Matthew 7:25
And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock. And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.
Hearing Christ's words and doing them builds the life on rock so that rain, floods and winds beat upon it and it does not fall, while merely hearing, professing, preaching or doing wonders without obedience builds on sand to certain ruin. The rock is Christ himself, the eternal, living, unchanging Rock of Ages and sure Cornerstone on whom alone a life stands safe for time and eternity. The rock is also His enduring Word and teaching in Scripture, His law and commandments as the transcript of His character, and the doing of the Father's will in daily obedience. The rain, floods and winds are trial, temptation, persecution, deception, calamity, sickness and death, and the final judgment and wrath that test every life and reveal its foundation. The house is human character built point by point by daily choices and deeds, which must be founded first by digging deep, trusting Christ alone, keeping His commandments in home and business, and living faith that surrenders all and bears good fruit.
Context and Illustration
Hearing the sayings of Christ and doing them builds the house upon rock, so that when rain descends and floods come and winds blow and beat upon that house it does not fall because it is founded upon rock. Only hearing or saying or preaching or professing without doing builds upon sand, so that house falls, and the wise builder is distinguished from the foolish by obedience to what is heard. Receiving truth carelessly or failing to cherish its light leaves character built on sand, while accepting Christ's righteousness as the only hope of salvation makes the foundation secure, and self-righteousness and reliance on human merit, wisdom and strength lead to ruin. Character is built day by day, point by point, and obedience makes the foundation sure, for the house founded on rock is a life built on Christ Jesus that withstands adversity and the forces that test it. Mere profession of Lord, Lord does not bring entrance into the kingdom of heaven, even with prophesying and casting out devils and many wonderful works done in Christ's name, when joined with working iniquity and failing to do the Father's will, and many who honestly think they are doing God service are working at cross-purposes with Him because they are not doers of His Word and will be told to depart as unknown.
The verse belongs to the Sermon on the Mount, which was given especially for the disciples but spoken within hearing of a large multitude. Its lessons are to be lived out and put into practice, and putting them into practice makes a deeper and more lasting impression than preaching them from the pulpit. The sermon is wonderful yet so simple that a child can study it without being misled, and the mount where it was spoken is an emblem of the high elevation on which Christ ever stood. Its teaching bears no comparison with masses of human tradition and literature by infidels and so-called wise men, which can never fit the learner to live in this life so as to obtain the higher immortal life. Its words were spoken with an authority exclusively Christ's own, showing the way to heaven, every sentence coming from God, for Christ is the Word and the Wisdom of God, and the words He speaks are spirit and life.
The parable draws on familiar everyday experience to teach spiritual truth and make the unseen understandable through ordinary things seen and experienced, so that every hearer can grasp it. Houses built on the low plain faced danger and were swept away by storms and torrents, while dwellings built with difficulty on rock endured the tempest, because their foundation was secure. The house on the steep, difficult-to-reach rock illustrates the kingdom of heaven: its apparently inconvenient foundation is what makes it secure. The rain, floods and winds are trials, hardship and calamity that beat upon every life and test the foundation, and the obedient who hear Christ's words and obey them in faith leading to eternal life remain standing when calamity comes. The life built on hearing and doing is founded on the eternal Rock and will stand when tested, for no storm can make such a soul perish, and Christ gives light and wants people to be saved.
Meaning of Rock
The rock is Christ himself, the Eternal Rock and Living Rock and Rock of Ages, the solid and sure and true foundation and Cornerstone, the Rock cleft for humanity and hiding place as the shadow of a great rock in a weary land, who never changes. The life built on him by hearing his teaching and doing it stands firm when trials come, because the foundation is Christ rather than human merit, human wisdom, or self-righteousness, and receiving his righteousness as the only hope makes the foundation secure. The doer is riveted to the eternal rock with a deep foundation that floods cannot move, enduring the storms of temptation with spiritual health and vital life, peace, joy, and heavenly discernment. Only such a life built on him day by day in obedience is safe and stands for this life and eternity, valuing every privilege bought by blood and pursuing a course that will stand the test of law unto an eternal weight of glory.
The rock is also God's enduring living Word and Scripture in Old and New Testaments, Christ's words and teaching, immutable and authoritative, standing forever when heaven and earth pass away. It is the only truth and sure rule for all doctrine and all life that can never fail or deceive, and he who builds on it shall stand against all the powers of hell, while all human doctrines and vanities set up against it shall fall before God. It cannot be destroyed however many war against it, while whatever is built on human authority will be overthrown, and every foundation must be tested by it, with Scripture explaining Scripture and clearer texts illuminating others. Building faith on that living Word rather than on changeable pleasing scientific theories, and making Christ's words the foundation of character by receiving them and putting them into practice, is what keeps the house secure when hardship, trial, and calamity strike.
The rock is obedience itself, hearing and doing Christ's words, doing the Father's will and practicing truth in daily life in response to the leadings of the Spirit on the strait gate and narrow way. It is the platform of eternal truth identified as God's law and commandments as the transcript of his character, including the Ten Commandments, so that following Christ who kept his Father's commandments and walking as he walked gives stability no storm can sweep away. Keeping them and staying within their principles especially in business gives a foundation no storm can sweep away, while departing to make a law for oneself builds on sand with a heavenly record of pride and folly. Mere hearing without obedience leaves a person exposed to collapse, but words and works testifying for Christ show the house founded on hearing and doing.
The rock is truth, truth as it is in Jesus, doctrines and principles received into the heart that govern actions, so that clearer understanding leads to a more spiritual life and holier affections. It is the platform braced by solid timbers of the Word and past experience of God's people on which they stood for fifty years, the firm scriptural evidence of the faith established after 1844 and its messages which later difficulties have not shaken. Those messages are the principles of truth given to the remnant church as pillars of faith honoring the Sabbath and the Creator and depending on divine rather than human power, to be held with not a pin removed. Turning from that truth toward error, loosening its timbers by spiritualistic doctrines denying God's personality and past experience, or giving it up for reorganization and a new organization with books of a new order and intellectual philosophy that lightly regards the Sabbath and removes God, is building on sand that storm and tempest will sweep away.
The rock is the foundation already laid through prayerful study of the Word and revelation, which is Christ the shepherd and bishop of souls and the platform of eternal truth, and no stronger or different foundation can replace it. A new faith or new principles built on another foundation soon falls to pieces under opposition and trial, while faith founded on the Rock withstands and remains steadfast to the end. Those who turn from human foolishness and frailty, man's seductive arts, Satan's planning, and attempted reformation without the Spirit's reviving power, and turn to Christ for spiritual life and rest, stand secure and can say in the storm that the anchor holds. Receiving his life, they become living stones joined to the foundation and to one another in a shared life from God, forming a spiritual house that cannot be overthrown.
The rock is the statements of the living oracles known to be true, with hope and feeling and experience joined to belief so that hope has a firm foundation that stands when feelings change. In contrast sand is religion resting only on fluctuating feeling, fervor, and excitement without hunger of soul for righteousness and thirst for the waters of life, professing religion and baptized yet not tasting living water but drinking at broken cisterns that hold no water. When experience changes and pleasant feeling gives place to careless indifference, such hope and faith and religion depart into love of excitement in ballroom and dance and show. Here the rock also represents steadfastness to truth that stands through trials, and clinging to Christ's blessed words and riveting the soul to Jesus as the eternal Rock holds in great trial and steadies confused minds with Jesus all in every hard place. Getting upon that Living Rock takes strenuous exercise of all mental and spiritual powers, every spiritual nerve and muscle, to understand the Word, the incarnation, and redemption, of which even strenuous minds touch only the surface with infinity beyond.
The rock is Christ the Word and revelation of God's character, law, love, and life, known in the glory of God in the face of Jesus full of mercy, love, goodness, truth, and immeasurable compassion seen at the cross, so receiving his words is receiving him. Building on him is obeying in living faith shown in righteous action in response to love rather than to earn favor, for holiness is surrender to God and doing his will, and mere knowledge, feeling, or profession does not make a secure foundation. His church and followers built on him as Rock of strength cannot be overthrown though only a handful and feeble in appearance against demons and evil men and six thousand years of Satanic wrath, for the Rock of salvation stands unmoved. Those settled on him as the solid Rock receive power as from the source of knowledge, wisdom, and spiritual strength, wearing his yoke in submission and consecration and finding rest, and stand with commandment keepers having the testimony of Jesus.
Building on the sure Rock of Ages means relying on God rather than human inventions, holding to established truth and landmarks on the eternal Rock that storm and tempest cannot move. It means grounding faith in God's sure Word rather than probability, and knowing truth for oneself by close critical study of Scripture with much time on the knees pleading for opened understanding and deep conviction of the Spirit, instead of copying others or taking truth from lips without research. Such seekers receive help from angels round about them, while laziness in letting others search for them leaves even ministers preaching without knowing Bible truth for themselves and unable to discern error. Those who so build on Jesus Christ and him crucified are secure amid the coming crisis and conflict and are not swept away when the enemy comes like a flood.
Building on the rock means coming to the cross of Calvary for inspiration instead of trusting bigness and cleverness to pick what is precious from infidel authors, riveting the soul to the Saviour by strenuous effort to know the Bible and the truth that makes wise unto salvation. It means being taught of God and sanctified and ennobled through truth with spiritual discernment kept alive, rather than supposing oneself wise while foolish and building on sand that the tempest sweeps away. It means placing feet in the footprints of the Man of Calvary where the True Shepherd leads, searching Scripture earnestly, trying the spirits whether they are of God, discerning false and true life, and refusing ignorance of Satan's devices and double-dealing. So laid, the truth becomes the rock for the sanitarium work and all work to withstand beating storms, dug deep on Christ and God's Word with trust resting not on human beings, devising, sympathy, attention, sentiment, or hereditary tendency, and falling on the Rock broken in humble yielding.
The Jewish nation failed to see God in Christ as the Rock higher than self and everlasting strength to hide in, the Rock cleft for every son and daughter of Adam. They did not say, lead me to the Rock that is higher than I, to hide in him. If by faith they had witnessed this and said he is my Rock and the Lord Jehovah is an everlasting strength, Jerusalem would not have been destroyed.
Meaning of Storm
The rain, floods and winds are trials, hardship, adversity, calamity, testing and judgment that beat upon every life and reveal whether the foundation is rock or sand. They include temptation, persecution, opposition, unjust reproach and fierce temptation, to be endured with spiritual health, peace and discernment, for opposition tests spiritual life as storm tests a house. The one who hears Christ's sayings and does them stands firm when trials come because the foundation is Christ and His righteousness received as the only hope, not human merit, wisdom or self-righteousness. Receiving truth carelessly or failing to cherish its light leaves character built on sand, while obedience to Christ's teaching gives a firm foundation that withstands the trials and dangers ahead and leads to eternal life. Character is built day by day, and the wise builder is distinguished from the foolish by obeying Christ's words, as houses on rock endured storms and torrents that swept away houses on the plain.
The storm tests and reveals apparent security, and it includes the final test, judgment and examination of every person's account, conduct, words, spirit manifested, and home and business life. Doing His sayings means acting as mature men and women, taking His Word as counsellor and obeying God's law as the transcript of His character in home life, business life and neighbor toward neighbor, thereby building character after the divine similitude. God's promises are conditional upon keeping His commandments and doing what is pleasing in His sight, and on this ground of hearing and doing He deals with men and angels, bringing every work into judgment. The overwhelming flood of God's wrath with fire and tempest will sweep the world, its prophesied signs showing the end is at hand, and hopes built on untested foundations will totter and fall, for those on sand will not stand when everything shakable is shaken before Christ's coming. Therefore parents, teachers and students building for eternity must see that the foundation is sure and build firmly with persistent effort in gentleness, meekness and love, and people must be warned to build firmly before the final crisis while profession, assent or even impressive religious works without obedience cannot take the place of doing God's word.
The coming storm also includes Satan's deceptions, false teachings, fables, error, false theories, spiritual darkness and misleading sentiments that unsettle faith. At the close when all is confusion Satan works stealthily to confuse even those who know the truth and leads many captive through the power of darkness, and those living divided lives while professedly serving the Lord yet scheming their own plans that retard Christ's work will be deceived unless they repent and are converted. Those established in the Word and in understanding God's will and character through Scripture, doing His will now from a sincere devoted heart, remain unmoved, take their stand against that darkness, and can defend the commandments and the faith of Jesus in the final conflict. Doing the Word means undivided service gathering with Christ instead of scattering, going out from places of great light and opportunity into towns and cities to reach souls hanging in the balance, for many houses now supposed to stand secure will fall.
Persecution coming like a tempest cannot shake souls rooted in the eternal Rock, for only the one built on Christ Jesus by a deep work of grace is safe. The storm also pictures sickness, adversity, death and the overflowing scourge passing over, when a foundation on sinking sand is washed away while the house founded on Rock does not fall, and those neglecting preparation for eternal life discover too late that their future is uncertain. The coming tempest wrenches every timber and exposes as rottenness everything not built in Jesus, sweeping away those resting on vanity, selfishness and unconsecrated lives who refuse home burdens and refuse with enlightened eyes to look carefully into their own spirit, try motives, read the heart and lay the soul bare for close investigation. Building for eternity is bringing soul, heart and life under the controlling influence of the Spirit, letting self die so Jesus lives in the heart by faith, which makes happy.
A life built on error, false theories, unsound teachings and theories supplied by Satan as sand collapses with sudden great fall and loss when storm and tempest expose its weakness. In contrast the house on the Rock which is the Word of God living forever stands amid the tempest of worldwide agitation, confusion, discord and disorderly elements hastening the day of God. Standing firm requires thorough conversion, genuine new birth and true religious experience with a clear sense of the source of strength, joy and salvation, beginning reformation at the heart and making the heart right with God, which alone prepares for the mansions Christ prepares and entrance through the celestial gates. It requires harmony and unity with the Bible as study book whose principles are followed as a bright light, turning square about from wrong courses, refusing companions who lead into false paths, and building in harmony with God rather than raising vain treacherous castles for self and ambition unto complete wreck. For superficial circumstantial religion that follows selfish pleasure and inclination, neglects duty, deceives about its real condition and is without God and hope is make-believe on sliding sand that will not stand in the day of God but be swept away to eternal loss.
Houses Sand and Character
The house that does not fall when rain descends and floods come and winds blow and beat upon it is human character and the Christian life itself. That character is built day by day and point by point, stroke upon stroke and stone upon stone, by pure, noble, upright deeds without flaw so that it can endure pressure. It is formed through daily cooperation with God and daily choices, as each person cultivates the intellectual and moral powers God has given and is largely the architect of his own character. Right building now forms fitness for usefulness here and for a higher life hereafter, and the work will be revealed and tested as it is. The foundation must be laid first beneath the structure and not from the top down, for building upward before the foundation is right cannot make life a success.
The sand on which the other house falls is self as shifting sand. It is human theories and inventions, changeable pleasing scientific theories, self-made standards, uncertain opinions, false philosophy and skepticism with only surface understanding of Scripture, fanaticism, and worldly attractions. It is emotional religion united to human workers rather than to Christ, ill-balanced sand or quicksand that develops seams and cracks and goes down, a divided will, mere acceptance of truth without conversion, outward show, pretense and trust in people, and shifting dependence on men's words. It is also knowingly breaking God's law while claiming sanctification, and selfishly using God's goods for pride and display that robs God of the glory due Him in relieving suffering. Building on such sand causes the house to fall when winds of temptation and tempests of trial sweep away what is not founded on the rock.
Merely saying Lord, Lord does not bring entrance into the kingdom, but doing the will of the Father does. Hearing without doing, professing faith, giving assent, religious activity, self-confidence, strong feelings, frequent prayers and memories of past experience do not prove conversion when actions bear no good fruit. Even prophesying and casting out devils and doing many wonderful works in Christ's name, and even teaching truth, without obedience leaves the builder on sand, unknown to Christ and sent away as a worker of iniquity to ruin and great fall. Many who honestly think they are doing God service are working at cross-purposes with Him because they are not doers of His Word. Such religion of words does not lead to salvation and dishonors God, and self-confidence with refusal to repent or accept correction will make the spiritual building fall in the storm. Refusing to obey God's Sabbath commandment to avoid unpopularity is such unlawful building, for profession cannot replace doing God's will.
The foundation must be made sure before testing arrives, with persistent effort in gentleness, meekness and love, so the house stands unshaken not only when storms of temptation come but when the overwhelming flood of God's wrath sweeps over the world. Building on Christ Jesus as the immovable solid Rock and sure foundation means digging deep, removing all rubbish, and trusting and resting on Him alone for salvation, for in Him alone is salvation. How the building is done is of great consequence, and everyone must ask how he is building, valuing every privilege bought by blood by which everything has been done to bring sinners into right relations with God instead of questioning God's dealings. Such building pursues a course that will stand the test of His law, working out an eternal weight of glory. It means true religion and practical godliness instead of self-confidence, deep thought, earnest Bible study, faith working by love and purifying from deception and covetousness, thorough conversion and radical change with the heart made right through humility, examining the past and repenting of unconfessed wrongs recorded in heaven, and feeding on Christ's words as Bread of life with wholehearted service and cross-lifting rather than seeking temporal advantage.
Character is a great, grand building going up for time and for eternity that must stand final inspection, and it stands only when the foundation is sure, laid on the solid rock by doing the Word of God. Taking heed how to build means giving character the impress of the divine in pure, noble utterances and upright deeds, practicing what is taught to others, and rooting out selfishness with its poisonous roots that makes the growing building unsymmetrical. The mind God gives, but character man forms after the similitude of God or of Satan, for the mind is either the workshop of God or of Satan, so the mental powers and every God-given faculty need cultivation that character may grow into a beautiful building for the Lord which the whole universe of heaven will approve. A sure foundation with steady effort withstands temptation and God's coming wrath, while a building made with deficient material is doomed to ruin and will not stand the test. A character built without Christ's grace is like a house on shifting sand that storms of temptation will overthrow, whereas a life grounded in divine grace withstands those storms. Character-building must be altogether different in plans and methods and character, or storm and tempest will sweep it from its foundation, as is seen when those who claim to believe reproof until it requires change deny their errors and justify themselves instead of rebuilding when danger to their building is pointed out.
Hearing and Doing
Doing his sayings means obeying the commandments and law as the transcript of character, including the testimony of Jesus, and taking the Word as counselor in home life, in business life, and neighbor with neighbor to build character after the divine similitude. Strict honesty and integrity in deal are part of that deep foundation on Christ, and profession joined to dishonest dealings is building on shifting sand that the coming tempest will sweep away leaving no refuge. Refusing to obey the Sabbath command to avoid unpopularity is not lawful striving, for profession and religious activity cannot replace doing the will of God, and God's promises remain conditional on keeping the commandments and doing what pleases him in conduct, words, spirit, home and business, with every work brought into judgment. Claiming to be sanctified or to be God's people without evidence is unconsecrated building, for a self-made standard or knowingly breaking the law is sand, while holding pillar doctrines and elevating present truth of the commandments and testimony rather than exchanging God for men is rock.
Doing requires deeper consecration and diligent work for salvation to be ready to enter the holy city, by accepting correction, humbling the heart, dying to self, refusing one's own way, and putting away hereditary and cultivated traits that can never enter the kingdom, perfecting character in patience and kindness lest disobedience while thinking to do the Lord's work deceive unto loss. Strength and safety come from placing the feet in his footsteps and following his orders, not listening to one's own ideas, plans, or suggestions of one's own mind. Mere profession and receiving the Word is not enough, but members must practice truth and do the Father's will through self-denial and self-sacrifice, confession, reconversion and sanctification in soul, body and spirit, showing conversion by works and cooperation with God and yielding self to be cleansed and transformed. Hearing savingly is hearing in faith with earnest heed lest heard things slip, for the preached word does not profit unless mixed with faith, and known light brings greater light into Christ's likeness; only the doer of the Father's will enters the kingdom, not every sayer of Lord, Lord, and even prophesying, casting out devils and wonderful works without doing ends in I never knew you and great fall of the sand-built house.
Doing is practicing holy religion with faith working by love and purifying the soul, doing all possible good to high and low, rich and poor, happy and oppressed, and especially showing kindness, courtesy and love in the family to father and mother, husband, wife and child, looking to Jesus to catch his spirit and reflect his glory with no harsh word, impatience or recrimination. Standing on the rock is keeping a clean conscience, keeping God's law, keeping the way of the Lord to do justice and judgment, walking in self-denial rather than pleasing self, and setting the Lord ever before the mind in every transaction with much humble prayer in the knowledge that God sees. Sacrificing principle to lust, indulging perverted appetite and debased passion, enfeebles body and mind, wounds the soul, deforms character, defiles what is pure, leads others into forbidden paths and proves sand, while readiness to hear and do fortifies with heavenly principles and averts great evils. Choosing one's own way instead of God's separates the soul and shows one is not truly Christian, for profession without piety is a house without secure foundation, whereas obedience that loves people and seeks their good even amid obstacles is the mark of the firm life.
Mere acceptance of truth without conversion and practical godliness does not found even a minister's life on rock, for character must be shaped and teaching made spiritual and practical, not merely theoretical. Reading the Sermon is not enough but its teaching must shape the life, and depending on one's own wisdom instead of Christ cannot found, while truth planted in the soul marks the whole person. Hearing must be matched by believing and doing, for his words as spirit and life must be eaten, worked, dug like ore and shared as light, while hearing without practicing buries the talent. Profession alone has no saving influence, but hearing and practicing makes his character a living principle in heart, speech and conduct unto eternal life, with the living oracles guiding the life and God's word sanctifying the obedient to stand.
Standing is by obedient living faith that does righteousness and surrenders all to do the Father's will, riveted to the eternal rock by diligently hearing and doing every word instead of inattention in hearing and negligence in doing, keeping spiritual health, peace, joy and discernment amid temptation. As Israel on Canaan's border could not possess vineyards and olive groves by knowing or singing of Canaan but only by occupation, complying with conditions, exercising living faith, appropriating promises while obeying instruction, so the house stands only by acting on the word, valuing every privilege bought by blood that brings sinners into right relation instead of questioning God's dealings, pursuing a course that will stand the test of law working eternal glory. The faith that saves keeps the law, and presumption, impressions, feelings, special providences and miracles do not prove foundation, while accepted doctrine that kills sin, purifies the soul, bears benevolence and joy in right-doing and exalts Christ proves discipleship. The Spirit's inward work appears in outward conduct, overcoming sin and evil habit and bearing good fruit so the believer's life shows his will become their own.
Taking his mount words as life's guide attracts by divine beauty yet comes as solemn heart-searching warning striking at former ideas, requiring change in all habits of thought and action, collision with religious teachers and overthrow of generations of human teaching, a cost many deeply moved in heart refuse and therefore do not stand. Building on him as true foundation and chief cornerstone means surrendering self-righteousness, coming humbly, repenting, trusting forgiving love, following where he leads and crucifying self to become living stones, for outward self-improvement without connection cannot secure. Firm union to him with underlying godliness and righteousness worked out daily resists temptation, while emotional religion united to human workers rather than Christ is ill-balanced sand developing seams and cracks, and grave departures prove the foundation at fault. In contrast to fine structures reared by earnest work on a wrong Pharisaical line of externalities, humility with self out of sight and heart subjected to Christ purifies even minutest deeds unto soul-saving, with his preaching and practicing his own teachings as perfect model.
The secure foundation is accepting his righteousness as the only hope through union with him and reliance wholly on his atonement rather than merit, wisdom or strength, for sinners have no righteousness of their own but receive pardon and support in him. A life founded on true righteousness withstands test while counterfeit righteousness is shifting sand unto ruin, requiring giving up all and devoting every talent to God's glory. Mere acceptance without changed heart is unstable and exposed in trial, and standing requires thorough conversion, growing in grace and perfecting holiness, for failure to grow meets great loss in peril when the foundation proves sand.
There is no neutral ground once the Word reaches conscience, and hearers who do not practice are most guilty and dangerous because careless disregard leads others from obedience, faith and rectitude, with one in office not doing the Word doing incalculable evil. Building on sand is yielding to wishes contrary to the Word leaving no foundation, so the call is to choose obedience and remain true even under pressure from one close, examining where and how one builds. Knowing truth means studying Christ and his Word rather than what the world thinks, for none is high enough to ransom souls, and truth must be obeyed not merely understood. Those investigating truth need wise personal help to study the Word diligently as counselor to build securely, for profession or impressive works cannot replace obedience, and disregard of commandments may lead others astray until storm and judgment expose the course.
Accepting God's Word as it reads without twisting Scripture or mixing invented teachings builds on the eternal Rock, while false teaching brings decline and death. Studying the Word and doing what it says puts solid rock underfoot, and trusting firm promises gives sure footing, for feelings change with circumstances and are no measure of advancement. Seeking the help he alone gives, recognizing his presence and walking and talking with God everywhere, belongs to that sure building.
A house on rock brings forth good fruit, does the Father's will and enters the kingdom, while profession without practice, saying Lord, Lord, prophesying, casting out devils, wonderful works and even teaching truth without obeying falls. Being doers not living in conflict with law is the firm foundation pointing to a secure place in the earth made new, while the sand house is swept away. Building on him means having his mind, living in him and by every word rather than counsel or approval of those who do not know God, forming faithful obedient character trusting God for wisdom with a view to this life and eternity. It includes separating from the world and ties hindering faithfulness, and because the storm of wrath will reveal houses moving off sand, full earnestness now is needed, distinct from fanaticism. Mere profession without true reformation falls under trial, while faith and practice of truth stands.
Security through trials rests on Christ and eternal truth not human wisdom, and obedience keeps safe amid storms and tempests of temptation. Trusting God's Word and planting feet upon it enables standing firmly in Christ despite troubling events and failures among professors. Removing any part of faith leaves unstable ground before opposing theories, while standing on the Word keeps riveted and unmoved by theories not given. Building wisely for eternity requires honest self-knowledge, humility, setting aside what weakens spiritual life, working out salvation with fear and trembling, and building symmetrical character according to the living Word toward the city with foundations God builds.
Building on rock is hearing and doing in obedient faith rather than mere profession or outward show, laying spiritual life on unselfish love that seeks the lost instead of remuneration, purged by his blood, keeping truth's spirit, honoring the Lord in the heart, discerning sacred and common, and having Christ formed within. Seeking gain and cold formal service without Christ within proves the foundation never laid. It is trusting Christ daily, working out salvation and using every ability without boasting, as divine power joins human effort giving wisdom and righteousness to build securely.
Standing Secure Forever
The verse gives consolation and assurance for the unknown future to the faithful obedient one who hears Christ's sayings and does them, for hearing His voice and following Him places believers in Christ's hand where none can pluck them out. Building on the rock is walking with Christ with hand in His and heart filled with perfect trust, keeping close to the Saviour, walking humbly with Him in His meekness with self hid in God on the Rock of Ages. Putting trust in Christ is building hopes on Him as the sure foundation, so the storms of earth are powerless to sweep away those connected with Him, and Jesus helps all who trust Him. They follow the path where He leads, for His sake crucifying the flesh with its affections and lusts, and have happiness at their command, while making eternal interests secure by laying up treasure in heaven rather than making earthly possessions highest ambition keeps the rock-founded life secure when sickness or adversity comes.
Trusting in self is like building on sand and leads to ruin, while a life built on a sure foundation withstands the storm. The safe foundation is God's tried and precious cornerstone, and the warning is to turn to God before the tempest comes, look to Him for salvation, and rely on His strength and support rather than oneself. Self-trust leaves a person liable to fall when the coming time of testing tries every person's work and character, but a life rooted in faith in God stands firm through that test. Before the tempest of trial and ruin breaks, people must flee to the sure foundation God has laid and accept salvation while it is still offered, lest they be destroyed.
Being rooted in Christ and firmly grounded in Bible truth gives believers strength to resist temptation, false teaching, heresy and error, and they must keep holding to the Lord and to what God's Word teaches. That steadfastness means remaining true through evil report as well as good report and holding to the old waymarks and monuments raised up along the way despite efforts to make them of no account, while building on sand is lacking that steadfast experience. Those who understand and obey God's revealed will, and are grounded in the truths of Scripture, can stand firm in the final conflict and remain faithful to God's commandments and the faith of Jesus despite opposition. Character founded on the broad principles of God's word can withstand harmful influences without being turned from the right path when first right before God and standing in Christ's strength, and that firm foundation is a sound, well-grounded experience in the pillars of faith, strengthened by studying and understanding Scripture.
Standing is every person's privilege by a deep work of grace bringing soul, heart and life under the controlling influence of the Spirit of God, letting self die so that Jesus lives in the heart by faith, which makes happy and safe on Christ Jesus the Rock. The foundation is laid by thorough conversion and radical change where the old selfish life dies and Christ's life appears, for profession of truth or faith or impressive religious works without obedience cannot secure it, and those who disregard God's commandments build on sand and may lead others astray. When the soul is riveted to the Eternal Rock the foundation is sure and the structure stands though winds blow and tempest beats upon it, and living faith in Him as a personal Saviour gives firm footing and effective influence. Keeping that standing requires most diligent efforts to war against wrong thoughts and feelings expressed in words, for if under trial the character develops unseemly cracks because daily life is defective, with no steadfastness of purpose but continual leaning to self-indulgence and self-excuse, it becomes like a tottering wall bowing over ready to fall to ruin, while self-satisfaction is no foundation and faith must work by love.
Standing firm requires knowing God's will and obeying Him rather than men, even when obedience brings opposition and derision, for the rock is God's immutable word understood through the truths of the Bible. Standing on the rock means honoring God rather than obeying earthly powers when the two conflict, meeting opposition with It is written and holding to the fourth commandment as written by the finger of God without change. Therefore though singled out as not law-abiding citizens, summoned to courts, and arrayed against by the whole world, they stand firm on Christ and His promised presence and do not fall. Aged and faithful workers are compared to the house that withstands the storm because they have stayed true through both good and evil report, danger, crises and changing teachings, keeping convictions and duty at their post, warning against sin and showing faith by conduct like Noah in truth and moral rectitude despite hatred, reproach and false accusations.
Being founded on the Rock, who never changes, means looking unto Jesus continually, trusting and obeying the words of Christ, and heeding every warning He has given. Those who do this will never be deceived by false presentations, satanic whisperings and false theories, even when they come through brethren and changeable men who may be deceived and preach the theory of truth to lead others into error, for trusting men's words and making flesh one's arm puts the soul in peril. To be founded upon the rock means to take the Word of God, believe it, and plant the feet upon it, and in Christ to stand firmly. One so founded will not be confused and startled by troubling events, by want of piety in professors, or by lack of godly work in those connected with the cause, with brief confusion dispersed so experience confirms faith, sheltered by Christ when humbly seeking help so Satan cannot overcome, which is spiritual improvement into settled steadfastness.
Readiness to take up conflict when easily excited reveals that faith has not been founded on the solid rock. A life grounded firmly in truth and duty withstands trials rather than collapsing like a house on sliding sand, and firmness, self-denial, integrity of purpose, loyalty and consecration with abilities in use keep a person from being turned aside by affection, friendship, inclination, impulse or changing teachings. Building wisely for eternity means laying a secure spiritual foundation, which for teachers requires honest self-knowledge and humility, setting aside anything that weakens spiritual life, and working out salvation with fear and trembling. It means building symmetrical character in accordance with the living Word toward the city which has foundations whose builder and maker is God, prompting self-examination whether Christ is foundation amid corrupting examples, since education and life without obedience rest on sand while prayerful study and doing secure on the eternal Rock.
Building on the rock means yoking oneself with Christ and making one's eternal future secure rather than relying on probability, which calls for watchfulness, self-examination, and a life grounded in God's word. That true foundation on which students are to stand is the sure basis for their spiritual lives, steady through storms by sound experience. When rapid changes come, only those whose feet are set on that firm, sure foundation will remain standing through severe trials.
Standing amid the perils of the last days and in the great day of judgment depends on building Christian character upon God's own moral standard of holiness, the Bible standard, for every soul will be judged not by his own ideas of righteousness but by God's standard, and by that foundation he will stand or fall. Superficial views of what constitutes Christian character, satisfaction with low attainments, and hopes and pursuits that fall short of that standard disqualify a person to stand, and claims of holiness or good works cannot secure one who transgresses God's law and sets up a standard of his own. Building on the Rock means grounding faith in God's sure Word rather than in probability, with present preparation essential, for no one can rely on the latter rain to do work that should be done now, and delay can leave a person unready when probation closes and death comes. The builder on the rock whose life and work are founded on the eternal Rock remains secure when judgment reveals every person's choices and work, exposing those who build on their own principles and spread a wrong spirit through church plans and methods or resist the Holy Spirit.
The house built on rock withstands rain, floods and winds because its foundation is secure, and Christ Jesus is the solid Rock, sure support and unfailing strength on whom a person can plant feet and withstand hardship. Every soul will be tested, and only those who build on Him will stand, which means receiving God's truth in love, letting Scripture shape life, and depending on Christ for strength to obey God's requirements. Those who hear and do God's Word build on the eternal Rock and withstand storm and tempest, and those who heed Christ's words cannot be overthrown by trials and temptations even amid last-day deception. A life founded on the solid Rock is grounded in an experienced knowledge of Jesus — knowing what He is to a person and what that person is to Him — and this keeps from falling when tested.
Those who do God's will and conform their lives to His requirements have eyes anointed to discern the wiles of the enemy, eternal principles living in their hearts, indelible impressions on their souls, lives hid with Christ in God, hunger and thirst after righteousness, and trust in One mighty to save, so when Satan comes as an angel of light with specious temptations, sophistry, deceptions and policy like rain and floods and wind beating on the house, they overcome him and do not fall. The house on sand is those who do not do His words, and storm and tempest beat on it until it fell in entire wreck, which is the result of professing to keep the law of God while walking contrary to its principles. Such professors while failing to obey cannot stand the storm of temptation, for one act of disobedience weakens power to see the sinfulness of the next act, one little disregard of a Thus saith the Lord stops the promised blessing of the Holy Spirit, precious light becomes obscure, Satan takes charge of mind and soul, and God is greatly dishonored.
Digging deeper means fastening the soul firmly to God on the Eternal Rock, and this secure bond leads people to love God supremely and to love their neighbors as themselves so the tested life does not fall. Firm footing on Christ the Rock comes through living faith in Him as a personal Saviour and through knowing the power of His grace in one's own heart and life, and that experience enables influence to help draw sinners out of danger. Professing to be secure on the eternal Rock is no protection when life is built on the sand of sin, and those who live recklessly and follow impulse while ignoring danger face judgment and are called to turn from iniquity and build on Christ, who offers strength, peace and grace.
A church built on Christ Jesus as its rock can withstand what assails it, when opening the Scriptures, praying and exercising faith educate people in the Lord's way and build on this firm foundation. The church is called to make its foundation sure by riveting its members' souls to that eternal Rock and striving to love God supremely joined to living out love for neighbor. The house built on rock represents workers who have remained faithful to truth and principle through conflict, opposition, crises and changing circumstances, and their past experience can strengthen and guide others when faith is tested. Turning from truth toward error leads away from that solid-rock foundation, and those who have not dug deeply to make foundation sure may turn from the truth when the Lord's words come through His messengers, especially when they find the way too strict.
A life built on Christ, the true foundation and Cornerstone and refuge from temptation, fatigue and weariness, stands firm when battered by trouble, so children must examine whether they are building on Him. Safety is hearing Christ's sayings and doing them, taking the right side of the strait gate and narrow way with words and works testifying for Christ and responding to the leadings of the Holy Spirit, which forms a simple Christian character bearing witness to the saving message. A life shaped by Christ is a powerful witness, showing the higher life in daily actions not merely talk, striking deep roots unto precious character and good works. Those who live by every word of God and let Christ's beauty and grace shape character are prepared for His companionship in heaven and will stand in judgment, grounded in obedience to revealed word with warnings and counsel directing back to truths already given, not to new light.
A life built on the rock foundation of eternal truth withstands the testing that comes, while building on sand leaves vulnerability to ruin. The Word of God, with truth implanted in the heart by the Holy Spirit, keeps people steadfast in holiness and withstands forces that overthrow others. Turning away from that foundation by rejecting heaven's light and resisting God's appeals leads others toward the same false foundation, and those who drift from its principles are warned by the failures of others.
A life built on Jesus as its true foundation can withstand hardship, as learned through affliction when everything else proved like shifting sand and unworthy of trust. Building upon the sure foundation means trusting in Jesus as a child trusts its earthly parents, calling upon Him and trusting Him when feeling need of help, leaving uncertainty, error and false theories for the sure path, so storm and tempest beat upon and about the building without loss and destruction. Those who trust in counterfeit righteousness, without a heart changed by righteousness, build on shifting sand and are overcome when the storm comes. God's people must come up to a higher platform, with sin repented, stumbling blocks removed, and hearts clear and free before God, so their building rests on Christ Jesus the Rock and stands in trial and does not fall.
The heart must be founded on Christ the Rock, for a heart that has not fallen on Christ remains proud of its own wholeness, with self-love and desire for praise keeping the Saviour out. A true connection with Christ, rather than confidence in one's own qualities or wisdom, is the foundation of genuine godliness, and only the grace of Christ can make steadfast and keep steadfast. That rock foundation means having the truth of God rooted in the heart, and that rooted truth becomes the mainspring of every action, while trusting in anything else for support is leaning on a tottering wall, and a teacher departed from the faith cannot give soul-saving education.
Many professed believers were not building for eternity and needed to prepare for the coming of the Lord, for the house founded on rock withstands the storm. Christ is the rock on which believers must be founded, and being strengthened and settled on Him with life grounded firmly in truth and duty makes firm amid surrounding temptations rather than collapsing like a house on sliding sand. Last-day witnesses firmly grounded in the faith are not easily moved from it, and Christ strengthens them to face danger, hardship, reproach and other difficulties as they proclaim the truth. Yet some quick to take up religious conflict will fail in real peril because they themselves have not built on that solid Rock, which calls for firmness, self-denial and integrity of purpose with loyalty to God.
Clinging to the blessed words of Christ and riveting the soul to Jesus as the eternal Rock holds in a great trial of faith, steadies those confused or unsettled in mind, and makes Jesus all and in all, going before believers in every hard place. Building on any foundation other than the one laid leaves a person adrift, while turning to Christ and standing on eternal truth with spiritual life revived by the Holy Spirit brings security and lasting good. Safety comes from continually following Jesus and living by His word, not merely hearing it, and careful, prayerful study of God's word keeps well-balanced so those who hear and practice Christ's lessons reap what they have sown.
Doctrinal Landmarks Defended
Standing through storm and tempest requires a house founded on rock, while a house founded on sand will be swept away. The rock is holding the doctrines that stand as pillars of faith and the principles of truth given to the remnant church, which sustained the work for fifty years, honoring the Sabbath and the God who created it and depending on divine power rather than human power. The sand is giving up those pillar doctrines, discarding that truth, changing religion, counting the fundamental principles as error, establishing a new organization with books of a new order and a system of intellectual philosophy, going into the cities to do a wonderful work, lightly regarding the Sabbath and the Creator, removing God and placing dependence on human power which without God is worthless, even while teaching that virtue is better than vice.
The principles of Christ's kingdom in the sermon are the great enduring rule of life, laying right conceptions of His kingdom and His own character and undoing false education that hoped for worldly greatness. He lays this foundation not by direct attack on error nor by describing the misery of the world on account of sin, but by teaching something infinitely better and telling the conditions of entrance into the kingdom, leaving hearers to draw their own conclusions, and these truths are no less important now than to the multitude on the hillside. Hearing His words is not enough; by obedience they must be made the foundation of character, for the rock is Christ Himself and His words received and built upon, while self is shifting sand and building upon human theories and inventions causes the house to fall. His teachings give a sure foundation for faith and practice that remains firm amid the darkness of error, so that a life built on the solid rock remains standing when trials, opposition and storms strike, whereas new faiths and principles that lack this foundation do not endure. Steadfastness to the truth is the rock foundation, in contrast to building on sand.
The wise builder whose house stands in the storm is the one who comes to the cross of Calvary and receives inspiration from it, instead of trusting his own bigness and cleverness to pick what is precious from infidel authors and leave out what is vile. No one can by himself distinguish error so cunningly interwoven by the devil and evil angels. As intensity takes possession of every earthly element in preparation for the last great conflict, those who see what is soon to come will no longer trust in human inventions but will recognize, receive and present the Holy Spirit, contend for the glory of God, and work everywhere in the byways and highways for the saving of souls. Only those who build on the Rock of Ages as the only sure and steadfast foundation are secure.
Being planted on the rock means understanding God's will and character through Scripture and acting in obedience, with God's inspired Word including the law and testimony as the test of teaching and of those who claim to follow Christ. Those fortified by biblical truth and rooted in Christ and firmly grounded in Bible truth can remain firm in the final conflict, withstand severe testing and deception, and defend God's commandments and the faith of Jesus even when obedience brings opposition and ridicule. Those not firmly grounded in truth can be swept away by Satan's powerful signs and miracles, and those who follow their own ideas or accept deceptive doctrines are liable to be led astray when the coming storm tests every person's faith. Keeping God's commandments is part of that test.
Hopes for eternity resting on false theories and unsound teachings are a house built on shifting sand whose refuge trials sweep away so its structure falls. Building on the sand is becoming divorced from plain, self-denying gospel truth and receiving fanciful sentiments called truth, accepting spiritualistic ideas and fables in the disguise of truth even when they come arrayed in garments of light and find favor, and presenting them to others. A foundation based on human power and intellectual philosophy is like building on sand and cannot endure storm and tempest, for a life or work founded on God's principles alone withstands the storms that destroy what is built without God. The rock is Christ, the Rock of Ages, and the truth of His Word searched and understood personally, while the sand is shifting dependence on the words of men. Building on the rock means hanging the helpless soul upon Christ by faith, sinking the shaft deep into the mines of truth, understanding doctrine individually, distinguishing precious ore from base material and the voice of the true Shepherd from a stranger, so that teachers anchored in truth hold like a vessel whose anchor holds firm in storm and tempest.
Those on sand are easily misled by rebellion and apostasy, false prophets, fair words, and false christs, even when Satan personates Christ and works miracles, and the apostasy and shaking are permitted to expose the sand foundation. Believers must stay joined to plain gospel truth, keep away from such sentiments, and help the church plant its feet on the rock and heed the warning to others. A movement that rejects the truths God gave the church, removes God from its teaching, and relies on human power has a foundation like sand and cannot endure the storm. A life built on Christ's words and founded on doing God's word stands firm and withstands the storm of trouble upon the earth and the test of the judgment, while merely hearing without doing leaves the spiritual house in danger of falling and to be overthrown. Following Christ includes working to help save those who are perishing rather than neglecting people one could help, and a person's example must not lead others astray.
Building must be upon a foundation in which all can have the utmost confidence, so the work will stand. The fire going through the institutions in Battle Creek was God's providence with a reason, calling for study of its meaning and for conducting the interests started in such a way that God's people can invest their means with assurance that they are a part of His work, laboring intelligently and understandingly with humiliation of soul. Every standard raised in God's work must be founded on the Rock in order to stand firm and advance His cause, for what is founded on the Rock endures when rain, flood, wind, storm and tempest beat upon it and cannot be swept away. Standing on the platform of truth is standing on the solid Rock, where storm and tempest cannot beat a person away, and this is the only safety for a life founded on God's truth when tested by storms. Now is the time to lay a sure foundation upon the Word by obeying the light to move printing establishments, institutions and sanitariums and especially schools out of the cities into special, favorable rural locations where city life will not influence and retard the work and where constant temptation will not surround the workers. There families will not be encouraged to locate themselves about the institutions, land can be secured and improved to support as far as possible those who have families so they can live without requiring large wages, and economy will be practiced to lift the standard of truth in new localities.
A life and work founded on God's sure foundation withstands testing and endures, for God's foundation is revealed in His Word and only work carried out according to its principles will stand. Human plans and wisdom cannot replace God's authority. Safety is building on the rock and not on sliding sand. Building on sand means following a leader who frames false theories and governs himself by them, interprets the Scriptures according to his own ideas, does not discern the testing truth for this time, hesitates undecided when new theories present themselves while claiming to be right, misleads God's people by bringing in false theories and sentiments, and stands under strong temptation without placing himself where God can guide and control him. Building on the rock means watching and praying, refusing to be misled, and standing where God guides and controls.
Practical Life Applications
Youth must receive thorough training in self-denial, self-control, and expectation of difficulty, temptation, danger and trial, for superficial petted upbringing controlled by love of pleasure builds character on sliding sand without stability or firmness and spoils for practical life. A life built with sound character through firm grounding can withstand severe tests without giving up what is right, preserving principle, making God its trust, and coming forth with morals untainted even when unavoidably compelled to be in dangerous company under powerful tests of principle. Bible lessons with the Bible as basis and foundation of all study, joined to practical business lines, order, discipline and true missionary work, give depth, living experience and wisdom unto salvation, teaching present truth and what is required. Choosing serious, thoughtful, religious companions supplies good material for the building that withstands the storm of temptation, while accepting character defects or poor influences makes failure likely when tested.
Ministers who join worldly influences and mislead students and young people have not built on the Eternal Rock, and their work and its consequences will be faced at God's judgment. Teachers are to lead each student to stand on the solid rock foundation by working for the salvation and recovery of those lost through transgression. Applied to church-school education, building on solid rock means building teaching and work on the sure foundation of Christ's words and a divinely entrusted message bearing divine credentials with the cross central, rather than on uncertain shifting ideas, fanaticism, or trivial distracting teachings. School leaders build on the Eternal Rock by remaining faithful to God rather than imitating worldly customs and seeking popularity, and those who mislead the young through such choices will answer for their influence before God. Building on the Rock in schools means making the Bible the foundation of all study and the basis of education, so students learn truth for this time, become wise unto salvation, and know what is required of them.
Standing on the eternal rock in practical stewardship means treating money as the Lord's money, holding buildings erected with His means for His work as His property, and ceasing quarrels to stand shoulder to shoulder to build up the work rather than destroy it. Rulers must likewise build their course of action on eternal truth rather than sand, planted upon the platform of eternal truth which is the law of God with its binding claims, and ruling in ignorance of that law is building on sand. Rulers must be taught the law and are not to be worshiped as gods, for they are accountable to God for choices and effects on those under their authority and must answer to Him if rule becomes a savor of death unto death. Institutions whose underlying principles have been discarded and whose barriers have been gradually broken down have a sand foundation, while the Word of God cherished in the heart and followed as God's voice makes right and keeps right. Religion built on self-gratification and dependence on human sympathy rather than God has no lasting foundation and is easily overthrown, while building on Christ the Rock of Ages means living by every word with firm integrity and wholehearted willing obedience.
One who would build a house to stand must see that it has a good foundation and must build wisely, considering the work in all its bearings and not boasting when putting on armor for conflict as one who takes it off after victory. Worldly status and possessions are sand that do not make truly great and cannot stand, while true greatness is greatness of soul in heaven's sight, built through a life joined to Christ and devoted to doing His work. Christ Jesus is the sure support and unfailing strength on whom feet can be planted to withstand hardship. In beginning work in a new conference, building on the solid Rock means humbling the heart before the Lord and acting with unity of purpose, while independent work lacking this foundation is unsafe. Laying foundation upon rock means going deep and moving slowly and surely, as in seeking whether it is the Lord's will to secure property for sanitarium work, trusting Him to grant or refuse it, confirming worth exceeds price and papers show clear title free from mortgage, and saying little publicly about the desire.
God's people are to build His institutions on the eternal Rock on a sure foundation, conduct them so He can direct them, and stand united rather than quarrel or destroy, for what is built there belongs to God and He can sustain it. Safety comes from living Christ's word not merely hearing it, keeping practicing His lessons and doing His work, and careful prayerful study of God's word keeps balanced and resists the lure of riches through speculation in lands and mines. Religious faith founded upon the rock can withstand what would otherwise bring down, and that foundation is truth as it is in Jesus brought before the mind after sympathetic care and help with physical needs. As workers help, the Holy Spirit works with them to awaken moral and mental powers so many are rescued and saved, including those from deep degradation, once fine minds with rich qualifications, and fallen ministers overcome through intemperance and yielded temptation, when met by medical missionary work and simple schools conducted after God's plan by teachers who do the Word without startling strangeness of doctrine, though much painstaking effort is required.
A life founded on rock does not collapse under rain, floods and winds, and the Bible carefully studied and obeyed safeguards from Satan's deceptive snares, in contrast to ruin when human feelings and impulses govern marriage decisions instead of seeking and obeying God's counsel. The house founded on rock remaining standing when storms strike also shows that impressions made on young minds can become lasting marks shaping character and resisting later change. Those who join the world in opposing God and truth are not built on the Rock, and their work and consequences will be exposed before God. Accepting reproof is falling on the Rock broken, yielding to truth that exposes and condemns conduct rather than resisting and rejecting the message. The hard-hearted must fall on the Rock and be broken through humbling, repentance, confession and turning from sin so sins are cleansed from the record rather than remaining charged, then be changed and act with earnest care to save those in danger of being lost.
A house founded on rock withstands rain, floods and wind because its foundation is secure, and the storm reveals the danger of trusting one's own judgment and merely professing faith without sanctification by truth. A person whose faith and teaching are unsound, who trusts personal wisdom instead of receiving counsel and walking humbly with God and resting on Christ and His truth rather than own ideas, is in danger of having that foundation swept away when adversity tests it. Laying foundation on rock means yoking with Christ and being kept by God's power alone, making the aim high and digging deeper in thought and heart work, choosing God with undivided affection, making straight paths, putting away trifling, being watchful unto prayer, sober and serious yet cheerful, and building steady practical faith rather than following impulse. Being founded upon rock means taking decided position on the Lord's side for truth and righteousness, being diligent in home life, examining the heart to meet the Lord, opening the heart's door to Christ, and then drawing others to that same foundation. Those investigating truth need wise personal help to study God's Word diligently as counselor so they can build securely on a sure foundation that stands firm when tested.
A life grounded in divine grace withstands storms of temptation that overthrow character built without Christ's grace as on shifting sand. The rain, floods and winds beating on the house are the storm of God's wrath breaking on the world, when it will be terrible revelation for souls built on sand to find the house moving from under them, so full earnestness now is needed, distinct from fanaticism or enthusiasm. Not falling means a life built on sure rock stands firm through rain, floods, winds, storms, trials and temptation instead of collapsing like sand, kept safe amid storms and tempests by hearing and obeying Christ's Word. Those who accept God's Word as it reads without twisting Scripture build on the eternal Rock Christ Jesus and stand when trials come because the foundation is secure, and the rock that keeps standing is the Word studied and practiced, for feeling is no measure of advancement while studying and doing puts solid rock underfoot. Building on the Rock requires deeper spiritual work and transformation by God's Spirit, with character made steadfast by following God's Word, while a divided will leaves character on sand vulnerable to ruin. Falling on the Rock broken means humbling before God in repentance, confession and turning from sin, with self falling and dying on Christ the Rock so He can mold and fashion after the divine likeness.
