Two Night Watchmen Carry Lanterns Down a StreetBible World

Matthew 5:16

Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Christ commands His followers to let their light shine openly before others through visible good deeds so that onlookers glorify the Father in heaven, like a city on a hill that cannot be hidden and a lamp set on a stand to give light to the whole house rather than covered under a basket.
The light is not their own but heaven's light received from Christ the Sun of Righteousness and reflected as the moon reflects the sun, kept burning only by vital connection with Him through love supplied as golden oil.
The good works that shine are the practical living of God's law in obedience including the commandments and the Sabbath, in mercy that feeds the hungry and lifts the bowed down, made possible only by repentance and conversion that change the character.
This charge rests on every believer and not on ministers only, beginning first in the home to brighten the path for children and then extending through the church as God's appointed light-bearer to cities and to the darkest places of earth.
True shining is humble and cheerful, keeping self out of sight to point to Christ and bringing happiness and strength to others, while hiding the light through fear of disapproval, conformity to the world, love of money, or inconsistent temper and conduct leaves others in darkness and misrepresents God.

Words Images and Setting

The command is to let light shine openly before people through visible good works, so that observers glorify the Father in heaven. The images are a city set on a hill that cannot be hid, and a lamp set on a stand to give light to all in the house and not hidden under a bushel or basket. The shining is reflection of heaven's light through the life to dispel the moral darkness of a world in sin, directing sinners' minds to God and awakening high views of the purity of the Christian religion. Godly life and holy conduct are a daily witness against sin, and the light-bearer must present Christ and not self, faithfully representing Him whom the penitent receives with righteousness and kindled divine love in the heart. Correct examples and good deeds draw people to righteousness and make truth attractive, while defective character obscures truth and turns people away, and influence must be made visible and not limited or hidden, since neglecting public witness can leave souls lost.

The light is not the believer's own but heaven's light from Christ the Sun of Righteousness, reflected as the moon reflects the sun, received through connection with Him. Becoming lights means giving a proper representation of God's character as obedient sons and daughters wearing the great Teacher's yoke and learning His meekness and lowliness, with Christ's presence and righteousness going before the pilgrim and God as rereward behind, so the traveler is not left to walk in darkness but follows Jesus on a clear path in the sunshine of His presence as Christ is in the light. Constantly receiving that light, the traveler combines faith with earnest endeavor to win others, reflecting light in encouraging words and self-denying deeds and bearing the sign of obedience to God's law that distinguishes him from those not on the way to eternal life, knowing Christ personally and walking humbly with God with His mind. Shining requires well-developed harmonious character that directs sinners to God as salt of the earth, with spiritual life from coming to God for light so His virtues replace selfishness with visible goodness, meekness and humility, and with patient forbearance under provocation that makes believers a wonder and blessing revealing true piety. There is no command to strive to shine but to let the God-given gift shine in clear rays by removing obstructions like ill-advised words, impatient spirit, murmuring and complaining, and the good works to be seen are works of mercy such as loosing wickedness, undoing burdens, freeing the oppressed, breaking yokes, feeding the hungry, housing the outcast poor and clothing the naked, whereupon glory shines forth and light breaks as morning and rises in obscurity within the range of influence. That light should shine first in the home brightening the path for children and then extend beyond as witness to the world.

The verse belongs to Christ's teaching on the mountain in Matthew 5 with His conflicts and victories in Matthew 4 and lessons in chapters four to seven. It was spoken in the morning while the sun flooded hill towns, given to disciples while the multitude heard. It sets out kingdom principles of grace and corrects false ideas of worldly greatness. Its teachings are to be understood and practiced in every place where the work is established, with the character they form visible in service, reaching everyone within influence and giving the world all possible light. Humble consistent life must shine clearly and not be hidden or withheld for worldly influence, discouragement, fear, reproach or persecution, but stand faithfully at duty bringing light into moral darkness, with Bible knowledge, watchfulness, prayer and faithful teaching removing prejudice and converting from error to obey truth.

Shining is joined to fulfilling and not destroying the law and prophets, keeping even the least commandments including the seventh-day Sabbath. It calls for righteousness exceeding scribes and Pharisees, with obedience making light shine clearly and reflecting God's love bringing happiness. The word so means true shining only from the Sun's beams in love and not sparks of one's own kindling or rigid bigotry, holding firmly unshaken to truth and loving God with heart mind soul and strength. This shining is possible only by Christ's power energizing the soul, sought in prayer for His love in the heart to impart to others, requiring overcoming pride and self-indulgence, without which there is no entrance home. The charge rests on everyone who trusts and loves Christ as a blessed promise, each accountable with a part to do, with outward conduct including neatness in dress agreeing with professed truth to strengthen influence.

The light to shine is the old light of Jehovah's law in the new setting of the gospel reaching the mind. It is the Word of God received and practiced so its most sublime truths appear in life and character with new birth shown in speech and action, brought from under the bushel of human conjecture to make known the gospel of life. It is God's glory which is His character implanted by the Holy Spirit, made visible when believers behold Jesus and are changed into His image in redeemed human nature as Christ obeyed though tempted yet without sin. Shining means full surrender on accepting God's gift, a Spirit-filled life, a heart rejoicing in truth, obedience to divine requirements, holding truth as in Jesus in simplicity, and refusing to strengthen evil will by repeated wrongs hardening into habit, instead receiving divine power to partake of divine nature with life hid with Christ divested of selfishness. It is grace in the soul flowing out to others in good works and willing offerings, increasing as it flows, expressed by remaining among men as laborers together with God and a savor of life, not withdrawing or wrapping in Pharisaical robes nor needlessly stirring anger or combat, serving to help and save souls rich and poor since every soul has influence bought with blood.

God designed Israel to shed light on surrounding peoples rather than keep favor exclusive. Hiding comes from following heathen practices or proud exclusiveness, while bringing heaven's light and glory into service places religion on the high plane set by the Bible and leaves a bright track for seekers. In every age lights included Enoch, Noah, Abraham, Joseph in Egypt, Moses, faithful Israelites, Daniel and companions in Babylon, Mordecai and Ezra and Nehemiah in Persia. Practicing truth in word and deed makes believers witnesses and channels of light, with daily conversion and removal of hindering habits, keeping a distinct line between righteousness and sin and obedience and disobedience. Misrepresenting Him is a sad contradiction, while reflecting His glory, opposing intemperance and spirituous liquor, opposing evil and giving youth a worthy example free from coarseness and sensualism, lets conduct teach toward life and lets good works lead others to glorify God.

Source and Supply of Light

Believers have no light in themselves and cannot fill themselves, but shine only as they reflect heaven's light through vital connection with its Source, constantly replenished with golden oil which is God's love flowing through the two golden pipes. The tiniest lamp kept supplied is more valuable than a large flashing lamp that burns brightly for a time and then sputters out, because steady supply matters more than size or show. The command lays a solemn obligation on every person, and especially on teachers, ministers and leaders, to be light-bearers whose unselfish faithful service makes God's goodness visible and leads beholders to glorify the Father in heaven rather than themselves. This requires waking from spiritual sleep, turning from frivolity to seek the way to heaven, refusing to strengthen an evil will by repeating wrong acts until they become habit acting and reacting upon mind and heart, and instead receiving divine power to partake of the divine nature with a life hid with Christ in God and divested of selfishness. It means not withdrawing into Pharisaical separation but remaining among men as laborers together with God, living a daily-converted, Spirit-filled life with a heart rejoicing in truth, obeying divine requirements, holding truth as it is in Jesus in simplicity, and helping save souls including the poor and uninfluential, with even a physician's use of means and charges giving this evidence.

Christ does not call followers to strive to make light shine but to let the God-given gift shine in clear rays, for where He dwells in the heart the light of His presence cannot be concealed. Obstructions must be removed, such as ill-advised words, murmuring, and using influence to criticize God's servant, which spreads harm instead of blessing. The rays shine clear in good works of mercy such as feeding the hungry and housing the poor, whereupon light breaks forth as the morning, and in preserving physical powers through obedience to health laws so service is acceptable and promotes spiritual as well as physical life. This is a duty of personal witness belonging to every enlightened follower and not to ordained ministers only, consecrating believers as living channels who mingle with worldlings to do them all possible good as Christ ate with publicans and sinners, opening themes that bring eternal interests to mind while coming out separate and refusing identity with unbelief in its plans.

Those who walk in the light received are given greater light and strength, and sharing increases light and brings fresh grace with angels cooperating, while refusing to share brings guilt and light withheld until what was received is used. One lamp can light many candles from taper to taper, as the truths of the Sermon on the Mount have shone through the ages amid error giving a sure foundation for faith and practice. Letting light shine is God's ambassadors bearing to those in darkness the light Christ communicates, infusing light to the understanding and warmth to the soul, pictured by the rising sun gilding the mountains of Judah and by dawn breaking out of darkness on the first day of creation. By its bright beams they dispel superstition, error and tradition and usher in truth and righteousness, bringing the disobedient back to allegiance to God's law, for all true goodness and greatness of character and all peace and joy of soul come through perfect submission to the Father's will. The light is the heavenly light of God's presence and the divine nature shared by Christians, to show God's praise, benefit society and lead souls to salvation, seen in humility, purity, meekness, forbearance and faithfulness that give a clear trustworthy example rather than following a human leader.

Followers are more than a light among men; they are the light of the world, Heaven's appointed channels for revealing Christ as Christ revealed the Father. As the Father sent Christ, so Christ sends them, and while Christ is the great Source of illumination He is revealed through humanity, with God's blessings coming through human instrumentality and humanity united to divinity needing to touch humanity. God ordained disciples to carry His light to all parts rather than writing truth on the firmament or proclaiming it by angel visitors, and angels of glory wait to communicate heaven's light and power through them to perishing souls, so that when the human agent fails the world is robbed of the promised influence of the Holy Spirit. Where those professing to follow are not the light, it is because vital power has left and connection with the Source is broken. This shining approves no striving for display or self-satisfied attempt to show superior goodness, but appears as souls imbued with heaven's principles reveal inward light in contact with the world, in homes and dealings with unbelievers, in business and even mechanical lines with exactness, skill, tact, wisdom and perfection as in the tabernacle, every transaction as pure as gold and frankincense and myrrh, with honesty, uprightness and steadfast fidelity as the means of illumination leading neighbors to glorify God who gave His Son for everlasting life.

The command rests on every believer and not on ministers only, each soul bearing individual responsibility to use entrusted gifts and talents as a steward accountable to God for His glory rather than self-pleasing. Even a small light must shine steadily and not for self-glory, for Christ dwelling by His Spirit cannot be hidden or kept for self, and as selfishness and sin are cleared away the light grows brighter. Even poor, uneducated and obscure believers can bless others through prayer and opening the Bible without a pulpit, and faithful use of ability without waiting for exceptional opportunities can make life a living testimony whose influence grows while connection with God remains. Teachers must let heaven's true light shine before pupils in life and action with a higher purer spirit than the world's, practicing righteousness and making clear the distinction between righteous and unrighteous, godly and ungodly, obedient and disobedient, lest false light lead pupils to ruin. Walking in the light means remembering God and rightly representing Christ in every place, journeying and among relatives, blending profession with thoughts, feelings, words and actions, feeling Christ's love, caring for contacts, speaking words that turn minds to eternal interests, sowing truth, ministering as Christ did in obedience, benevolence and service, upholding God's law and sharing blessings rather than living for self.

Shining requires full surrender with self crucified and hidden and Christ appearing as all in all, putting on the new man in righteousness, being emptied of self and supplied with oil. Every good work is wrought through the Holy Spirit given to glorify the Giver not the receiver, so when Christ's light shines in the soul the lips overflow with praise and thanksgiving and prayers, duty, benevolence and self-denial are not made the theme of thought or conversation. Light shines rightly only from a corrected character and a mind like Christ's in meekness and self-denial, with truth cherished in the heart and shown in words and deeds; without this, others see the supposed light as darkness and turn away, so self must die and the person become teachable. This includes overcoming pride and self-indulgence, living by faith working by love that purifies hereditary faults, meeting regularly for instruction, song, prayer and mutual encouragement with unbelievers sometimes present, and maintaining courteous, truthful, kind, benevolent conduct with neat modest orderly dress and care for worship rather than careless slovenly habits, coarse conduct or display, which weaken saving influence against the world's corruption.

Nature of Good Works

Good works are the spirit of God's law lived out in practice, not mere outward forms, including doing and teaching the commandments and honoring the Sabbath as the sign of sanctification, obeying as Jesus obeyed, and performing merciful deeds that lift the bowed down, comfort mourners, and restrain evil by kind, selfless action. Letting light shine means making present truth visible so that observers glorify God, keeping in touch with those who hold some truths but are not firmly grounded in others, and living unto God decidedly and determinedly with an example that draws others to consecration. It is shining amid moral darkness in contrast with error, not displaying self, while maintaining good works, seeking to save the perishing, preaching the gospel as a witness to all nations, and growing progressively in faith, virtue, knowledge, self-control, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness, and love unto fruitfulness in knowing Christ. Each believer is to share received light in the surrounding community and, as part of the church, carry it beyond, laboring together with Christ in saving the world. Like a city on a hill that cannot be hid, as Saphet set in full sight catching the morning sun and flashing back evening glory from its battlements, a Bible Christian is the world's light, a person of principle, sober, watchful, prayerful, full of faith and good works, firm, established, strengthened and settled, not seeking the prominence of the hill. Such shining requires a sound conscience to do Christ's works, consistent holy living by much prayer and watching unto prayer, self-denial, lifting the cross and following His footsteps, walking with God and not with Satan, so that the life becomes the only Bible many can read, made visible in words and actions by calling on people, studying Scripture with them, and praying with them, as especially needed amid wickedness and crime such as in San Francisco after its destruction by fire.

Good works shine only when repentance and conversion change the character and make grace visible, for mere profession or having a name on a roll is insufficient. This includes putting away unbelief, daily conversion, removing hindering habits, and becoming new and noble persons drawing strength from Christ. Believers are to live humbly and carefully so their conduct shines, with kindness, love, compassion, and unity toward one another giving the world reason to recognize Jesus as the Son of God, and with welcoming His light transforming them into representatives of Christ and witnesses of the Spirit's power. They are to give light to neighbors and perishing souls around them, awake to responsibility with tender hearts touched and softened by the Holy Spirit, the church put in order to labor for souls, carrying light by firm purpose, resisting evil companions, and seeking to reform, reclaim, and rescue others from evil. God desires His people to be light-bearers to a world in midnight darkness by ever keeping His perfect standard high above Satan's false standard in precept and example and advancing in the light on their pathway, for refusing to advance turns light to darkness and leaves them lost in surrounding blackness, while holding God's standard high leads to life and following Satan's leads to misery, degradation, disease, and death of body and soul. Churches built in new places are to serve as centers of light amid darkness to make truth known and bring glory to God.

Good works must lead people to glorify God and not the doer, done humbly without seeking praise or distinction, with self out of sight and Christ's excellence revealed. Work corrupted by selfishness is made pure through conversion and offered in righteousness through the Spirit. Shining is not merely living an exemplary life passively but working aggressively for those in darkness without knowledge of the truth, walking carefully to recommend truth, taking up duties directly in the pathway in order in the fear and love of God, doing to the very best of ability the work given to each, with no right to study own pleasure and convenience, and following up labor with prayer for God to prosper it. The light received lays responsibility to let it shine so others glorify God, which requires standing on the elevated position according with sacred truth professed, practicing what is learned, doing truth in a solemn time amid last-day perils, and faithfully using entrusted talents. Conduct must be visible to lead others to glorify God, so that going to the theater or ballroom undermines witness since even outsiders see it as inconsistent with Christian profession, while self-denial, self-sacrifice, and good works make Bible religion appear worthy or, if lacking, bring it into disrepute. God desires lives to show the advantage of Christianity over worldliness and to reveal that truth has made them children of the heavenly King through whom He pours love and mercy, with faithful good conduct in every occupation, business and daily tasks done in Christ's spirit as service to God for building His kingdom, as at camp meetings where those seeking God and standing wholly on His side are this light to the people.

Letting light shine gives true happiness to doers and strength to others, brings joy to the heavenly family, and requires cheerfulness, hope, and praise rather than gloom, complaint, and distrust which misrepresent God. Pleasant words bring brightness into the home and lift the discouraged. Followers must walk in the light at any cost and trust God to give opportunity to display good works so souls are won even in most unpromising and dangerous fields, as servants amid fiercest temptations, hindrances, and bitter opposition in Nero's court, rebuking slothfulness and unbelief that excuse neglect where favorable results cannot be seen and forbidding limiting God's plans by short-sighted human judgment. A believer's light is piety, goodness, truth, mercy, and love revealed in character and life, with good works making it visible and giving the gospel influence so that each shines and serves to show God's praises. The Holy Spirit uses God's word to transform receivers so their good works reveal the light of God's glory and honor Him, like lamps of wise virgins shining in darkness to show the way to the Bridegroom's home and the marriage supper of the Lamb. The Lord's true children shine as lights in a dark world as they patiently bear hardship and comfort the hopeless and sin-stricken, many poor, afflicted, and little known to churches or ministers yet under His special care, making good works visible where they live through practical kindness, helpfulness, courtesy, and faithful Christian living at home and in the neighborhood amid moral darkness, as Waldensian missionaries did by carrying Scripture to free others from Rome's bondage.

Shining means Christlike character without seeking notice, with His peace ruling within as gracious radiance of humility, kindness, and love that blesses and builds up. The truest bearers are least conscious of it, like the sweetest flowers, and patient forbearance under provocation reveals true piety. Letting light shine is religion shining out in good works from heartfelt piety, emitting a clear, sure, safe light, whereas religious manifestations not from heartfelt piety are utterly powerless for good. This requires strong faith, consistent zeal, fervent prayer, and faithful incessant admonition against all wrong because the Christian is responsible for others' salvation, to be taught in home and church. God gives spiritual light not for one alone but to be shared through useful work to His glory, passing it on lest it grow dim amid moral darkness and further light be withheld until what was received is used, for truth's power to reach others depends on cooperation with God through godly lives, zeal, and unselfish effort. A life of good works thus shines to lead others to glorify the Father, whether through small sanitariums properly conducted as lights in dark places reflecting Christ to reach souls, through leaving convenience and financial advantage to do missionary work and establish centers of influence in large cities and train workers beyond familiar churches, or through believers united as a church as a light strengthening one another in love and sympathy and working together with God under the Holy Spirit in faith and prayer to win people to Christ.

Correct example makes truth attractive while defective character obscures it, and exemplary deeds serve as beacons directing to safety. A life shaped by truth witnesses more powerfully than sermons or arguments and leads others to desire the righteousness that bears such fruit. A life shaped by Christ's spirit and image lets light shine through good works, leading others, even an unbelieving husband, to obey God's commandments, as living and showing love for the truth exerts good influence. God uses consecrated Christians as channels of light when they cooperate with Him, with shining as consistent religious life, holy speech, stern unswerving fidelity to truth and uprightness, active benevolence, and godly example impressing unbelievers and giving light in others' dark pathway. When people see good works and the change from sin to holiness they may recognize Christ's grace and glorify the Father, for disciples as Christ's witnesses bound by baptismal vow become one in Him through His merits and righteousness and let light shine by bringing truth into all works, being sanctified through truth, living separate from the world as heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, showing as a holy nation, peculiar people, and chosen generation zealous of good works to a world dead in trespasses that they are sojourners seeking a better heavenly country and believe in Christ's soon coming in power and great glory. God has committed knowledge of truth to fit His people to be light-bearers, not to quarrel over it, shining by a life filled with good works and by work in meekness and faith to persuade those for whom Christ died to accept precious truth, sowing seeds that bring forth fruit unto righteousness with returns required according to ability given. Believers stay in the world and shine as stars amid moral darkness so souls come to the light and glorify God, following Jesus who associated and ate with publicans and sinners not to become one with them in word or spirit but to sow truth, enlighten them, and make them one with Him, which requires Bible study, conversion, being divested of self, meekness and lowliness of heart, and breaking with associates in secret societies, that the converted may then enlighten others.

Church and Every Believer

The church together is appointed as God's light-bearer amid a corrupt generation, the light of the world that must not be left obscure, with the power of the gospel measured by the piety of its members and with God guarding it jealously, while disunity spoils its light and unity in love makes it a region of light. Matthew 5:16 shows what those who have oil in their vessels with their lamps will do, shining before men in good works so the Father in heaven is glorified by living in constant communion with God, making what is good stronger by words and presence, making evil appear as it is, never calling good evil or evil good, and sending forth from the life an influence for life, courage, hopefulness and true healing. Every converted soul is appointed to witness and must let graciously given light shine before those who do not know present truth, penetrating darkness of error as dense as that enveloping the Jewish nation in Christ's day, not by much talk only but by good works corresponding to knowledge of truth, using every jot of light, ability, talent and influence not for self-pleasing but for the Lord, trading on every entrusted talent in perfect obedience yoked with Christ to develop increasing consecration, efficiency and tact as laborers together with God. Those who have seen great light and had large opportunities yet cease to serve walk in the path of the Jewish nation and come under the message to Laodicea, becoming like the servant who knew his master's will but did it not, with unused talents required again with the improvement demanded of stewards, for profession without shining only encourages sinners to continue until Christ declares He does not know them as workers of iniquity. Christians are the world's light and the only Bible many read, through whom men see God by Christlike obedience and imitation with eyes fixed on the Model doing all for His glory, so every mistake shown in the divine mirror must be corrected lest a counterfeit representation turn the world away and crucify the Son afresh, since every Christian is either under Christ's rule or the enemy's control and is either a savor of life unto life doing positive good or a savor of death unto death doing incalculable harm, and sharing the light does not diminish it but brings further light and power as grace is given.

Ministers, physicians, officers and teachers must first walk in the light with prayerful study, humility and cooperation with Christ, living by principle with steady example and practical godliness, and leading physicians must not confine influence to one sanitarium routine but reach widely with wise counsel and Bible instruction. The Lord's faithful people shine amid darkness of suffering and sin, and many who patiently bear affliction and comfort the hopeless are little known yet serve as a light whom God calls His people to help by relieving their needs. The light is the saving truths of Scripture — the clear plan of salvation and the comfort, hope and peace found in believing in Jesus, including present responsibilities and duties and unfolding perils and glories with the end not far distant — received by studying the Bible with prayer and tears until impressed with its utterances, illuminating the understanding and gladdening the heart, creating duty and longing to make those truths known to others in the darkness of papal error. Good works should be visible to lead others to glorify God, so believers must not choose a course lessening or destroying influence, but use God-given abilities to serve and communicate light in heartfelt understandable ways as channels to those in darkness. Letting light shine means revealing Christ's love and grace through living faith and sanctified obedience and showing a true conception of God's guiding providences, which carries convincing power, since value is measured not by high position but by consecration and faithfulness, and when the remnant walk in humility and faith God works His eternal purpose through them harmoniously, using men, women and children to call out a commandment-keeping people and make known that He is the true God, the God of Israel, with witness reaching not only churches that know truth but people throughout the world.

Physicians and sanitarium workers must not hide light under a bushel inside one institution but serve as living missionaries exerting all influence widely to benefit believers and unbelievers, making themselves known outside, giving Bible instruction on every occasion, since neglecting public work fails to glorify God and souls are lost. Good works make a Christ-shaped life visible so others glorify the Father, which means living Christ's character, with the light of truth shining through works that restore the sick and relieve suffering by best methods rather than by outward display and large buildings. Heaven-given light must shine openly, so hiding truth or concealing identity as Seventh-day Adventist from fear of losing influence or advantage is contrary to duty, and holding the banner of truth aloft lets it shine through a converted life reaching those needing warning of the approaching end. Christ's representatives let Redeemer's light spread through a dark world by praying for the Spirit's sanctifying work to shine more brightly, receiving divine light from the Bible and letting it shine to those in darkness as Christ dwelling by faith enables knowing and teaching heaven's way, especially as the end draws near, with character and life making God's requirements visible.

Sanitariums are to shine amid moral darkness so the sick see Christ's power while the Word shines clearly, through orderly neat management with lifting influence, fragrant character and love of Jesus, with small homelike sanitariums in pleasant places rather than mammoth institutions reaching thirsting souls with living water. Good works have greater power than words, for a virtuous life and unselfish acts testify for God and awaken desire for righteousness bearing such fruit, and light shines properly as increasing divine illumination comes through growing knowledge of Bible truth with transforming power seen in a life becoming like His image. A life of obedience and good example influences toward God when self-denial and victory over appetite illustrate right principles and truth-shaped life bears witness to sanctifying power, teaching by example rather than fault-finding, and those who received light must let it shine so nations see works consistent with profession, especially urgent in the last days to illumine the perishing and stand for commandments before tramplers. In the sanitarium nurses and workers are to receive light from God and let it shine to reveal what knowing truth has done, making God's light visible through character and good works so God is honored, and a health institution fulfills this when workers live out Jesus' religion doing good to body and soul, since presentable appearance alone cannot suffice without living connection with Heaven through watchfulness and prayer. Each believer is to keep light burning through personal work for sinners, and when self is surrendered and holy oil received that light guides wanderers to God, with personal consecration bringing better results than display for show.

Properly conducted camp meetings in cities where the message has not been proclaimed serve as such a light to reach new communities, and camp meetings should be held where they reach unbelievers rather than in out-of-the-way places, with presenters earnest showing God is with them. Those receiving truth's light have duty to let it shine for those in darkness, with the Holy Spirit enabling visible faith through gospel-sharing work, and God still uses His church today to make known His purpose by consecrated men and women communicating light that made plain salvation through Christ, becoming witnesses while exalting God's law and preparing the way for the second advent. As they continue to shine as those baptized with the Spirit on Pentecost did, they receive more of the Spirit's power, and by continuing witness the earth is lightened with God's glory. Those loving truth should let its light shine before all living with God's glory in view, honoring Him even amid opposition and disorder, with lives closely conformed to His will shining as lights whose good works make God known in whole sanctification of soul, body and spirit. A character formed by divine power becomes visible witness whose light and glory point to God rather than the worker, as workers represent the Saviour by example and teaching directing others to the throne of the living God.

Gathering believers into large communities or concentrating work in one place puts light under a bushel and removes it where it should shine, so believers must scatter as missionaries, leave conveniences, establish centers in large cities, and not crowd institutions but diffuse beams into dark corners. God has made His people depositaries of His law and given light to shine by blessing others with godly influence, conversing with neighbors, praying with and for them, and seeking to bring them to truth and salvation, but when love of the world possesses the heart the higher powers submit to mammon, the mind loses remembrance of God and Heaven and is narrowed to accumulating money, property absorbs affections and eclipses salvation's plan, and increased cares leave no time to bless others, investing means in temporal not eternal things with less sense of the last-days work and no necessity felt for enlarging God's work. Good works let light shine when believers serve as missionaries among neighbors by circulating publications, holding meetings and Bible readings and inviting to learn truth, and those receiving Christ's righteousness by faith become a light whose good works lead others to praise God, including telling the lost of salvation and grace bringing sinners back. The light must not be gathered into one place but broken up and spread, not concentrating influence in a single large center but establishing centers where nothing or next to nothing has been done, diffusing saving beams into darkened corners, for a truth-changed life should make goodness visible in family and every part of life as Christ did, and even in difficult dangerous circumstances Christians are to remain faithful witnesses letting truth shine amid moral darkness.

Home Family and Conduct

The light is to shine first in the home, brightening the path for children before it extends beyond to neighborhood and world. Parents are the light of the home, and their Christian character shining through daily example benefits children and reaches through them into school, neighborhood, and a world darkened by moral evil. This home shining is done through pleasant words, soothing tones, firm discipline without passion, and morning and evening prayer, with an example that angels observe. Whatever manifests Christ in the household is light, and truth must be presented in a way that makes that light visible rather than keeping church members gathered only for their own benefit. Faithful home life lets others see the good that faith produces, as changed lives and characters testify to transforming power even amid hostile surroundings and lead observers, including opponents, to glorify God as its source.

A mother must not neglect husband and children for other religious work and leave them demoralized, but must stay, watch, instruct, guide, keep them from vice, win by kindness, and train diligently. Neglect of home shines in the wrong way, and a family left on a low level becomes a curse unless converted. Letting light shine is making faith visible through good works that show the advantage of Christianity over worldliness, reveal God's wisdom, and serve His work of leading to conversion, which believers created in Christ are enabled to do. This requires coming out of spiritual darkness by receiving the third angel's message into the heart, clearing away what keeps the Saviour out, and speaking of light and heaven, for speaking of light leads to light. Now is the time to do good to fellow men and to use means faithfully, even selling unneeded property to carry the warning to those hungering for truth, because all must soon give account and eternal destiny will be fixed by whether good or evil has been done to others.

Christians must live distinctly from the world yet not withdraw from men nor wrap themselves in Pharisaical robes. They are to remain among men as laborers together with God, like salt retaining its savor, associating to do good as Christ ate with publicans without becoming one with them, coming out separate without copying worldly practices. Letting light shine means giving clear, distinct, bright rays of truth amid moral darkness, being a blessing to neighbors by living out truth so others see its fruit in daily life. A husband and wife united in faith can shine together with greater power, and solidity of faith grows only by becoming interested in neighbors and being doers of the Word. Even when located far from great thoroughfares to avoid cost and demoralizing temptations to youth, workers are still not cut off from witnessing but are to let light reach souls perishing in highways and byways and in cities and suburbs.

Visible conduct must show inward sanctification through honesty, integrity, and temperance in business and social relations. This includes truthful upright dealing, refusing fraud even at cost, keeping integrity amid temptation, and letting perfection of character appear in all work. Such truthful acts shine as light amid moral darkness and deception, reflect heaven's light, earn respect even from outsiders, and lead observers to glorify God. Christians make cherished truth visible to unbelievers not only by special religious service but by Christian kindness, consecration, and ordinary daily duties done in the Spirit, each according to ability. Steady shining reflects the Sun of Righteousness whose light never dims, makes faithful witness possible amid darkness, and brings happiness and peace as well as benefit to the world.

Simplicity in dress and deportment lets light shine by showing eternal things above display. Dress is to be neat, modest, and orderly, without lace, gold ornaments, fashionable excess, or extreme styles, while untidiness, display, and extremes damage influence and hinder winning others. Walking in knowledge of the truth makes light shine in spirit, words, and actions, as fruitful branches of the living vine with truth in the sanctuary of the soul working by faith to purify, elevate, refine, and ennoble. Light shines only where sin is not cherished, for cherishing sin while knowing God's requirements leaves prayers in church, family, or secret as mere form and hardens the conscience, while those striving to overcome and confessing sins are forgiven and cleansed for Christ's sake and so are able to shine. Those who receive and reflect Christ's Spirit shine as a steady light seen in patient, gentle, loving words and in a countenance expressing His presence within.

Gracious words and cheerful manners let light influence others, while surly, fault-finding gloom cannot. Speech is to strengthen and bless rather than stir strife, and patient forbearing conduct even when others speak abruptly represents Jesus and teaches people. Those who hold unpopular truth are watched by the world for the spirit they reveal, and must both speak the message and represent it in character so that many seeing good conduct glorify God. Harsh speeches convince no one, and success in winning souls depends much on sounding the whosoever-will invitation in a gentle, winning manner rather than with a dictatorial, accusing spirit that drives people from God. Personal piety and abiding in Christ are necessary for this witness, making lives blameless and Christlike so that truth is visible through words and works wherever believers are, reaching places all around and not confined to one locality.

Mission Means and Places

Letting light shine means letting Christian influence reflect the life-giving beams of Christianity before others, with the brightness of that light proportionate to purity and piety and with blessing and success given when the Spirit can dwell and a power for righteousness goes forth through workers, while improper associates without fear of God dim the light by first tempting the pure and then making them tempters and ringleaders in wrong. It means each worker must labor earnestly and prayerfully without discouragement when professed believers go astray and oppose the Spirit, holding the torch in hand to shed light on willing and unwilling eyes and remaining true and faithful in all things under orders from heaven while representing the compassion of Christ. It is done in all business transactions by leaving the sanctifying influence of truth on minds, doing appointed work with brotherly kindness such as sharing coat and food with those who have none, so that life, words, and deeds exemplify truth as a tree is known by its fruit. It requires scorning all that is mean, base, low, and dishonest and being brave, good, and true to principle, with actions speaking mercy and compassion and building others up in Bible principles, and with honesty and frankness without guile, deceit, or prevarication. Youth and those in responsible positions communicate light by acting with strict integrity, dealing fairly with believers and unbelievers and refusing fraud, deceit, or sharp practice even when honest dealing costs money, so that conduct at work reflects Christ's attributes and God's law rather than hiding the light.

Reflecting light is done through warning words and missionary work in every line, through the printed page and the press circulating publications, handing out papers and pamphlets, speaking with neighbors, and putting books containing present truth before as many as possible, especially by canvassing. In canvassing this means serving others helpfully, showing courtesy, and carrying a Christian spirit into each home, so that conduct influences hearts and directs glory to God through good works others can see. Those who have received the light of truth and salvation are responsible for letting it shine by meekly and wisely commending truth through consistent lives, so others may accept its requirements, and this belongs to all who profess to follow Jesus with earnestness, energy, exertion, and diligence. Every truly converted person firmly established in truth is a light-bearer because Christ shines through him in a world shrouded in moral darkness, and when the gospel is allowed to operate under favorable conditions it gathers a harvest of souls, with a few truly converted souls of infinitely more value than many unconverted and dead in trespasses and sins.

Letting light shine requires the missionary spirit that sends workers into unworked fields with the last warning and follows awakened interest diligently, so that many in cities such as Memphis and New Orleans receive truth, while failing to work the cities hides light and leaves night in gloom. It is the duty of every church member to burn and shine so rays are seen amid moral darkness, by having root in themselves, exercising faith in Christ as personal Saviour, and accepting responsibility for souls who never heard truth. It means helping carry the mission to regions beyond to those who sit in darkness and have no light, holding up workers' hands and sending prayers as sharp sickles into the harvest field, instead of expecting time and strength to be spent keeping those who know truth in good spirit. Witness is not made effective by wealth, learning, eloquence, position, or display, but by humble teachable lives shaped by Christ and empowered by the Holy Spirit, whose spiritual influence reaches beyond themselves and helps others become workers for God. People do not shine by their own power because Jesus is the illuminator whose light they pass on, and refusing God's truth prevents becoming a living channel of light, while from conversion those who receive Christ become the light of the world by reflecting the glory of Christ the bright and morning star and uniting as laborers together with God in brotherhood for saving humanity.

Truth must be visible not in corners but in large cities, by the lakeside and in thoroughfares where many hear, taking light to highways and hedges as little companies and entering unwarned cities east, west, north, and south without waiting to be invited. The approach begins with practical subjects all can agree on before the Sabbath question, while in home and neighborhood parents and children serve the Lord and oppose evil, and godly life uplifting Christ with patient loving efforts to present truth breaks prejudice and leads toward salvation. The church must make its light visible rather than hide it, living and working so that worldly, ignorant, and sinful people may be converted instead of needing conversion itself, with entrusted powers cultivated and used through sanctification by truth to win souls and glorify God by reflecting given light. The great light given must not be hidden but set high above sensuality in thought or action, shining in clear steady rays to illuminate surrounding darkness, which requires purifying the soul by obeying truth and growing in grace, including obedience to physical law. Unjust business transactions and indulgence of passion make the light burn dim, and many lights burn low and go out for want of the oil of grace, while Christ is revealed through willing obedience, meekness, lowliness of heart, and self-sacrificing devotion in both preaching and living the gospel.

Helping the Huntsville school by circulating Christ's Object Lessons, selling and giving time to put its instruction in hands and equip the school, is missionary good work by which light shines and receives Christ's approval, as is arousing interest in education and building plain churches and schools that impress unbelievers. A life of unselfish love and practical care makes faith visible through kind words, help for the oppressed, and gifts for the needy offered for God's glory, putting the spirit of God's law into practice and giving moral influence, while profession or loyalty to law without loving service does not represent its principles. Letting light shine means revealing love for God not only in devotion of heart, mind, and soul but in apt wise use of physical strength in practical labor, with light shining by both precept and example amid erroneous theories and fashionable customs, and those who so live meet far less temptation. It means doing the work God has given so people of other nations may receive truth, keeping at soul-saving with faith and endurance even when outcome is uncertain or work brings discouragement. Sanitariums serve as beacons of light, warning, and reproof when faithful conduct shows care for the sick without losing holy character and helps reform in habits, morals, tastes, and dress, with physicians learning to take part in camp-meeting work, making known health reform principles in large gatherings, and using varied gifts both to speak before those not of the faith and to instruct members how to work most successfully.

Practicing health and temperance principles and teaching them by quiet example belongs to witness, including bringing health reform from under the bushel, living in opposition to liquor and tobacco, preserving powers through obedience to health laws, and at Loma Linda laboring in Redlands, Riverside, and San Bernardino with publications. Visible good works should lead people to glorify the Father, so in sanitariums truth must be openly cherished and clearly shown rather than hidden, promoting pure elevated morality and right habits of living. When women with means use resources responsibly and set an example of generosity rather than extravagant dress, their good example can help souls, while inconsistency strengthens others in unbelief. Families as missionaries let light shine by sharing publications, holding meetings and Bible readings, and reaching neighbors, with one or two well-grounded families entering new places where livelihood can be obtained, distributing literature, becoming acquainted, and inviting. Lay members scatter rather than settle together, smaller sanitariums in many places help and educate patients as God makes people channels of light when they let Him, and followers must not hide light because evil is widespread or love grows cold but show Christ with greater earnestness, including Sabbath observance and speech that strengthens truth's impression on neighbors. Letting good works be seen means bringing Christ's grace into all business transactions and living a self-denying life like Christ who left heaven to labor untiringly for bodies and souls and knew how to influence minds rightly, coming from pressing to God's throne for power to see the world's needs distinctly so that, led by Him, good works testify to Christlikeness and unity makes the given light visible to others.

Last Days Mission Message

In the last days the work of God is to reflect the light of Christ to dispel age-long moral darkness, carrying the Word of God to heathen lands where it is eagerly received, watched by Christ and angels, and increasing as His coming draws near until the message belts the world and gathers the sealed from every nation and kindred and tongue and people. Those who live for the glory of God rather than for self are to stand upon eternal truth and shine so that others see their lives and are drawn toward God, because conduct can lead toward salvation or become a stumbling block. The light already given is to shine forth in its purity and beauty so that God's name is glorified, including searching out and following instruction about educating youth and not gathering schools where a worldly element prevails. The light is not to be kept within the church but carried outward, with lives and ministry bearing fruit that reflects lessons and wisdom and mercy, meeting people where they are and finding common ground where possible without denying truth. Lay members who live the truth and use their abilities to reach people become missionary channels of light to them.

Being bearers of God's light is a privilege to thank Him for, shown when believers bring in the poor that are cast out, speak comfort to them, extend the influence of the school into needy places beyond, and keep searching for lost souls in out-of-the-way places. Temporal property such as the farm at Madison is only a means of support and must not hinder this appointed work, and blessing attends everyone who thus seeks to magnify truth, including establishing training centers for the education of colored youth to labor among their own race. The call of Matthew 5:14-16 to carry light into spiritual darkness so others see good works and give glory to God applies directly to sharing truth with the people of New York.

For Seventh-day Adventists letting light shine is proclaiming the first, second, and third angels' messages as warning, including openly displaying Sabbath truth while a false Sabbath is before the world, warning cities of judgments, and warning that enforced Sunday observance would support Roman apostasy. Those who have received the light of truth let it shine through good works and service so others are enlightened and the Father in heaven is glorified, and faithful work can make a person a bright light in his neighborhood. Being a living channel of light to the world requires power from on high and daily, even hourly, renewal of grace and salvation, with greater earnestness to seek God, greater earnestness to subdue self, and intelligent work that brings wonderful results. It also requires watchfulness and dependence on God rather than on finite human judgment, because great trials lie ahead and the enemy seeks to surprise. The peace Christ gives is the inward assurance of doing God's will and reflecting His glory through good works, and it can be enjoyed amid division, opposition, coldness, and suspicion rather than requiring outward peace.

A faithful life makes spiritual light visible to the world through consistent religion, holy speech, integrity in business, active benevolence, and godly example that can bring conviction to unbelievers. Believers are light-bearers by becoming sons of God through power received from believing in Christ, having come out from the world and being no more of the world, showing by blameless lives that they are sons of God. United with Christ as the branch is united to the parent stalk and abiding in Him, they are living examples of Christlikeness and are Christians because they are like Christ, whose life on earth was an expression of pure religion as the Way, the Truth, and the Life, and because willing and obedient they are led into all truth.

The grandest truth must shine from Washington D.C. by awakening to opportunities, establishing memorials, and proclaiming the third angel's message to every nation, including placing publishing headquarters near Washington with its imprint on books, keeping agencies in the capital, and a Washington sanitarium removing prejudice among counselors and senators. Christians are to shine in the world through superior work as lights amid moral darkness, error, and satanic delusions, and God expects this of them. One truly converted becomes a missionary whose Christian missions draw people to God and bring others to the Saviour. No one is to stay idle because he cannot hold the highest place, trade on pounds, use five talents, or work for the multitude, but is to trade on his one pound, use his few talents, do the smaller duties waiting for him, help those bearing heavy responsibilities, and work for individuals, proclaiming the gospel with its life-saving principles to every nation and kindred and tongue and people. Keeping Jesus ever before him and doing all to the glory of His name, with purity of motive and earnest desire to glorify God, his faithful wise use of little gains power for better work and heavier responsibility and brings the same reward as greater accomplishment, since reward follows the spirit and principles governing the worker and not man's measure of the work.

Christians must reflect the rays of heaven's light so others receive light through them and are attracted to the source, for every ray God gives is necessary for the coming emergency, and rejecting it or failing to discern, appreciate, accept, and act upon it loses the heavenly benefit and withholds from others what God designed them to receive. Even the most educated and well-disciplined disciples can do only little, yet everyone can do something, with every day bringing privileges and opportunities for unselfish effort for the glory of God and the salvation of men. This requires setting a good example and faithfully weighing results and effects on others, because all influence the course of others, there are sins of omission as well as sins of commission, and neglecting duty when work is laid before them breaks their link in the chain of God's great work and fails to sustain His cause. Those who receive the light of God's Word in truth become a bright shining light, as Bible study with open heart, communion with God, and reliance on the Saviour produce steadfast morally independent character that stands through difficulty and danger, with righteousness working from within outward and making itself visible in a life shaped by truth.

Faithful commandment-keeping people are day by day better prepared to shine amid apostasy as in Noah's days, knowing the times and putting every agency into service, with bearers of the third angel's message bringing all powers into active service and with wise virgins' lamps showing readiness by oil which is holy grace. Followers of Christ are not to hide received light but let it shine openly through good works so people are led to glorify God, placing it where it can shine clearly and advancing rather than letting others hinder the work. Failing to communicate received light through life and work brings great loss, while sincere unselfish service makes the gospel known to others. The light of truth is to be made visible through workers carrying present truth into cities, villages, and towns, and through warnings and the opening and explaining of Scripture. The brightness of Christian character is not their own but received from Christ the Sun of Righteousness, shining through lives that reflect His loveliness. True conversion and new spiritual life strip away selfishness to seek God's glory and fellow men's good and exert a healthful wholesome influence, while objectionable traits, lack of self-discipline, and unfitness for sacred trust cannot shine this light and, if such persons assume responsibilities such as establishing and managing a sanitarium, they injure others' experience and bring disappointment and continual friction, because such work demands far more fitness of character than is commonly realized.

Camp meetings should be held where they can reach unbelievers and awaken interest in present truth, for choosing out-of-the-way places frustrates the purpose of letting visible good works glorify God amid moral darkness. The verse was fulfilled by Vaudois Christians and Waldensian missionaries carrying Scripture to free people from Rome's bondage, training ministers who traveled on foot in coarse garments concealing portions more precious than gold, and by reformers carrying light into native lands as at Pacheco where a changed life forced acknowledgment of power. Those who love God supremely and neighbors as themselves are to be lights whose piety, devotion, and Christlike character make truth visible and draw people to it, communicating what they know, lifting up Jesus, and bringing light to those in darkness. Believers let light shine so others see the way to Jesus and eternal life and glorify God, carrying it near and far by helping children and neighbors, pointing people to Christ, and showing how to trust God and receive His righteousness by accepting Jesus as personal Saviour. Practicing known truth and letting light shine in clear earnest appeals calls families who put away unessential things to prepare for the Lord's very near coming by helping children gain Christian experience and helping other families use God-given talents to God's glory.

Shining before men means revealing in one's own life the truth that men and women are to be conformed to the image of Christ, improving talents, cultivating powers of mind and body, increasing knowledge of God's Word, improving the gift of speech, and by godly example uplifting the power of the Word to transform lives. In simplicity and sympathy and tenderness it means making known to souls their great need and pointing them to Christ who will be all in all to those who seek Him, bringing blessings, spiritual strength, and increased light and power to serve. All who have received the light of truth are held responsible as stewards of God's grace to enlighten others, and those familiar with God's Word and what Christ commanded must faithfully use entrusted means to open new fields and carry the message to unworked places, teaching those who would accept truth if presented as Christ presented it on earth. God's people and institutions are to be channels allowing God's truth to shine through them, and when those who should carry light instead shut out its rays Satan gains influence rather than the Spirit of God. Everyone receiving divine grace is commanded to shine by sharing it, the church is to be a channel through which God's life and grace reach the world, and each believer is accountable for people within reach who are in unbelief and unaware of God's blessings.

Those whose torch of truth has been kindled from the divine altar must carry that light into the sin-darkened field of the colored race in the South, who through past slavery cannot help themselves and are left as the sport of Satan's temptations unless light is brought to them. Turning away from rescuing the downtrodden and degraded and refusing to help the helpless is disobedience to the command to shine, watched with hushed sorrow by angels, and God's servants must at once redeem neglect so the dark stain on their record may be wiped out. Followers of Christ must make truth known to people they meet and not hide it, with light shining as they clearly present Scripture and live faith through good works so others see truth and glorify God, bringing spiritual strength and influence while angels help workers speak as they open the Scriptures. They let light shine by speaking and acting to honor Christ and help and uplift others, making a clear distinction between those who serve God and those who do not, so faithful influence leads others to recognize and glorify the Father. Being so connected with God through watching unto prayer lets light shine in words, spirit, and deportment, with every word and action correctly representing professed holy faith and treating others as one wishes to be treated, so Christ is not ashamed of His followers, which requires knowing one is in Christ and Christ in them, for without that union no one can teach and lead others.

Professing Christianity while living the life of a sinner places stones of stumbling before unbelievers, whereas professed Christians must let the life of Christ shine out through their own lives. Believers are light meant to guide others to safety in faith so they glorify God, as a lighthouse should, through lives and words that make that purpose clear. Church members must make faith visible by speaking out in witness against worldly amusements and in proclamation of present truth.

Hindrances and False Witness

Hiding the light leaves others in darkness, while sharing it kindles further lights in those who receive it. Refusing to shine dishonors Jesus, for the truly converted soul is illuminated from on high and must shine, with Christ in the soul as a well of water springing up into everlasting life shining out in the home in sweet piety, satisfied contentment, kindness and love as the rule of the household, with no faultfinding, grumbling, pettishness, harshness, scolding or severity. Hiding comes from cowardice and fear of disapproval, from fear of loss of patronage or desire to obtain patronage, from being ashamed of Christ or from passing in harmony with disobedience, and such hiding becomes a stumbling block that falsely tells the sinner it is well. The light of God's righteousness is to shine through face and words and deeds, and loving one another as Christ loved makes that light visible, breaks down barriers between people and God and one another, and removes obstacles to the Holy Spirit's work from heart to heart, with faith working through love purifying the soul and leading to greater praise of God. Believers reflect light from God through humble service under the control of the Holy Spirit as channels of that light, so the work reaches beyond one locality and blesses the communities where they live.

The world is never converted by conformity to evil but by distinct holy living, for obedience to God's law brings harmony with heaven and makes the light shine amid moral darkness so truth triumphs and God's glory is revealed. Pleasure-seeking gatherings, festivals, bicycles, strife, and spending on candies, bows, ribbons and needless dress fail to reflect Christ, and denying self of unneeded indulgences to help the needy and proclaim present truth is part of letting light expel the darkness of sin. Going to the theater or ballroom undermines witness, since even outsiders see the inconsistency, and the purpose of shining is to honor God rather than seek the world's approval. Shining means living the truth day by day until its sanctifying power controls the speech, feeding on Jesus Christ and eating the Word of God until truth becomes part of the life and the person becomes a partaker of the divine nature, one with Jesus Christ, for no fruit is produced until speech is sanctified and no one can shine or communicate what is not meat and drink. Sanitariums established where great numbers of tourists gather yearly, such as Los Angeles and San Diego, are to stand as lights by giving the last message of mercy to all who come within range of their influence.

Worldly ambition serving Mammon and love of money narrow the mind to accumulation and leave no time to bless others. Many claim to be light and salt yet fail to burn or shine, holding envy and selfishness, and such light is darkness and such salt is without savor fit only to be cast out. God-given light is to be made visible through wholehearted Spirit-filled lives and work, with example and words diffusing that light, advancing God's work and directing people to God. Faithful use of entrusted means can make Christ's saving grace, mercy, compassion and love visible through good works, leading many to glorify God, and Christ's transforming grace engraves the Saviour's image upon the heart and reveals His character in spirit and word and act so His light is reflected in clear rays bringing blessing and health to body and soul. Entering every open door to let light shine includes working together in temperance work, with good works possessing and revealing the fruits of the Spirit in life which gratifies and convinces those who see and hear, and carrying responsibilities in the fear of God under the sanctification of the Holy Spirit with angels presiding gives hope of success in educating in discipline to God.

Inconsistency dims the light and turns people away, with careless temper, dishonesty, quarreling, backbiting, criticism of God's servants and harsh speeches convincing no one. Pride, contentiousness and objectionable manner make influence like darkness, requiring corrected character and a teachable mind, while selfishness, love of ease and worldliness keep the light entrusted to the church from reaching people perishing in ignorance and sin. Neglect and inconsistent conduct give unbelievers grounds to excuse their own disregard of God, so every transaction, including in a Christian school, should be an example of the care and integrity God requires. The truly converted reflect light from heaven by living Bible principles before the world in a kind, humble, thoughtful life that loves neighbor as self, holds forth the Word of life as a bold soldier of the cross, walks and talks and works as Christ did and bears precious fruit, keeping straight on with eye fixed on Jesus despite misrepresentation and loss of human praise, doing right because it is right, thereby gaining influence so prejudice dies away and Bible principles are respected in home, neighborhood and church. Such shining is seen best at home, and if Christians at home they will be bright shining lights in the church with candle on a candlestick giving light to all in the house, requiring thorough conversion, sanctified heart and new birth producing pure elevating holy conversation, good conscience and good fruit, with just dealing, mercy, humility and clear sharp loving testimony rather than cheap common talk or smooth words hiding licentiousness under godliness.

Conduct that misrepresents Christ becomes false light misleading others with grave consequences, for profession without works is dead. Merely agreeing with the truth is not enough; it must be lived out in practical service and helping others, with good works making light visible and directing people to honor God and not self. Those who refuse to follow the light given them find it becomes darkness to them and they lose their way, while lives and teaching that hold up God's standard point people away from Satan's standard which leads to misery, degradation, disease and death. God's children are to make His love visible through blameless lives whose good works lead sinners to the cross to behold Jesus the Lamb of God, with the lamp in their hands in a world of darkness shining brightly through self-denial and united effort in doing their best to render offering and carry out His specified will. Heavenly truth and love shine through conduct and good work making God's principles visible and prompting questions about faith, so even ordinary business can reveal this light and bring honor to God, and a meek humble consistent life with faithful daily duties recommends truth more faithfully than argument or talk.

Every life affects others for good or harm, either brightening toward immortal life or leading toward ruin, and influence continues beyond one's life. Those who disobey God's commands and misrepresent His character are not lights, because their example misleads others and corrupts influence instead of honoring God, while God's people are lights when they follow principles of righteousness. When believers are in lethargy with faultfinding and dissension and striving to be first they do not shine, and people attending meetings will not join the church, for that lightless state grieves the Spirit and God will not convict and convert souls to bring them under such an influence where they would be demoralized rather than elevated, purified and ennobled, with truth made to serve sin. Letting light shine requires conversion and consecrated workers sowing seeds of truth with steady firm persevering steadfastness, and if they do not fail or be discouraged a harvest of souls will be gathered. Each believer must have light and let it shine where placed by carrying the work forward in faith and humble dependence upon God, whereupon God's blessing rests and His salvation is seen in advancement, including deeds that restore the sick and relieve physical disorders by correct methods for service to God and not outward show, and good example in words and deeds brings glory to God. Believers are to keep shining through lives and good works representing Jesus, sharing truth and seeking to turn people from error, though discouragement after rejection can extinguish desire for this work.

Manner and Results of Shining

A shining life kindles others to follow God and draws them toward Him through shared faith, as the Samaritan woman's witness brought others to Jesus, and as hungry souls in cities accept truth they go to work bringing light to others with means used to advance the cause. When truth and the Spirit of Christ abide within, visible points of righteousness appear before brethren and the world as an example of gospel holiness, making the life a bright and shining light, and this is proved by comparing thoughts, tempers, purposes, words, and deeds in daily life with the law of God to see whether they harmonize with God's moral standard of right. A Christian's kind, unselfish, and self-sacrificing deeds make Christ visible in character and lead others to glorify God, and children and youth are called to live as a blessing wherever they are, doing necessary work and courteous acts rather than living for themselves. Good works should make God's character visible to others and lead them to glorify Him, and physicians and other workers shine as lights when they conduct their work with fairness, exactness, mercy, and love, refusing to exploit people through unjust charges, so that their conduct reveals Christ's character and the principles of the gospel to the world.

God's people are to emit light before others as a living temple made of living stones, and each member shines by bringing the special Bible truth needed for this time to the people. The work Christ's followers do through the church can communicate light to others, for when Christ lives in them they stay active in service, and their good works make God's light known. People who trust in Christ are to communicate His light, and their witness can awaken courage, hope, and joy in humble hearts.

Believers shine by working humbly keeping self out of sight pointing to Christ through quiet service, with humility, courtesy, and reliance on grace giving life-giving influence, and with steadfast faithfulness in every act rather than deliberate display or theatrical methods. God's people make heaven's light visible through their work, leading others to turn to God, and workers were to devote their talents to building up the institution and reflect that light so souls would be converted, while making God first in everything. Jesus' followers are to make their faith visible through good works so that people give glory to the Father in heaven, and students put this into practice by serving as Christ's representatives in church and doing missionary work in cities, towns, and villages, such service revealing the value of true education. Letting the light shine forth means proclaiming the message in Boston and New York and other large cities, using facilities God gives for that work including sanitarium work as seen at Loma Linda and Melrose, with works corresponding to faith, without expending large sums of money for houses to live in, working prudently through consecrated workers and training many to do the work close by, since working the cities of America is a call equal to going with truth to distant lands.

Living rightly can shine as a light amid the darkness around, and in health reform this means providing wholesome, nourishing, palatable food rather than making the diet so poor that health reform becomes health deform. God's people are to let heaven's light shine into the hearts of those in darkness by carrying the truth to places that have not heard it, and this calls for self-denial and active work so that people may see the good done and glorify God. Letting love of Christ in a spiritually minded heart shine means profitable words that help and bless hearers and uphold God's servants and their message, while those who come to hear truth but go home to stimulate themselves with tea, having no love of Christ in the heart and nothing good to bring from the treasure house, pervert the verse by letting their light so shine in evil thinking and evil speaking that criticizes the speaker and his words, sows seeds of evil and doubt about the Lord's ambassadors, confuses the senses, injures the influence of workers, and reproduces itself in other minds, showing a religion that is worthless to the possessor.
