Matthew 9:7

And he arose, and departed to his house.

He arose at Christ's word in simple obedient faith, took up the couch on which he had been carried, and walked freely to his own house with no further request or display. Jesus had first lifted his burden of guilt by declaring his sins forgiven and restoring peace to his troubled mind, and only then reached and renewed his palsied body. His recovery was immediate, complete, and visible, with strength, health, and joyful countenance replacing suffering as a sign of salvation through mercy. His rising and going home visibly proved that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins and to heal, confirming the authority Jesus had just claimed. That same rising proves Christ will still heal physical and spiritual disease for those who come believing His word and calmly relying on His promise, a truth witnesses acknowledged by marveling and glorifying God.

The Healing Described

This verse belongs to the healing of the helpless, dying paralytic at Capernaum. His palsy followed a sinful life of dissipation and was felt as the penalty of transgression, with deep remorse deepening his suffering. He feared his sin made him unworthy to approach the pure Physician. Yet above all he longed for forgiveness and peace with God, trusting Jesus could heal him as He had healed other sinful, helpless sufferers, while hoping also for bodily relief.

His friends carried him to Jesus because he hoped for relief and forgiveness. They made urgent efforts to reach Him and pressed through the crowd gathered at the house where Jesus was teaching. His disciples sat near Him as they pressed forward.

Jesus first declared his sins forgiven, lifting the burden of sin and restoring his troubled mind to peace, hope, and joy. Only when the burden was lifted could his body be reached and healed. The healing of his body then became evident in renewed strength and movement, and he left glorifying God.

At Christ's command to arise and go home, the man at once obeyed in simple faith, receiving the words as new life. He made no further request and no noisy display but remained silently joyful. He rose, took up the couch or bed on which he had been carried, and departed to his own house. His doing so confirmed that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins.

His recovery was immediate, complete, and visible. He left under his own power and walked freely, carrying the couch on which he had been brought. His strength, health, and healthy appearance were restored, with peace and purity replacing signs of suffering. His restoration was a visible sign of salvation offered through mercy.

His restored strength and health brought great joy, wonder, and hope to his family. Their gratitude and praise glorified God through Christ. The healed man and his family responded with steadfast, unwavering faith and loyalty to Christ, who restores hope to the hopeless and strength to the afflicted.

Proof and Application

The rising and going home visibly proved that the Son of man has power on earth to forgive sins and to heal, confirming the authority just claimed. At the command the paralyzed man obeyed, rose from his bed, took up his bed and returned home, and his restored ability to walk and leave under his own power made that power visible in complete recovery. This was done by Jesus standing at the head of the human race, His divinity clothed with humanity. He is the great Physician with all power in heaven and earth, with absolute control over winds and waves, over men possessed with demons, with the keys of death and hell and with principalities and powers subject to Him.

Witnesses were filled with awe at his changed countenance and sudden strength with restored health, and were amazed and marveled, blessing God and glorifying God. This shows that His message of salvation and compassionate care for the guilty and suffering is worthy of trust. The miracle gave compelling evidence of authority to heal and forgive, which was recognized as power belonging to God alone. It defeated the purposes of the scribes and Pharisees, yet they responded with deeper hatred, unbelief, and intensified opposition.

The healing shows that the work of preaching truth and healing the sick belong together, giving a precious lesson from Christ's ministry for all who minister to the sick. It offers hope to the helpless by restoring hope to the hopeless and strength to the stricken, and it warns against condemning sufferers as though their affliction proved greater guilt. The fact that he arose and went to his house proves Christ will work today for those who come to Him for healing of physical and spiritual disease. It calls for greater faith that comes into His presence believing He will heal physical and spiritual infirmities, simply believing God's Word and calmly relying on His promise that what He has said He will perform, without needing to be wrought up into excitement, and when churches understand this wonderful thing, a history of experience is opened before them.
