And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:
The verse identifies faithful followers from Galilee, specifically women, who had accompanied Jesus from Galilee while ministering to Him and serving Him, and who followed Him all the way to Calvary to witness His death. They beheld the crucifixion from afar off, watching from a distance, and they stayed last at the cross watching. Mary was among those women who stayed near Jesus at the cross.
Their hope that Jesus would reign as an earthly king ended in grief at His death, but His resurrection renewed their hope. After the cross they drew near at His burial to see that all that could be done for His lifeless form was done and saw the heavy stone rolled against the entrance of the sepulcher. As Mary Magdalene and the other Marys lingered about the sacred resting place while the evening shades gathered, shedding tears of sorrow over Him whom they loved, they were last at the tomb as they had been last at the cross.
Mary's closeness to Jesus followed His deliverance of her from demonic control, when He rebuked the demons, and through His grace she overcame and became His disciple. She then learned at His feet, anointed Him, followed Him to the tomb, and became the first to proclaim His resurrection.
