Peter and Andrew Plead with Jesus for Peter's Mother-in-LawBible World

Matthew 8:15

And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them.

The healing took place in Peter's house, the fisherman's home at Capernaum, where Peter's wife's mother lay sick with a great fever. Jesus had come there for a little rest after leaving the synagogue while the people were still spellbound, and He found no rest there when He was told about her sickness. Moved by a sympathetic heart, He acted at once to relieve her suffering.

He healed her by touching her hand, upon which the fever left her. He also healed her by rebuking the fever, or the disease, which was removed from her at once. The cure was immediate and complete; the fever left at once and she arose immediately from bed and suffering.

She rose filled with joy and gratitude and praised God for His mercy. She then ministered with willing hands to the wants of Jesus and His disciples and those present, preparing food for them. Her service was a grateful response to the healing she had received.

The healing illustrates Christ's work as a healer, whose example joins the ministry of the Word with medical missionary work. Her recovery shows that Jesus could cure illness through a touch and gives hope that the same Jesus can heal the sick. The healing shows Jesus' tender care and power to banish fever and pain, restoring the sick to health and useful service.
