Now when Jesus saw great multitudes about him, he gave commandment to depart unto the other side.
Seeing the great crowds around Him, Jesus dismissed the multitude and gave command to depart to the other side of the sea, taking ship with His disciples to accompany Him. The command came after He had been teaching and healing uninterruptedly all day. The chapter in which the verse stands teaches how He united the ministry of the word with healing work.
The other side was desert-like in comparison with the shore being left, removed from the dwellings of men. He went there to find retirement and rest from the fatigue of labor, for Himself and His disciples. Even as they were moving off, a number of boats loaded with people followed Him because they desired to learn more concerning the doctrine He taught.
