s money in the earth and then brought back only what had been given, without gain, shifting responsibility instead of trading to double it. His fear rested on the false charge that the master was harsh, following the enemy’s suggestions and revealing that he did not know his merciful Lord who had entrusted the gift in mercy and love; his refusal robbed the master of increase and arose from an ungenerous, unjust, avaricious and covetous spirit. Thousands now do the same, living for self and excusing themselves because they have but one talent, yet even one talent used for God, including the talent of speaking helpful uplifting words, would accomplish much and by careful use might have been doubled. Fear does not excuse the failure, for God’s gifts are to be diligently and conscientiously put to work, and if he believed he could not use it himself he should have entrusted it to someone faithful who could put it to use. Fearing that God will require the increase for His work, stewards tie resources up in earthly wealth instead of investing them to advance truth, and that fear and refusal bring condemnation and great loss.

Treating God’s entrusted goods with stinginess or exacting every possible cent is forbidden; those entrusted with them are to act with kindness and liberality. Christ entrusts responsibilities and gifts to His church across generations, increasing with light received and passed down, so that even the humblest service is a trust to be consecrated to the Master’s will and glory by God’s grace rather than self-reliance. God gives to every man his work and requires His own with usury from everyone who has received Sabbath light, to be improved and put to active use as lights in the world and a savor of life unto life, living up to light received so good works lead others to glorify the Father and souls are saved. Wisdom in Bible knowledge alone is not enough without receiving and believing in Christ, cooperating with God, and engaging in prompt aggressive warfare as minutemen for God. The servant’s failure stands as the showing of how God deals with the slothful in the final accounting, warning that work must not be done idly or apart from God but done at one’s best in dependence on Christ while seeking to know God and Christ more fully.

Fear and False Accusation

His fear rested on the false charge that the master is hard, reaping where he has not sown and gathering where he has not strawed, and that charge was suggested by the enemy and is untrue. It is false because all already belongs to God by creation and redemption, and the entrusting itself was done in mercy and love. To make that charge proves he did not know his merciful Lord, did not care to know God and Christ, and revealed dishonesty and ignorance. He came with murmuring and complaint, bound up what was given and did no good with it, then cast it back unused while claiming discernment.

He feared God would require improvement of the gift and then claim it all for Himself, so that he himself would gain nothing from any increase. That fear was joined with anxious desire to benefit self and unwillingness for the Lord to have its use, leading him to withhold the expected increase and accuse injustice. He feared the master would claim part of even a small entrusted talent, feared improvements made would not remain his, and so hid it instead of trading on it. His excuse blamed the master for his own neglect and exposed unfaithfulness in treating what belonged to the master as something to keep from God's service.

His refusal arose from an ungenerous, unjust, avaricious and covetous spirit projected onto his Lord, with distrust of those serving God, jealousy toward God, selfishness and ignorance. The principles that led him to hide the talent and rob God of its use make a person ungenerous and lead to coveting what is not one's own. To withhold capability lent in trust for self-pleasing and self-chosen paths is daily robbery of God that gives Satan control of thoughts, will and endowments instead of honoring God. Those who selfishly hoard gifts, bury means in houses and lands, spend time and means in self-gratification and worldly dress, and shut the heart to the poor and the cause, thereby show spiritual idleness as unfaithfulness and are exposed as unconverted.

Fear does not excuse failing to use what was entrusted, and returning it unused does not fulfill responsibility. Transferring responsibility to someone else does not lessen accountability, concealing what God entrusted does not excuse unfaithful use, and waiting for a different opportunity does not remove answerability. If he believed he could not use it himself he should have entrusted it to someone faithful who could put it to use, for talents including money, time, thought and labor are to be used to serve God and benefit others. His excuse leaves him judged wicked and slothful, and being afraid and thinking oneself not qualified nor fitted for the work does not excuse silence.

Pleas of fear, inability, feeling unqualified, timidity, self-distrust and inexperience are self-made excuses from inactivity, dreaming of ease, and self-devotion. Fear and feeling insufficient for the position are no excuse for failing to improve to the utmost what God has given, for God places each where He wills and pledges needed grace to the earnest seeker. Shunning responsibility, studying ease, and following inclination instead of duty brings curse, while responsibility is measured by powers originally bestowed and possibilities for improvement, not present weakened capacity. Low place does not make responsibility small, and pleading small responsibility while plodding without increasing in knowledge acts contrary to God's will which commands growth into full strength.

The fear that hides precious talents includes fear of cruel words, backbiting, reproach and envy from unruly tongues, scandal-mongers and agents of the enemy who find fault wherever the worker goes. It includes fear from debt, mortification, loss of heart-courage, and being left without sympathy or work, which takes away courage to labor even where souls everywhere need saving. It includes fear that keeps brethren from taking a discouraged brother by the hand with sympathy, prayers and encouragement to brace up, go to work and stay true to principle. When love is quenched by impressions, circumstances and opinions of men it leaves one idle where laborers are greatly needed, folding the hands and saying the task is hopeless instead of cooperating as channels of light.

Hiding through fear and self-occupation means keeping a defective disposition and deformed character, dwelling on manufactured difficulties, and remaining in fretting and complaint. Centering thought on poor self and feelings makes one afraid and wastes entrusted health and vigor through fear or neglect. The remedy is to stop looking at feelings and go to work on burdens next at hand in humility and trust, mastering stern realities in the Lord's name, losing sight of self in doing something good and noble, helping another reclaim himself, and bringing the Word into practical obedience. Earnest devoted service is to be continually yielded to God, for moving forward in faith completes the work and removes mountains of difficulty wholly by grace, while lack of faith, negligence and discouragement leave the work incomplete amid present last-day perils.

Talent Ownership and Meaning

The talent in the verse was never the servant's own but the master's property lent in trust to be traded, improved and returned with expected increase, and what people hold is stewarded not owned so that wasting it is robbing God. It is more than earthly employment or worldly goods, for eternity is in the reckoning and eternal interests are involved, and even the humblest service becomes a consecrated gift when done in the Master's bidding to advance His glory. The loan is a stewardship of grace and endowments for a sacred higher trust, secured by Christ at the cost of His own blood and sufferings to claim entire obedience, and God will require His own again with usury at the reckoning. The servant's charge that the master reaps where he did not sow and seeks to take what He did not give is false, because it is impossible to give God anything not already His since body and all are His by creation and redemption and bought with a price, with every blessing bearing the mark of Calvary. To leave the gift bound up unused in the ground and bring it back with murmuring, complaining and fear as excuse is to do no good with what was given, to fail to appreciate it, and to stand condemned as unfaithful.

A talent represents any gift or endowment, natural or spiritual, original or acquired, entrusted by God for service. It includes intellect, wealth, reason, grace, light, ability, influence, money, time, thought and labor, including the ability to write a book and qualities often found among the poor such as simplicity, humility, tried virtue and confidence in God. Light, ability and influence left unused will be required back with the increase the Master expected, and no one may transfer personal duty to another, complain of small gifts, or claim accountability only for much. One talent well used in patient toil and dependence on God can gain other talents and point others to Jesus, and the possessor of a few pence serving God with it is judged as faithful as the one who improved five, with faithful service rewarded with eternal life. The trust must not be treated with indifference, buried, sold, or surrendered to another man, council, conference, publishing house or human control to invest and merge individuality, for no one may weigh another's gifts in human balances or make as little as possible of them, and selling stewardship or taking all profits from writers beyond a mere pittance is unjust, unequal, narrow and conceited and hinders character development while incurring great and dangerous responsibility.

Entrusted talents further include life, health, reason, strength, time, influence, intellect, sympathy, affection, conscience, skill, pen, press, voice, purse, position, possessions, opportunities and power of speech, all to be used for others' good and God's glory rather than self. Kindly affections, generous impulses, spiritual understanding and social influence are to serve all who need help and not friends only, and mere possession without exercise increases responsibility and leaves guilt even while condemning others for misuse. Probationary time and large opportunities are lent with the Word as counsellor and the Spirit as free gift, with mind to understand work, eyes to discern opportunities and do no shiftless work, means to invest, ears to hear commands, knees to bow in heartfelt prayer, and feet to run in the way of the commandments, so that failing to cooperate and make the most of the loan brings loss while watching, receiving and rendering back for His glory brings blessing. Mind and its abilities are sacred trusts to be cultivated, wisely directed, treasured, strengthened by exercise and fed with rich intellectual food, so as to accomplish the greatest good, reflect glory to God, benefit young and old by association, and become a blessing to the world.

The talent also includes the light of present truth, Bible knowledge, justification by faith, gems of truth brought into character, the preciousness of the promise, the righteousness of Christ, and the love and influence of the Spirit. It includes the ability to speak helpful uplifting words, as well as health, bodily strength, singing, words, home duties and parental ability, all to be used to bless others and keep the soul in the love of God. Receiving truth is meant to develop heart, mind and affections and to help and enlighten unbelievers, not to be hoarded, and trading means putting every ray of light and jot of influence on the Lord's side, glorifying God, warning against making everything of the world, and standing ready for the work given. Burying intellect and money in business that perils the soul rather than saves it, or burying self, influence and ability in planning how to make money and lay up earthly treasure, proves character, for one who would bury one would bury ten, and disobeying the command to trade brings loss of all, even ability itself. The Master requires the whole person and all entrusted, and blessing with angelic ministry and increased ability comes only through earnest daily self-denial, cross-bearing, keeping grace trimmed and burning, and sinking empty vessels into the fullness of God's love until Christ becomes a well of water springing up unto everlasting life.

Life itself is a most solemn sacred trust, costly in light of Christ's sacrifice, bought by Him at great cost and still owned by God. Ownership rests on creation and redemption, for people are His by being made in His image and by being ransomed from Satan through the only begotten Son, the Majesty of heaven, who gave His life, with life coming moment by moment from Him the source of all life and preserved by His power. Every person with reasoning ability will be called in judgment to give account for this talent with no excuse for neglect, and must highly value, dedicate, preserve and use every power, organ, sinew, muscle, faculty and strength of the living machinery to honor and glorify Him. The talent must be improved by use and doubled in God's service, thereby revealing a character in accordance with God's character to a world sunken in sin, while failing to live the life of Christ fails the mark of the high calling despite every provision made through Christ's death to reach the standard placed before all.

Talents are loans wholly belonging to the Lord, whether held by believer or unbeliever, high or low, as His purchased property by creation and Calvary, given with liberty to improve or abuse, so boasting is excluded and no part is to be squandered on selfish indulgence. No person is his own but only trustee and steward of all capabilities and every dollar, to be held to reckoning and tested, with eye single to God's glory and nothing misapplied to please self. Everything possessed, including income, abilities, opportunities, body, soul, spirit, powers of thought, word and deed, time and money earned, with every jot of influence as power for good or evil, is entrusted to be consecrated, trained, educated and improved for better service to Jesus and used only in His service to advance His work, help and uplift others, and make returns to Him. Each steward remains under rule and pledge to God alone, must preserve individuality, must not make flesh his arm or surrender conscience and stewardship to human control by oppressive contracts or confederacies, but must work in kindly fellowship without forcing another conscience, learning through persevering seeking, whole surrender, willingness to be and do anything for Christ even in humblest unwelcome place, with fervent spirit, watchfulness unto prayer, love of the Bible as hidden treasure, and an atmosphere that is a savor of life as a branch of the Living Vine. The final judgment turns on such practical benevolence counted as done to Christ, and God who sees the end from the beginning will call each to personal account expecting return proportionate to what was entrusted.

God lends goods to large and small vessels and gives to every person work according to known ability, for He is infinite in wisdom and knows perfectly how to test and apportion trusts according to known powers, capacities and power to use them. To every one is given trust to improve, and faithful diligent honest labor cooperating with Him rather than trusting self, recognizing His compassion and walking humbly without complaining about brethren or inequality of facilities, opens ways, increases intellect, gains more talents and doubles them, with corresponding returns expected and diligent service rewarded. There is diversity of gifts with never equality in distribution or returns, yet He has right to best and holiest service, and doing best with one or two or five is accepted and approved, for commendation is by faithfulness in improving the trust not number returned. The talents so given are reasoning faculties and brighter clearer light now given, including divine rays left by patriarchs, prophets and apostles as hereditary trusts, with educational opportunities and brainpower to be developed to the fullest, used to seek truth as hidden treasure, to serve God and communicate to others, and to let light shine in clear steady rays to make Christ known, every believer standing as a lighthouse to warn souls lest they make shipwreck of faith. Capacity increases by such use and obligation to arise and shine is greater now because light is more clear and definite, while hiding is living a godless Christless worldly life with name on church books, believing about Christ without believing in Him, and even the humblest talent devoted to God advances His kingdom and honors Him.

Forms of Hiding Talent

To hide the talent in the earth is to bury God-given abilities, means and influence in worldly enterprises, investments, property, business and money-making, taking satisfaction in accumulating worldly goods without turning them to account for Him who bestowed them, though the trust is more than earthly employment and involves eternal interests and entire obedience bought by blood. Hiding includes investing money, time, thought and labor in secret societies and in ways that cannot honor God or benefit others, in risky investments instead of winning souls, and in enriched farms and building added to building instead of letting power, influence and means flow in the missionary channel, while holding surplus in America instead of establishing foreign fields where the standard is not uplifted misappropriates the world vineyard. Hiding includes tying up means in buildings, banks, houses and lands, hoarding, keeping idle, spending on self and family or on needless things, instead of putting it freely into circulation to advance the cause, relieve the destitute, support meetinghouses, sanitariums, schools and missions, and to present principal with interest.

Hiding means holding means back from present use and leaving work for children after death, deferring giving until death, willing to unbelieving or wealthy or reckless children who will squander, hoard or worship it, or letting it pass by loose wills into the enemy's ranks, from secret motive to avoid giving while loving in word but not in deed. Hiding includes withholding tithes, gifts and offerings meant to advance the work and support preachers, missions and schools, spending the Lord's money on appetite, tea and coffee, dress and ornaments instead of self-denial, with unfaithfulness in tithe hiding the talent while faithful return brings reward and banishes avarice and dishonesty. Hiding includes withholding means in emergency with miser's grasp, making selfish interest first, letting covetousness and acquisitiveness become idolatry, and treating possessions as one's own to do as one pleases so no souls are saved, which robs God and brings the same retribution at strict account.

Burying happens by reckless influence and accountability, by cheap trifling conversation that molds associates downward to what is low and ignoble and strengthens evil, by neglecting to speak a word in season and refusing helpful words, and by misusing speech and influence instead of drawing people to Christ and trading with unwearied diligence. For ministers burying includes holding influence and money dormant instead of improving them, not advancing the REVIEW as opportunity to speak to thousands, not reporting meetings for encouragement, spending hours in idle visiting and talk about unimportant matters, passing prayerless days with nothing to show, letting speaking opportunities pass unseen, and spending large expense for little result. Burying includes spending time and means on self-gratification, display, worldly dress and ornaments, appetite, tea and coffee, amusements, luxury and pride while fellow beings are left in ignorance, tying means in houses and lands, yielding to family demands, shutting the heart to the poor, and letting business cares absorb interest due to God.

Hiding is living for self, seeking own happiness, shunning work and responsibility, being content with formal duties while religion is divorced from business, perverting gifts and investing in worldly business instead of watching for opportunities, enquiring of God, warning men, relieving missions and debts, and trading to double the one talent under supervision. Hiding is seeking merely to save one's own soul while indifferent to sinners, professing love while feeling no interest for them and remaining indifferent to their condition and destiny, which cannot long retain God's favor nor secure one's own salvation and star-gemmed crown, and must be confessed and repaired by personal visiting, praying and presenting truth. Hiding includes failing to labor for souls, failing to do nearest humble work, house-to-house labor, selling books, raising workers, using tactful methods to reach all classes, sustaining hard fields, and opposing or blocking others' good work instead of entering neglected fields.

Burying includes hiding light and truth under a bushel instead of on a candlestick, failing to proclaim the Sabbath and third angel's message while millions perish in delusion before a false sabbath, failing to warn, failing to let light shine in good works and deportment, and having truth without bringing it into the soul or going to those in vice. Hiding means shunning responsibility, choosing easier less responsible positions, remaining unconsecrated to escape mistakes instead of depending on Jesus for wisdom and Spirit, staying silent shut up with self instead of publishing to hundreds through the paper, and letting duty be ruled by feelings instead of truth and sense of important truth. Hiding includes withholding self while willing to give means, refusing burdens and responsibilities, leaving abilities unused through dependence on leading men who gather all to themselves, gathering burdens onto leaders, detaining students in study instead of giving vineyard work, and failing to train and set others to work who then are lost or serve the enemy.

Hiding includes working to glorify self and despise the poor, using talents for self-dignity instead of Christlikeness, studying how little can be done instead of how much, serving against the Giver, and using abilities to tear down rather than build up, which makes the idler a hindrance and channel of darkness. Hiding includes standing behind last-day privileges and light, failing to walk in it, failing to advance in knowledge and true holiness according to grace received, and failing to prepare probationary gifts and time for Christ's coming, since condemnation comes not from lack of knowledge but from refused light become darkness. Hiding includes failing to use speech and money for good returns, failing to carry the warning message and invest means to save souls, failing to use apostolic gifts passed from generation to generation, and failing to use goods faithfully age after age with capabilities, nerve and opportunity especially to win souls.

Hiding includes failing to use gifts in proportion to capacities, failing to cooperate to increase even one talent, failing to serve wherever one lives in whatever circumstances, and failing to use greater abilities with greater responsibility in the right spirit, since mere possession of affection, generosity and spiritual understanding increases responsibility rather than excusing wait for better opportunity. Hiding includes failing to give self wholly in humblest service under unpleasant circumstances with eye single, failing to direct means from established places to destitute fields and unworked vineyard, failing to circulate money to enlighten darkness so converts become stewards, and failing to invest to spread the gospel instead of handing control outright to one man. Hiding includes fearfully returning what belongs to the master without use and without increase, failing to do personal work for neighbors which develops grace, and failing to answer for deeds and for good that might have been done when excuses vanish and probation brief may close.

Hiding includes failing to prevent a backslidden church by saving others, failing to serve beyond personal benefit, failing to impart light by deportment, and failing to spread light so the church shines instead of withering, though every believer not only ministers must improve grace received to return gain. Hiding includes seeking thanks, dishonoring God, embezzling where most needed by diverting the Lord's money, revealing unchristlike character, misusing trust under test, and neglecting soul-winning light and influence, while life itself as Christ-bought trust must be doubled to reveal God's character. Hiding includes refusing immediate obedience to go to distant fields such as Europe and England, studying ease and following inclination, centering on self and demanding highest wages and own terms which hinders economical workers, instead of giving all capabilities with self-denial for future reward according to work.

Hiding includes leaving work incomplete amid present not future last-day perils through fear, lack of faith, negligence or discouragement, failing to use resources to advance truth, failing to use gifts wisely for glory and greatest good, and failing to develop abilities through use in church and beyond. Hiding includes possessing gifts without diligent exercise, failing to show use by works by which one will be judged though justified by faith, and failing to relieve disease and suffering with even one talent wisely increased in whatever situation. Hiding includes failing to appreciate God and cooperate for increase, failing to share and return what was entrusted, failing to use means to make saved souls into stewards of truth, and failing to use reason, education and ability lifelong in home missions and blessing others.

Hiding includes keeping money for selfish worldly investment instead of warning others, trading income from brain work and writings under institutional control that absorbs talents, failing to use great light while souls perish, and failing to expand generously to restore God's image, which gives Satan victory through covetous idolatry. Hiding includes failing to put gifts to best use for glory, failing to advance truth during life for which each is rewarded according to works, failing to use mind and body with greater accountability where greater given, and failing to serve neighbors in any circumstance without complaint of small gifts. Hiding includes failing to keep voice in use at low cost for destitute fields, withholding grace given for others instead of improving it, investing in worldly enterprises instead of soul-winning, and frivolous worldliness inconsistent with profession, loving money and self while judged by present light.

Hiding includes wasting children's money without glorifying God, expecting human display, spending on self while the poor, widow and fatherless suffer without heavenly insurance or mansion, and withholding the Lord's money from greatest need where it should be traded in active circulation. Hiding includes neglecting life as a Christ-bought trust to be improved and doubled, idly neglecting soul-winning influence to be faced at judgment, neglecting student improvement after Daniel's example, and failing to move in faith amid perils to complete the work by grace lest the day overtake as thief. Hiding includes burying ability in business cares and transactions instead of family and missionary work and imparting precious light by example, burying intellect, reason and money in business that perils the soul and gives Satan advantage, and burying capabilities in worldly pursuits instead of soul-winning with angelic cooperation.

Hiding includes letting talents rust from inaction despite opportunities and experience, wasting time without sharing light in idleness which is sin answerable to God, neglecting personal work that develops grace, and failing to grow in grace and knowledge, though even small children may speak for Jesus. Hiding includes keeping given light to self beneath privileges without advancement, living a godless worldly life with name on books believing about Christ without believing in Him, and receiving great light yet keeping it within so it benefits no one, while imparting increases wisdom and strength. Hiding includes giving strength of purpose, planning, tact and skill to temporal things while bringing feeble diseased service to God's work, making the eternal secondary, confusing duty by love of earthly treasure, and centering means on self for luxuries and appetite instead of redeeming neglect with zeal.

Hiding includes neglecting home training of children in discipline, Scriptures, order, thoroughness, domestic duties and labor, doing surface work, failing to combine practical and literary training and to sow truth early tenderly, and neglecting spouse and children which unfits for greater riches and robs them of blessing. Hiding includes a physician failing to point the sick to the Savior for peace and forgiveness, neglecting timely words and golden privilege as minister of righteousness, neglecting camp-meetings and health reform instruction with bright rays, and keeping Christ's religion concealed instead of bringing living faith to sufferers to reproduce a thousandfold. Hiding includes misapplying the Lord's money to selfish purposes by indolent exaltation caring for own honor, diverting it where most needed, withholding from the poor to accumulate for self as receiver not producer, and using goods without profit to spread harmful ideas and oppose progress.

Hiding includes holding God's money, power, workers, facilities and experience in one place instead of dividing to needy fields such as England, London and Europe, crowding in cities content to receive without giving Bread of life, and confining labor where churches are glutted instead of broadening to suburbs and unworked places. Hiding includes letting the world occupy the soul to gather earthly wealth with no attraction in eternal riches and no room for Jesus, thinking only of temporal self-interest regardless of God, serving the creature rather than Creator, and willingly letting powers stagnate refusing responsibility instead of rising like Daniel and Joseph to please God. Hiding includes failing to use parental ability to rule households aright with mind, soul and strength controlled by the Spirit, failing to train abilities for gospel bearing without weakening them by harmful habits, and undermining a husband's vigor by refusing responsibilities instead of helping his work.

Hiding includes burying power of influence by evil-speaking, suspicion and distrust, retaining childish pettish speech, wasting words instead of comforting, and failing to use words only for glory and benefit with converted tongue and treasure house full of truth. Hiding includes storing instruction without imparting so the mind clogs as mental dyspeptic, being ever learning without knowledge while waiting for more help and nursing instead of trading at once, and detaining students in study instead of giving them vineyard work where diffusing light brings increased light and victorious prayer.

Accountability Judgment and Reward

Each person is accountable for using what was entrusted and cannot transfer that duty to another man, council, conference, institution or publishing house, but must trade personally on what was given and answer individually without merging individuality. A talent is any gift or endowment, natural or spiritual, original or acquired, including the ability to write a book, influence, ability, thought and mental power, and no one is accountable for talents never received and none should complain of small gifts, for one talent well used will gain others and the worker with a few pence serving with his pence is judged as faithful as the one who improved five talents. The talent must not be treated with indifference, buried, sold, or surrendered to another to control and invest, and no man or council may make as little as possible of another's talents, weigh them in human balances, merge another's individuality, become his steward, buy another's talent or its product to rule it, or take another's work out of God's hands. Fear of criticism or possible loss does not excuse hiding, and caution misused to encourage indolence or cowardice must give way to laying aside no individual responsibility but doing the best service possible where one can. When one mind is ruled by another the agent is separated from God and exposed to temptation, becoming slaves of men with confusion, distrust, jealousy, evil surmising, loss of faith, guilt, selfishness and hypocrisy, while selling stewardship as if incapable of managing God's goods incurs great and dangerous responsibility, hinders character development, and efforts to take all profits beyond a mere pittance are unjust, unequal, narrow, conceited and not heaven-inspired.

No plan may place mind or talent under human judgment or control, weigh gifts in human balances, absorb and control productions and income, or treat persons as machines, for value before God is decided not by number of talents but by appreciation and employment. The ability to write and its income, thought, brain work and writings are to be invested under God's direction, administered by the possessor to meet needs of the work, with each soul preserving individuality, understanding for himself God's will, settling best use, and returning increase as one responsible in every relation of life. To control productions, take a large share of income on the plea that powers of soul, body and spirit belong to the paying institution, and make it hard and oppressive for refusers, is unfair, unjust and on wrong lines, and overbearing mastery that prevents putting gifts into service or gives no room to think, plan and use talents is cruelty answerable to God. People are not to be judged faithless merely because unfitted for a particular task, being talented is not limited to a favored class looking down on others as deficient, the smallest gift is not to be ignored or despised, and each is to use own intellect and seek wisdom from God rather than merely adopting another's ideas because of position.

A reckoning is coming when talents used or abused must be accounted for, with the Master coming to investigate conduct and inquire what use was made of talents lent, sifting purposes and motives. Mind and muscles must be taxed to develop properly, and being careless with time, studying how to kill time, thinking and planning for self, seeking own happiness, shunning work and personal responsibility, and neglecting duties God wants done is hiding the talent. All good left undone will be charged against the doer, those shunning work must render account for good they might have done and did not do like fruitless trees in the vineyard, neglect convicts, and the slothful servant who wastes the Master's goods through idleness even without enriching himself loses heaven and is unfit for the kingdom unless he follows Christ in watch, prayer and work. Human beings are not their own but absolutely God's by creation and redemption, free moral agents with liberty to abuse or improve, whether believer or unbeliever as purchased property, and burying means refusing trust, withholding all influence for good and all improvement for truth, serving Satan instead of God after resisting Christ crucified and the Spirit drawing from the cross, leaving the impenitent weighed and found wanting with no excuse.

At judgment each life's work is examined and reward is given in exact proportion to fidelity, perseverance, earnest effort and work done, rather than amount given, with faithful persevering trading returning principal with interest bearing the test. Rewards are not earned merits purchasing salvation but are granted by Christ, yet each receives according to improvement made, faithful service may receive greater responsibility, and each may strive for the highest reward. To bury the talent is to fail to trade with the Lord's goods through love of gain as ruling passion, becoming a slave to this world, putting selfish interests first, setting a bad example while professing heavenly citizenship yet living as a dweller on earth, with profession without corresponding works. Those of little use are rewarded according to works while faithful service persisting through difficulty wins eternal glory, and the examination reveals good that could have been done and eternal loss caused by withholding.

People are responsible not only for what they did but for what they received and could have gained, including souls that might have been saved, and neglecting opportunities to do good is culpable even apart from conspicuous sins. Returning what belonged to the master unused does not excuse failure to act, for the unused talent is still accounted for and inaction can destroy confidence in God. The buried talent represents abilities and opportunities left unused by those serving own interests, withholding means and self from God's work, refusing work they had ability and opportunity to do, caring only for own salvation while feeling no concern for neighbors, thereby throwing away opportunity to receive a star-gemmed crown and neglecting effort needed for own salvation. Unfaithfulness in plain duties of the Word, neglecting to watch and pray and make God counselor and dependence, becoming self-sufficient and walking in own imagination, or improving talents carelessly, disqualifies for the field that might have been occupied and makes one responsible for all that might have been done and was not done, for grieving the Spirit, for souls lost and all evil arising through influence conscious or unconscious, charged as a defaulter bound by law with the whole amount entrusted unless seeing, confessing, repenting toward God and believing toward Christ, warning others in danger.

Condemnation is measured by nonimprovement in proportion to grace, great light, superior privileges and opportunities given, especially as ambassadors in the last days with solemn truths to proclaim, with responsibilities differing by ability and opportunity so those given more carry greater responsibility and face greater condemnation if unfaithful. Hiding is standing far behind opportunities and failing to walk in the light, and judgment falls by the Word and especially by the law according to delinquency in improving what was given, God looking upon the heart. Hiding and not improving brings condemnation and darkness, and the more valuable the gifts the greater the condemnation for misusing them or employing them in Satan's service.

All who profess Christ are accountable according to grace and truth given and truth reaching the understanding, and His requirements are just and right and must be fully met by walking in shining light on elevated ground prepared by truth in union with Christ in character and works. Condemnation comes not from lack of knowledge and understanding but from truth reaching the understanding and light illuminating the soul; if turned away from and refused it becomes darkness in proportion to light received and will judge, condemn and banish from the Lord's presence at the last day, while light never had will never be darkness. Those given great light and unfolded sacred truth must advance in knowledge and true holiness according to what was bestowed, growing rather than failing to respond, using truth and abilities to persuade others, do good works, sow seeds bearing fruit unto righteousness, and not wasting them in quarrels and division, with punishment for misusing or failing to pass on proportionate to light ignored.

The parable means youth are not at liberty to do as they please, for lives belong to God by infinite price and every child, youth, young man and young woman has a measure of power in entrusted talents to make the most of by guarding strictly, trading to gain others, placing proper estimate on responsibility, gathering every ray of divine light to shine on others' pathway, because no one lives to self. Greater endowment brings heavier responsibility, and feeling that responsibility should hold back from dissipation and from using cheap, worm-eaten timbers in character-building that dishonors the Redeemer. Mental abilities left undeveloped when educators fail to recognize and encourage them illustrate buried talent, so teachers should draw out and strengthen them for God's glory, consecrating youthful gifts to His work rather than leaving them unused.

God alone can judge capabilities of servants and time and talents employed, and faithfulness decides outcome so one entrusted with few talents working faithfully as unto God receives just as large a reward as one entrusted with many, while human judgments about who accomplished most good often mistake bustle and show for worth. God lends goods to large and small vessels and is now proving every man's fidelity by revenue brought from few or many, scrutinizing returns from every talent when making up jewels and rewarding each according to what was done, speaking approval only to the good and faithful. Hiding is unfaithfulness corrupting power and dishonoring God, bringing challenge and condemnation, and looking down on humble duties belongs to that unfaithfulness, whereas one talent used faithfully is of great value while many left unused or used amiss are worthless, and faithful performance of small humble appointed duties nearest at hand fits for larger responsibilities. No one can rightly measure own gifts or another's, for God alone knows how important each gift is, and each is responsible to learn to communicate and use what was given, presenting Christ in character through the Spirit in humble work as unto God.

The decisive distinction at the last judgment is obedience versus disobedience, with those doing good sharing the resurrection of life while those doing evil are judged according to works. God has given every person talents in trust and every person work, from lowliest and most obscure to highest positions, proportioned to varied capabilities, so there can be no idlers and none excused. Talents are not one's own but the Master's entrusted capital, including light of truth and all spiritual advantages, to be used to God's glory to become more qualified to trade and accumulate by trading and return corresponding increase with usury, while hiding trifles with time, privileges and opportunities and fails to improve character and ability to make a complete worker, bringing loss of soul and eternal life in final account when the Chief Shepherd as Judge reckons on the principle that servants are justified by faith and judged by works, for faith works by love and purifies from moral defilement to become a temple for the Lord. Those welcomed into the Holy City are good and faithful acting as Christ would, judged by God's standard of justice and equity, with entrusted goods giving no license for injustice toward others.

Present choices are recorded in heaven's ledger, withholding is robbery recorded against the name even when enrolled on the church book, and when judgment sits and books are opened every person is rewarded according to works. Being rich in good works by disinterested benevolence using what is entrusted secures future immortal life, but unless robbers of God repent and work for the Master they will certainly share the doom of the unfaithful steward. Burying casts away the crown of life, and failing to cooperate and use mind, sight, hearing, strength, thought and effort in service can lead to losing the soul and being judged unfit, with unused talents able to bring eternal loss. The unfaithful are charged as defaulters with souls lost through influence, losing crown and soul.

There is no later opportunity or second probation to make up for neglect, for today is trust followed by reckoning, so liberality and labor must seize present golden moments and work with all might as if fearful of losing favorable opportunity. To defer liberality until death and shift stewardship upon others is utter folly and great risk, surrendering property to death rather than to God contrary to His plain plan, since those entrusted afterward may not do as well. The fear-excuse is fatal delusion leaving the servant without excuse, proving character, for one burying one talent would have buried ten, yet the warning does not mean opportunity to return is gone, for redemption and the Spirit's work leave room to respond and put talents to use. Time, talents, influence, property, money, strength and capabilities are not one's own but lent belonging to the Lord for truth and righteousness, not to be absorbed in worldly business perilous to the soul, but to be used wisely so they accumulate, with day-by-day and hour-by-hour use deciding destiny and final reward depending on piety, earnestness and unselfishness, a life rightly used enduring as eternity and receiving increase at His coming while work must be done while it is day.

God tests people through temporal possessions to reveal fitness for eternal riches, entrusting means and talents to prove whether they acknowledge Him in gifts and use them to advance His glory rather than exalt self or oppress the poor. The earth and all treasures, cattle, gold and silver are His, entrusted to stewards to advance His cause, and He requires return in proportion to what each received, demanding nothing beyond what was given, so even one talent must be used faithfully and leaving it unused is abuse leaving the servant accountable for improvement or neglect. Money and influence are loans not personal property to be buried or used only for self but invested for the Lord's benefit, used wisely and compassionately to save the needy, with stewardship testing allegiance and what is managed to be returned with increase. Investing for personal or earthly benefit instead of supporting truth repeats unfaithfulness, and complaint against the master is mere excuse for withholding what could advance His work.

Means are a trust not to be prized above God, and each must ask what he has of the Lord's and how to use it to His glory, commanded to occupy till He comes by using today's gracious opportunity to invest for salvation, advance the cause, and relieve widow and fatherless, because tomorrow probation may end and the account be forever fixed. Abusing the lent blessing for extravagance, vain show, ambition and profligate selfishness under apologies of pride and position brings a terrible curse, while faithful unselfish use glorifies God, makes the soul like a watered garden, gathers rich blessings and gratitude, and brings inexpressible joy at reaping in gathered sheaves as recompense of fidelity. Spending His money on self-indulgence, pride, appetite and needless things while poor, widow, fatherless suffer hunger, overwork, sickness and distress, and while worship facilities and necessities of the cause lack means, is embezzling His goods, watched by God who apportions reward in the great day, with probation given to work out perfect character by obedience, lay treasure in heaven not earth, and secure eternal riches. Prosperity tests thankfulness requiring daily consecration lest talents turn to wrong channels harming holder and souls Christ died for, while houses, lands and large revenue are goods lent in probation to form character for mansions prepared, to be used wisely with converting power without exalting self for possessing property.

Obligation is measured by gift loaned, demanding nothing beyond what was given, yet greater endowment and clearer understanding require greater returns, with every talent small or great, learning, money, time and opportunity, even lowliest talent and humblest service, to be exercised as consecrated gift on God's altar for Master's service and glory. God does not demand from unlearned, poor or sick what disadvantages or infirmities prevent, measures responsibility by ability and circumstance, and holds each responsible for what was given not for gifts never possessed, so none with few talents should repine over limited ability or humble position but work diligently. Faithful service in small duties brings greater responsibilities and everlasting life as wise stewards, even smallest trust growing through diligent service with blessing, and purity of motive and humble self-denying service are valued with far-reaching influence as much as greater work, without looking down on those with less. The question is not what is owned but what is done with what is entrusted, for all beyond sustenance is stewardship of grace, and the Owner will demand use and require interest according to entrusted capital and measure of gift, so hiding in selfish use, extravagance, misuse, misapplication and robbery depends on making most of present opportunities rather than leaving idle.

Christ's reckoning will not ask how successful servants were in gathering money but what they did with talents given: what they did for Him in the poor, afflicted, orphan, fatherless, sick, hungry and naked, how they employed lent time, how they used pen, voice, money and influence, and what they did with light and knowledge of truths heralding His second coming to make people wise unto salvation, requiring careful thought and highest use of intellect. Use of money and gifts of mind and body will be examined at His coming, including whether they were put to work for growth of the kingdom, with money kept idle or spent needlessly instead of wisely used robbing the treasury, and full consequences of faithful giving known at judgment when each is rewarded according to works. Each ability is used either in God's service or against the Giver, and the reckoning will reveal which side was served.

Stewardship requires keeping a voice in disposition of means, not handing over outright large gifts to one man to dispose of by his own judgment nor leaving it idle while one line is advanced to neglect of other equally essential lines. Faithfulness requires seeking the Lord where to place it, loaning or investing it in the cause at low interest so it keeps working and remains available for future gifts, using wise managers to help place it from church to church, and directing means from places with established institutions and full facilities to destitute fields and unworked parts of the vineyard with no memorials. To give away all power over the talent despises individual stewardship, and donations are blessed only when the giver considers how the Lord's talent is used.

Faithful Use and Increase

The single talent was assigned according to ability rather than by caprice, so its holder had no reason to complain about lacking larger gifts or to covet work beyond his measure. Even one talent, when put to work for God in cooperation with Christ for souls, can accomplish much and by careful use may be doubled, and God requires a return only in proportion to what each has received. Faithfulness in a small trust is honored equally with faithfulness in a great one, for faithful use of little brings the same return as faithful use of much. This includes the talent of speaking helpful, uplifting words to bless others, whose neglect brings great loss.

If the one-talent holder improves what he has to the utmost, he will be given others, so talents continually increase, and work done in proportion to ability will be as surely rewarded as the gaining of more, with reward measured by effort rather than number. Faithful use of even the smallest talent prepares its possessor for a greater trust, and wise faithful use may gain another talent as shared light multiplies. Doing small work well prepares for greater responsibility, and faithful work according to ability can increase what was entrusted. Such increase comes only by exercise, for consecrated mental, spiritual and physical powers grow as they are used in practical service such as speaking, praying, singing and testifying, until even mites rightly traded gain pounds and believers grow to full stature in Christ.

Use enlarges and strengthens gifts while gifts left unused dwindle, are lost and are taken away, for by constant practice and exercise power to do good is strengthened and increased. Diligent service, sacrifice and obedience to the Spirit awaken dormant abilities and develop new ones, and faithful use brings greater ability, efficiency and glory to God. Fear rooted in a false view of God keeps powers from venture in His service, surrendering them to the enemy by burying, and then the unused abilities eventually dwindle and are removed. To leave the talent unimproved proves slothful and unprofitable under test, disappoints the Master who gave every man his work, leaves undone the blessing of others that Christ died to make possible, and brings retributive judgment for neglect of capabilities belonging to God by creation and redemption.

Using even one talent to bring a soul to heaven can lead to others being brought to the Master, like widening circles from a pebble thrown into water. When influence and means are used to bring people to truth, those people can in turn use their own gifts to help others, so entrusted talents increase and results are shown by fruits with increase returned to the Master. Those who trade by earnestly imparting knowledge of God and winning souls work with angels close beside them, and their converts in turn receive the gift and seek to save the perishing, with worker and worked-for joined heart to heart in Christian brotherhood. So a plain unlearned man who worked quietly and helped eighteen accept truth did not bury his talent, and each soul won through Christlike energy can lead to many more being saved.

In contrast to the servants who put their talents to work and gained more stands the servant who hid and failed, showing every ability however limited is to be used and developed. Even the smallest talent has an appointed work, including house-to-house ministry, and faithful use in little duties lets God multiply its influence. Every talent is a loan from the Master to be invested to advance His glory, a stewardship of grace secured by Christ's blood to claim entire obedience, and even humblest service becomes consecrated when done at His bidding. To hide it is to bury abilities in worldly enterprises and take satisfaction in accumulating without turning them to account for Him, forgetting eternal interests in the reckoning.

He would have failed no better with five or ten, for his unfaithful handling exposed the texture of his character rather than any lack of amount. His plea of fear revealed unwillingness for his lord to have use of the goods, binding up means so no benefit or doubling could come, while faithful interest would have doubled the one under God's supervision and led to larger trust for helping the work. Had he traded, the Lord would have multiplied the talent, and making best use brings greater efficiency as the Spirit continually leads onward. The same abilities devoted to worldly gain displease God, yet consecrated to His work can serve with even greater effectiveness through divine power, while misuse to turn others away will be answered for in judgment.

God is in truth a rich giver, rich provider and fountain of love, bestowing gifts according to each person's ability to use them so they can trade on His goods and lay up foundation for the time to come. To leave a gift unused or misapplied is to be only a consumer and not a provider, returning very little fruit and failing to relieve suffering humanity with His bountiful provisions. Talents are the Lord's property, not the receiver's, to be used wisely, judiciously and with integrity, increased through wise use and returned to the Giver as the duty of producers as well as consumers. Every person lowliest as well as mightiest has appointed work and endowed influence for his place, expected to do his best according to light and fullness received, and the more knowledge is used and powers exercised the more are acquired for better work as fragrant offering.

Small present duties test faithfulness, and those who do them willingly and well may be given greater responsibilities. God has the measure of each ability and knows what to lay upon each, and the one found faithful is entrusted with greater responsibility and then with still more, growing through grace to full measure in Christ. Such faithful service in duties small and great brings corresponding return, proves wise stewardship, and proves readiness to receive the true riches of everlasting life. Steady repeated faithfulness in suited duties is more valuable than one great achievement and brings heaven's recognition, while pride, superficial and slipshod work do not meet the standard.

What is not exercised degenerates, and talents not put to use are lost and given to those who will use them, for God gives them not chiefly for earthly wealth but for preparation for eternal life. Every ability is to be exercised so it increases in value with improvement returned to God, and as what is given is used God may entrust more with usefulness growing through work centered in Christ. Money kept idle in banks is a buried talent, but used to bring one person into truth it is doubled, and that person may bring others so increase continues. However small, property, money, time, strength and capabilities are lent belonging to the Lord for truth and righteousness, not to be absorbed in worldly pursuits, for even one improved by doing good may win one soul who wins others so one becomes many, and day by day use decides destiny at judgment where reward depends on piety, earnestness and unselfishness.

Talents used to do God's work are increased, as Moses became great by wholly giving himself to God and obeying commands, gaining increase that made him eloquent, patient, self-reliant and competent for the greatest work ever entrusted to mortal man. This is the effect on character whenever men give themselves with whole soul and listen to obey, in contrast to hiding or treating gifts as one's own. Daniel likewise faithfully used what was entrusted and acknowledged God as source of wisdom instead of withholding. Stewards must therefore trade on the Lord's goods, gifts, mercy and grace by relieving temporal and spiritual woe, helping the hungry, naked and imperiled under the Spirit's control, without letting ingratitude excuse withholding, since appropriating mercy to self advances no glory and gains no benediction.

Faithful exercise of faculties in good works and sowing truth develops and perfects Christian character, and Christ gives increased talents to those who wisely improved what was entrusted. The Master requires not only growth in grace but improvement shown in virtuous life and unselfish acts, which testify more powerfully than words, draw beholders to desire the same righteousness, reveal transforming power into the divine image, and honor His name with increase of divine illumination corresponding to growth in Bible truth. What is sown on earth is reaped in the world to come, and work begun here reaches consummation in higher holier life enduring through eternity. Self-denial is infinitely overbalanced by eternal glory when Christ sees redeemed saints as travail of His soul and is satisfied, and talents faithfully employed here will be used on a wider nobler plan in the future life, with complete Christlike character the only treasure taken to heaven.

Trading means beginning at once upon the very first endowment by putting goods out to the exchangers, calling attention to their value, presenting sacred truth by precept and example, seeking wisdom daily, searching Scripture diligently and working in co-partnership with God. The Master does not keep bestowing most precious goods on servants who wait without using what they have, for servants must learn to trade before they can accumulate, and in trading the Lord educates, develops executive ability, transforms character into Christ's, and makes life a living epistle through the Spirit's efficiency in felt weakness and dependence. Those who only wait for more help make no advancement nor come to knowledge of truth until they go to work with what they have, becoming channels of light to whom God gives increased light as they diffuse it. So every entrusted capability, every ray of light from the Word and grace of God, with earnest prayer mixed with ministry, is to be used to the uttermost, deciding destiny and fitness for greater gifts even eternal riches. Trading is employing whole mind, soul, heart, strength and means in full surrender to prepare and bring souls to truth, not binding means in worldly business by human wisdom which loses interest in present truth, but consecrating time, talents and goods after Christ's missionary model as those bought with blood.

Right use deposits wealth in heaven's bank and returns it with usury noted on the heavenly record, increasing beyond computation. Such faithful dispensing in mercy and compassion in proportion to trust makes friends by unrighteous mammon, secures welcome into everlasting habitations, and brings sure requital a hundredfold now and everlasting life to come. One rescued soul with name registered in the book of life pays for the labor and is worth more with God than a world, so cost and venture must not decide effort nor means be left by will till death. Those who so improve talents by educating themselves to serve intelligently and be a blessing will have heaven's gates thrown open, hear the welcome into the kingdom prepared from the foundation, enter mansions prepared, and associate with overcomers who formed perfect characters, while money held back from worn workers who can no longer labor is like money buried in the earth.

Practical Service and Urgency

The present is the time to put abilities to work, especially for salvation, for Christ commands to occupy till He comes, using today by investing to save men and relieving the widow and fatherless because probation may end tomorrow and the account be forever fixed, while church membership alone does not secure heaven and each must examine faithful use of opportunities. Every church member must be taught the parable, for each is the light of the world expected according to ability to enlighten and bless others, whether rich or poor, great or humble, and every trained mind, disciplined intellect and jot of ability is needed rather than left unused. Those who bury will be replaced by workers who use wisely what God placed in their hands, for proper use brings glory to God and perverted use robs the Giver, and withholding under the prince of darkness brings rejection when Christ will not confess the unfaithful.

Neglecting given work revealed a heart not in service, leaving undone the good the talent could have done with no increase to return, and failing to improve is unfaithfulness for which servants are accountable for what they could have done but neglected. Failing to develop brings condemnation proportionate to grace and truth given, for experience, faith, obedience, love and character should grow with light received, and the verse warns against deliberately doing as little as possible with every talent to be accounted for. Having little wealth does not remove responsibility, for the poor are as responsible as the wealthy, one talent is no excuse to let others carry the burden, and each should practice self-denial and contribute personal effort and means according to what is had rather than selfishly retaining even small means.

All blessings belong to Him with spheres assigned according to ability, and each must trade diligently conscientiously on the Lord's goods according to the Word, keeping self out of sight and Christ before the world, consecrating wealth and other goods to spread the gospel, carry the warning message and win souls rather than hindering the work. It describes professed disciples idle and slothful while souls perish out of Christ, opposite to flying in the midst of heaven proclaiming the commandments and faith, and the slothful must unearth the buried talent by earnest work putting all powers into His cause, for no idler will be inside the kingdom and sleeping churches must arise and shine. Knowledge reaching understanding brings responsibility to grow in holiness, for fault lies not in lack but unfaithful response, and refusing to improve brings eternal loss and makes sacrifice vain while faithful improvement bringing mind and soul into work leads to precious reward, future harvest and fitting for mansions.

Freewill offerings and active use show all is the Lord's, for stewards put God first with consecrated ingenuity and most skillful service, and value lies in use for good under Christ bringing clearer understanding, stronger faith and further growth. Believers are to use abilities faithfully before His coming, looking to Him for success, holding back no sacrifice, expecting divine aid, preparing as stewards putting goods to use and returning results, remembering the work belongs to the Lord not to them. Neglect makes the servant slothful because powers belong to God, and failure to trade brings loss because people work day by day for time and eternity making record in heaven, while intellectual and moral faculties left dormant or stunted fail responsibility and fear does not excuse.

Spiritual strength grows through use and light must be shared, while failing to exercise gifts leads to weakness, neglected privileges do not advance, and those of little use are rewarded according to works while faithful service through difficulty wins eternal glory. People who do no work are called to bring buried abilities into service, for burying includes neglecting, abusing or misusing, and unfaithful use doing nothing is sinful neglect and poor preparation for His return. The Lord's talents are to be multiplied, established parts helping unworked fields even by sacrifice and self-denial with means and influence, while those refusing allegiance remain accountable and ransom does not shield from judgment.

The master requires proper returns with individual accounting, for selfish absorption without returns advancing the work is unfaithful, and every person is trading on the Lord's money for His glory by sacrificing ease, entering new districts, doing house-to-house labor and selling books. Each person is responsible for improving actually entrusted abilities not wishing for another's or taking another's work, even humblest service wholly devoted is acceptable, and neglecting small responsibilities or waiting duties fails moral duty. Faithfulness means thoroughness in little things climbing step by step round after round with deep thinking and solidity, not claiming five while entrusted with two or skimming superficially with self-inflation, which forfeits commendation and rulership over many things.

The obligation rests on Christ's ownership by creation, redemption and blood, for no one is his own but bought with His life, toil and shameful death, little time remains, and God claims full unreserved surrender to return His own with increase in saving souls. Refusing opened doors makes one a do-nothing like Meroz crippling missionary enterprises, while every stone is to be a living stone emitting light through good works doing nearest humble labor and letting light shine. The timid with few talents and little confidence need not hide, for diligent trading greatly increases endowments and influence under His care, and to criticize, discourage or block such workers hinders increase and does the enemy's work needing conversion.

If truth is not imparted churches become barren and starve even while hearing preaching, for God floods hearts to be given freely to reveal Christ, and folding hands in contentment breaks stewardship while all must labor as those to give account. Those who misapply means must restore what was unjustly received, for selfish absorption may cause gifts to be taken and given to willing agencies, and no position of trust may control another's talents by overbearing mastery. The verse applies to united action including securing and supporting laborers with no farthing squandered on selfish indulgence, for last-day decisions turn on practical benevolence counted as done to Christ.

An unused capacity as in Bro. M and Saunders, who had ability to do good but did not fully give himself to Christ, is a buried talent to be answered for to the Master for stewardship. Putting learning into practice increases wisdom and knowledge, so hindering service prevents development, Jesus should be brought into all work and business, and gifts cultivated and trained strengthen the church and carry truth to others. Talents are privileges of Bible truth to be improved by going to those in vice to redeem them and invite them to the feast, while having truth without doing for others is hiding through love of ease and selfish indulgence accountable for misused talents.

God lends powers and money to be increased not used for impulse or show, and no calling or few talents releases from duty or allows idleness or underrating gifts, but each must weekly examine trading, practice economy and learn by study, prayer and consecration to cooperate daily. The rebuke condemns selfishness and requires vigilant earnest zeal and unswerving fidelity determining destiny, for time of life is a talent for strict account to increase not for gratification or fame. Talents must be improved as diligently as if all benefit were personal, put out to exchangers to save souls and carry the third angel's message to unreached places while the way is open, redeeming lost time with advance moves.

Life committed to care must be used diligently not wasted on self-pleasing or unimportant things, reward depends on earnestness, and a life not preserved in Christ is lost forever. The talent is to be used to bless others with each answering for use, for at judgment each life's work is examined and reward proportionate to efforts, and the Master expects what He entrusted put to use and increased especially to win people to Christ. The one-talent man must use it in his own sphere with his own armor doing what he can humbly, for God gives many departments, one talent can reach a class others with two or five cannot, and larger trusts must not silence, condemn or force humble workers into one channel.

Accountability governs amusement and time of youth, for any amusement where blessing can be asked in faith is not dangerous, but what disqualifies for secret prayer, devotion or prayer meeting is unsafe and dangerous. The talent lent to a minister's wife requires return with increase by earnest faithful soul-saving, willingly sacrificing personal wishes, pleasures and tastes when they conflict, and not neglected or lightly set aside. Faithfulness requires examining use, letting Christ dwell, being doers not hearers, growing in knowledge, practicing economy, and learning by study and prayer to cooperate daily with eye single and divested of selfishness.

Hiding wastes goods through idleness even without self-enrichment, for mind, sight, hearing, strength, thought and effort are all to cooperate with God to seek and save the lost, and failure brings disfavor and unfitness for the kingdom. Using talents develops people for trust and teaches how to employ them, while hindering work wastes time and leaves work undone, and delaying service for unnecessary education loses souls. Trading precious truths to win all classes requires childlike meekness learning in lowliness, wisdom from God and prayerful ingenious planning, especially for the intelligent, refined, wealthy and proud who long for rest and peace.

Goods are to be traded at once not buried waiting for help or nursing, for working with what one has makes channels of light, gives increased light, and drives to the Word and victorious wrestling prayer amid opposition and error. Hiding is carelessness and slumber instead of keeping grace trimmed and burning, neglecting watchfulness, while traded talents in self-denial and cross-bearing bring angelic aid and Christ as living water springing up to everlasting life. Safety is in daily consecration dying to self and living new life, for trading means improving in given line and faithfully doing humble duties, with none excused as unqualified but qualified by using what is had till one gains another.

Strength, time and talents belong to God not self, and every youth, man and child is a steward whose capital increases when wisely improved to glorify God and do good to perishing souls. Inaction can destroy confidence in God, and being rich in good works by disinterested benevolence secures future immortal life, while withholding is robbery recorded in heaven's ledger. Gifts are to be strengthened in temporal and religious work to help self and others onward in the way to life, for the master requires returns to persuade sinners and sow seeds bearing righteous fruit.

The master requires the whole person and all entrusted for glory, including treasures of the word and Spirit influence, and burying leaves no treasure in heaven but loss. People are accountable for every ability, parents should teach children faithful stewardship, and life, means and influence reveal the heart at reckoning expecting increase. God's gifts are not capricious but to fully use to strengthen work elsewhere and bless others, with everyone expected to impart according to ability.

Stewards handle money as sacred duty like prayer not as own, wisely for the vineyard with trust now and reckoning at return over whether truth advanced and amount doubled, buying, selling and transacting with religious obligation. Strife for supremacy is out of place because ability, wisdom and success are sacred trust to glorify God and exalt Jesus alone, not self. Talents for worldly gain displease God, but same abilities consecrated can serve with greater effectiveness through divine power, while dividing service succeeds in neither.

Physical and mental capabilities improve by judicious use with self-denial, money increases by right use but diminishes when ideas are untrained, and all genius, opportunities and privileges are lent to test usefulness to be increased and returned. Faithful use forming character decides destiny and fitness for eternal ages, for the Spirit waits to help every believing soul with Christ's presence strengthening trust and prayerfulness. Advantages and learning seldom make wise unto salvation but often make self-sufficient, idolizing blessings and withdrawing affections from God as if under no obligation to return with usury.

Labor for souls is not failure even when fruitless, for one soul is worthwhile and eternity reveals results, while refusing opportunities impairs work and using talents brings greater grace and ability. Bodily strength is capital more valuable than money, and life, health and powers must be diligently employed to support family and use time in His fear, while ease is as wrong as retaining riches and requires careful treatment of body. Burying is being content inefficient, attending trivial perishing affairs instead of laying hold by faith on infinite power through Christ to partake divine nature and sit on His throne, manifesting only the faith one has.

Responsibility includes home duties, Scripture study, helping spiritual need, and producing as well as consuming, for churches wither when members fail to serve, so all including youth must be given responsibility and put to practical use. Time and every moment are a talent for account, for wasting time squanders trust while good use in quiet work gains eternal riches, and none is worthless for all can become like Him. Talents are to be cultivated and directed not settled with little effort, for God gives opportunities to gain knowledge to help self and others, and neglect dishonors Him who purchased privilege of co-working.

Entrusted means must be put at once to present use in new fields, relieving institutions, paying debts, warning, adding souls and caring for needy, disposed while living not by will nor handed to committees nor spent on pride or buildings to make money. The verse applies to church collectively and training, for the church must answer for light, obligations grow with blessings, and overseers must train youth with weekly reports making meetings interesting instead of dull. Means must be employed to attain the end, requiring education, practice and proper sphere like Elijah and Jeremiah holding commission from God, consecrating gifts like music for good not worldliness, not accumulating unused knowledge.

Hiding intellectual powers through apathy lets them degenerate pleasing Satan, while true education under the Spirit requires vigorous exertion and practicing knowledge to lead others to service and impress character. Resources withheld when handed to undedicated children show stewardship transferred amiss, for what people have is lent by Jesus requiring wholehearted service growing in efficiency with vital connection and pure hearts. People with means for advancing work can selfishly withhold and lose privilege, God is not dependent, and giving without willing spirit mocks God who knows purposes.

What is entrusted is to be used not kept for gratification, for stewards hold money, time and opportunities in trust, are tested, and His claims make plain where to use them, including loaning to sanitariums rather than leaving destitute. A person is unfaithful when abilities are treated as own for self and family with nothing to God, God may end plans by loss or affliction, and wealth cannot ransom soul nor be carried beyond death. The verse warns against failing to recognize and employ abilities, for talents are resources to be returned and used with duties rewarded.

Hiding and not improving brings condemnation measured by light, for talents are superior privileges to be improved and the more valuable the gift the greater condemnation for misuse. Influence misused for evil can change allegiance for Christ, for spending time and ability on self instead of sharing truth buries the talent belonging to God at infinite price. Talents are for useful service, failing leaves them to Satan, and buried talent applies to abilities wasted on activities neither educating nor benefiting, as when minds absorb in amusements and ambition.

Talents given to each must be cultivated, for neglect brings loss of eternal life and makes sacrifice vain, while placing self in God's workshop beautifies and fits for mansions and the white-robed throng. Superior qualifications and wealth are lent to be increased for others' good, returning substance lays treasure by God's throne and establishes centers like New York from which truth goes forth. Idleness makes unfit for service while faithful stewardship requires diligence, for mere possession is not enough but diligent exercise is required with work examined under solemn scrutiny.

Faculties of mind and speech are to be improved to elevate and benefit others, treasured and strengthened by exercise, helping all ages by association rather than perverted to evil or faultfinding. God entrusts talents to youth to use where they are in passing truth, separating from hurtful habits, preparing to fill vacancies by moving forward trusting God with fresh experience. Failing to use what God entrusts hinders truth, for talents include money for gospel not worldly plans, and leaving fields unworked and cities unentered brings accountability.

Hiding is failure to improve, wasting powers on pleasure brings guilt, and each must improve, do nearest work, remain faithful through hardship not longing for ease or success. What is entrusted remains Lord's property, so gratifying harmful appetite like tobacco misuses what belongs to Christ, for God commits goods to relieve sufferers and ignoring this fails His claims. The talent represents gifts each must develop for practical temporal and religious work helping self and others onward in the way to life, consecrating self and warning sinners.

Various endowments are not to hide but use according to ability to bless the world and support missions as He directs, expecting multiplication by constant co-labor and compassionate wise investment. However large or small, all powers of body, mind and soul belong to Him and are best used by earnest endeavor for uplifting with eternal realities in view, growing by seeking and imparting light, peace and truth. Hiding through fear of little value buries small talent instead of trading, while faithfulness consecrates powers in practical service like speaking, praying and singing with Christ present, growing to full stature.

A steward identifies with his master acting in his stead with master's interests his own, turning gain to own advantage perverts trust, and appropriating to self gains no benediction but must relieve humanity with compassion. Believers should continually develop talents humbly not seeking prominence but serving vigilantly rather than idle or satisfied with little, watchful for opportunities. Hiding in earth means hoarding lent property spending on self instead of imparting, for hoarding is covetous idolatry periling soul while true servants lay heavenly treasure by blessing needy and establishing worship.

Everyone must carry soul-burden cooperating with heaven using tact to multiply talents by winning souls who teach others, and refusing brings slothful servant's condemnation without remaining dwarfs. God gives every man sacred trust to develop, raising yearly enlightened workers for missions, while burying through selfishness and misconception constricts work. God entrusts every person including the drunkard to honor Him, proving capability, to bury in drunkenness wastes gift, and account is required at hands of those who laid the snare and profited from ruin.

Talents are powers and blood-bought privileges to consecrate, and when youth have favor, weakness unites to might, ignorance to wisdom, giving power to overcome and reach hearts as princes with God. Those with years should use abilities to highest degree, for using influence to conform to world violates responsibility, and a talent is meant for good not spending wealth without labor. Every human is entrusted to use in curing sickness of civilization, only Christ's love enabling right appreciation, so schools must teach atonement as central.

Taking Christ's yoke in meekness leads to returning talents through acceptable service and faithful use. Those knowing truth unsanctified are unprepared, for there is trust and reckoning, and everyone receiving talents must bless others by sharing truth with those in error. Talents already possessed should be cultivated with cooperation to preserve institutions and returned with increase through active service.

Neglecting gifts to work for souls wastes talents, as long Christless speeches leave needy without care, and when leaders give no part, abilities are lost and may serve the enemy. The verse shows danger of failing to use what God entrusts, requiring workers to use all capabilities, work diligently, set example and answer for service, for the single talent is needed and has place. The verse shows the unfaithful hiding instead of using, warning money and abilities must not be wasted on self but managed carefully to advance truth and returned with increase growing in efficiency.

Entrusted means are to be invested in winning souls not selfish pleasure, faithful use laying eternal treasure and bringing commendation and joy of the Lord with hundredfold and sure bank. Money is a talent to test whether stewards render back when called, not hoard or trust to strangers while cause needs it, and murmuring at outlay risks being found wanting. Money is God's loan especially for medical missionary relief laying heavenly treasure, while selfish gratification hides it, and reckoning is near when every steward must give account.

Entrusted property must be managed faithfully and returned when required, for shifting control can leave unable to fulfill, and means belong to God for willing giving not selfish shifting. Abilities should be cultivated fullest, mind trained to carry truth and establish churches, and feeling undervalued does not excuse refusing work. Different gifts are given so people need one another and cooperate for glory not selfish rivalry without rigid method, and gifts in differing measure suit different work with room to think and act.

Fear that uneducated believers will do evil restrains labor leaving talents unused and robbing God, whereas every believing soul should be set to work to win souls uniting forces. Time and opportunity including probation are to be improved with temperance for salvation and others' good, wasting minutes in indolence is sin, and even those with competency must labor and educate children to highest efficiency. Talents multiply only by constant use in unselfish charity to needy and struggling churches as prospered, and institutional leaders must not push others out but help them gain standing.

Hiding willingly lets powers stagnate refusing responsibility, and faithfulness requires rising above do-little attitude like Daniel and Joseph living to please God mastering difficulties. Lent talents are peculiar blessings of which more requires more returned, improved by working the world-vineyard learning better ways in purity showing His law perfect converting the whole man. Every faculty including affections, thoughts and speech belongs to God who keeps machinery in motion, to be kept pure, improved and returned with increase by beholding Jesus without strife or pride.

Using the talent means continuing faithfully in small blessed employment letting it grow rather than seeking hardest work, cooperating with Christ fitting workers better with angels before and teaching others in pioneer work. The talent must not be hidden but laid at Christ's feet with Him enthroned, openly displaying true colors valuing God's favor above princes as Joseph and Daniel did refusing earthly mandates. Burying means remaining worldly producing no perfect fruit mistaking form for power, and talents must be used now in short time to reach common minds while souls perish rather than answering opponents.

Hiding or wasting in desultory efforts is wrong since they belong to God, they must be used earnestly to uplift, educate and sanctify, with faithful use rewarded at harvest securing eternal happiness. Through Christ grace enables fruitful life, God expects return for infinite sacrifice overseeing service and requiring full development of abilities. Talents of ability and means require overcoming lethargy for advancement of the school, improving gifts at every stage in earnest work to His glory.

Talents belong to God for service, and unfaithfulness in small temporal matters shows unfitness for greater. God's people must remain watchful using gifts without slackening, putting light to work so one won saves others with multiplied returns, with obedience growing confidence. Responsibility is proportionate to what can be carried wholeheartedly, each must serve in assigned sphere producing return, and none must let another lead away from God.

God gives every person work including judgment to improve which increases capability, depending on leading minds surrenders trust, for no office gives virtues and no one mind can plan for all. Entrusted resources are to be used productively, as money can support missions while helping giver earn livelihood and share light, in contrast to hiding. Talents should be put to work for Jesus blessing others rather than buried, with accountability to return in service, and communicating truth brings heavenly rejoicing.

The talent remains God's testing allegiance, to be used cooperating to save perishing and returned improved, and talents lent must be improved and returned with Spirit guiding mind lest used against His work. The talent represents abilities and opportunities whose faithful use could bring others into the kingdom, capabilities must be put to work, and very little being defective service must be corrected. People are responsible in proportion to use in zealous self-denying soul-saving rather than self-pleasing, or be found unfaithful under judgment.

What God entrusts must be put to use not kept through fear, for money belongs to God with answerability including supporting unreached fields and advancing righteousness. Hiding from fear instead of increasing is every hour of inattention wasting opportunities and keeping back part of price robbing God, with loss running through eternity as each receives according to works and crown lessened. Burying in napkin means holding surplus in America instead of foreign fields where standard not uplifted, and holding for future American need misappropriates the world vineyard.

Talents to be put to usury by displaying heaven's goods to win all classes, most wanted talent sets church at work, while hiding loves preaching yet neglects personal labor and practical teaching. Days and years are probation belonging to God for salvation and kingdom, lukewarmness is unsafe, endowments must multiply, and powers increase by exercise with growth proving life. Hiding represents complaining about unfair dealings while doing no work bearing no fruit increasing selfishness, putting hope in preacher because not taught to work and tended like sick children.

Abilities hidden when not serving and resources buried when diverted from gospel must be faithfully used to save souls, each convert bringing others so treasure increases and kingdom established. Burying is hiding capital where unimproved, since God's property this robs Him, retards work, burdens others, and covers darkness with criticism refusing to work unless benefited. Life, health and reasoning are gifts to improve faithfully even in small duties preparing for greater, heaven keeps record and each will answer.

The fearful servant hid the Lord's means to be put to best use, for talent is not to bury through fear or neglect but to use and improve with accountability, continually worked with perseverance from start. Men in high responsibility are guilty when not daily improving talents humbly following pattern to double them, failing by ambition, gain and tolerating oppression while ignoring warnings. The Lord's goods during absence are to be put to work not left idle with gifts refined rather than worldly habits, applying to steward's money supporting His cause.

Idleness in hiding is itself sin, unused talent has no value, and talents including genius must be continually worked with perseverance from start. Talents may be improved variously, as by writing to lead to truth or faithfully distributing property as prospered to take part in work. Those unwilling to develop abilities should not be accepted as sanitarium workers, for the Master gives work for saving others not self, every talent to employ in soul-saving with refusal opposing Christ.

Large means are lent to trade not accumulate for power, regarding brotherhood to turn from sin, and buying to force prices and robbing poor makes hoarder Satan's partner. Withholding goods to favor children buries God's property bringing no blessing, making poor and injuring children by amusements and appetite destroying spirituality. The verse applies to those seeing faults in institutions yet refusing burdens to set right, and failing to testify in social meeting hides talent forfeiting experience.

Money is to be used uttermost in economy so talents accumulate through souls, including paying to open meeting places and publishing discourses. Using abilities includes watching unto prayer serving as able, imparting brings increase while unused knowledge fails, and God increases talents as used in faithful positions of trust. Talents must represent Christ uninfluenced with self hid, success depending on humble dependence awarded to faith and labor not chance.

Talents are to bless others especially helping poor develop self-support, the best use of education, and wisely improving benefits influence building moral strength to be light in darkness. The Lord works with those giving best even when small, dividing service between God and world succeeds in neither, and ability to think grows only by steady exercise bearing responsibility adding little by little.

Entrusted means, intellect and abilities must be wisely invested to advance kingdom, help poor, save souls and establish work, not spent on pleasure or withheld for self. The talent is capital to invest where tenfold good produces fruit with whole world in view, while misuse draws means into inventions producing nothing and robbing other fields requiring settlement. Hiding wastes life leaving abilities untrained instead of required service, where life is Lord's capital not to spend on nothingness requiring account for misappropriation.

The talent is God's money for truth not to bury in worldly enterprises but spread worldwide, and life's duties call for wise timely steady work not delay or unfinished undertakings. A talent gained through experience is needed and should be valued, not despising its holder, for God gives each talents to use, and Edson misapplied his illustrating danger and loss of experience. God gives talents to trade not bury, the faithful earning not to hoard but circulate living sermon principles renouncing deceit, taking Christ's yoke giving healthful experience as part of heavenly firm.

The Lord's money is sacred trust to put to work for advancement rather than hid as servant hid master's instead of working it. Failure in business diligence and caretaking is unfaithfulness, and one with tact neglecting steady care is classed unfaithful causing work to suffer. Burying means a wealthy man withholding money unused instead of saving souls discouraging others, and means must not be wasted aimlessly but used earnestly.

Using means to support work and prepare missionaries exercises talent rather than leaving unused, while men without faith fail to improve to best ability and looking to Jesus makes model men. A talent is for highest service, receivers must not take credit since results depend on blessing, using humbly without overuse weakening. God entrusts expecting skillful use establishing work rather than hiding, aiming durable service not display, and talent is ability to every man for helpful service especially families needing help.

The verse teaches stewardship of the Lord's money requiring careful management attending small expenses as well as large.

Hiding what God gives dishonors Him and is backsliding after love, shown in no longer speaking for Christ, talking worldly, grieving the Spirit and wasting opportunities for truth. Talents for special service not low self-serving place, money inheritance not qualifying, and hiding is failing to grow remedied by repentance, restitution, armor and redeeming time becoming a person of opportunity. Christ gives influence to be sanctified and employed in church as blessing, and leaving unused while cold and tempted to give up truth withholds required service.

Every talent must now be brought into service with no time to lose working while day lasts because night comes, preparing for near coming with lamp burning, and hiding fails to multiply under converting power. Abilities are to advance kingdom, choosing self-rule sets aside rightful King failing stewardship. Money and influence lent to parents, guardians and youth must not be spent on display and amusement opening temptation, but to scatter blessings, shield fatherless, help needy and education, economizing for soon coming.

Those with property are stewards whose means not owned to return when called, faithful willing use brings commendation, and Lord's goods are for diligent increase including helping distress.

Ability, tact and education are lent with greater responsibility where great light given, they must be sanctified wholly to His glory, for wrong use aids Satan and brings weakness and inefficiency.
