Micah 6:11

Shall I count them pure with the wicked balances, and with the bag of deceitful weights?

Dishonest measures in trade stand for all fraud, injustice and deceit, and no one who uses them can be reckoned clean or righteous no matter what service to God is claimed. The question is God's own expression of decided displeasure and abhorrence toward such dealing and toward the riches, violence, lies and short measure that go with it. It is part of His call to the city to hear His voice with wisdom, to learn what is good, and to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with Him. Its warning reaches beyond literal scales to every unjust act and twisted principle, so that even the smallest injustice defies His authority, weakens faith and confidence in right, and breaks the everlasting covenant. Daily business is therefore a test of character and belonging to God, and money gained by wronging a neighbor remains unlawful gain in heaven that cannot be made clean by giving it as an offering.

Meaning and Judgment

The wicked balances and the bag of deceitful weights are dishonest measures in trade, standing for fraud, injustice and deceit, and those who use them cannot be counted pure or righteous, whatever service to God they profess. They condemn scheming to profit at the expense of others and making merchandise of fellow men by exploiting them, as incompatible with justice, integrity and purity. Daily business conduct with false weights and deceitful balances reveals lack of integrity and tests character and whether a person truly belongs to God.

The question expresses God's decided displeasure and abhorrence of such dealing, for fraud and sharp dealing are a common sin that must never be brought into any line of His work. Nothing in His work is to savor of a grasping, selfish spirit, and any advantage gained by selfish, unjust dealing will be turned aside, with sure punishment upon those who persist in thus misrepresenting His character. He condemns the treasures of wickedness in the house of the wicked and the scant measure that is abominable, exposing rich men full of violence and inhabitants speaking lies with a deceitful tongue in their mouth. Therefore He declares He will make sick in smiting and make desolate because of sins.

The verse belongs to the Lord's voice crying unto the city, calling men of wisdom to see His name and to hear the rod and who has appointed it. It declares that God has showed what is good and requires dealing justly and loving mercy and walking humbly with God.

It rebukes, in the setting of Micah 6:9-16, people who received great light and opportunity yet failed to understand God's dealings with them or to come into right relation with Him. Though able to reason from cause to effect and to recognize His dealings, they stubbornly ignored His warnings and corrections, so that His reproofs became ineffective. Those who dismiss His punishments will face His judgments when it is too late to repent.

Its language reaches beyond literal scales to other acts of injustice represented by dishonest weights, even when those exact practices are not committed, reflecting perverted principles and damaging trust. The wicked balances and deceitful weights stand for unjust acts and perverted principles of violence, lies and deceit, so that even the least injustice rejects the authority of God, weakens faith, destroys confidence in justice and equity, and imperils interest in the atonement and redemption Christ has undertaken. Such dealing will bring God's work to purify His church by turning and overturning and purging His floor in the institutions called by His name. Dishonest trade by false balances and weights belongs to transgression of God's law and everlasting covenant, included among prophecies describing the world's sinful condition just before the Lord's second coming.

Honesty in Business Life

Daily business conduct tests character and shows whether people truly belong to God, for dishonest measures reveal lack of integrity whatever service to God is professed. Fraud and sharp dealing are a common sin that God abhors, and they must never be brought into any line of His work, with nothing about His work savoring of a grasping, selfish spirit. Any advantage gained by selfish, unjust dealing will be turned aside by God, who will surely punish those who persist in thus misrepresenting His character. The wicked balances and bag of deceitful weights cannot be counted pure, condemning all who scheme to profit at others' expense, gain advantage by exploiting fellow men, and make merchandise of them as incompatible with justice, integrity and purity. Money gotten by wronging a neighbor, whether believer or unbeliever, is recorded in heaven as unlawful gain, and attempting to compromise with God by bringing it to His treasury as an offering cannot make it pure but only deceives the giver.

The condemnation reaches every commercial transaction, including real estate speculation, sanitarium management, and trade that takes money from men and women and leaves them poor. Such false dealing, falsehood and robbery ruin the souls of those who practice them, are recorded in the book in heaven, and unfit them for church membership and for the city whose builder and maker is God. Those who claim to be church members must renounce this speculation and suffering-causing business, break relationship with it, stand in integrity even if it costs life, and never sell the soul to do an unfair action to one soul.

The question reproves believers in Battle Creek who take counsel with men who have not been walking in the counsel of the Lord, whose medical missionary work is not acceptable to God while a man stands at its head who is continually filling his mind with sophistries and deceptions. It shows God's decided displeasure at iniquity practiced in trade, in dishonest dealings of brother with brother that weaken faith and destroy confidence in justice and equity. The wicked balances and deceitful weights stand for unjust acts and perverted principles of violence, lies and deceit that have been and still are done in church institutions and whole conferences, even where literal fraud has not been committed, leavening them throughout. Practicing even the least injustice rejects the authority of God and imperils interest in the atonement and redemption Christ has undertaken, and it will bring God's work to purify His church by turning and overturning and purging His floor in the institutions called by His name.
