Matthew 25:30

And cast ye the unprofitable servant into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

The verse closes the parable of the talents about the kingdom of heaven, where Christ as master entrusts his own goods to his professed servants according to ability and after a long time returns to reckon exactly with each for increase. It pronounces the sentence on the servant who brings no increase, that as unprofitable he is rejected, condemned and cast into outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth, meaning sorrow and anguish in exclusion from Christ's presence and kingdom and loss of eternal life, in contrast to the joy of the faithful. The talents are the Lord's loan secured by His blood and belonging to Him by creation and redemption, comprising life, time, health, mind, influence, light, opportunities, means and every capability, given personally to every reasoning person in differing measure with only proportionate improvement required. Burying the talent is not great vileness but neglect and omission from distrust, fear, sloth and selfishness, hiding or using for self what was to be traded, keeping instead of improving, and failing to do the good that could have been done. What is faithfully traded in unselfish service for God and the saving of souls multiplies by His working with the worker and is rewarded according to fidelity, while what is left unused is lost and taken away, and each is judged by works at Christ's coming with no second probation.

Parable Setting and Context

The verse closes the parable of the talents given shortly before entering Gethsemane, whose burden is solemn, unselfish, vigilant labor with the master's goods in readiness for Christ's return rather than idle waiting and watching. Watching means diligent service and improving what is entrusted as life-work for the good of others, joining service with godly character instead of quiet meditation alone or ceaseless activity without piety. Even a seemingly small gift is to be wisely used, with mind and body guarded from self-indulgence, misuse and selfish pleasure, since time spent selfishly is lost for eternity and there is no relaxation in seeking eternal life. In the parable the master represents Christ and the servants represent those professing to serve Him as His own by redemption, who must answer at judgment for how they served Him. Mere profession of faith has no value apart from love shown through works, and the precious blood that paid the ransom will not shield the ransomed from retribution if they refuse allegiance, withhold their talents, bury the Lord's goods and reproach their Maker.

The instruction in Matthew 25:14-46 is to be studied and compared with the life record, exposing boasting and self-sufficiency as fearfully dangerous and making Christ's words of no effect. Every man is called to put away self-trust, walk in humility with daily hourly commitment to the Saviour, and constantly receive and impart His grace. The verse closes a parable of the kingdom of heaven about entrusted talents in which God gives each servant work and gifts according to ability to develop, increase and use for His glory and for duty owed to the world. After a long time the Master returns to reckon, testing and proving His people; those who trade and increase are rewarded and enter joy, while the servant who buries the lord's money, leaves it unprofitable and unprepared to meet expectation is condemned, held accountable and cast into outer darkness.

Hiding the one talent instead of improving and doubling it leaves the servant without excuse, for hiding means having graciously given light about duty yet being too slothful to perform it, taking no part and imparting nothing. The slothful excuse is fear and distrust, calling God hard, severe and unjust, reaping where He has not sown and gathering where He has not strawed, being afraid to use the talent as if improvement would benefit God alone and not himself, so he returns only what was given. Faithfulness required putting the money to the exchangers, which is exchanging light and experience with others to benefit them, even gaining one soul from Satan's ranks whose own increase keeps multiplying; digging in the earth is instead consuming means or tying it in uncertain enterprises such as mining stock, a device and snare crippling soul-winning for lack of capital to be traded according to ability to win souls. For this wicked slothfulness the talent is taken and given to him which has ten talents, for unto everyone that has shall be given abundance but from him that has not shall be taken even what he has, so the unprofitable loses both increase and principal with his right to be trusted, and is thrown outside into darkness with weeping and grinding of teeth.

The parable thus urges faithful Christian service in which each cultivates entrusted gifts, invests every talent to best advantage, serves with wisdom, fidelity, consecration, unity and organized effort, and looks to the Master's reward measured not by amount entrusted but by faithfulness. Judas leaving Christ's presence to betray Him is an instance of entering that outer darkness, after resisting mercy leaving joy, the light of immortal hope and Christ's presence for evil work where hope was not.

Sentence of Outer Darkness

The sentence falls on the servant who fails to use what was entrusted to him, and as unprofitable he is rejected, condemned, and cast into outer darkness where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth. That outer darkness is sorrow and anguish, exclusion from Christ's kingdom and heavenly courts and presence, eternal separation from God, and loss of the crown of life and eternal bliss and eternal life. It stands in direct contrast to the reward and joy of the faithful servant who used his Lord's goods for the work of God and is welcomed into the Holy City and the prepared kingdom. His neglect grows from distrust and jealousy of God, from wickedness and sloth and excuse-making when he could have put the talent to use, and unused gifts therefore bring loss and punishment when the Lord returns to call His servants to account.

The casting out illustrates the last general judgment, when each person is dealt with according to the use made of talents and according to works. In that decisive day the righteous alone shine in God's kingdom, those who have done good sharing in the resurrection of life while those who have done evil are judged according to their works, with obedience or disobedience determining the outcome. It is the irrevocable sentence Christ Himself will speak in the day of God upon professing Christians found wanting, a fearful doom from His lips to be cast into outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth. It falls on the unprofitable servant who lives merely to please self as selfish, ease-loving and irresponsible, forgetting that Jesus pleased not Himself and that the self-denial and self-sacrifice that characterized His life must characterize theirs. It falls on those who enthrone self instead of making God's will their will in all things, who do not trade upon talents to gain others by compassion and love but use them for selfish lifting up, enrichment and honor, and though exalted on earth and seated beside princes they stand in the books of heaven weighed in the balances of the sanctuary and found wanting, unclean and unholy, having sold the birthright for selfish interest and gain.

To avert that doom requires revealing genuineness of religion by bringing the will into submission to God's will, abiding in the True Vine, bearing fruit as fruit-bearing trees, going where Jesus leads, suffering for His sake, going about doing good, seeking to save souls for whom Christ died, conquering difficulties, keeping unspotted from the world, working where the work is hardest and help is most needed rather than seeking the easiest place and lightest burdens, with responsibility proportionate to entrusted talents and zealous activity in the Master's cause. The servant who fails is assigned a place with hypocrites and unbelievers, warning that pursuing earthly interests while neglecting God's work and the needs of souls leads to that outcome. Among professing Christians the slothful servants are as chaff among wheat because they do not improve what God gave, since mere profession and pretense at cultivating soil and sowing seed without thorough doing will never gain salvation, and only those who hear and do Christ's Word and give entire service will obtain eternal life and have place in heaven. The parable thus presents two classes, the good and faithful servant and the unfaithful servant, with every name recorded in the ledger of heaven under one or the other.

Patient continuance in well doing wins the crown of life through faithfulness shown in putting away lightness, attending to prayer, showing zeal in religious things, carrying a weight of influence, living with watchfulness and prayer, constant distrust of self and firm reliance on God, living for the future immortal life after Christ's pattern, walking in light, denying self, sacrificing, and by precept and example saving souls to bring golden sheaves to Christ and at last sit with Him upon His throne when the armor is laid off because the work is well done. Pleasing and enjoying self and neglecting duty loses the eternal weight of glory, leaving the person condemned as unfaithful, meeting the yearly review of the record in the books of heaven with grief and not with joy, ending with a starless crown, with entrusted talents lost when life is lived apart from Christ and in service to self and influence weighed and found wanting. For everyone entrusted with the Lord's goods faces a reckoning when probationary time ends and destiny is decided for eternity, when the Master scrutinizes the return of every talent, and unfaithfulness risks eternal destiny and loses the soul for meager earthly gain while through influence carrying many others with it, so safety is found only in repentance, absolute surrender with no reserve, fighting on the Lord's side, placing affections on things above, valuing eternal treasure, keeping God's commandments, educating and training all powers to return His own with usury, keeping first love with Christlike humility and self-denying labor, and using time and privileges in earnest work that bears lasting fruit. Rejecting Christ and the gospel's gracious appeals and turning entrusted gifts away from God's service leads to loss of immortal life and casting into outer darkness where there is weeping and anguish.

Entrance and eternal life are gifts of grace purchased by Christ's blood, and choosing self-rule instead of allegiance to the rightful King leads to that rejection, while each worker's responsibility is measured by gifts entrusted so that those with greater opportunities and clearer understanding of Scripture bear greater responsibility and must use talents for God's glory and increase them by winning souls. The judgment warns that the servant who fails to use what the Lord entrusts faces judgment, for the Lord gives every person work according to ability and each must advance and faithfully do that work and make the most of opportunities to serve and represent Christ in word and deed, since idleness and careless neglect of responsibility are not acceptable uses of those gifts. Failing to correct defects of character and refusing to submit to God leaves a person unable to overcome and at risk of losing everlasting life under this casting into outer darkness.

Talents Owned and Distributed

Talents mean more than earthly employments and worldly goods, involving eternal interests to be reckoned with eternity in view as a loan from the Master to be invested for His glory and a stewardship of grace and endowments for a sacred higher trust. Christ paid for entire obedience and service with His own blood and sufferings, life itself is not our own but bought with a great price and costly in view of His sacrifice, and people belong to God by creation and redemption as Creator and source of all life. Every talent remains the Lord's own to be used to gain other talents and consecrated in soul, body, spirit, words, voice and every work, so to use ability only to accumulate worldly goods, to bury it in worldly enterprises or where it cannot be improved, or to use it for self is delusion, unfaithfulness and robbing God, while even the humblest service done at His bidding becomes a consecrated gift. The profitable servant trades upon what is entrusted and continually improves it by spending all powers in doing God's will from the heart in humility, looking to Jesus and depending on divine wisdom rather than lifting the soul to vanity in self-confidence, self-sufficiency and presumption. Such improving proclaims the last message of mercy because the end is at hand and carries forward God's work at home and abroad, placing self on the altar as a living sacrifice following Him who gave His life for the world, whereas those lifted up in self-sufficiency are left to their own wisdom and humbled by defeat while humble trusting consecrated workers receive divine power, are made wise unto salvation, become His representatives and are greatly blessed through Him. Burying means feeling no real obligation to represent truth in life and character and failing to testify by reformed life to the power of grace and to exalt God's law before those who make it void by wrong principles, and husbanding carefully means putting talents out to the exchangers especially for foreign missions.

The goods entrusted are the Lord's own loan including life, health, time, strength, body, mind, soul, intellect, reason, capabilities, knowledge, light, truth, influence, opportunities, position, business, possessions, income, means, money, property, houses, lands, sympathy and affection, to be valued, cultivated, doubled and returned with increase for God's glory rather than self. Time, influence, intellect, sympathy and affection are to be diligently used and improved for Christ to draw others to Him, and physical, mental and spiritual powers are to be increased by right use in His service. Powers of mind are to be cultivated for the greatest good and God's glory rather than neglected, and every person not only a favored few is given work with spiritual, mental and physical abilities with position, possessions, affections and sympathies to be used for salvation of souls. Property, time, strength, mental ability and opportunities used chiefly for self or withholding help from the needy is unworthy stewardship to be answered for, with lost opportunities possibly entrusted to more faithful stewards, and money, houses and lands are to advance His work and kingdom not self-glorification and selfish desire.

Responsibility is personal, proportionate and universal, talents lent by God to every man according to ability with soul, body and spirit bought with a price to be required again and sacredly employed to do His will without trifling, and hiding a talent and doing no good with it is failure to appreciate the gift. To every man is given his work and special place on earth to cooperate with Christ for salvation of souls as surely as the heavenly mansion prepared, five to him able to use five, two to him able to improve two, one to him able wisely to use only one, not capriciously, and He is equally honored by improvement of each trust whether great or small expecting returns according to what a man has and not what he has not. Every servant must give personal account now before probation ends and the account is fixed, the Master examining use, even one unused talent bringing accountability, rewards matching faithful improvement and punishment matching abuse, with the five and the two equally commended as good and faithful, made rulers over many and entering the joy of the lord, while the murmuring unfaithful is judged wicked and slothful and his talent taken and given to the faithful. Every reasoning person has a gift so feeling unqualified or unfitted does not excuse neglect, for consecration gives wisdom, tongue and utterance, and God requires only proportionate improvement not five from the one with two but faithful cultivation in taking hold of one line after another as it presents itself to advance the kingdom and save souls. Even one talent hidden instead of put to use brings the same loss as neglecting greater trust, while faithful use of little receives the same reward as faithful use of much.

God does not give the same amount to all, to one five, to another two, to another one, but desires everyone to do his best, so having only one small talent is no excuse and even one must be put to use where it can increase, for God does not require five to produce ten. One talent must be put out to the exchangers to roll back disease and suffering and help against darkness, and faithfully used it will be increased as God accepts purposes and cooperates with efforts. Every talent including a single one has a place where it can be used in meeting needs and benevolent work, small influence must be used for good and improved in probation, and faithful use of small gifts in duties at hand helps others and prepares for greater responsibility rather than remaining idle for inability to do greater work. Greater gifts bring greater responsibility to serve with compassion and humility, each responsible to return in proportion to what was given.

God measures servants not by how many talents they hold but by faithful use, expecting interest proportionate to capital, so one talent faithfully used is of far more value than many left unused and fits for larger responsibilities. Every person from lowliest to highest is steward of goods delivered in every age to fill his appointed place by faithfully discharging duties in the Word, using talents for good not evil with honest earnest endeavor, with even humblest opportunity especially to win souls a consecrated gift, each generation having its special trust. Life is on trial to be tried as gold in fire with strict examination of use of His goods, Christ having right to service by purchase with His own life to secure love and willing obedience, so gaining eternal life is not to be trifled with and future welfare depends on faithful improvement. God does not expect the same return from one as from five, and no one is accountable for gifts never given nor should dismiss a gift as too small or complain of size but do best service possible, for work with one is as valuable as work with five and faithfulness determines reward. The condemned servant is the one with many talents refusing right use and despising humble duties, while faithful performance of small humble nearest duties fits for larger trust, and whether one or five or ten the responsibility is the same with not a farthing to be misapplied to personal notions but the eye single to God's glory through persevering seeking, whole surrender and willingness to be and do anything even in humblest unpleasant place.

Stewardship cannot be transferred, merged, taken over, purchased or controlled by another person, council, conference, committee or institution, for to every person God has given his own work and moral and spiritual capital including every natural or spiritual gift and ability to write a book, and each must trade personally, exercise sanctified judgment, and give account of himself to God and not to man. One talent well used will gain others and faithful use of few pence is judged as faithful as improvement of five, and gifts used well produce further service judged by what was entrusted not by comparison. No man or council may make little of another's talents, weigh them in human judgment, merge individuality, urge any to make another his steward, take control of stewardship and profits for conference or publishing house, place mind or talent under human control, purchase it to rule absolutely, or leave writers under men without experimental knowledge of authorship who belittle God's agents, for such plans are unjust, unequal, narrow, conceited and not heaven-inspired. No one is to sell his stewardship as if unable to manage it but must develop character by trading himself, appreciating capital not treating it with indifference, doing best possible service where he can to God's glory, with individual sphere of labor developed and gain used to advance God's work without selfishness, surrendering it separating the agent from God and exposing him to temptation. Talents represent God-given abilities belonging to every person not a favored class, valued before God not by number but by appreciation and employment, to be consecrated to His glory not self-glorification in faithful humble use.

No one may take God's place to order, dictate and lord over another's mind and talents, controlling them for his own will and treating people as machines, for workers are entrusted with household goods to improve according to ability as laborers together with God with open communication between God and the soul, regarded with love and tenderness as worthy of trust. No leader is given liberty to be voice and conscience for brethren, to dictate details or circumscribe intelligent judgment, but work must be left for the worker with eye single to God's glory, and those demanding control make a difficult path, misrepresent Christ's life and show wisdom and Christianity that cannot be respected or trusted. Leaders who gather all responsibilities to themselves hinder the work and must answer for souls.

God is owner of lent talents and each person is individually accountable, talents given for Christ's work where each part depends on the other, humanity created related as a web to imitate His goodness as consecrated channels of blessing. Human life is under God's disposal in His hands with answer required for time, influence, means and all gifts, no person his own having been bought with a price and owing life-service to God, so binding the mind by promises to men to do or not do things and placing God second shows a strange idea of God. God arranged all connected together and to Himself so none can be dropped without affecting the whole, human beings related as part of the web to imitate His goodness and let blessings from abundant resources flow through to make others happy, with every provision to be children of God and objects of special love and care if true and loyal to His commandments.

The verse does not present God as a hard taskmaster demanding without providing, for He freely supplies means, instruction, opportunity and liberal plans, expecting only according to what was received and giving room to use gifts in cooperation with others rather than setting workers aside. Every church member given his own appointed work must arouse to living cooperation, receiving God's message and doing what He would have done, eternal welfare depending on faithful discharge of every duty large or small using every advantage and striving for Christ's righteousness while learning continuously from the great Teacher and making all according to the pattern shown in the mount. Mistakes under temptation are not necessarily willful or beyond pardon when done with desire to promote His glory, and those entrusted with responsibility should receive help and counsel rather than censure, with talents increasing as used.

Using money wisely proves money is not god and mammon not master, talents being money and means in hands for a little while to test whether money has greater power than God and His requirements, with money in faithful stewards made always to serve God's purpose. Entrusted talents wisely employed gain rich experience directly and indirectly and make rich in good works blessing fellow men, and faithfulness does not mean parting with large sums and shifting responsibility upon others but acquiring wisdom to stand as faithful steward dealing with the Lord's goods with wisdom and discrimination.

Talents are gifts from Christ whose improper use disappoints Him, and each person is to recognize and use God-given gifts without envying or devaluing another's gifts and work.

Talents Include All Gifts

Talents include the powers of mind and speech, influence and other powers for which each person must give account, and reckless words and conduct waste those gifts, harm others and corrupt what was entrusted. Musical ability and the measure of light and privilege are likewise committed in trust to be held as God's gift, consecrated to His service, improved to glorify Him, and not used in self-indulgence to please self or to connect with the world, with refusal to render improvement forfeiting favor. The ability to sing is a talent of influence to be cultivated and used for God's glory under warning of judgment on failure to use what was entrusted. Words themselves are valuable gifts to be used to comfort and console rather than wasted or misused.

Time is a talent lent as entrusted capital with duty to improve and double it, committed to every man, woman, youth and child, of which God will require most strict account for every golden moment of probation. Every moment is of value and should be put to some good use, and wasting hours and days doing nothing to benefit self or bless others is shameful misuse and sin for which each must answer. Wasting means, time, strength and abilities on pursuits that do not serve God fails the trust, for these are to be used for the good of souls and God's glory. Those who refuse capabilities and time in unselfish service and sit idle when faithful workers are needed, because wages or gain are lacking, are weighed and found wanting, weaving character by selfishness, covetous trading, unfair dealing and idle days that decide eternal destiny. A day lost passes into a mournful record in heaven while a day in unselfish service outweighs a thousand in self-serving, and after test God will not favor those who robbed Him; wasted time and a life with no souls saved bring grief at the review, while thoughtful faithful use, even for moderate wages, would bring far greater prosperity to missionary enterprises.

Health is a gift entrusted by God for which people are accountable to their Creator, requiring learning the laws that govern it and restraining immoderate desires, appetites and passions to preserve it. Strength like money is entrusted capital to be used to best advantage, a valuable trust to be used wisely and not wasted through inaction. Professional men, especially physicians as guardians of the sick, are pledged to preserve God-given ability and obey the laws of their being, keeping complete self-control at all times, since wasting strength and leaving no reserve for emergency injures self, does injustice to those in care, and through lack of self-mastery in unexpected demands leads to irremediable blunders that make the servant unprofitable.

Life itself is a talent belonging to God, preserved moment by moment by His power, given in trust to be highly appreciated, studied out for His honor, and dedicated in consecrated unselfish service. People belong to Him by creation and by redemption at the price of His own life given by the only begotten Son, so every power, organ, sinew, muscle and portion of the living machinery is to be preserved and used for God. The final reward depends on how earnestly each does appointed work during life, giving eternal consequence to its use. Even the lowliest talent and humblest service, when consecrated, advance His kingdom, and doing one's best in thought and speech honors Him before people and angels.

Mind, intellect, mental and physical powers, perceptive faculties, voice, influence and ability to think and act are sacred trusts to be educated, trained, cultivated and improved to the uttermost so they grow, bring greatest good and develop every faculty. The Lord expects the steward to train all powers to return His own with usury, keeping first love, humility and self-denying labor for souls rather than pride, self-sufficiency, coldness and leaving hard work for others. The human mind is like rich garden soil needing daily culture of mind and heart, for without exercise in gaining knowledge it sinks into ignorance, superstition and fancy, becomes overgrown with weeds of ignorance, and if intellectual faculties are not cultivated to glorify God they become powerful aids to perdition. Entrusted gifts including intellect and means are to be used in God's service to help the poor and advance the work, with care of the body and habits from childhood part of accountability for faculties.

Light, truth, Bible knowledge and privilege of knowing the Word, including great light and present truth, are entrusted talents to be used, shared and reflected to save souls, not kept for self, with greater light calling for greater faithfulness and responsibility to God and others. The talent is knowledge of the Lord, truth heard, rich gifts and light flooding the heart, given to be given freely so the agent reveals Christ, while churches become barren and souls starve not from lack of hearing but from neglecting to impart, folding hands in contentment yet expecting continued supply. Accumulated light of past and present with talents and knowledge is to be used wisely to advance missions, and neglect of that individual responsibility brings condemnation as unprofitable. Escaping that fate requires keeping the way of the Lord in humility and trust, making use of every talent especially great precious light from His Word by studying best use and doing thorough work now for eternity. Hiding talents means crowding in cities content merely to receive spiritual good instead of giving the Bread of life and witnessing to all the world, for which Christ at His coming in power will judge the church given great light.

Every youth's varied mental, moral and physical capabilities are talents entrusted by God to be cultivated, developed, strengthened and increased by use for His glory, since time and talents belong to God and no one is his own master to do as he pleases with time and intellect. Those talents in the young are to be consecrated to God's service in practical work bringing people to Jesus, developed by persevering effort rather than neglected or squandered under judgment and exclusion. They are to be wholly devoted to His service in character development for good, while even very small children under Christ's rule doing family missionary work and speaking childlike words for Jesus are accepted and may awaken echoes leading older people to Jesus, in contrast to those with many opportunities doing little and letting talents rust in unprofitable shame.

Physical strength, influence, voice, intellect and every hour of probation are sacred gifts to be consecrated and improved to the uttermost with diligence, fidelity, temperance and usury, time endowed with such sanctity that wasting minutes in indolence and apathy is sin. Physical strength is a precious talent to be used wisely in useful labor rather than sacrificed to idleness. All influence and physical energy belong to God, must be recognized, employed and used to His glory with best effort, gathering fragments in spiritual as in temporal things, for failure to value and use spiritual blessings and rays of light brings indifference. Trading intelligently requires bringing good from the heart's treasury, surrendering all capabilities to be sanctified and employed in pure service including careful treatment of stomach and brain for clear mind and sweet temper, since inconsiderate use, waste or embezzlement is robbery toward God. Right use requires uplifted standard, strength of mind, aptitude, firmness with gentleness, hold on people and on God, and imbuing by the Spirit as channels for angels to work for the weak, cultivating every power to highest consequence to secure other talents of high spiritual quality.

Money, skill, health and physical, mental and moral talents are entrusted gifts not one's own, requiring account with increase, to be wisely improved rather than used carelessly or left unproductive. Means is the Lord's talent, every penny His, not for pleasing self or children's fancies but to be invested in His cause to furnish facilities carrying forward His work and arresting the world with nearness of the end. All people hold God's goods to test allegiance, and He wants each to make all possible of himself to have more capability to return by imparting to receive more, through gifts, offerings, possessions and compassionate service to needy perishing souls, remembering daily what God is, asking what can be done for Him, and holding Him forever, so willing cheerful givers lay treasure in heaven unto eternal weight of glory. Resources invested in God's work can be multiplied, while failure to use them for intended purpose leaves the servant unprofitable.

Talents are more than money, including communication, knowledge of truth, natural gifts and social advantages to be consecrated and used to help others, not for self-pleasing. They are genius and capabilities such as those of a physician as well as money, not one's own but entrusted to be used for Him alone with self-denial learned from childhood, with record kept of every dollar and responsibility for the Lord's money.

Mental powers, intellect, reason and privileges are talents owed to God who gave existence, to be consecrated unreservedly, developed by education and Scripture study, and improved at the post where placed to serve intelligently, represent the Bible religion, warn sinners and win souls from light to light. They are abilities, powers and blood-bought privileges made valuable by God's favor in the heart, increased by surrender uniting weakness to infinite wisdom and might to overcome and bless hearts. Eternal welfare depends on their use, with angels soliciting fellowship in doing God's will as devotedly as in heaven, surveying neglected or bungled God-appointed work, sorrowing over consequent lost souls, ready to cooperate though unable to discharge human duty in drawing souls through the infinite gift. Ability, talent, intelligence and means make men stewards to carry forward His work among poor and unlearned and also with attractive presentation to the able and wealthy by intelligent Spirit-led courageous labor, for even those making wealth their god may accept the last message by right effort and, when the poor have done all, men of means will be brought in. Greater abilities bring greater condemnation for use in Satan's service, warning youth knowing truth yet resisting God's claims to change before too late.

Talents mean mental and moral capabilities, intelligence, religious devotion, knowledge, education and influence over family and neighbors, to be used while mind is vigorous and susceptible to grace. To improve them is to study for time and eternity, obtain best knowledge and highest education, and cooperate as God's agent communicating truth, enlightening others with force proportionate to intelligence and devotion as a bright light, with accountability to God as strongest motive, since selfish influence contracts intellect, hardens heart and leaves unprofitable.

God has entrusted talents of body, mind and affections that people may have eternal life, to be used in service of the entire being with every part in action, physical life educated, intellect and reasoning powers used for Him, conscience supreme, and mental, physical powers with affections cultivated to highest efficiency. By that full development the divine nature is revealed, Christ represented, and man qualified to cooperate in saving souls, while using only certain parts makes service deficient and neglect, misuse or deprivation of health and efficiency of any organ displeases Him. This cultivation is perfection of character required, fitting the whole being as temple for the Holy Spirit, with faith laying hold of the only completing power.

Life and every ability are the Lord's capital lent to be trained, disciplined and used in required service, with Jesus watching every moment from infancy rather than leaving souls alone with inherited weakness and cultivated tendencies, since human beings belong to Him by creation and purchase. To waste spared life as common on nothingness, exert careless indifferent influence leading others to sin, and leave talents untrained is misappropriation dishonoring Him, giving Him no pleasure, and must meet a reckoning of how His property was used.

Burying Talent Through Neglect

Neglect begins in distrust and jealousy toward God, in fear and sloth and murmuring and self-excuse, the servant calling his lord hard and exacting, one who reaps where he has not sown and gathers where he has not strawed, hiding the talent in the earth from anxious desire to benefit self and thinking improvement would only be gathered by the owner and not profit himself. He complains God is harsh and severe and unjust, withholds his powers and robs God daily, remains only a consumer instead of trading upon God's goods as provider and putting the gift out to the exchangers, and returning only what was given does not remove responsibility, for excuse and fear do not excuse and the unused talent is taken and given to the one with ten talents. To escape that fate a person must stop planning only for self-benefit and walking where Christ does not lead, surrender self and follow Christ, keep every thought and will and endowment under His control, trade upon entrusted gifts according to ability to return fruit in season, relieve suffering humanity, and lay up good foundation, for God is in truth a rich giver who entrusts gifts to be used. Thousands now do the same by living for self instead of improving abilities for God, and failure to use every gift aright, including speaking helpful uplifting words to bless others, brings great loss and ends in rejection, loss, eternal separation from God and loss of future joy.

The slothful servant misrepresents the master from a false view through not knowing Him and not trusting His mercy and grace, regarding Him as harsh and unreasonable, which reveals a fearful, unloving, stubborn heart. His claim of fear does not excuse burying the talent, his bitter complaint measures his own sentence, and claiming inability denies that power is given for what is required. Hiding the gift reveals lack of faith and love, and through neglect he not only leaves his own appointed work undone but becomes a hindrance to others and a channel of darkness through which grievances against God are poured into hearts, acting blind to present and future interest and losing in every way. Those entrusted with sacred responsibilities are therefore warned not to abandon work for easier positions or use its demands as excuse for unfaithfulness, and not to avoid entrusted work to escape mistakes, which would be still more dangerous failure, but to rely on grace and faithfully use what is entrusted, since remaining unprepared in faith imperils eternal destiny.

Hiding means having light graciously given about duty yet being too slothful to perform it, taking no part and imparting nothing to others, so the servant is without excuse. Faithfulness requires putting money to the exchangers by exchanging with others the light and experience given, imparting and benefiting them, and gaining even one soul from Satan's ranks adds other talents to the Lord that keep increasing as that soul in turn improves what is given. The contrast is with the faithful servant who uses influence and means to help save others, gains further talents as people are saved, and returns principal with increase at the Master's coming, while holding riches back is disobedience bringing loss.

Burying or wrapping the talent in earth means handling the Lord's goods as one's own, seeking self-advantage, wasting and using for selfish earthly purposes, hoarding through distrust and fear, keeping possessions for self instead of saving others, and merely keeping or retaining what was entrusted instead of improving it. It includes reckless spending and neglect of opportunity, leaving generous or spiritual qualities unemployed, and hoarding means in farms and business instead of helping spread truth and winning souls, which loses the eternal reward that might have been gained. The buried talent in the world represents failure to use Christ's gifts of means and influence in His service, leaving souls unreached and fostering covetousness, and the Master's return brings exact accounting with reward corresponding to faithfulness, perseverance and effort. The one-talent servant is not judged for failing to manage more but for failing to use what he received, whether one, two or five.

Burying leaves God-given good unused and fails to bring gain for the Lord, revealing a heart not in the work to which he was called, showing selfishness, neglect and no desire to know or serve God. The one talent belonged to God, and hiding rather than using it is unfaithfulness to what belonged to God, punished by outer darkness, with the servant held responsible for how he used what he received. Fear of trusting God with covetousness and unwillingness to make personal effort or give to His work leaves the servant without benefit and amounts to robbing God and himself, ending in condemnation as unprofitable and casting into outer darkness.

The condemned servant's sin is not great vileness and unsurpassed wickedness but neglect in doing the work he ought to have done; his sin is in not doing, losing all because he does not do what he might have done, neglecting everyday little duties of life. Simple though these duties are they are of consequence, Christ gives no commendation except for diligent use of privileges and faithful discharge of duty, and many will lose heaven because they do not attach sufficient importance to little duties and make burdens for others by heedlessness. Neglect and omission are judged as unfaithfulness, servants held accountable not only for what they did but for good they could have done and failed to do, condemnation not confined to revolting or most revolting sins. Those who live to please self, avoid responsibility, do no work for Christ and let self-seeking hold largest place receive the same condemnation as those who did evil, and those living to please self with self forgotten in business fail to improve talents, disqualify themselves for usefulness they might have filled, disappoint the Master, cause souls to be lost, and bear penalty for failing God's purpose. God provides opportunities and abilities for growth in knowledge and virtue and expects them used, returning the talent unused does not satisfy, Christ will not be satisfied with bare return but calls for His own with usury and expects increase, every provision having been made to do this. The reckoning is individual according to talents received including all improvement that might have been made but was not through unfaithfulness, merely retaining capital instead of trading and putting it to exchangers, and cannot be vested in any minister, requiring every Christian to act with skill and efficiency as home missionaries at home, in family, church and world. Leaving capabilities unimproved deprives the vineyard of labor it should have, and the servant will be dealt with according to work he might have done, with faithful use improving one talent to gain another and bringing increased ability, tact, knowledge and experience in humble labor to bring souls to truth.

People are judged for neglected opportunities to serve and glorify God and for abilities and knowledge left unused, and neglected talents and knowledge bring eternal loss even if the person is not ultimately lost and does not lose his soul. The good that could have been done but was not done is required, neglect of known duties and letting talents lie unused makes unfaithful, and such neglect can mean lost souls and responsibility for resulting evil, with example and influence also leading others to be lost. Responsibility is measured not only by present abilities but by gifts originally given and possibilities failed to develop, for inactivity and devotion to worldly pursuits that weaken developable abilities does not excuse, and God judges for what could and ought to have been done. Unused abilities count as much as those put to use, every hour and opportunity lost in careless inaction is eternal loss, and even those who do not lose souls experience eternally the results of unused talents. Condemnation is not confined to revolting sins, for in judgment reference will be made not especially to actual transgressions but to neglect of doing what might have been done but was not for lack of qualifications Christ died to place within everyone's reach, every provision having been made for continual progress in knowledge and virtue through what Christ did and suffered. The heaviest burden rests on those with greatest talent, largest means and most abundant opportunity, and people are justified by faith but judged by works.

No excuse avails, whether refusing because others undervalue abilities, waiting for greater opportunities or holier dispositions, leaving hard work for others, or choosing own course and will despite same opportunities and access to God's help. Talents come from God to be used for His glory, all soul and body must now be consecrated to Christ trusting He will use consecrated believers as instrumentalities to do His will, while spiritual pride, self-sufficiency, coldness and bungling stewardship fail the scrutiny when the Lord comes to require His own with usury. Choosing own course rebels against God and receives punishment according to work, and refusing God's claim to service is unthankful and disobedient. Having only one small gift does not excuse neglect, for even one talent carefully used for God could accomplish much and by careful use could be doubled, while neglected gifts are lost. Even one talent hidden instead of put to use brings same loss as neglecting greater trust, faithful use of little receives same reward as faithful use of much, and those with only one talent are responsible to use means for God's cause rather than selfishly holding back or investing little while pursuing worldly enterprises.

The unprofitable servant represents selfishness and covetousness which is idolatry, wasting capacities on self-gratification and display, slothfulness, criticism, grasping for wages and refusing self-denial and work unless benefited himself. Not using entrusted talents is robbing God, for every talent of money and ability is God's property created and purchased by Him to be improved, and burying where they cannot be improved chooses idleness and moral darkness under the enemy's leading. Many professing present truth dwarf God-given powers in frivolous amusements, selfish ambition and commonplace absorption when highest themes are within grasp, and selfishness, covetousness, slothfulness and misconception of duty leave the trust unused and constrict God's work. Such a servant loses time, retards work he could have advanced, sacrifices God's property, leaves double burdens on others, criticizes and complains, plants a leaven of close selfish dealing that communicates to other workers with worst results, and because God has done great things every heart should expand to return entrusted talents to restore His moral image, lest selfishness with means give victory to Satan with great loss of souls.

A do-nothing life robs and dishonors the Creator and Redeemer whose property every created talent and purchased agent is, the unprofitable choosing idleness rather than yielding up and crucifying selfishness and covetousness, pitying self instead of sharing others' burdens. Sitting idle with evil surmisings and criticisms, studying how matters could be managed better than those doing the work, supposing ability and wisdom while accomplishing nothing, desiring and resolving and telling what he can do without unselfish work, benefits neither himself nor fellow man and leaves him accountable for that wise calculation. Leaving talents unprofitable through criticizing brethren and their work and acting without reasoning from cause to effect brings the casting out pronounced on the unprofitable, and cruel fault-finding keeps talents buried. Cruel words, backbiting, reproach, scandal and envy from unruly tongues take away surety and peace and make sufferers afraid to take responsibility and exercise gifts, so fear of being followed and found fault with keeps talents unimproved where God gave precious gifts to be improved by use in trust. Talents are sacred gifts to be used with most earnest effort very soon for personal salvation and others' salvation in preparation for eternity.

The buried talent as failure to use what God entrusts condemns the servant, professed love for truth does not excuse an unfaithful course, and when the Spirit reveals character one should accept correction rather than complain of severity. Those refusing to use intellect for God are after test and trial left to their own imaginings and set aside as unprofitable, and in their place God takes men not appearing richly endowed and without large self-confidence and makes the weak strong because they trust Him to do what they cannot do for themselves. God accepts whole-hearted service and makes up deficiencies, taking those who will be molded and using material others would pass by, working all who will be worked so that through simple means a door is opened and human simplicity reveals God to man. Yielding entrusted soul, body and spirit to selfish deceptive influence and using them to hold others back from surrender to Christ misuses the trust wholly to be consecrated to the Redeemer, and unless there is repentance and conversion the unprofitable is cast out into darkness with no place among the sinless throng made white by blood, while Christ still holds out His hand offering strength to save those slipping toward ruin if they take hold and break with deception. A talent of mind, influence and speech rightly employed would have done good to church and world, but when used under the enemy's training to plant suspicion, untruthful distrust of brethren, resistance to counsel and hindrance to ministry it is laid in ruins. God takes the matter into His own hands in judgment, the unprofitable become almost useless, powers that should have been strong eaten away as by cancer, left helpless, silenced and burdened as one dead while living, remaining as a monument of displeasure.

Faithful Use Brings Increase

Talents put to use multiply because God works with people to strengthen and enlarge the gifts they exercise in wholehearted service, persevering effort and cooperation with the Holy Spirit, so that diligent, conscientious trading on the Lord's goods according to His Word brings continual leading to greater efficiency, multiplication by the Lord, and entrance into joy and rulership. All blessings belong to Him and are to be used without selfishness, worldly ambition or human judgment for building up truth, keeping self out of sight while Christ is held before the world unto perfect manhood and womanhood, with different gifts given according to ability and each, whether many or few, to do his utmost. Hiding brings no increase, while using what is given multiplies it, and even the smallest trust from God can be made more useful by diligent self-denying service which He values however humble the worker or gift.

What is faithfully used, developed and exercised in unselfish service grows and brings greater responsibility and influence, while ability left unused is lost with both increase and principal, leaving no treasure in heaven, no place among the righteous and no Friend to receive there. Life and every ability are entrusted to be used for God and the good of others and of the whole, increase including the good brought to others, measured according to ability, with God cooperating with sincere workers and supplying need, and with burying as the opposite course. Even one talent used from love is accepted, blessed and rewarded, and humble present work is better than idleness.

Putting what has been learned to practical use increases wisdom, power and capability, and consecration makes abilities useful in His service, while neglect causes degeneration and rejection. Those who use what they have receive more grace, spiritual strength and understanding, and as they bear their whole weight upon God He strengthens them just when strength is required and makes them channels of light to many in darkness. Faithfulness in a small trust prepares for greater responsibility, and using gifts in dependence on Christ enables growth and blessing to others, whereas refusing plainly opened doors of usefulness cripples missionary work and brings the condemnation of the unprofitable servant and the men of Meroz. Believers are to do the nearest work however humble, circulate truth, hold meetings and labor for neighbors and for souls, not merely earn a livelihood, so that bearing much fruit glorifies the Father.

Entrusted talents must be improved, cultivated and returned with increase, faithful exercise causing growth so that small mites gain pounds, while talents left unused through inaction and uncultivated powers are wasted and face final loss, especially when neglected for worldly pursuits. Each is given work and is responsible for using and improving every faculty for His glory, with accountability for what was given and with diligent thorough effort required to make talents fruitful, and educators to help youth discover and use them. Reward is measured by fidelity, consecration and purity of motive rather than greatness of talent, so humble ordinary duties done conscientiously as service to God bring approval and the same reward as larger accomplishments. No one may remain idle for lack of five talents, highest place or work for multitudes, but even one talent however few must be traded in waiting smaller duties and work for individuals, not hidden in earth or napkin, with every capability used in gospel proclamation to every nation and kindred and tongue and people with Jesus ever before the worker, leaving results with God who alone measures work and gives wages according to spirit.

The Lord alone proves fidelity in trading on lent property, discerning capabilities and time employed for Him and scrutinizing returns, with every soul's work standing clearly when He makes up His jewels. Faithfulness not amount or show decides, so the humble worker laboring as unto God with few talents counts for more than bustle and parade interposing self between people and God, and receives just as large a reward and entrance into joy, while the unfaithful steward corrupting power, dishonoring God and failing to present Christ in character is challenged and condemned. The highly gifted carry weight of responsibility for improvement or abuse, and the reward not all gathered in this life appears when judgment sits and books open, when some with ordinary talents striving earnestly in self-denial and self-sacrifice are seen to have done more than those with larger trusts. Readiness requires accepting the Holy Spirit, becoming Christlike and holy in all conduct, with no harsh stinging condemnatory words, no closed heart and no calling God's work fanaticism.

God entrusts small ability as well as larger talents and expects it put to usury from love to the best of ability, and even small capabilities cheerfully and willingly used in humble service proportionate to what was received increase from strength to strength and receive approval as channels through which light and grace flow. Effort from a heart overflowing with love, even by the ignorant and humble appealing to one out of Christ, is noticed in heaven, and a small offering with cheerful gratitude is blessed and classed with the widow's mite. Even the smallest talent and humblest service counts as faithful stewardship when offered to Jesus as a consecrated gift, made acceptable by Christ presenting it to the Father with fragrance of His merits, and if the best is presented with sincere heart from longing to serve Jesus it escapes condemnation. Hiding reveals lack of faith and love by complaining the Master is hard and reaping where He has not sown, leaving appointed work undone, hindering others and becoming a channel of darkness for grievances, blind to present and future interest and losing in every way. Each is given a talent and appointed work requiring faithfulness without despising humblest employment or claiming greatest service, but doing small work in the best way until it grows under his hand, with steadfast continuance in the same God-given line bringing blessing, success and victory after victory with angels going before, and with Christ as Educator constantly fitting the worker better and still better.

Talents kept pure and used for God in this life will be strengthened and employed on a wider nobler plan in the life to come, while outer darkness and sorrow mark those failing to use entrusted powers. Faithful endeavor in right use of what is given is recognized in heaven with greater light, larger responsibilities and increased ability for service. All may perfect character after the divine likeness as a sample of Christ's character through discipline of work in and through Christ to gain true riches, and may take into the heavenly courts the preciousness of complete character gained in Jesus, the only treasure that can be taken. Gifts increase as they are appreciated, valued and used to honor God from whom they come rather than to please and glorify self, with Christ's fullness awaiting every receiver. Receiving requires coming to Christ in faith asking for eternal riches and the Holy Spirit who willingly blesses, strengthens and gives His riches, and the more grace treasures are discovered and drawn upon the more anxious the receiver to have all enjoy them, drawing from the inexhaustible source to gladden hungry starving souls with living bread from heaven, ability to enlighten minds in error being measured by capacity to appreciate these gifts, every man being of value as entrusted with the richest obtainable gift.

Faithful use even while making mistakes is not the failure condemned, for diligent service and growth in knowledge and practical obedience distinguish it from unprofitableness, making confidence grow and talents multiply. Those constrained by Christ's love are faithful to work and Word in trading, not sluggard, non-committal or divided, but of one mind and judgment, quick to detect and name errors so no cheap bungling work enters God's cause. Like Daniel the profitable servant feels dependence on his Maker without shame, takes no credit but gives all honor to God before worldly men and brethren, weeds from life all grieving God's Spirit, and improves every opportunity adding to acquirements and trading on given talents by holy principles of the Word, which gives multiplied ability. Abilities and influence lent to be used, developed and returned with increase grow by imparting useful knowledge learned, while accumulating unusable knowledge hinders usefulness.

Talents are to be wisely employed, cultivated through use and devoted to His service so use may glorify God rather than left unused, and improving every talent diligently helps a person become more Christlike. Talents must be made to increase because unincreased they diminish, and the talent of speech must benefit others not be wasted in unprofitable use, with right use when God's Word governs feelings and actions, heart state governs inner principles, and pure principles produce right words and acts. Money and resources as entrusted talents are to be faithfully and rightly used to advance His cause, every wholehearted giver applying each talent thereto, neglect having grave consequences of rejection and punishment, while the Lord increases talents of those willing to work and expects cultivation and use of abilities received. Faithful service offers God a consecrated gift like fragrant incense and savor of life, with every effort from a pure sincere heart a fragrant offering, and the more knowledge is used and powers exercised the more knowledge and power are acquired for more and better work, corresponding to light shining into the heart and measure of Christ's fullness received, trading and investing so the Master may receive His own with usury at His coming. Faithful service enabled by Christ's grace and strength is acknowledged, and Christian character developed through good works reaps what was sown with work begun on earth reaching completion in eternal life. Every talent and ability comes from heaven in trust for becoming co-workers with Jesus as living agents through whom He communicates light, with right use meaning improving talents by putting them out to the exchangers and committing heavenly truth to faithful people able to teach others also.

Reckoning and Just Judgment

The present is the time of stewardship, the opportunity to put means and powers into circulation for God's glory and the salvation and relief of others before probation ends and each person's account is fixed forever. The prospect of the soon coming of Christ is a call to work now, for after a long time the Master comes to require His own with increase, and opportunities wasted now cannot be recovered when it is eternally too late. At that reckoning every servant must give a personal account of talents — means, influence, powers of mind, light and capacity — with rewards matching faithful improvement and punishment matching abuse, even one unused talent bringing accountability. There is no second probation and no another chance; each is rewarded in exact proportion to zeal, fidelity and success in trading.

Each person individually is now on test and trial while God watches how His blessings, capabilities and time are used, especially the great light from His Word, requiring thorough work now for eternity in humility and trust. The reckoning comes when probationary time ends and destiny is decided for eternity, at Christ's coming with power and great glory to judge and to scrutinize the return of every talent, and no one knows the day nor the hour when probation may close. Hiding talents includes sitting idle when faithful workers are needed because desired wages or gain are not obtained, and selfishly withholding resources from needy parts of the work, with such unfaithfulness and deception then exposed. Safety is found only in keeping the way of the Lord and doing His will at all times, in repentance, absolute surrender, placing affections above, valuing eternal treasure and keeping His commandments, lest unfaithfulness risk eternal destiny for meager earthly gain and carry others with it.

At His coming Christ will reckon with each one, call each by name, and expect results from everyone according to ability, giving reward or punishment according as the work has been, with reward proportionate to faithful labor. Day by day and hour by hour as responsible beings men are building for the last great day and making their record in the books of heaven, trading on the Lord's money in winning souls and advancing His kingdom with money and gifts of mind and body. Spiritual indolence that leaves souls unwon makes one responsible for good that might have been done, and expecting another chance is a fatal delusion. The full consequences of faithful giving and wise use will not be known until then, when each person's work is examined.

The judgment is exact and just, with names, characters and motives weighed in the heavenly record, holding people accountable for time, abilities, opportunities and powers to be used in His service rather than left unused or lived for selfish purposes. The record examined includes neglected opportunities, time spent on unimportant matters and in visiting and talking about unimportant matters, days without prayer with nothing to show, duties left undone, large expenses with little results, and defects registered as God views the year's labor, different from human reports. Merely possessing abilities is not enough; they must be diligently used, for to be found wanting by Christ who gave His life is a fearful matter. Profitable service is measured by faithfulness and results, in true education for labor in word and doctrine, drawing minds to the Saviour, sowing truth and reflecting Christ with prayer and union of effort, not working for men or trusting human wisdom.

The verse points to the investigative and last judgment, when each case is decided by faithfulness and the Lord requires interest in proportion to capital. Every talent — time, words, money, influence, abilities, and the light of truth — is examined for whether it was used for God's glory and the good of others, including care for the poor and afflicted and leading souls toward salvation. All are justified by faith but judged by works, because works show character; mere profession without love shown in works does not count as genuine, while even small acts done from love are accepted and rewarded. All capital and ability come from the Master, so the faithful give God the glory, and their reward and welcome into their Lord's joy are gifts of grace purchased by Christ, not grounds for claiming merit, with listlessness and lack of zeal affecting the judgment. Hoarding the Lord's goods and doing nothing, as with the one pound, brings loss of the soul and of eternal life, with faith working by love to purify the soul as a temple and to improve character and ability by trading.

Eternal welfare depends on the use made of entrusted talents, intellect and reason, money, property and probation given to test character, with each apportioned reward and each rewarded according to works. Believers are justified by faith but judged by works, the smallest gift not to be belittled, since diligent service increases entrusted talents while failure to use them brings condemnation and a curse when rewards are given. The careless, indolent and selfish who misapply precious talents to selfish purposes, seek exaltation above God's honor, shun responsibility, study ease and follow inclination instead of principle and devotion, and fail to keep the commandments, will receive the unprofitable servant's reward. Profession without following Christ in being good and doing good, blessing the needy and advancing His cause, is worthless and will not secure citizenship in the heavenly country or a place in the mansions prepared for those who love Him, for places are prepared according to unselfish fidelity. Angels solicit and stand ready to cooperate with human workers doing God's will as devotedly as angels do, sorrowing over ground lost to Satan through neglected or bungling work and souls lost in consequence, though they cannot take human place or discharge human duty.

There is a day of trust and a day of reckoning when all talents are accounted for, and everyone entrusted is held accountable whether sanctified through the truth or foolishly unaware of accountability. Trading means not confining labor to the churches but going where people starve spiritually and hunger for the Scriptures, opening precious truth to those in error to bless others, dedicating even a portion of time without pay to missionary work after receiving holy kindling in the heart. Those who so work to save perishing souls improve their talents and their light increases until they cannot but shine, while those who refuse must awake to God-given responsibilities before they sleep the sleep of death. Each entrusted talent must be returned to the Lord with gain, and His coming makes stewardship urgent, including preserving His institutions and supporting His servants.

People must faithfully use the Lord's goods and will answer to God for how they used them, with deeds recorded in heaven and each record examined, the unfaithful facing judgment rather than the reward given to faithful servants. Every hour spent in careless inattention to God's claims terribly wastes entrusted opportunities, privileges, mercies and entreaties that nothing can supply again, and keeping back part of the price is robbery toward God. What a man sows he reaps, and light and truth carelessly rejected work as a savor of death unto death, with terrible eternal loss; even if saved the crown is lessened, for stars differ in glory because each receives according to works. Embezzling the treasury, appropriating God's cause, borrowing without repaying, and acting dishonestly or recklessly deny Christ in action and write one as unfaithful.

The judgment exposes how small what was done is compared with what was left undone and what the Lord has done, a day spent in unselfish service for God being better than a thousand spent in self-serving. Those who refuse capabilities and time in unselfish service, sitting idle when work needs workers because wages or gain are wanted, are weighed and found wanting, their selfishness, covetous trading, unfair dealing and idle days weaving character and deciding destiny, passing as mournful record into heaven's books. After the day of test and trial those who robbed God will not be favored or used, and misusing gifts through self-indulgence and desire to impress others contradicts profession of faith. Each servant is reckoned with individually and rewarded in proportion to use according to ability and opportunity, answering in the great day for life's work as shown in actions, words, motives and influence, with shifting responsibility concealing nothing. One is judged for what could have been done with given intelligence and opportunities but was not done, a life wasting them strengthening Satan's kingdom, and those discouraged by fault-finding and indifferent to His institutions receive according to works.

Deeds are judged in proportion to the value placed on abilities, and condemnation is according to delinquency and nonimprovement measured by light and privilege, greater light, goods, opportunity and ability bringing greater responsibility. The servant hiding treasure instead of using it to God's glory is without excuse, and unfaithfulness in least marks all work as unfaithful, bringing slothfulness's penalty. Burying means in the earth, tying it in houses and lands, spending time and means in selfish indulgence, intemperate desire to dress like the world, and letting family demands lead into false paths shutting the heart to the poor and the cause so nothing rises in gifts and offerings, is hiding entrusted talents. Those given knowledge of truth must share it in meek, loving, fruitful work bringing others to righteousness rather than quarrelsome, oppressive conduct driving them away, for judgment is according to truth reaching and illuminating them, not lack of knowledge never had, and refusing known light leaves without excuse. No people favored with so great light, superior privileges and grace who fall far behind opportunities, fail to walk in the light and to seek daily counsel for proclaiming solemn truths, are condemned accordingly, God looking on the heart.

Day by day and hour by hour people are building for the last day and making their record in heaven, preparing reward or punishment, and expecting another chance is a fatal delusion with no second probation. Life, health, reasoning powers, strength, time, talents and money are the Lord's goods to be traded wisely and employed faithfully to His glory, every talent accounted for. Just now men are building for the last great day, and the judgment reveals the smallness of what was done against what was left undone.

Witness Warning and Mercy

The unprofitable servant is the slothful church member who knows present truth yet does no witnessing work, feels no burden for souls, lets them die unwarned, and seeks only personal salvation, while every converted soul is appointed to trade talents of light, ability and influence in good works and not merely talk, to penetrate error as dense as that around the Jewish nation in Christ's day, with unused talents required again with improvement, and no idler or slothful one will be found inside the kingdom. Hiding talents includes indifference to sinners and neglect of opportunity to help them, for seeking only one's own salvation without effort to secure others forfeits the crown. Every member has personal responsibility to cultivate piety, reach Christian perfection, improve talents, keep light on a candlestick with clear steady rays, and proclaim the solemn message with fervency that impresses unbelievers, for God is not pleased when careless, ease-loving, worldly-minded, halting and doubting members shirk praying, watching, believing, warning and entreating and leave burden-bearing to a few taxed to the utmost, when only a third of what He desires is being done. The warning applies to members who do not use talents to seek salvation of those ignorant of truth, whose neglect weakens the church and encourages backsliding, calling them to active missionary service, for every person has duty and ability to help others hear salvation and idleness has no place in God's kingdom.

Those who have feasted on truth for years but do not communicate light to other minds and use self, reasoning powers and capital of means to advance the kingdom and save souls will be pronounced slothful, unprofitable and cast out, taking hold of one line of work after another as it presents itself. Feeling unqualified or unfitted does not excuse neglect, for consecration gives wisdom, tongue and utterance, and God requires only proportionate improvement, not five talents from one entrusted with two, but faithful cultivation in service. The unprofitable servant neglects the entrusted work of warning sinners, and when he fails to warn the wicked to turn from wickedness and the righteous not to sin, the blood of those dying in iniquity is required at his hand and he himself is cast into outer darkness with weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Church membership alone does not secure entrance into the kingdom, and the servant who does nothing with opportunities, responsibilities and God-given capabilities faces exclusion and judgment, each accountable for use, called to faithful self-denying service to save souls, obedience to God's will, growth in character and active help in salvation. Talents are given to advance Christ's kingdom and save souls, and faithful use is measured by soul-blessing, directing strength to turn souls to righteousness, relieving the needy and clothing the naked, while burying leaves souls unreached. Burying entrusted means instead of putting them to work neglects responsibility and forfeits eternal reward and preparation for the Master's return, especially hoarding means in farms and business instead of spreading truth, keeping possessions for self fostering covetousness. Hiding leaves resources of no benefit, while putting them to work supports mission and serves Christ, and talents of means must be put to the exchangers, not hoarded nor buried selfishly, to present doubled principal and interest proved by how many blessed, hearts made grateful, bands of wickedness loosed, burdens undone, oppressed freed, yokes broken, hungry fed, outcast housed and naked covered. Talents are to be put to good use winning people to Christ, and abusing them and working against others' good brings fearful account at judgment for unused gifts.

Trading on the Lord's money means winning souls, sharing truth, instructing those ignorant of present truth, and advancing work in destitute towns, cities, new fields and among the Gentiles in regions beyond. The talents are the Lord's goods, the wages of Christ's sufferings and price of His blood, placed as loan and trust to secure willing servitude and obedience, to be put into circulation freely, unselfishly and cheerfully to work barren unworked fields into fruitful trees of righteousness through knowledge of God and His Word. Christ has entrusted servants with His money to trade by winning souls, and at His coming He will reckon and require account of what was done, as day by day men build for the last day and make record in heaven for reward or punishment with no second probation, reward proportionate to faithful labor because He expects results from everyone, and spiritual indolence leaving souls unwon makes them responsible for work they might have done. Believers must use time, influence, ability and money to share truth and bring light to darkness, support missions and proclaim the gospel to be found faithful, employing what is received in leading others to obedience. Men with means are doubly responsible to forward God's various branches with decided self-denying energy after Christ's example who gave His life and went before to show how to work, answering the cry from every quarter.

The Lord requires money, abilities, influence, powers of mind, and light and truth to be put to work spreading light to those in darkness, helping the poor and suffering as His agents, winning souls, benefiting others, glorifying God and advancing His cause rather than hidden under a bushel, and neglecting that duty is serious failure when the Master investigates. Everyone handling these talents is debtor to God and to fellow men without light, accountable to enlighten souls for whom Christ died, with grace ruling heart and subduing mind and thoughts to Jesus to make a powerful worker and co-worker with Christ and angels, turning mind to doing good and placing truth before others qualifying for success, rewarded with many souls as stars in a crown of rejoicing. Every church member rich or poor, great or humble, is light of the world with place according to ability, called into active service with every trained mind, disciplined intellect and jot of ability, for God depends on the church to forward His work and expects duty as intelligent beings. Even the smallest talent accomplishes appointed work, especially house-to-house, and one-talent workers reach a class others cannot, so those with two or five must not silence, condemn or discourage the less experienced, nor control labor by mere form, exact conformity of methods or laying hands on the humblest, but strengthen every willing hand. God in infinite wisdom gives to every servant according to known ability, powers and capacities, apportioning trusts and tests perfectly, opening ways, increasing intellect and cooperating with those trusting Him humbly without complaining, rewarding diligent honest service though trusts and returns are never equal, acceptance depending not on number returned but faithfulness, so doing best with one, two or five wins commendation while abuse must be answered with thorough consecrated work. Ability must be exercised in missionary labor and responsibility, for listening to sermon after sermon without practice brings deterioration, unexercised ability degenerates like rusting tools, and youth and even children must share with little errands of love and mercy.

Every church and member holds talent, gifts and power that must not lie dormant but be discerned, trained, cultivated to the utmost and called into active service by practical instruction for missionary labor to bless and strengthen the church, build it up, gather sheep and lambs, and reach unbelievers in cities, villages, towns and nations never aroused to raise new churches. Churches must be thrown on their own resources instead of depending on ministers, and the minister must not do all talking, laboring and praying but educate workers, letting different ones lead meetings and give Bible readings, through well-organized plans of wise workers. Each servant is entrusted with work according to ability and accountable for use, so the church must give every member opportunity lest gifts lie idle and fall to the enemy's purposes, for all are to serve though not all as preachers and without forcing every worker into one rigid method, each accountable only for gifts received, not those not received.

The unprofitable servant is God's people given great truth about the Sabbath and the third angel's message who hide it instead of proclaiming it while millions pass deceived about the false Sabbath, letting cares of the world engross time and attention due the Lord's work. Burying talent in earth means hiding light under a bushel, tying influence, capability, knowledge and means in business instead of putting them to the exchangers intelligently for advancement of the cause, and demands redeeming neglect by clothing with Christlike zeal to warn of danger and shine as lights, improving talents faithfully with unselfish interest so truth goes where the message never went and the standard is lifted in new places while the way is open, giving self wholly, redeeming time, identifying with the Redeemer and exemplifying truth in word, spirit and deed. Christ as absent Lord leaves professed servants under test over work for needy souls in the Southern field especially the colored people after emancipation, and to honor Him is to give His workmen means, influence and encouragement for self-denying work, while withholding help, giving little encouragement and contradicting profession by practice fails the test as unprofitable, losing fruit and leaving the work far different than practicing truth would have made it. Talents and money are lent to work for perishing souls, including teaching old men and women in the South to read after generations of deprivation, not to spend on self-gratification, dress and amusements while others remain in ignorance and sin, and those burying trust and pleading self-expenditure have no justification but are cast out. Every jot of time, experience, influence and ability of all claiming to be God's children must be put to directed improvement in proclaiming truth because time is short, in humble circumspect walking carrying work forward in Nashville and many Southern places, trading by wide-awake proclamation and self-sacrificing work rather than crowding in cities content merely to receive spiritual good instead of giving Bread of life to hungry souls worldwide, for waiting for others, neglecting God-given work, hindering instead of helping and zeal disproportionate to profession brings God's denunciation as unprofitable whom He cannot use.

Sharing light, warning others and winning souls with zeal is required rather than living godless, Christless, worldly lives while merely claiming belief, for obligation to let light shine grows with clarity received to make Christ known. Failing to use time, strength and abilities in service and truth-sharing, spending moments on pride and gratification, using abilities for self rather than God's glory, and neglecting opportunities to share truth and help others leaves the church withering and brings condemnation as unprofitable, for those entrusted with truth must use it wisely and skillfully. The parable is to be explained to urge inactive members to missionary work, train youth and teach others to use and increase talents, for educators should help young people discover, develop and bring God-given abilities into service rather than leave them unused. God entrusts talents to teachers and students requiring faithful practical use in blessing others, learning Bible principles for living and laboring and consecrating all abilities to God who has first right, and He blesses all seeking to bless others with continually increasing power, wisdom and knowledge through faithful use of what is learned.

Christ has chosen and ordained every believer, even where ministerial hands have not been laid, giving talents that must be traded by going to bring abiding fruit as witnesses and light of the world reflecting light in good works to glorify the Father, and because ordained ministers are insufficient every member must deny self, lift the cross and bear Christ's burdens in saving souls. Those saved should use what God gave to save others, for each saved person can lead many to salvation, and one blessed with light and grace but doing no active service neglects sacred duty plainly marked out, withholds good from God's people, deprives the world of means to come to God, loses rich grace, diminishes light, perils his own soul, and leaves unsought sheep unbrought to the fold, though faithful labor with means and abilities in self-denial can multiply one, five or ten talents doubled. Talents must not be hidden but put to use in labor not for fellow believers alone but for the world, fulfilling duties owed to it and standing in right relation to it. Decisions of the last day turn upon practical benevolence which Christ acknowledges as done to Himself, and those consecrated do duty cheerfully, while using property, time, strength, mental ability and opportunities chiefly for self or withholding help from need is unworthy stewardship to be answered, with gifts entrusted to more faithful stewards and lost opportunities of feeding hungry and clothing naked forfeited by every unnecessary penny spent on display and self-indulgence, covetous deferral until death multiplying nothing and receiving no commendation, and what is not devoted to Christ strengthening Satan's cause. The Lord's goods are mercy and grace and rich gifts and ample provision to supply necessities of the poor in temporal and spiritual things, for which someone is always responsible, and trading means relieving as far as possible the hungry, naked and imperiled, each stepping into post under the Spirit with channel constantly open and streams ever flowing to those dispensing bounties, while the unprofitable appropriates mercy to self, hardens in selfishness, climbs the judgment seat to condemn and magnify faults, magnifies his own mites of mercy, excuses himself for ingratitude despite God's continued riches, and receives no heavenly benediction, which rests only on those whose cold stony fierce hearts are broken, cleansed, warmed and controlled by Jesus' love.

Stewardship of Earthly Means

Talents include temporal means whose principal and increase belong to the Lord, entrusted to be traded to win souls, spread truth, relieve need and support missions, meetinghouses, sanitariums and schools rather than held for self, so selfish retaining and withholding tithe repeats the servant's sin. Burying or wasting what is entrusted instead of using it to advance God's work and save souls brings condemnation as unprofitable and loss of eternal life, and the warning applies to every person who has received the light of truth. Those who put entrusted goods to use are contrasted with the one cast out, for the five are to be increased to ten and those who withhold rather than use must answer and face retribution.
Digging to hide capital is to consume it or tie it in uncertain enterprises such as mining stock, a device of the enemy and snare of the last days that cripples the work for lack of soul-winning talent. The talents are the Lord's entrusted capital of means given to every man according to ability to be traded to win souls to Christ, and after a long time the lord reckons with his servants. The trader who gains other talents is called good and faithful, made ruler over many things, and enters the joy of his lord, while the fearful hider who fails to put money to the exchangers that it might return with usury is called wicked and slothful, has his talent taken and given to him which hath ten talents, for unto every one that hath shall be given abundance but from him that hath not shall be taken away even that which he hath.
Hiding temporal means while claiming it as one's own and saving no souls makes one unprofitable, for talents are not only ability to preach but money and possessions to be put out to usury in spreading truth by judicious effort. As judgment passes upon the house of God with angels keeping faithful record of every man's work, the sentence is recorded, the unfaithful are not spared but cut down at the time of slaughter, what was committed is taken, earthly treasure is swept away, and all is lost. The crowns they might have worn had they been faithful are put upon the heads of faithful servants whose means were constantly in use for God, and every soul they were the means of saving adds stars to crowns and increases eternal reward.
Professed servants are entrusted with Christ's own capital of talents of influence and money purchased by His sufferings and blood, not their own for pleasure, and are responsible for its use or abuse. Burying those talents in the earth and letting them lie dormant by withholding them from His cause and glory leaves them unprofitable, and they will be condemned when the Master comes to reckon and require His own with usury. Failure by ministers and people to improve larger talents, including failure to speak to thousands and encourage scattered believers by advancing and contributing reports of meetings and matters of interest, is withholding from God what is His.
Money, property and goods lent by the soon-coming Lord must be promptly returned with increase, for right employment has eternal consequences and means helping His suffering institutions out of embarrassment without a day's or an hour's delay, even a small amount being accepted. Those in responsible positions are to set example by planning and working for their relief, and money so given is placed in the hands of Christ Himself in the person of His afflicted brethren, whereupon heavenly angels are commissioned to help in time of special need.
All money is the Lord's and no one has any of his own, because all have been bought with a price and are bound to enter the Redeemer's service, so everyone must give account and at the last great day God will ask what was done with what He entrusted. Spending His money in selfishness violates the trust, tying it up in personal investments or spending on selfish pleasures and show while fields lie unworked hinders His work and brings rebuke, and leaving resources unused instead of putting them to work in mission while opportunity lasts brings exclusion and judgment. Placing means where wasted, even on children, and permitting children to use money without thought of glorifying God leaves one not clear, for God has work for money to do in bringing truth to many in darkness who will in turn work for Him, and withholding even to please children is disobedience leaving the servant accountable.
Money, property and probation are talents to be traded wisely and put into circulation without delay and without slack hand to be put out to usury, not left idle or spent selfishly. Those bought with a price are not to bury means in land at advice of children or friends but spare it for the treasury to provide facilities where many learn truth, to build meetinghouses and establish sanitariums for physical and spiritual healing and schools like the schools of the prophets and missions that shine light and draw souls, so talents are found doubled at His coming. Money is a test of stewardship to be given faithfully while one can rather than waiting till it passes to another's hands, voice, influence and time also being gifts to win to Christ, and the great reckoning will reveal what was done, with each rewarded according to works.
Things of this life are talents committed in trust to be improved and returned, with the tenth of all increase required as the very least and claimed as God's own. Withholding the tenth robs God and defrauds the Creator, and all withheld is recorded in heaven as robbery and embezzlement of property entrusted to be returned to the lender. Merely changing course and beginning on the right principle does not correct the record, so repentance for unfaithful dealing and base ingratitude is required.
God has lent means to the wealthy and left them the work of using it in His cause as faithful stewards while they live, not leaving it for children to do, so when the Master calls they can render both principal and interest. The servant's fear that his lord would benefit exposes unwillingness to use what was entrusted, and those who withhold from the cause or give grudgingly remain accountable until they return it, for transferring property to wife or children does not remove responsibility. Covetous keepers who defer giving until death have not multiplied what was entrusted and will receive no commendation or reward, and shifting responsibility to let children squander or hoard is unfaithfulness for which account must be given.
While parents have sound minds and good judgment they are to dispose of property with prayer and counsel of experienced godly counselors, for property is talents entrusted to use to God's glory and children do not automatically become responsible for the father's talents. Giving means to unbelieving children who already have abundance and serve the world merely because they are children is sin against the Master and lightly regards His claims, while afflicted or poor children who will use means judiciously may be considered. Making a will does not release from giving while living, but faithful stewardship requires disposing of surplus alive to advance the cause and vineyard, bringing satisfaction now and reward hereafter.
Wrapping the talent in a napkin and hiding it in the earth is a man about to change stewardship at life's close placing the Lord's money of money and property lent for wise improvement in hands of wicked relatives with no love for God or regard for truth, where it passes into Satan's ranks instead of flowing into the treasury. This robs God's treasury and brings fearful loss to giver and cause, so Christian brethren have duty as sacred as preaching to save souls to speak to aged and invalids and secure right disposition of the Lord's money. The unprofitable servant is the believer who near probation's close appropriates God's property so not one dollar flows to the treasury but passes to Satan's ranks by bequest to children and grandchildren without love for God or truth, to unconsecrated hands serving Satan, or by loose wills that will not stand law, though property and money are only lent to be returned and sustain His work by exercised intellect securing His own to His cause.
Misappropriating goods by sending means into enemy lines or managing without guardedness, including putting money into buildings to make money, tying it in business or worldly enterprises, or selfishly using and absorbing everything received, brings loss to the steward with no blessing, no reward, and possible loss of every dollar. The one-talent servants who kept means tied in buildings instead of putting it to work show lack of faith working by love that would invest diligently to bring returns by winning souls, and following human judgment and unconsecrated counsel with unsanctified wisdom that produces no facilities for the byways and highways must answer for unfaithful stewardship under close scrutiny talent by talent, name by name. Faithful use advances God's work and lays treasure in heaven, for entrusted money and property are to be invested to bring proper returns.
Embezzling the treasury, appropriating what belongs to God's cause, borrowing without planning to repay, acting dishonestly or recklessly, and failing to change under sanctifying truth denies Christ in action, misrepresents truth, and writes one in heaven as unfaithful. Life, health, reasoning powers, physical and mental strength, time, talents and money are the Lord's goods to be traded wisely and employed faithfully to His glory, with every person to give account and a heavenly record kept of all done.
Burying houses, lands, money and every ability lent according to several ability brings loss and Satan's snares, for refusing the trust of work and stewardship given through atoning power to believer and unbeliever as the Lord's property does not end stewardship. Burying is unfaithful dishonorable stewardship placing influence on Satan's side, and all influence for good that cooperation could have exerted, all improvement talents would have made, and all good left undone will be charged against the one weighed and found wanting without excuse. Not burying is enquiring of God and watching for opportunities to do good with His money, advancing His cause and saving souls without counting cost since one soul outweighs a world, with even the single talent needed in God-appointed place and channels of benevolence flowing to handicapped missions, untilled vineyard portions, and debt-burdened meetinghouses by clearing old debt, building free from debt, and disposing of means while living and beginning personal work where an important field is seen.
Talents of means, houses and lands are entrusted to those waiting for the soon coming to be answered for before the great white throne, and hoarding or locking up in houses, lands and costly furniture makes one the unprofitable servant who cannot meet the Lord in peace, for the heart is where treasure is. Now is time to sell unneeded houses and lands, give alms, provide unfailing heavenly treasure, and invest in advancing work especially in establishing the Southern field.
Using money in saving souls lays treasure in heaven, and faithfulness is trading upon entrusted talents by setting means in circulation for saving souls. Stewards with means must loan and give to advance work where poor and bound for lack of funds, to start school work and provide school building and meetinghouse and send preachers so souls can hear, with time short requiring utmost haste, and those so putting the Lord's means to work receive blessing.
Entrusted material means are to be used in useful labor and given to help others and advance God's work, not hoarded in worldly possessions, and neglect incurs guilt and answerability with future destiny affected by how one works with what Christ entrusted. Money is the Lord's talent to be applied where need is greatest such as giving to build a house for worship, kept ready wherever He has need including the work at Madison.
Talents lent must advantage His cause, requiring restricting wants, bringing tithes, gifts and offerings, and giving liberally to support workers near and afar and erect appropriate buildings in Washington, capital of the nation, that work be properly represented and truth go as a burning lamp with facilities for larger sphere. Withholding tithes and offerings in carelessness and indifference blocks truth from regions beyond, so every believer blessed with means must redeem honor by faithful tithe and gifts without delay to close the Washington Fund, or if impossible tell proper persons why and pay as soon as possible. Those with means must not spend for selfish pleasure but deny self, lift the cross, and give large or small according to ability to provide and free from debt a suitable worship house for witness, bringing blessing, harmony with beneficent gospel purposes, and deeper interest in the cause.
Money, facilities, intelligence, experience and power are God's talents to be traded and divided for needy vineyard parts, and the unprofitable unfaithful steward concentrates means and buildings in one favored place, neglects fields such as England and London, diverts means from rightful work, and manages in self-conceit and independence at cross-purposes with God. God marks this neglect, writes Unfaithful stewards against names, and calls to account for warnings and light not heeded. Where self-sacrifice established the cause and brought prosperity, believers are bound even at great self-denial to transfer portion or all once invested in them to servants beginning at the ABC in new fields, and this cheerful restitution from worked to unworked vineyard brings success, solidity, double strength, and power to proclaim the third angel's message and second appearing.
The talent of means includes money to be used now for advancing work as He claims present use, meeting urgent needs for educating young men, young women and older ones to work intelligently as missionaries, requiring churches to awake out of sleep to this responsibility. The Lord has means with stewards somewhere and now calls for it to be invested to carry work forward and enter new fields, so empty treasuries are to be laid before Him in prayer with more faith that He will supply great need.
God entrusts means to be wisely invested for His cause, and He is not pleased when selfish desires divert it to large expense merely to indulge selfish sectional interest. Using His means to build partition walls to separate interests and divide strength of sister conferences that should be closely united, instead of securing thoroughness and efficiency, is unfaithful stewardship bringing His displeasure.
God enriches His church with grace and entrusts her with means to supply His treasury and care for the needy, and faithful obedient stewards are rewarded and should tell His faithfulness with thanksgiving not murmuring. The barren vineyard portions needing care are suffering people in want and degradation to be noticed and relieved, and refusing entrusted goods for this work leaves fellow beings in bondage, insults God, lets Satan reproach Him for letting children suffer necessaries, and brings reproach on God.
God lends large talents of means as capital to be increased and invested in the brotherhood of humanity in turning men from sin to righteousness and seeking first kingdom and righteousness, recognizing every fallen man as purchased and ransomed by Christ's life and using facilities, opportunities and privileges to honor that value. Burying is passion to accumulate and retain power, buying wheat and goods to charge desired prices, robbing the poor, making their lot more trying, and becoming Satan's co-partner and abettor, and that selfish money-hoarding spirit brings the sentence to be cast into outer darkness.
Tact, skill, money and worldly treasure belong to Christ and are lent to cooperate in advancing gospel, relieving suffering, feeding hungry, clothing naked, and helping widow and fatherless. The unprofitable is a receiver but not producer who in luxury and desire to seem rich withholds Christ's money from the poor, robs Christ of glory, refuses to be blessing's channel, and is registered for oppression, double dealing and fraud. Such unfaithfulness forfeits recognition as faithful and forfeits heavenly treasure, makes the hoarder poorest, and brings God's dealing with unfaithful rebellious subjects in loss of soul though the whole world be gained.
Old believers must examine what they did with the talent of means and whether they returned what is His and did all required to advance His work. Faithfulness is placing money in new missionary fields to be worked, entering new places and lifting the standard where truth was never preached, and this active investment is for the giver's own eternal interest.
Those with great possessions must give account, and spending entrusted means on selfish luxury, harmful indulgence, pride, ambition and beautifying houses to glorify self instead of upbuilding the cause while people are destitute is unfaithful stewardship marked by God and angels. Money is talent entrusted by Christ who bought the steward with blood and prepared mansions and watches and records in a book how it is spent, so offering it lays heavenly treasure while display is nothing beside what God prepared for lovers of Him, requiring contrite humble spirit. God allows stewardship of money and reputation a little time to test fitness for the royal family, and the self-seeker not in harmony with His will and work who misapplies silver and gold through greed, covetousness and display, after abusing probation, settles serious account and receives rejection from God's kingdom.
God has made His people depository of sacred truth and committed talents for wise improvement, designing multiplication by constant use as living agents keeping light trimmed and burning to all contacts with hearts full of charity to help the more needy. Those prospered are to help brethren and sisters struggling under poverty and debt and churches needing financial help in proportion to prosperity, and institutional leaders seeing other institutions struggling for standing room are not to be jealous or push them out to exalt self but curtail large plans, avoid exhausting every dollar enlarging own responsibility, and reserve means to aid struggling enterprises and locate health institutions and limited schools where most beneficial. Those with sacred truth and responsibilities must honor it by seeking the Lord, purifying soul from commonness, putting away careless speech and deportment, cheapness and frivolity, becoming intelligent workers and wise counselors, and setting consecrated example to children, households and associates, for improving talents in tangible service advancing His name is the thanksgiving He requires alongside tongue and shining good works.
The talent of means is to be used in loans and gifts to place sanitariums in Southern California where they can work to God's honor without embarrassment and reach a class reachable no other way. Those entrusted should strengthen hands carrying medical missionary work and not leave them destitute, by loaning to institutions like Paradise Valley Sanitarium at low or no interest so thorough work is done to God's glory.
God-entrusted means must not be hoarded but used to help worthy students pursue studies and meet needs. Each servant must ask whether talents of means are used to best advantage for fellow men's salvation by deeper interest and labor in missionary fields.
Talents and supposed ability are given by God, not owned merit justifying disproportionate stipulated wages. Ministers, editors and conference presidents receiving large wages for talents misuse entrusted gift while debt rests on office and Conference, and God is now testing men over it. Those on high wages are to reduce, take smaller not higher, and set sacrifice and economy, while common workers receiving much less are not expected to reduce, for steady covetousness for higher wages is soul-plaguing idolatry to be purified and cut out root and branch.
Wealth is a talent to be used to open doors for truth and support missionary work including among people of means and influence. God-given abilities and resources must be improved, with every means and blessing used to advance His work and serve others rather than selfishly keeping gains, and intellect and means employed to advance work, help poor and needy, and establish city centers of influence. Entrusted means must be invested wisely and without partiality where it continues producing returns in God's service, not concentrated in proud undertaking for display, with the Lord expecting kindness and liberality not stinginess or exacting every cent.

Faithfulness in Every Calling

Every jot and tittle of human capability is lent in trust to be improved and required back with interest in sacred service to God's glory, and the slothful hider who complains God is hard and exacting robs God daily by withholding powers, so to escape his end one must cease planning only for self and walking where Christ does not lead, surrender self, follow Christ, and keep every thought, will and endowment under His control.
God is in truth a rich giver and provider who entrusts gifts according to each person's ability to use them, not a harsh judge and exacting creditor as the fearful servant supposes from anxious desire to benefit self, and instead of remaining only a consumer one is to trade upon His goods and put the gift out to the exchangers, to return fruit in season, relieve suffering humanity, and lay up good foundation for time to come.
The unprofitable represents those slothful in the work of everlasting life whose religious life bears no fruit, whose delayed resolves and self-justification do not prepare them for judgment, for profitability means bearing much fruit for His glory, helping others enter the King's service, and living so faithfully that others see transforming power, with divine grace changing nature and fruits of the Spirit appearing, without which form of godliness carries no weight; living for self dwarfs rather than develops, mind and muscles must be taxed to develop, shunners of work and responsibility are unfruitful trees who must render account for good they might have done and did not do.
People are accountable for improving talents, with faith, obedience and love to grow in keeping with light and grace received, and failure brings condemnation in proportion to grace and truth given, while faithful work brings increase and reward and loss follows neglect, and increase comes only through His grace so glory goes to God rather than merit, with lost opportunities mourned when too late.
Conversion of body, soul and spirit must lead to unfolding the napkin and trading with the Lord's goods to benefit others, gaining other talents, for to say from fear I hid thy talent brings the verdict wicked and slothful, since the money should have been put to the exchangers to receive His own with usury at His coming.

The servant was accountable though receiving only one, because what was needed to use gifts faithfully and increase knowledge and spiritual understanding had been provided, and merely returning the talent was not enough, for he failed to put it to use and to spend time, influence, abilities and powers in service including saving others, with neglect of Scripture and of practicing Christ's words showing faith without works.
Each person is accountable for entrusted gifts, and even the smallest gift can grow through use, with humble service reaching people greater gifts cannot, so one small talent faithfully used in house-to-house service may do more than brilliant gifts, and the one-talent servant has real work as verily as the five-talent servant and must labor all the more earnestly, trading wisely to be given ability for larger number, with humility and faithful work encouraging others while God exalts the humble to higher service and richer, holier life.
People must answer for time, abilities and possessions as entrusted, not their own, with wisdom alone from God to use them for His purposes, and the command is to make the most of abilities.
Knowledge and abilities must be faithfully used not hidden away, even small talents put to work, for abuse or failure brings judgment and punishment, while faithful unselfish use in present opportunity for God's glory and salvation and relief of others brings recompense and joy at harvest, before probation ends and account is fixed.
God demands unreserved consecration of body and soul with all energies and capabilities throughout probation, every talent small or great to be improved according to the Giver's will and design with greater obligation where more is entrusted, holding rightful dominion and claiming all service mortal aided by grace can render so withholding is robbery, while gold, silver and largest property are His and avail nothing in judgment and cannot ransom a soul, and only the cross secures excellence with heart wrapped in Christ securing eternal treasure; ability and wisdom prove whether gifts are rightly used, not to be trusted or exalted as one's own, and omitting heaven from business, making religion subservient to world, and putting selfish perishing treasure first misuses trust, so worshipers must subordinate world to religion, renounce self-trust, come as little children and connect with Christ without whom no work succeeds, becoming truly converted channels of light and blessing rather than form with machinery destitute of grace; man with all talents belongs to the one Proprietor, gifts lent on trial to be kept pure for magnifying Creator, sacred work to be done hidden in Christ by the Spirit in humility inquiring Is this the way of the Lord, not trusting self through years as president or adviser till wisdom becomes foolishness, planning showy projects of own mind with strange fire, misusing gifts to place brethren in hard places or lead souls to Satan's battleground bringing discouragement, confusion and stumbling and the condemnation of the unprofitable.

God gives talents of ability to be traded by working in His vineyard, and the unprofitable stands idle in the marketplace instead, with trading learned only by actual missionary work calling men to the supper because all is ready, in home work in cities, towns, highways, hedges and dark parts of earth, apportioning vineyard to idle men and setting them to work again when they blunder rather than hindering, for detaining workers for advanced education while souls are lost and work undone is miscalculation and waste, while improvers where they are are blessed with God-sent teachers and cooperation of heavenly intelligences, and seekers of education at expense of practical godliness are on the losing side.
The unprofitable represents those who know Bible truth but do not practice it, for nominal acceptance without faithful service including seeking and saving the lost does not make true servants, and those using abilities for self and refusing spiritual responsibility indulge self, fail to form Christlike character, reveal by daily choice life without grace, and separate from Him.
People are accountable for privileges and abilities and must render exact individual account of use, with daily choices adding to it and carelessness not removing responsibility, for life and abilities are sacred trust with no excuse for reasoning beings neglecting to return God's own, to be exercised and increased through blessing others.
Possessing talents is not enough, they must be kept in use, for affectionate and generous qualities left unemployed are unfaithfulness, since such gifts are meant to help the needy and advance saving work, and faithful use benefits worker and served and develops greater capacity, while hiding instead of investing withholds abilities from God's work.
Talents must be cultivated and used intelligently for His glory, and the Spirit's guidance does not remove duty to exercise and improve them.

Hiding God-given gifts in the world rather than consecrating them to make Christ known and minister to others is the unfaithful steward's failure leading to judgment, belonging to every believer not ministers only, for buried talent unimproved is cast out, neglect is unfaithfulness, and entrusted abilities and resources must be used to spread truth bringing increase as those reached reach others, with diligent pointed trading creating strong influence for truth as stewardship of grace bought by blood for eternal life.
Neglecting talents and failing to make best use is backsliding from God calling for confession with weeping and heart softened and subdued by His Spirit, since every human is obligated to improve talents by use and thus gain others to render to the Giver.
The man who hid his talent to preserve it lost all because he did not trade, so everyone is to make best use here, bringing gems of truth such as justification by faith and Christ's righteousness into character and putting them out to exchangers instead of burying all in business and money-making and earthly treasure, for the one-talent man has work and burying influence and ability brings account with even ability taken away.
Those ever needing help and nursing while opportunities crowd upon them yet making no use of what they have receive no lasting impression and remain ever learning never coming to knowledge of truth, advancing only when going to work to trade on goods already entrusted, which means becoming channels diffusing received light with increased light given, driven by opposition to Word and wrestling prayer that is heard; the Lord's goods are heavenly precious truths of Word displayed to win all classes, requiring meek childlike learning with wisdom and ingenious prayerful planning to reach souls including intelligent, refined, fashionable, wealthy and proud who find money and edifices and furniture do not give happiness and perish longing for rest, needing Jesus the Light of righteousness.
The unprofitable is the professed believer who neglects watching, praying and depending on God as counselor, becomes self-sufficient walking in own imagination, fails to improve or improves carelessly, disqualifying himself from his field, responsible for all he might have done and did not do, for grieving Spirit, souls lost, and evil by conscious or unconscious influence, preparing for second death unless seeing, confessing, warning others in danger, and if continuing in indifference, carelessness, disobedience, unthankfulness and unholiness charged as defaulter for whole amount not diligently employed, to perish without repentance toward God and faith toward Christ with all neglected faithful work charged and no excuse releasing him as watchman; he is careless, indifferent, feeling no burden to keep soul in love of God, wanting integrity, failing to grow, giving little to treasury and missions, like foolish virgins empty of oil letting light flicker out, while the profitable sinks empty vessel into fullness of love with Christ as well springing to everlasting life, angels ministering and increasing ability; burying is persistent self-indulgence refusing to exercise abilities, every gift according to ability to be gratefully improved for saving souls and God's glory with use increasing and neglect losing; burying sacred light and truth is living to serve, please and glorify self instead of presenting truth, building kingdom, raising perishing and seeking lost while men die without light and pardon, belonging to every Christian young or old rich or poor forgiven and freed, bringing slothful verdict not Well done; hiding means centering all capability, thought and burden on poor self which made him afraid, mere profession not saving for devils believe and tremble, requiring work at nearest burdens with God building life for time and eternity, molding influence, solid timbers, right disposition, putting away fractious temper, for without daily grace for character no place in kingdom; the unprofitable does not trade to gain others by compassion and love but uses talents for selfish lifting, enrichment and honor, enthroning self instead of making God's will his, and though exalted beside princes is unclean, having sold birthright, weighed in sanctuary balances and found wanting.

Property, money, time, strength and every capability are lent not owned, to be used for God in truth and righteousness, and hiding means underrating them, leaving one, two and five out of reckoning, absorbing gifts in worldly pursuits, neglecting duty and failing to advance work, while even smallest wisely used matters because one soul won may win others so one improved becomes many, rich and poor to awake for account of gain by trading with destiny decided day by day and hour by hour and reward proportionate to piety, earnestness and unselfishness.
Those refusing service and failing to return what is entrusted are unfaithful stewards losing blessing of what was given, applying to those not giving self to work, using gifts for self and neglecting required return.
Safety comes through daily consecration, dying to self and living new life to God who loves the steward and wants no failure, taking up appointed work with trustful happy mind and understanding how, beginning to trade on very first endowment by putting goods out to exchangers, calling attention to their value, presenting truth by precept and example, seeking wisdom daily, searching Scriptures, working in copartnership where Lord educates and develops executive ability, for servants must learn to trade before accumulating more; even one traded gains another and increase multiplies, none too unqualified for qualification comes by going to work with what he has and improving with determination in whatever line with humble duties bringing honor; waiting instead of using makes unprofitable so Master sees no profit in bestowing most precious material, while beginning at once makes gospel power and wisdom, ministry in life making living epistle with constant transformation to Christ's character by Spirit with deepest sense of weakness casting helpless soul on Christ in contrite humility where God dwells to revive.
Faithful stewardship is gratefully using every gift to save souls by nearest work, circulating light and laboring for neighbors with strength growing by service, for burying is self-indulgence refusing exercise, every gift according to ability to be improved for saving and glory with use increasing and neglect losing; talents are Lord's goods, wages of sufferings and price of blood loaned to secure willing servitude, faithful putting means into circulation freely, unselfishly, cheerfully to work barren fields into fruitful trees of righteousness through knowledge of Word; hiding gains nothing, servants to make best use obeying God and carrying truth; burying sacred light is self-serving instead of presenting truth and seeking lost, not ministers only but every forgiven Christian, bringing slothful verdict not Well done; abilities and influence entrusted must be returned, well used enlarging work and bringing others to Christ; life is costly gift purchased by sacrifice requiring account, exercise and increase, not neglect.
The warning belongs not to ministers only but to every Christian young or old rich or poor forgiven and freed, including all responsible agents humblest poorest to those with means and intellect, each given work proportionate to capability, even least faithfully used receiving Well done with reward eternal life and joy of Lord; small ability must be put to usury from love, even ignorant humble with overflowing love appealing to one out of Christ not despised, effort from love noticed in heaven and small cheerful offering blessed as widow's mite; church likewise accountable to let light benefit others; young's fresh vigor must not lie idle but be enlisted as soldiers gathering talents to exchangers, breaking barriers with sympathy working with Jesus, partaking divine nature, presenting Christ friend of sinners to leave evil ranks, with less sermonizing and more personal labor gathering fresh manna so each has portion; all with light called to decided vigilant service in vineyard, active virtues showing truth's saving power, responsibility not on priests alone but to every man from lowliest obscure to highest influential, diligent use great or small bringing returns as Lord's portion expected from vineyard.

Those feeling secure must examine standing and put abilities to work especially to save others, for leaving talents unused serving self brings judgment, and burying rather than using makes accountable even for those who have not heard; every person endowed with faculties not merely for livelihood in corn and wheat but for earnest persevering soul-saving bearing much fruit to glorify Father, each a living stone shining in good works doing nearest humble work, circulating truth, holding meetings, laboring for neighbors, receiving more grace and strength by using what is had, while refusing opened doors cripples work and like men of Meroz falls under condemnation as idle do-nothing.
