Jesus Speaking With His Disciples Around a Low Tableby MuzFamily

Matthew 26:20

Now when the even was come, he sat down with the twelve.

The evening had come when he sat down with the twelve to eat the Passover supper. He stood at the transition from the old system of types and ceremonies to the new, as the spotless Lamb of God about to offer himself as a sin offering. In that same meal he established the Lord's Supper to take the place of the Passover as a memorial of his sacrifice, to be kept by his followers in every land and in every age.

After the supper he went out with them to the garden of Gethsemane, where he often went to pray. As he walked with them he talked with them and taught them, but as they drew near the garden he became strangely silent.

Judas was present at that evening meal and was allowed to share in the sacrament even though it was known he would betray him. The faults of the disciples were the reason their feet were washed at that time, and all except Judas were led to repentance. Such dealing with Judas shows patient giving of opportunity to sinners to receive him, to repent, and to be cleansed from sin. It teaches not to withdraw care from one thought to be in error, since careless separation can leave that person exposed to temptation.
