Micah 1:12

For the inhabitant of Maroth waited carefully for good: but evil came down from the LORD unto the gate of Jerusalem.

The people of Maroth waited anxiously for good, yet calamity sent from the Lord came down to the very gate of Jerusalem. That calamity belongs to a vision of judgment in which settlement after settlement is laid waste until desolation reaches Jerusalem itself. Within that advance Samaria falls as the destruction moves on toward Jerusalem.

The destruction is the Lord coming forth out of His place amid terrible convulsions of nature. It was called forth by the sins of the house of Israel and the transgressions of Jacob. It belongs to a message of wrath and warning directed against the great social evils of the time, declaring that because of the sins of Israel Zion shall be plowed as a field and Jerusalem shall become heaps.
