Peter Beside His Sick Mother-in-LawBible World

Matthew 8:14

And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever.

After leaving the synagogue while the people were still spell-bound by the casting out of the demon, Jesus went to Peter's house for a little rest, but there was no rest for the Son of Man. There He saw and was told that Peter's wife's mother lay bedridden, sick with a fever, described as a great fever. His sympathetic heart was at once moved to relieve her suffering, showing His tenderness and care for those who need sympathy and love.

He rebuked the disease and cured her by touching her hand, and the fever was removed and left her immediately at once. She rose from the sickbed at once, filled with joy and gratitude and praising God for His mercy. With willing hands she served food to the needs of Jesus and His disciples, ministering to those who had ministered to her.

As part of the chapter's account of healing work, the setting illustrates the uniting of the ministry of the Word with medical missionary work. His healing gives hope that the sick may be cured by His power.

Set beside Peter's self-confident claim of superior fidelity, his denial of his Lord, and his bitter repentance, the verse teaches against self-confidence and self-righteousness and calls to humility and tender forbearance toward the erring. Even those who have not honored the cause of God and show the deformity of sin are to be borne with, remembering how Jesus bears with sinners.
