Matthew 9:30

And their eyes were opened; and Jesus straitly charged them, saying, See that no man know it.

The opening of the blind eyes belongs to three miracles done after returning across the sea with the disciples to a great waiting crowd of rich and poor, high and low, Pharisees, doctors, lawyers, and the sick and afflicted who welcomed Him with joy to hear His teaching, witness His miracles, and entreat His mercy. Faint and weary with teaching and healing, He pitied their spiritual darkness and physical maladies and kept stopping to minister to their wants even while the people pressed on every side and nearly carried Him off His feet. The opening of blind eyes took place as part of that same compassionate work of teaching and healing.

Jesus restored sight to the two blind men in response to their faith after they affirmed their belief in His power to heal. As soon as their eyes were opened, He sternly and strictly charged them not to tell anyone and not to make the healing known or publicize the miracle. The same strict charge not to make the healing known belongs to the account of restoring sight to the blind men. They were unable to keep silent about their healing and, after leaving Him, disregarded His charge and disobeyed by spreading His fame throughout the country. Their disobedience after leaving added to the record that they spread His fame throughout the country.

Their spreading of His fame intensified prejudice against Him and added to the prejudice of His enemies. Their earlier address to Jesus as the Son of David identified Him as the promised Messiah and struck the priests and rabbis painfully, while their testimony about the healing made a strong impression on the multitude. The account illustrates His healing of the blind and His clear, simple teaching that is understandable even to children and the unlearned. The chapter containing the healing is instructive in caring for people of every class, including the poor and suffering.

The opening of the eyes of the blind was among the works of healing power that preceded His offering of Himself on the cross as the last sacrifice for humanity. The restoration of the blind men's sight gives confidence that Jesus can touch and heal eyes in answer to prayer.
