Prophesy ye not, say they to them that prophesy: they shall not prophesy to them, that they shall not take shame.
The prophecy containing this verse was given during the reigns of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah. It was given at the same time as Isaiah. The verse records the people telling those who prophesy not to prophesy. It records their demand that the prophets stop prophesying.
They thereby rejected prophetic warnings. They did not want to hear messages exposing their sins. They turned away warnings that would expose their shame. Yet the prophecy to which the verse belongs very definitely foretells Christ's coming. It holds out wonderful promises to the repentant sinner.
