Micah 6:8

He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the LORD require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God?

God has already shown people what is good and what He requires, which is to act fairly, to love kindness, and to live in humble closeness with Him. No multitude of sacrifices, gifts, ceremonies, or outward correctness can take the place of this or buy His favor, cover wrong, or atone for sin. This life flows from sanctified faith in Christ that purifies the heart and transforms the character, for without that faith and humble walk even strict justice and mercy cannot please God. To act fairly and love mercy means honest dealing in all business, refusal to cheat, oppress, or exploit any person, fair and compassionate treatment of workers, and active help to the needy, the oppressed, and the wronged with restitution where wrong was done. To walk humbly with God means coming to Him with the whole heart in dependence, submission, trust, and obedience, refusing pride and self-exaltation, and this humble walk brings His presence, guidance, strength, and safety.

Verse Text and Setting

He has already made known what is good and what is required: to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with God. This is not a new disclosure but what people already know, set against trust in costly offerings to purchase favor — not calves, burnt offerings, thousands of rams, rivers of oil, or even the firstborn for transgression, but a humble contrite heart that gratefully receives the free gift and gives freely in turn. Neglect of human need and refusal to help make even costly offerings and grand displays of generosity abominable.

It was given as God’s plain and positive answer in the apostasy of Judah and Israel to those asking what to bring before Him. It belongs to the Lord’s controversy with His people, in which He pleads by recalling bringing them up out of Egypt and redeeming them from servitude, sending Moses, Aaron and Miriam before them, and preserving them from Balak’s counsel and Balaam’s answer from Shittim to Gilgal in order to make known His righteousness. Failure in this requirement is departure from God. It is the Lord’s voice crying to the city, with the rod He has appointed, and that rod has come upon His people for this departure. In that setting it also rebukes taking counsel with men who do not walk in the Lord’s counsel, and condemns work carried forward under a leader filling his mind with sophistries and deceptions as unacceptable to God.

It was directed to a rebellious people to teach that obedience to God is better than sacrifice. It therefore calls for acknowledgment and repentance of disobedience and departure from truth and plans, rather than blaming God for consequences caused by their own choices and wrongdoing. It is connected with following the path God has marked out: those who reject the light and blessings He gives, act perversely and show ingratitude cannot expect Him to fulfill His promises or continue to encourage them. It is also included among prophecies describing the world’s condition before the second coming, when iniquity abounds as people transgress God’s law and break the everlasting covenant.

Faith and True Religion

God does not accept multiplied sacrifices, offerings, gifts, penances, ceremonies or outward orthodoxy as a way to purchase favor, atone for sin, or cover injustice and self-interest, for He has already shown what is good and requires just doing, loving mercy and humble walking with Him instead of calves, thousands of rams, rivers of oil, or even the firstborn for transgression. Costly offerings and grand displays of generosity coming from a heart that neglects human need and refuses to help are abominable to Him, and what He seeks comes from a humble contrite heart that gratefully receives His free gift and then gives freely in turn. Hard rigid orthodoxy without contrition, tenderness and love is worthless and a stumbling block, while the requirement is lived out in helping the oppressed and burdened with tender pity, meeting repentance with sympathy rather than jealousy or censure.

Outward justice and mercy alone are insufficient without sanctified faith leading to humble walk with God, for without faith in Christ character and conduct are not sanctified in motive and purpose and cannot please Him. Through such faith people appreciate God's character as revealed in Christ's earthly life, display those same attributes, show Christ present within, and prove genuine citizenship in His kingdom. The verse thus answers the soul's cry for justification and harmony with God, with what is required flowing from faith working by love to purify the soul and transform the character, a lesson given centuries beforehand against legal religion.

The verse teaches practical godliness repeating enduring counsel to Israel against formalism that forgets mercy, calling not for abundant burnt offerings or other outward religious acts but for acting justly, loving mercy and walking humbly with God. Above all God's people are to embody this in Spirit-sanctified lives to reveal practical Christianity and show struggling souls what faithful living means. What the Father asks is justice, mercy and humility as reasonable service of good deeds, pure living, tenderness to need, reverence, trust and prayer for light to see the Master's footsteps in daily ways. He asks not for scourge or knife but for the calm beauty of an ordered life whose breathing is unworded praise, rooted in faith that God is good.

True Bible religion exalts God and humbles people, brings eternity near, interweaves with everyday concerns and leads to faithfulness in all things. It begins with heartfelt conviction of sin, hatred of sin and deep earnest growing desire for Christ's righteousness and unfading life, and constantly teaches to act fairly, cherish kindness and live in humble closeness with God, which produces strength and decision of character rather than softness, feebleness and indecision. What the Lord requires is to live rightly before Him in this life by forming a Christlike character through practicing goodness and mercy and following Christ in self-denial and sacrifice.

The verse expresses God's character and what He delights in, including lovingkindness, judgment and righteousness, calling for a meek Christian spirit rather than proud, hard or exacting one, shown in treatment of others and conduct of responsibilities including leadership and service. God will punish persistence in misrepresenting His character. The verse is true peculiarity unlike the world, meaning separation from all approach to iniquity, truthfulness and strict honesty, patience under provocation, chaste holy thoughts with pure holy words, select speech with heavenly conversation, freedom from pride of opinion, low self-estimate esteeming others better than self, and courteous kindly pure holy refined ennobled Christlike character shining as lights without spot and blameless. It forbids odd ways, coarse manners and eccentricities made as crosses to show separation.

God's law calls people to deal justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God, and obeying it brings them under their Creator and Redeemer's guidance and forms them into a pure wise people whose joy is to live by those principles. God Himself deals justly and loves mercy, where justice means each receives reward or punishment according to deeds, reaping what is sown, while mercy is His priceless grace offered through His Son as sacrifice for sin. Redemption shows justice and mercy in harmony, and though He wills all to be saved He does not force obedience, leaving each free to accept or refuse mercy. God requires justice, mercy and love of Him, and these qualities must be brought more fully into the work of His people, so that His work is marked by strict justice, mercy and the love of God.

True repentance is revealed by doing justice, loving mercy and walking humbly, leading when another was wronged to full restitution so the guilty may be cleared from guilt. Restored people in fellowship continue in repentance, confession and restitution and resolve to do good to one another, which fulfills the law of Christ and brings blessing and healing to the relationship. Such repentance involves conversion of heart, soul and spirit cleansing impurities of sentiment and principle that should never have existed, repenting of and forever forsaking the spirit that led to unjust acts before sin is blotted out, with a healing not measured by money value. Such acts of repentance and restitution do not atone for sin, since only Jesus' blood can atone and cleanse the sinner.

Doing justly, loving mercy and walking humbly are fitting fruits of God's law written in the heart and unfailing evidence of true sanctification, true religion, and holy heart, life and character. They root out covetousness, which is idolatry, envy and love of the world, bring mind and will under Christ's authority and obedience as a pleasure, and give a holy life power to convict the world. Rank or teaching position does not prove it, but words, spirit and character reveal whether one has put on Christ.

Doing Justly at Work

To do justly forbids exploiting people through unfair plans and dishonest business practices, for such conduct violates what is good that God has shown. Doing justly includes acquiring money without cheating or oppressing a neighbor, and wealth gained dishonestly remains unlawful gain before God that cannot be made acceptable by giving it to His treasury, rather than costly offerings compensating for wrongdoing.

Doing justly and loving mercy require honest and fair dealings that include not oppressing workers or withholding their wages, and justice and mercy must mark both employers and workers rather than offerings or outward worship alone. Failure to act with justice and mercy toward workers in hardship is contrary to God's word and the Spirit of Christ and needs repentance, and those guilty are to be pitied rather than answered with retaliation. Doing justly and loving mercy must shape dealings with every person and not only a favored few, meaning treating workers faithfully, paying worthy and efficient workers reasonable wages, and not burdening them with sacrifices while resources are spent on institutional expansion, with mercy and justice extending even to the humblest worker. The requirement to deal justly and mercifully means acting in business transactions with love and benevolence, including looking after faithful unselfish workers who might otherwise deprive themselves of things they need, and failing to do so is unjust.

Doing justly and loving mercy require being changed by the truth so that ambition and selfishness are removed, rejecting covetousness, treating fellow workers fairly, and not taking excessive wages from the treasury when others labor as hard under difficult conditions for much less. Love for God and neighbor gives a sensitive conscience that recognizes when one's gain deprives others, and such selfishness is contrary to the Spirit's sanctifying work and places spiritual life and eternal destiny in danger. The Lord deals justly, loves mercy, and His ways are equal, and that character condemns selfish grasping for all that is possible in wages and royalties while oppressing others, and the confusion and devising of those whose discernment is not clear and whose ways are not equal. God does not sanction such selfishness and avarice in business transactions, and these things will one day be seen in their true bearing.

God's cause is free from every taint of injustice and seeks no advantage by depriving members of His family of their individuality or rights. Applied to publishing houses in dealing with God's workers, this forbids wrong business principles, selfish narrow plans, oppressive restrictions, crowding down those God is using, arbitrary authority, selfishness and overreaching, even when urged as necessary for success and advancement, and to Him all such practices are abhorrent. Those who have entered into other men's labors in the publishing work are to labor conscientiously as men employed to do the work entrusted to their hands instead of gathering control into finite hands and driving measures by human wisdom and stubborn will, for even those with greatest position and authority remain under God whose sovereignty is supreme, and these duties apply regardless of position. Control of the large publishing interests at the heart of the work cannot be vested wholly in those who show little experience in the things of God and no spiritual discernment, and mismanagement by erring men must not shake confidence of churches depending on that work. To lay hands upon God's publishing work to place a human mold and superscription upon it is as dangerous to the soul and disastrous to the cause as Uzzah putting forth his hand to steady the ark, failure to deal justly and humbly is proved by works, and whatever a man's responsibility, even authority as great as Ahab's, God is above him.

Just dealing is required and unfair action, false dealing, falsehood and robbery in business are condemned, especially buying and selling land and speculation that makes men and women poor and causes suffering. Those who continue in such unfair transactions ruin their own souls and unfit themselves to enter the city whose builder and maker is God, every transaction is written in the record book in heaven, integrity is required even if it costs life with refusal to be swayed to an unjust action or to place injustice in an uncertain light, for to do injustice to one soul is to do it to Christ in the person of His saints. Scheming to deny others a fair chance and make profit from them violates the justice and mercy required, and dishonest and unjust conduct generally stands condemned. In a property sale, keeping the commandments meant not claiming an extra four thousand dollars belonging to the other person because the seller had done nothing to increase the property's value.

Fairness and kindness are required in everyday dealings especially in business, and failure dishonors God and His cause. Lying, cheating, exaggerating, giving way to anger, and boastful self-praise break the requirement and make professed believers stumbling blocks giving sinners excuse to reject truth, and defending truth without a right spirit violates it. The requirements apply to business dealings and every interaction: dealing fairly and honestly, showing compassion, and treating others as one would wish to be treated, with strict honesty in even the smallest dealings and with mercy and love for God as weightier matters not to be neglected while observing lesser duties. What is required in conduct is dealing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God, so that a transaction acceptable under civil law can still be wrong before God and receive a different verdict in judgment, calling for fair and merciful treatment of a brother including not using advantage to oppress him, which God does not justify.

Acting justly and loving mercy includes being truthful and righteous in business dealings, being strictly honest, never deceiving or misrepresenting even in a small matter, and keeping an agreement even when it causes personal loss. Changing plans to escape a promise shows unreliability, and yielding in small transactions can lead to yielding in larger ones, for God requires justice and mercy joined with truth and righteousness. Bible religion is put into practice by treating others fairly and mercifully, so gaining even a small advantage through double dealing violates the requirement and dishonors God and the truth. In dealing with one supposed to be wrong, doing justly means investigating thoroughly, laboring with the person first in a kind Christian manner, giving him a chance to explain and answer, and not charging dishonesty, publishing failings, or condemning on appearance, suspicion and hearsay without positive ground. Loving mercy in such discipline means working with love, sympathy, pitying tenderness and prayer as a nursing father to save him, not in a hard harsh overbearing judge-like spirit, and failure reveals great deficiency in Christian charity and wise discipline.

Acting justly and showing mercy means dealing fairly, refusing crooked or exploitative conduct, and correcting wrongs, and those who fail risk losing the Spirit of God. Doing what is right and loving mercy are required duties, and failure includes using unfair schemes and neglecting people who need help. Doing what is right must be joined with love and mercy, so in correcting wrongdoers justice requires faithful reproof while mercy requires tender compassion suited to each person, and needless severity fails to hold them together. A steward must make his interests one with his Master's by acting with justice and mercy in business, hurting and wronging no one, for every case comes before God as Ruler of the universe to be weighed, and anyone whose unjust dealings stand unrepented receives TEKEL and is barred from the city of God.

In medical institutions acting justly and mercifully means following biblical principles rather than worldly pricing practices, with charges fair and proportionate to the work and patients not billed exorbitantly for brief operations. Doing what is right and loving mercy belong together with justice and love side by side, meaning in responsible work and business dealings acting with strict honesty and preserving order while showing compassion, mercy and forbearance. Acting justly and mercifully applies to fair distribution of funds so that neither justice nor mercy is neglected. Acting justly is required, refusing to correct unjust dealings and do justice displeases the Lord, and those managing institutions are to represent Christ in spirit and work. God's way requires acting justly, showing mercy, and loving, combining both in work while keeping the way of the Lord, applying especially to how those who have gone wrong are treated.

Just dealing and humble conduct before God are required, and fraud and dishonest measures violate it and are abominable in His sight. Doing justly and loving mercy are ways to serve God urged in dealing with others amid reproach and difficulty. People are to deal justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God, and these duties are violated when people follow own imagination, uncontrolled will and passion in ways that harm others. The rich violated the requirement by gaining wealth through breaking God's law, neglecting the hungry and naked, and through pride, self-exaltation and seeking others' homage in contrast to walking humbly with God. Earthly riches and pleasures could not make them rich toward God, so when judgment came their possessions vanished and they regretted the outcome without repenting of wickedness. When God entrusts responsibilities He requires obedience to His law and just dealing, realizing the Lord beholds all dealings and will punish every unjust oppressive action, giving opportunities to become one with Christ and with Him, so those who walk in fear of God meditating on His character become more like Christ daily, while those who choose not to know God will be ostentatious and boastful.

Loving Mercy Toward Others

Doing justly and loving mercy mean rejecting racial prejudice, seeking the oppressed, lifting up the fallen, and helping those in need, including the colored people who had suffered enslavement and injustice. What is good and required is just conduct, love of mercy, and a humble walk with God rather than reliance on offerings or religious ritual, and it is lived out by helping the oppressed and burdened and showing tender pity to people suffering in sin. Those who know they are saved by the Father's love meet repentance with sympathy, not jealousy or censure. It is the voice of God to every soul, requiring losing no opportunity to perform deeds of mercy, tender forethought and Christian courtesy for the burdened and the oppressed. Where no more can be done, it requires speaking words of courage and hope to those unacquainted with God, who are reached most easily by sympathy and love.

God requires more than offerings or other outward acts of worship, for people must act justly, love mercy, and live humbly with Him, and loving mercy must be shown in deeds including kindness and courtesy toward strangers and relief for the poor, without fraud, oppression, or exploitation. True religion requires doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly before God, and these qualities appear in defending the poor, caring for orphans and widows, and relieving those in need. They follow from bringing thoughts, words, actions, appetites, and passions under God's will, since true religion leads toward holiness and perfection, and stopping short of submission to God leaves a person unfit for heaven. The verse draws the line laid down by the God of justice for dealing with fellow men and shows what makes a person a Christian and what pure religion and an upright, holy life are. It means acting fairly toward others, cherishing kindness, and living humbly with God, which requires honoring the rights belonging to every human being as God's purchased heritage, refusing to turn anyone from those rights for selfish ends, refusing double dealing, and refusing to take even the smallest unfair advantage, since service joined with such wrongdoing God will not accept and it dishonors Him and the truth.

Faithful workers are described by dealing justly, loving mercy, and helping those in need, with service to God marked by steadfastness to truth, self-denial, and care for others, and they should in turn be treated considerately, kindly, and generously. Just and merciful conduct applies to men who have labored and sacrificed in God's service in that they deal justly, love mercy, and help the needy, and their fellow workers should likewise treat these older ministers fairly, kindly, and generously, and appreciate and support them. Walking humbly with God belongs with a life of mercy, for genuine acts of mercy toward the needy reflect it, and the Lord promises to be with, help, and strengthen one who walks humbly, as seen in Edson White's acts of genuine mercy toward the needy.

Meaning of Humble Walk

Walking humbly means coming to God in humility with the whole heart, submitting the soul, believing exactly what His Word says, being willing to be taught, humbling self before Him and trusting in Him alone, and carrying His work in His way in harmony with others, and those who do so have God walking with them, revealing Himself to them, and they see His salvation. It is a way of life inseparably joined to seeing His salvation.
Walking humbly includes refusing pride and self-exaltation, accepting the duties and place God assigns and faithfully doing even lowly work, using the gifts given and trusting God with place and interests for greater service in due time. Safety lies in not glorying in ability, wealth, power, wisdom or anything apart from Christ and not taking the honor and authority belonging to God, since pride seeks control over others and oppresses them.
It means not denying wrongs but acknowledging sins, repenting and being converted, for pride that refuses to acknowledge mistakes keeps a person from being accepted no matter what position is held, while all who confess and forsake sins and trust wholly in the merits of Jesus will be declared worthy of salvation before the world and before the holy angels. It brings His presence and means unreserved surrender without self-exaltation, and when one engaged in the Lord's work exalts self he loses the strength that comes from that surrender. It means living in dependence by waiting on the Lord for renewed strength, finding life and salvation in Him, and bringing Him into life and character until wholly His.
It brings victory in the mighty conflict with self and sin, and victories there belong only to those who so walk, bringing victories in the life of faith as part of doing what is good. God's way is to do justice, seek mercy, and walk humbly with Him, and those who live this way are welcomed into His presence and fitted for the society of heavenly angels. It means living in close dependence by distrusting self, trusting the great Helper, keeping Him near for counsel, and following Him as Enoch did, including hiding self in Christ, exalting Jesus, and giving Him the whole heart and undivided allegiance.
People need God to teach them to deal justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him. In facing difficulties that obstruct useful service, humility means hiding self in Jesus, which shields from the enemy's attacks, while a consistent life earns respect and sincere counsel can persuade. It means living with meekness and lowliness of mind, exalting Jesus without holding exalted ideas of oneself.
It is the way to rise to true greatness, and the required humility is not forced but genuine, coming from a true sense of human inefficiency and inadequacy and of God's greatness, involving earnest striving to make the soul temple a dwelling place where God delights to dwell and pleasing to Him. Doing what is right, loving mercy, and walking humbly matter more than gaining position, influence or honor from people, and seeking worldly distinction instead of these duties puts spirituality at risk. What is required of Christians is to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, and living by this command continually testifies that God sent His Son into the world.
God calls people to deal justly and walk humbly, and walking humbly means trusting Him rather than treating human approval as decisive, with Christ alone as helper and refuge in every difficulty. The Lord calls His people to walk humbly with Him, and unity must not be used to support anyone's evil course of action. Keeping the way of the Lord means doing justice, loving mercy, and walking humbly, including being pure in heart and full of human kindness while living in the world without belonging to it.
It is seen in a life of true dignity and noble character, loving fellow believers, treating them with brotherly love, kindness and courtesy, and working for one another's good, showing that God's truth and law guide the heart, whose principles of peace prevent discord and strife, with God's grace alone making people holy and keeping them holy. It means following the leadings of the Holy Spirit, valuing His favor more highly than everything else, and holding to Jesus as best Friend and constant Guardian. Brethren are required to so walk, and walking humbly means not tearing one another in pieces.
It is central to greatness, meaning relying on Christ rather than self-confidence, seeking strength through private communion with Him, and accepting honor without exalting self or putting down others, which reflects the Spirit of the Lord, whereas pride and belittling others show the Spirit departing and leave a person to own wisdom. A person should walk humbly by continually asking in faith for God to guide every thought and control every impulse, no matter how much spiritual light or divine favor has been received, living in continual dependence in which every thought and impulse needs His direction and control, to be pleaded for in faith. God has shown what is good and requires acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly, and walking humbly brings His help, guidance, strength and peace even for those who are weak and entrusted with responsibility.
The humble walk means meeting difficulties through faith in the living God, with careful consideration of how one's words and actions affect others. God's people are to walk humbly before Him, and the church in this generation especially needs humility and has nothing to boast of. For young men it means serving God with courage and integrity while rejecting impurity, sensuality, falsity and wickedness and remaining free from them.
God requires people to walk humbly with Him, and this humility applies to all His servants whatever their position or work. It is essential to a safe and holy life, meaning having lowly views of self, submitting to God's will, and depending on Christ rather than self-confidence, in which humility God can work through human effort and make His strength effective in weakness. God has shown what is good and requires living justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly, and walking humbly means relying on Him in faithful service, as He continues to use and strengthen such a person for the appointed work.
It is part of the life God requires, meaning following the Lord and learning from Him daily, through the Holy Spirit giving power to reflect Christ's character in words and actions and show the world a better way. It means recognizing dependence on Him for every capability, opportunity and privilege, and education shaped by divine grace and the Great Teacher subdues pride and passion and leads to this humble dependence and elevates in moral value with God, while education without grace produces pride, vanity and bigotry. It includes carefully considering how one's words and actions affect others and meeting difficulties through faith in the living God, as part of what God requires.
It means living in dependence on Him and working in the spirit of Christ, laying burdens on God as the great Burden-bearer, with expectation of triumph in His presence and communion with His love. It is staying close at His side to walk and work with Him while He teaches how to overcome temptation, and even in fallen nature a person can do all God expects through help provided by walking and working and living by faith in the Son of God, with a way of escape with every temptation coming by walking humbly. It is part of what God requires and calls for lasting reformation from actions founded on wrong principles, meaning turning away from actions wrong in principle and making a decisive, lasting reformation.
God's people are called to walk humbly by consecrating themselves wholly to the Lord rather than being caught up in worldly commercialism and chance, and serving in the work of Christ's kingdom. It means looking away from human praise and working for Christ rather than seeking attention, honor or distinction for oneself, calling for steady purpose and willingness to labor and sacrifice even in obscurity. The life of everyone with a living connection with God who works together with Him shows truth as it is in Jesus changing the mind so divine power works through human action, producing fair dealing, compassionate kindness and humble fellowship with God, including sharing God's merciful compassionate care for His creatures without regard to race, recognizing one common Father and all as brothers, guarding the good of others so missionary effort succeeds.
Safety lies in walking humbly, meaning guarding against self-sufficiency and self-confidence, keeping self out of sight, and seeking a daily living experience with God, because a person's only safety lies in this humble walk. What is required is just conduct, love of mercy, and a humble walk, which in medical missionary work means those taking that name pledge to serve with humility, mercy and love for God, helping restore the divine image in humanity. True education consists in walking humbly, the Word of God opposes education shaped by human ideas, and keeping God's law is the highest education.
It means trusting Him and following His leading, for He is the believer's helper, living in humble trust in Him. Walking humbly before God is urgent because time is very short, life is uncertain, and probation may close at an unknown moment, and those who walk humbly will be allowed to end their labors with joy. It is part of living the truth not merely professing it, safeguards against selfishness and unrecognized sin gaining control and leading into Satan's snares, and calls for continual watchfulness and prayer, rejecting inherited or acquired habits that draw away from following Jesus and copying His example, being essential to safety from sin and Satan's deceptions lest selfishness and hidden sin gain control and lead astray.
It is a fitting and required way to live before Him. It means having the proud spirit abased by gaining mastery over ambitious pride and desire for self-exaltation and self-worship which caused Satan's downfall, holding to repentance instead of forgetting it since returning to pride separates further from God, and realizing need for daily conversion and receiving a daily fresh supply of grace without which one will stumble and fall and at last be left joined to idols. What is good is the old-fashioned religion that leads a person to walk humbly in active service, grasping the theory of truth but not stopping there, cooperating with God by using all entrusted capabilities and gifts in His service, spending much time searching the Scriptures and with God in prayer, thereby receiving divine power to understand the sacred art of saving souls.
Walking humbly keeps a person from running into the fire of fanaticism and from drifting into formalism that freezes his own soul and others' souls, and brings an awakened intellect into his work. It means recognizing that honor and responsibility come from God not self, calling for humility rather than superiority by not exalting self or devaluing fellow workers, but bearing God-given honor without becoming proud and remaining faithful to God and others, since even great responsibility, success and honor are gifts from God not grounds for superiority, and a superior domineering spirit risks losing God's Spirit and being left to own wisdom. It means relying on Him in faith, and He enables those who do so to carry out His righteous will and become a blessing to others.
It means each worker should seek the Lord personally through prayer and study of the Word, depend on Him for guidance, and sincerely seek to know duty rather than rely on self-important human authority. Pressing together and living in humility means making Him the only hope instead of trusting in man or relying on human strength. Christians are called to walk humbly with God who is their strength, including gaining mastery over self and giving spiritual things ascendancy over temporal things, since present and future happiness depend on it.
It means relying on Christ rather than exalting self, and without that humility and reliance even people who have spoken messages of righteousness by faith can become spiritually blind. It means faithfully serving in the place where He stations you, with the Lord's blessing accompanying this humility and such faithfulness helping others. People should walk humbly, and this humble life should also influence others and lead them heavenward.
It is what God requires, and since human beings are prone to trust own weak wisdom, seek prominence, and think they can plan better than others, humility means resisting that self-reliance and ambition. It is the way to receive light from Him and calls for dependence on God rather than self-sufficiency or unsanctified independence.

Humble Walk in Service

To walk humbly with God is to do one's own work with the simplicity of Jesus Christ instead of faultfinding and dwelling on others' wrongs in the church to cover one's own, getting self out of the way, giving Christ a chance, and coming to God just as needy as one is to partake of the divine nature, whereupon God works wondrous things for His people. It requires decided reformation by those who have united in a wrong course and by leading brethren who must judge righteously and deal mercifully, enthroning truth in the heart to rule in righteousness and then continuing to walk humbly forever, which is the only hope for church institutions, and God will save all who imitate His character in this way. For conference presidents and others in responsibility it means seeking and receiving God's counsel as a first qualification, serving with meekness, humility, zeal and integrity rather than treating own judgment as infallible or controlling other workers, and needing wisdom from God to deal justly and to love and show mercy to everyone met, not only a few. For ministers and servants of God it means treating others with pity, compassion, tenderness and faithful shepherd care, serving with faith, hope and love, caring tenderly for Christ's people, helping people where they are weak rather than burdening them with needless criticism or censure, which is essential to fruitful ministry.

For college professors, teachers and those in charge of schools, walking humbly means feeling constant dependence on God, having His fear and love in the heart, drawing wisdom and knowledge from above while doing work in this world, not letting self obtain mastery, letting God's Spirit control, being guided by the Holy Spirit and taught of God, seeking counsel of men of prayer, feeling responsibility for youth, and making religion attractive so sacred influence goes forth to meet moral darkness for salvation, which matters even more than business ability though doing one's best in practical duties is included. In dealing with youth shaped by neglect or harsh discipline, justice and mercy must go together with wisdom from God to act justly while showing mercy. Those who decide cases must learn meekness and lowliness from Christ while united with Him, show kindness and pity to those who erred, recognize own fallibility, and seek God's help to remove character defects to meet the divine standard, for only so can they act justly and mercifully.

For all, high or low, especially those in command, it means putting away selfish narrow notions to be noble, broad and Christlike, giving time to personal religious culture in Christ's school to learn meekness and lowliness to find rest, training self before training others, excusing nothing in self that would be condemned in another, never making those under them feel oppression, treating workers as Christ's purchased property under one Master and taking orders from Christ, working as He worked in love, and giving cheerful encouraging words as brethren while keeping the moral tone elevated. In councils, board meetings, business arrangements and departments of work it rejects close, sharp, hard unsympathetic dealing after worldly policy and requires dealing justly and loving mercy with true courtesy as in Christ's life, a noble, generous, Christlike spirit of kindness, compassion and love that does justice to both work and worker, learned by sitting daily at Christ's feet, yoking with Him and incorporating His love into every branch, with meekness and lowliness learned from Christ preparing people for these duties. Those handling sacred things and the Lord's goods must deal justly, love mercy and walk humbly, coming into right relation with God, acting fairly with His goods, humbling themselves, confessing sins, having hearts cleansed of selfishness, and serving faithfully to enjoy His favor.

Those representing truth are to correct another's fault with kindness and love, making facts clear to the person concerned rather than leaving them ignorant or spreading accusations to others. The verse is to be carefully studied and practiced especially by those entrusted with responsibility as examples, since inward qualities matter more than lavish sacrifices, and its way is to be learned and taught to children by parents through instruction and example, with parents governing themselves and showing tender Christlike consistency because children imitate them, for restraining and cautioning children is not enough. In home and daily life the qualities take practical form in cultivated love, sympathy, tenderness and kind speech especially within the home, a life kept pure and kind while lifting up Jesus rather than self in serving others, and faithful living by just dealings and humble walk honors Christ and bears witness without need for eloquence or prominence in religious services.

Doing justice, loving mercy and walking humbly is the way to serve God in helping others who have gone wrong, learned when the Holy Spirit works on the heart, and marks those who share Christ's sufferings and will share His glory, where humility and faithfulness matter more than popularity or highest place. Walking humbly is part of required life meaning setting the heart in order, overcoming self, guarding against Satan's devices, bringing thoughts, words, actions, appetites and passions under God's will, defending the poor, caring for orphans and widows and relieving the needy, and living in harmony with Jesus after His example in words, spirit and conduct, resulting in deep change and refined character toward holiness and perfection, without which one is unfit for heaven. Walking humbly shapes practical choices so that buildings and furnishings serve the work without needless expense or appearance of wealth, rejecting display requiring large sums and using resources with economy, refusing to spend large sums merely to create appearance of success, since such display is a destructive burden.

The verse rebukes taking counsel with men not walking in the Lord's counsel and condemns medical missionary work carried under a leader filling his mind with sophistries and deceptions as unacceptable to God, as the Lord's voice crying in the city, and its call applies to Battle Creek where its demands expose work and counsel not right with God. God requires people to do duty humbly, deal justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him and work conscientiously, which applies to workers entrusted with responsibility to labor conscientiously and not impose their own plans without the cooperation of God's people, and even to those entrusted with authority whose position does not place them above God whose sovereignty is supreme. People in positions of responsibility must not act as rulers over others, but should put away selfishness and greed and walk humbly with God in Christlike conduct.

Doing justice and judgment, keeping the way of the Lord, keeping the fear of the Lord ever before them, and walking humbly with God must be patiently taught to children by firm, kind, daily restraining influence after Abraham's example, to restrain self-gratification and self-indulgence, strengthen solid well-balanced noble character, and train them to deny selfish desires and do good to others rather than seek outward display. What God requires of men and women who direct and do His special work of uplifting and saving human beings is to be thoroughly converted, loving God and walking before Him in all humility, with discernment, keen foresight and good judgment, so they can be effective agencies in His hand for His object, for humble devoted people can be effective agents in uplifting and saving others. God's faithful servants are the kind of people who act justly, love mercy, and help where help is needed. God requires dealing justly with everyone and walking humbly with Him, as part of serving others beginning with those nearest at home. A person is called to walk humbly with God, and a minister's work and speech are to be marked by this humble conduct.

Walking humbly with God is part of what God requires and means following where the Master leads and obeying His word, which is the only path of safety and protection from deception and wrong principles. It is part of the good life God requires, calling for continual learning in the Lord's way and careful speech that does not trouble or discourage others. It is part of what God requires, to be lived out in carrying out ministry, a required way of life that makes ministry fruitful. It includes praying daily for help and speaking of God's love with kind encouraging words, depending on God's power and expressing His love with speech shaped by awareness that the Holy Spirit is present.

Walking humbly with God is required of everyone from highest to lowest, meaning recognizing personal faults, confessing sins, and submitting human will to God's will rather than acting from self-sufficiency or condemning others self-righteously, which humble dependence is necessary for steady progress and respectful dealings with others. It means relying on Him, and as John does so the Lord will lead and guide him. It is required and worthwhile, meaning resisting bitterness and accusations amid disagreement, treating others with care, and remembering each person walks in God's sight. It means depending on Him as teacher rather than relying on other people for instruction, and God gives wisdom, sanctification and righteousness to those who walk humbly with Him.

God requires acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with Him, and walking humbly in Christ's way means subduing self and following Christ rather than shaping experience by worldly standards, trusting Him rather than relying on self-sufficiency. It means putting entire trust in Him as strength and efficiency, rather than trusting in people or relying on human power. It is the only safety when facing spiritual danger, calling for humility in dealing with disagreements with fellow believers rather than jealousy or readiness to emphasize differences. It means humbling oneself before Him, ceasing criticism, accusation, faultfinding and oppression that burden fellow workers, repenting and righting every wrong done to a brother, and letting kindness, love and the spirit of Christ reign through sanctified speech and encouraging words that lift discouraged souls, since the opposite course invites divine punishment.

It means turning from pursuit of high position, dying to self, daily yielding the whole person to God's leading and discipline, seeking the Lord wholeheartedly and letting Jesus be all in all. It is part of what God requires and evidences a living testimony for Christ, involving entrusting the soul to God and letting Jesus work within rather than trying to direct the Holy Spirit. It means communing with God and seeking Him with the whole heart, which keeps a person from shame, and requires treating the soul tenderly without harsh denunciation and being joined to Christ. It means being converted, humbling the heart, being teachable, laying aside confidence in one's own capabilities, wisdom and plans, linking with brethren and receiving their counsel, and turning from unsound theology and alliance with worldly men, which makes one safe and usable in medical missionary work while refusal leaves the foundation to be swept away in testing and brings disrepute on the person and the truth.

It means living without self-exaltation, remaining true to principle, and humbly admitting and confessing wrong when recognized. It means living under His counsel and doing His will, and divine grace sanctifies the heart and character to enable humble righteous service that glorifies God and benefits the sick. It means heeding His counsel and seeking Him in earnest prayer, and those who do so can rely on the Lord as a powerful helper who raises a defense against the enemy. God requires His workers to walk humbly with Him, which means being sanctified in heart and life, ennobled by the truth, enterprising in spirit, and pushing the triumphs of the cross especially by greatly multiplying home mission laborers.

It means working humbly where He has placed a person until the time to leave comes, thereby becoming a blessing to fellow workers while clinging trustingly to God's unfailing strength. It means coming to one's senses with a well-balanced mind, taking up work with sanctified heart and lips, being earnest for the salvation of oneself and one's children, becoming transformed and firmly anchored, humbling the heart until changed, putting all influence on the Lord's side, and showing firm principle rather than impulse, because parental example molds children who copy it. It means daily dependence on Him and on Jesus for help only God can give, which brings safety, and for those entering preaching and missionary work together it means counseling and planning together for the most good, opening Scripture in homes and neighborhoods, and learning from Jesus trustingly and courageously with growing understanding. Humble fellowship with God is better than standing with princes in worldly ways of pride, boasting, intrigue and deception that end in death, while humility opens the heart to faith, peace and love from God, and falsehood and criticism belong to Satan so that those who refuse to grow kind remain unhappy and come under chastening while Christ forms His image in the humble heart and gives peace to those who value and share it.

It means rejecting vanity and self-sufficiency rather than relying on limited human strength, and even when resources are scarce humble dependence brings His blessing. Those who present God's most solemn truth must walk and work humbly with God instead of making themselves central, which places them where the Lord can work with them, while self-exaltation weakens their message, and when their actions, methods and presentation correspond to the truth's importance hearers are convicted that it is the Word of the living God and God's will is accomplished in power. It is a duty expressed as desiring to live humbly before God and seeking the Spirit's guidance at every moment. It means having confidence in God, believing in Christ and living in Him, communing with God and having no angry words with others, and this trust is the great means of success, safety and security because Jesus gives power to resist satanic agencies, keeps what is committed to Him, and carries the trusting person safely through every trial.

Leaders in schools and sanitariums must live in humble dependence on God by being taught daily how to lift the erring and enlighten the ignorant, admitting liability to mistakes and letting God correct their judgment, ministering in Christ's way, exemplifying humility and reliance on higher authority, making seeking and saving the lost their greatest work, studying the Word with diligence and prayer, and fearing lest their example turn the weak out of the way. It means relying on Him through prayer and faith, and in school work humility and faith in Christ as sufficient help make progress possible, deepen consecration, and leave less room for self to come between God and people. It means relying on Him and surrendering to His guidance, which enables learning from Jesus and receiving the Holy Spirit's direction rather than clinging stubbornly to one's own ideas. It is required of those serving Him including conference leaders, and means seeking God directly for counsel and wisely carrying entrusted local responsibilities rather than shifting them to another leader, even in important matters.

Living in humility with God means no one exalts himself above others to dictate to them and rule over them, for God never leads anyone to take such a kingly course. The humble walk belongs to forming character for immortal life and is shown in resisting temptation, living by faith rather than dwelling on trials, speaking pleasant words, and helping and blessing one another. It means living in dependence on Him and doing His will, which God's people in Oakland must do for Him to work for them. It means steadily continuing assigned work without stopping to answer false accusations, seeking interviews with accusers, or waging aggressive self-defense, trusting God while others cut off support, and moving to another opening when not heard and continuing faithful labor there.

It is part of what God requires and is to be lived alongside Christ's meekness and lowliness with faith in God rather than discouraging speech. It means refusing to drive an erring person to desperation or into a corner when he may still repent, refusing to use troubled words to hasten a crisis, acting with serpent wisdom and dove harmlessness, trusting the Spirit to work on minds and leaving much for God to work out. It means bringing consecration into daily practical life with will and way yielded to God's will and way, being honored as a laborer together with God belonging to Christ, reaching a higher standard as sons and daughters of God rather than remaining commonplace professors, aiming at the Gospel's high mark with complete consistent character, and drawing near to God with assurance He will draw near in return. It means that teachers who have faced spiritual danger must guard their steps and avoid returning to ground where Satan can lead them astray.

It means learning from Christ who is meek and lowly, seeking wisdom from God with earnestness and contrition, leaving God free to guide and use each person rather than proudly treating human minds as superior or deciding their worth. It brings God near in whatever He is called upon for, and means going promptly and steadily forward in enterprises for truth, willingly making sacrifices and trusting God who owns the world and commands heaven's resources to supply temporal needs, so that wholehearted service is remembered and no faithful work is in vain. Doing justly, loving mercy and walking humbly before God are what God requires, and God-given wisdom enables doctors and helpers to practice these qualities in dealing with varied characters and circumstances. The Lord requires walking humbly with Him, and those who serve Him, pray and persevere in doing good will be abundantly rewarded, grow confident in His leading, become steadfast, and please God by obedience to all His requirements.

God's people are to walk humbly with Him, and Christ's grace sustains all who do so as they live as a sanctified and purified people and exalt the truth in all their works. After receiving God's blessing people should humbly seek to bless others, do Christ's works and bear fruit unto righteousness, and walking humbly belongs with doing right and living out His goodness, while failure to bless others or running to fitful extremes can turn the blessing into a curse, bring reproach on God's cause and grieve His Spirit. It is part of the life God requires, and humility before God brings favor with associates. The only safety for those living in Battle Creek is acting fairly, loving kindness and staying humble with God, keeping property holdings in houses and land from becoming a snare that leads into crooked paths.

It requires a teacher of truth to guard against self-sufficiency and refuse to strive to be first, and those who walk so have Jesus as helper and are blessed while those who strive to be first become least in God's sight. The only safety for those in positions of responsibility is to walk humbly with God. Physicians, nurses, teachers, and students serving in God's institutions are required to walk humbly with God by trusting wholly and relying wholly on Him as the only one who can make their work successful, so His work moves forward solidly and light shines to glorify Him. It is an individual duty resting on each person.

For college teachers, walking humbly means depending continually on God, refusing to let self rule, and being controlled by God's Spirit. It is part of the life God requires, leads to safe conduct amid dangers, helps prevent giving the enemy advantage, and is practiced by obeying Christ's commands, loving one another, and living in unity. In the work for Boston, God's workers are to walk humbly with Him in service directed by the Holy Spirit, which rules out self-exaltation, avoiding self-exaltation, looking to Jesus, and letting the Holy Spirit direct them, and so the work will be marked by the Spirit's revelation. It means distrusting one's own wisdom and depending on God, and those who do so remain alert to danger and know that God keeps them.

Humility in walking with God is essential in serving Him because without it the Holy Spirit cannot attend human efforts, and it supports keeping God's work simple rather than becoming proud of it. The requirement to love justice and do judgment must be taught to children in the home as a school of instruction rather than monotonous drudgery with evenings cherished for teaching righteousness, so that children patiently instructed understand governing laws and motives, come into harmony with heaven, cherish truth as in Jesus, and are fitted to join angels and stand before the Redeemer, while children left without this fail to comprehend God's truth, and these duties are to be taught within the family as part of bringing children up in the way of the Lord. The verse calls people to go forward in faith while walking humbly before God. It means being holy in heart and life and fully converted rather than half converted, self-confident and self-sufficient, and only a converted ministry that walks humbly has God working with it, seeing His light and having His power aiding its efforts in answer to prayer, while ministers preaching truth without that humility do not have God working with them.

It guards against presumption and falling, and physicians facing temptation and danger must depend on a power greater than their own rather than presuming they can stand alone. The call means workers must avoid self-exaltation, let the Holy Spirit direct their work, and keep looking to Jesus as they serve. Walking humbly before God means living with humility and care in obedience rather than seeking popularity or joining worldly practices His word does not justify. God values obedience and humble walking with Him above displays of human learning or personal pride, and walking humbly and obediently is how a person glorifies Him.

It means refusing discouragement and doing what one can even while sick, lifting where possible instead of acting as if nothing can be done, and such walking brings the Lord's power behind a person with greater strength and opened ways to accomplish good. It means continuing to follow Him and staying close to the Saviour, which brings God's peace through faith and leads in Christ's footsteps toward the life to come, and it belongs with faithfulness to God's sacred law which must not be set aside. It means moving carefully, accepting fewer responsibilities, and trusting that God has many people through whom He will carry out His work. A humble walk means resisting self-exaltation and seeking God's wisdom to be guided in safe paths.

It is a condition for God to work with a person's mind and judgment, as seen in God's recognition of W. C. White's influence and work and promise to work with his judgment if he walks humbly. It is the safe path for oneself and others, meaning rejecting self-directed plans and obeying God, while those with great light endanger themselves and others when they choose their own way. God requires walking humbly before Him, and this humility applies to making prudent well-considered plans for sanitarium work, following God's direction and not assuming that large city buildings are the right way to carry out sanitarium work or prepare cities to hear the gospel. Those entrusted with responsibility must treat everyone justly, love mercy, and live humbly with God, particularly managers of publishing work who must do their duty and deal justly with employees, and no position excuses failure since God remains sovereign over all.

God calls people to walk humbly with Him in fellowship with Christ and in service as a co-worker with God. It is a needed way of life that means approaching Scripture study with humility and Christ's meekness, seeking God's light and learning from Him daily. The verse calls those who manage the publishing work to walk humbly with God and seek wisdom from Him as they carry their responsibilities. Walking humbly before God must be visible in conversation and conduct, expressing the grace and truth within through meekness, kindness, and Christian courtesy, not self-esteem or pomposity.

It is a lesson people must learn, humility means becoming lowly rather than exalting oneself and is required for entering the kingdom of heaven, and those who seek status or the highest place cannot enter. Those who direct others must first train themselves to do justice and love mercy, must not oppress workers or excuse in themselves conduct they would condemn in others, and their dealings should reflect Christlike goodness and faithfulness. It is part of the life God requires, applied to workers who are to put away disruptive traits, be cleansed and purified, and live by correct principles. The call applies to Dr. Maxson and his wife: if they walk humbly and endure testing where they previously failed, the Lord will bless them.

It means refusing to exalt oneself or claim superiority, joining even the humblest people, and seeking God in prayer and faith, and this humble dependence protects against deceptions of evil angels, who seek exaltation and higher places. The call applies to a school's beginning as a resolve to walk in God's ways and keep His charge, doing so brings heaven's light and the Lord's blessing, and it is joined to developing both physical and mental powers in harmony. It means putting self aside, seeking God's way above all, and attending to His directions, reproofs, and commands so each action pleases Him and promotes His glory, a person cannot stand before God in self-reliance or personal righteousness, humility and repentance lead to comfort and assurance, and standing before God requires first humbling oneself at the cross, where reconciliation with God in Christ and Christ's righteousness are received. The verse is a test for people called to serve, especially in responsible positions, to see whether they deal justly, love mercy, and walk humbly, and regarding one's own judgment as infallible fails the test and disqualifies one as a representative of what God requires.

The verse calls the remnant people of God to walk before Him in humility. It is a daily, close relationship with Him in temptation, trial, poverty, sickness, and suffering, doing one's best, relying on God, and seeking His help, to be done day by day and minute by minute, keeping the heart right with God, and without it a person puts confidence in self, becomes self-sufficient, is not right with God, takes on work God has not given, endangers souls, entertains wrong ideas and communicates them to others. It is the opposite of self-exaltation and confidence in one's own abilities, a truly converted person who so walks becomes trustworthy, and without heart change one is unfit for responsibility. It requires constant watchfulness and prayer and willingness to learn from Christ, whose life exemplified meekness and lowliness, and without this humility people may fail to discern wrongdoing and dishonor God.

It is shown in a contrite heart and a life following Christ, with the Holy Spirit bringing sanctification, comfort, and victory over the world, approaching Him with a contrite heart and following in Christ's footsteps, since outward display cannot please God when the heart serves idols and hands are stained by wrongdoing, and those who look to God and follow Christ receive sanctification, comfort, and victory through the Holy Spirit. For the Lord's servants at Berrien Springs, it means serving with contrite hearts, obeying His voice, and heeding the light He has given. Walking humbly before God means relying on Him and following His counsel, and those who do so are strengthened and blessed. It means depending on and trusting in Him, not acting from cowardice, and those who walk in the Lord's way walk securely.

It is cultivating childlike simplicity and maintaining a close, living connection with God, to whom God gives the Holy Spirit and ministers through holy angels to influence minds. The Lord requires walking humbly with Him, which here means not relying on one person's ideas or pursuing impressive large buildings, but carrying out the city mission with sound judgment according to the Lord's direction. It means being willing to learn and be instructed, with prideful self-exaltation standing in the way of that humility, not thinking oneself superior. It is part of what God requires and shapes practical service: workers should begin labor where they see need, relying on connection with God as they learn from His Word and share what they received.

Wise and experienced men who walk humbly with God should serve as His representatives in many places rather than gathering influence and work in one locality. It is possible only by grace and means freedom from the slavery of maintaining personal dignity and reputation, distrusting self, throwing the helpless soul upon Christ, receiving the purity He imparts and the sanctification of the Holy Spirit that alone gives sacredness to work, doing everything with constant realization of living in God's presence, since zeal without true knowledge does not bear God's mark. God requires humility and rightdoing, walking humbly means having a humble heart rather than exalting self, and the Lord promises to clothe those who so walk with Christ's robe of righteousness. Walking humbly and acting according to what He has prospered secures Christ as friend and helper, and this humble walk belongs to discipleship requiring self-denial, cross-bearing, and following Christ.

It is part of the life God requires, and those who humbly work with God receive His grace to share with others. It means living carefully before Him, with humility as part of the character God requires, living constantly as in God's presence, walking humbly before God and brethren, and refusing to place men in the position God alone should occupy because men cannot be trusted, and those who fail to live this way and trust their own wisdom diverge almost imperceptibly by slight degrees from God's straight line, deceive themselves and others, become confused in ideas, and offer strange fire before the Lord. It means living with personal dependence on Him, and those establishing the work in their own locality should trust God to help them plan and act wisely rather than turning first to distant human advisers for wisdom. It is the spirit in which people receive His help and wisdom for work, and those entrusted with responsibilities are fitted to bear them when they seek strength and counsel from God in faith.

It means taking hold of infinite power in dependence while being strong to meet discouragement and difficulty, with increased faith and praise to God as strength, shield, defense, front-guard and rearward, and this is the way to do present duty by letting light shine in Washington through establishing memorials there that hasten the third angel's message to every nation, kindred, tongue, and people. It means doing the work He gives with humility and faithfulness, relying on His strength and speaking His words even when duty is painful or reproof is rejected. It means accepting the work and limits He gives rather than going beyond them, binding His people with human-made yokes, or placing self where God should be, and no person is to control or bind fellow workers. The verse calls for a humble walk with God with self kept out of sight.

It means relying wholly on His promises, which is called for in seeking and saving the lost. It means studying Christ's words and undergoing thorough transformation of character to meet His standard, and without that change people fall short and lead others into false paths causing shipwreck of faith. With humility, meekness, and contrite spirit, it leads one to seek God's recognition rather than insist on recognition for original ideas, and God gives such a person the Holy Spirit's grace to do His intended work according to ability. A person of excellent talent can be useful to God when walking humbly with Him, with humility as the condition for being used to God's glory.

It includes obeying His commandments and bearing the cross daily, bringing knowledge that fits one for both this life and the life to come. It means staying close to Him in one's work and relying on His presence at every step. Walking humbly before the Lord means living under His Spirit's influence and not letting a controlling disposition have power, refusing to withhold knowledge or center work on self, and instead encouraging fellow workers, giving students every opportunity to learn, and training reliable helpers to share burdens. It is seeking the Lord and turning from false human philosophy and science, and His grace comes to those who do so, saving a soul that would otherwise be lost by remaining in that course.

It is one's own part, done by trusting entirely in Jesus instead of becoming discouraged, being emptied of self to be fit for the Master's use, doing one's best with an eye single to God's glory regardless of others' opinions, and waiting patiently for His commendation while He takes charge of all who bring their case to Him. In council and board meetings, it means receiving character mold in Christ's school and learning meekness and lowliness from Jesus, becoming less self-sufficient and self-confident and lower in self-estimate, so fellow workers see Christian brethren seeking to serve where most useful without exaltation, calling for new character and experience to come close to brethren's hearts, guarding against becoming dictatorial, giving orders, or overseeing things not understood, and instead taking hold humbly as learners rather than directors and thus making friends. To walk humbly is to commit one's ways to Him and trust Him to direct one's paths, and following the promptings of the Spirit keeps one from going astray, to walk constantly by living faith that takes God at His word, to be sure Christ is formed within as the hope of glory, to refuse to let opposition or discouraging features depress the soul since discouragement does not glorify God, and while living amid the closing scenes of earth's history to cling to Jesus with all power like Jacob and hold fast to God's promises.

Doing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly rule out domineering behavior, egotism, and inflated opinion of one's own ways, and walking humbly means cultivating Christ's meekness rather than dictating to others, calling for a transformed character marked by kindness, consideration, and respect. It must characterize business transactions to keep spiritual life alive, consisting in seeking Him diligently and serving Him earnestly with implicit trust, recognizing the sacredness of His work and His power to carry it forward, so as not to be found an unprofitable servant. It means those not serving in a foreign field should not presume to direct or criticize the work there, but stay within their own responsibilities and let God work through those on the ground. It means not taking God's place in directing people's minds and consciences, but allowing God to teach, guide, and shape their character.

Humility enlarges spiritual understanding so people recognize the sacred truths, privileges, and duties in Scripture, and it excludes self-exaltation and rivalry, leading to harmony with others and a life reflecting Christ's meekness and humility. To walk humbly is to trust Him fully even when heaven seems as brass, saying though He slay me yet will I trust Him, to have self crucified, let God's love shine in words and works, let the gospel exert strong uninterrupted influence on mind and heart, learn to rejoice in God, and stand firm to principle, and God will bring His purposes to pass for those who so walk. It brings encouragement to receive instruction, but this does not justify prying curiosity about matters not plainly revealed, and attention should remain on what God has made clear. God calls people to walk humbly with Him, and walking humbly with Christ is linked to success in His service and to expressing His image in one's life.

God requires walking humbly with Him, meaning practicing meekness and lowliness rather than a self-made way, and for physicians and Sanitarium workers this means serving with strict integrity and without selfishness in their sacred work. Genuine service requires a humble walk with Him and a life directed toward His glory rather than self, humility is essential to real spiritual experience, and without it religious work becomes empty and self-centered. It means depending on Him rather than human position or power, an office gives no authority to rule others, those carrying responsibility honor God by hiding self in Him and showing faith, and dependence gives wisdom and grace and lets Him communicate His will and work through them. Walking humbly is especially essential as the end of time approaches, meaning following God's example rather than pursuing appearances and living within means with economy rather than spending as though resources were unlimited.

It means awakening, consecrating life to God, laying aside envy and jealousy, becoming humble children of God, cultivating Christ's spirit, and going forth in His service with meekness to warn large cities and the world, laboring for those nearby and giving means to support laborers elsewhere, working hand in hand with God, and God will greatly bless those who do this and they will finally see the King in His beauty. It means going forward in God's fear and giving oneself and the resources entrusted by God to His service. Humble service requires not exalting self but letting the Holy Spirit direct, and humble fellowship with God is accompanied by the Spirit's presence and revelation in the work, as in Boston where avoiding self-exaltation, looking to Jesus and letting the Spirit direct marks the work. Walking humbly before God in a perfect way means keeping firm hold of His hand, and God hears and sees all that is done and said and gives strength, comfort, hope, safe leading, and abiding rest to all who so walk, becoming the joy and rejoicing of the soul.

It takes courage and grace and is done cheerfully. It belongs with doing good, and those who walk with God have a testimony to bear and work to do. It is required of God's people now as the sanctification of the Holy Spirit, preparing them to stand through sharp work and close, trying tests ahead. It means seeking the Lord in humility and trusting Him, accompanying cooperation with God and faithful effort.

It means learning Christ's meekness and lowliness, and in temptation the believer is to look to Jesus and depend on Christ living within, continuing faithfully so others are not led to stumble. A humble walk means depending on His guidance and showing Christ's meekness and lowliness, with humility, prayer, and faith in Jesus as essential to safety. The verse calls people to fear the Lord and walk humbly before Him, with true wisdom not gained by relying on human counsel instead of God. God's servants are to walk humbly before Him, keep His fear before them, and tremble at His word, with humble dependence rather than self-confidence as essential for faithful service and leadership.

The verse calls for walking humbly with God while working, watching, and praying, and for staying at one's work until it is finished. It means hiding self in Christ and no longer making self the mainspring of action or scheming to magnify self, but constantly submitting to His will, placing self wholly under His control, and working as His hand to dispense His gifts, which is all He asks in surrendered obedience, seen in oneness with Christ and giving up all selfish whims and devisings. Walking humbly before God involves feeling how weak human selves are without Him, for one touch of His finger makes that weakness felt. It means rejecting self-esteem and arbitrary authority and letting the Holy Spirit change the heart, and loving mercy rules out hardness and lack of sympathy, so respect, courtesy, and liberality toward faithful workers, especially those who sacrificed in the past, reflect God's mercy, while harsh treatment does not.

It is strength, meaning being true to self and God, living noble, honorable and unselfish, holding passions under control, following His Spirit, hiding self in Jesus, and trusting His love as present help in need, resting in One who never errs in estimating a person but looks at the heart and weighs motives. The verse requires walking humbly with God, which means trusting Him to provide for His workers in Australia, since all things belong to Him. It means putting away pride and repenting of traits that lead to judging others, and those who repent and so walk receive forgiveness, and God works with them in labor for salvation. It, together with prayer, would have saved the Nashville workers from evils caused by departing from God's plain path, and their mistakes should warn against repeating such departures.

Those blessed with Bible truth must walk humbly with God by serving Him wholeheartedly, putting on the whole armor and trusting an omnipotent arm rather than human power, holding fast His counsel and wisdom rather than exchanging it for any person's supposed wisdom, and God has efficiencies in store for human agents given wisdom who need and appreciate it, while picking at defects only makes the critic defective. It is part of what God requires, and Christ's humility in becoming human and accepting an ignominious death shows the need to cultivate humility and guard oneself in every respect. It is the church's only safety, calling each person to take a humble place among fellow believers and surrender fully to God. Staying humble before God means not taking more power and responsibility than He gives, especially by signing human writings binding future business actions, and humility brings His good hand in work, while ambition to carry out one's own plans, being kind or selfish at will, dishonors God and brings oppression as human power is used under past agreements to protect business interests and give financial security.

Humility before God is necessary to avoid stumbling and falling. It means seeking His guidance and asking Him to make the right course of duty clear, seeking His guidance and walking humbly before Him rather than relying on conceit or limited judgment. It means relying on His help and doing one's best in faithful obedience, lived out under trial by standing on the Lord's side and depending on Christ's strength, with eternal life as its promised end. Every person must walk humbly with God in all humility of mind through strict obedience to the commandments, learning Christ's lessons, striving for mastery as an overcomer with deep love for God and one another, and none who so walk will fail but are safe, will not accuse the brethren, and will fulfill Christ's prayer for oneness as He is one with the Father, while self-exaltation and following plans God has not directed endangers spirituality and shipwrecks faith.

It means relying on Christ and keeping to the straight and narrow path with deep discernment and integrity, so as not to be diverted from success, victory, and triumph in the third angel's message. It means rejecting self-sufficiency and depending wholly on the merits of the crucified and risen Savior, and clothed in Christ's righteousness, people may appear before God. It is a privilege and necessary part of faithful service, meaning living by God's precepts daily and shaping speech and actions by the righteousness shown in Christ. It causes growth in grace and knowledge of Christ, and is the condition for succeeding in a providentially appointed position and filling it faithfully.

It is walking trustingly before Him, leaning upon Him as the mighty One with good courage and refusing to fail or become discouraged. The verse requires walking humbly before God, with humility meaning setting aside selfish schemes and putting heart and soul into His work, improving and using God-given abilities in unselfish service for His glory. It is shown in daily, personal communion with Him, making time for prayer to consult God and seek His blessing, and walking and talking with God sustains spiritual power, and the gospel's influence becomes visible in the life, helping truth shine forth. The verse requires doing all possible to save an erring brother by a conciliatory spirit that gives him no occasion to break from the faith, while refusing to sanction wrong, having no fellowship with unfruitful works of darkness, standing firm for truth and righteousness, remembering one's own danger, and walking humbly with God to pass through crisis without sacrificing principle or losing a soul.

Walking humbly before God is part of what God requires, and in work this means proceeding calmly and hiding in the refuge Christ provides. It is necessary, and studying and practicing Christ's lessons and growing in understanding of the sacred truths that come from Christ brings increased light and understanding, which those connected with God's institutions are to do. Learning to walk carefully and humbly before God brings blessing and light and perfects Christian character to be an example to others, and those who have received many privileges and great light have much required of them. It is part of what the Lord requires, and the Lord has promised to guide His people with judgment when they do so.

To walk humbly means giving God the glory instead of taking glory to oneself, not exalting self and not following one's own judgment but following the expressed will of heaven, and when one chosen as God's physician does so the Lord gives continually increasing skill and understanding and greatly honors him so salvation goes forth from his work as a lamp that burns, while following management contrary to heaven's expressed will fails to walk humbly and greatly dishonors God's name before the world, angels, and men. Ambition and oppression conflict with walking humbly and meekly with God, and walking with God means seeking to know and follow His will and way, doing His work with a contrite heart, and practicing justice and judgment. God honors those who walk humbly with Him, and His goodness and truth are eternal so His spoken word will not be altered, and walking humbly comes from studying Christ's life and lessons, seeking the Lord earnestly, being freed from selfish purpose, and faithfully representing His life and character, and the Lord who knows all hearts will bless such ones abundantly. A leader must not treat his own judgment as final or rule by personal opinion, but remain teachable, recognize opinions may be mistaken, and heed counsel God gives through fellow ministers.

It is required of physicians, nurses, teachers, and students as helping institutions move God's work forward solidly, meaning to keep the Lord ever in view and show trust in Him as the only one who can make the work succeed, always exert influence for right, remember even small work is part of God's great plan, glorify His name, and rightly use entrusted capabilities so increased capabilities are given by the One who sees where they will be best used. The call applies to overcoming pride and acknowledging mistakes, as in the case of Fannie who is to be helped to learn this. The call applies to Christian workers and leaders: the Holy Spirit teaches them to subdue self and follow Christ humbly, a leader who refuses to be Christ's humble follower can harm God's cause by lowering the spiritual standard, and work done in a consecrated spirit does not cheapen anyone's experience. It means coming to the Lord in simplicity of faith, without pride or needless display, and relying on Jesus Christ as helpless people.

Acting rightly, loving mercy and walking humbly becomes a pleasure when character is molded by Christ's subduing softening grace through daily learning in His school, growth in grace and knowledge, and freedom from self-sufficiency, self-exaltation, strife and irreverence, becoming humble as little children with His meekness and lowliness dwelling within. The verse defines strength as acting with justice, loving kindness and living in humble fellowship with God where He has placed people in a good pleasant place for His name to be glorified, and forgetting God, losing sense of His attributes and high privileges of light, and failing as His representatives to keep His way and use blessings to bless others causes His Spirit to stop striving. It means living in humble dependence on Him, and the Lord responds to such a walk with loving-kindness and tender mercy. It is part of what God requires, and as a person walks humbly with Him, God becomes that person's strength and healer, as well as wisdom, front guard, and rearward.

It involves seeking His guidance by His Spirit and relying on Him for guidance and protection. The call is a walk of faith connected with realizing the work God has set before His people. It is part of faithful obedience, meaning going straight forward in duty without partiality or hypocrisy, refusing to compromise principle, and not relying on one's own judgment when responsibilities should be shared with wise counselors. Walking humbly before God is part of what God requires, and workers in Maitland facing determined opposition would be made by God into vessels of honor as they walked humbly before Him.

The call applies to earnest work to extend the truth to nearby regions while time is short. It means following His will rather than the will of people, making each step an act of consecration as God leads His people onward. God requires walking humbly with Him, and the church at Battle Creek is called to do this so God may work through it by His Holy Spirit for the salvation of souls. It brings the richest blessings and the Holy Spirit's power on labor for souls, means seeing one's need, humbling oneself, and praying much, and opens the opportunity to work for cities such as Oakland and San Francisco.

The humble walk also requires intelligent choices, and Christ's meekness and lowliness teach the wisdom needed for that walk. People are to walk humbly with God, and as ministers and church members humble themselves before God, He lifts them up and lets His favor shine clearly upon them. It should be a steady way of life, and doing so brings grateful hearts. Walking humbly before God means not seeking to invent new plans but doing what God has appointed in humble dependence on Him, and this enables workers to carry God's plan forward.

It includes learning economy and self-denial, so physicians and ministers should not grasp for the highest wages but sacrifice for the needs of God's work, since demanding high wages and using money extravagantly can weaken influence for good and forfeit God's prospering hand. Humility means seeking counsel with God and others before undertaking costly projects, acting responsibly by settling debts, and choosing a straightforward course that honors God and does not harm others. It is part of what He requires, and the Lord does great good through people who walk humbly with Him. It is part of what God requires, meaning living softly and reverently before Him.

It means distrusting self, resisting self-exaltation, seeking wisdom from God for guidance, and keeping one's ways closely aligned with God's ways and will. It means continuing to trust Him even when others repeat wrongs that caused pain, not letting those actions destroy faith or happiness. It is the deciding question as every case is soon decided in God's dealing with rebellious subjects, meaning obeying God's law from the heart, doing the Word, and expressing Christ in all doings, while office position has no saving virtue and humble walking opposes setting aside God's truth for human traditions. It is part of what God requires, and those who receive Christ's sanctifying grace and so walk gain clear spiritual sight and can gather and reflect divine light for others.

It is needed to remain close to God amid temptation and avoid a false step. It means seeking communion with Him and doing duty without becoming self-centered, applied to one facing disappointment to entrust the trouble to God, accept the experience humbly, and keep serving Him. It means living in continual, loving communion with Him and relying on Christ, while mercy flows from the soul and truth and righteousness shape every action toward others, and God's people are to hold fast to His principles without letting temptation turn them aside. The call is an exhortation to stay close to Christ, and when facing discouragement, continually looking to Jesus helps a person understand His mind and learn to do His will.

A person should walk humbly before God. Everyone, whatever their position, is called to walk humbly with God, requiring submission to God's discipline rather than acting from pride, faultfinding, or an overbearing spirit, and humility also means honoring experienced workers who have served faithfully and respecting the work God has given them. People should walk humbly with God rather than exalt themselves or rely on their own merits, life is to be hidden in Christ, and Christ's way of living in the world shows how to walk without making a mistake. The humble walk brings God's guidance to show His way, and it belongs with being of good courage in the Lord, trusting in the God of salvation, holding fast to the promises, and moving carefully and prayerfully in carrying forward God's work with faithful, God-fearing helpers.

The verse calls for humble obedience to God, and walking humbly means rejecting self-sufficiency, self-confidence, and self-exaltation, trusting God and following His path. God has shown what is good and requires acting justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with Him, and walking humbly is applied to continuing faithfully in the work, relying on Him while carrying out one's work, and the Lord blesses such efforts, works with those who trust Him, and brings salvation. Work for a great city will be marked by the Holy Spirit's power when workers walk humbly with God. God's way calls for humility before Him, meaning obeying His will and ways rather than exalting self, and God exercises power on behalf of those who do so.

Serving God requires walking humbly with Him, and self-exaltation and self-sufficient ideas oppose this humility and hinder God from working with a person. It is part of what God requires and means following Christ, learning from Him, and practicing His lessons, without which people fail to receive the riches of God's grace. Those led by God must walk very humbly before Him, never turning aside from the path of duty He has marked out and refusing to believe falsehoods no matter how abundantly published, even when others are deceived and misleading many, and great spiritual transformation is needed for God to be glorified. Walking humbly before God brings peace and power, and one who sees danger and turns to the Lord receives peace and power by walking humbly before Him.

The call applies to those beginning school work: they are to counsel together, set aside preconceived plans that should not be carried out, and show prudence in life as evidence of sanctification through Christ's grace. To walk humbly is to look to the Lord constantly, trust fully in Him, draw near to Him, be of good courage in Him, and rest in peace with assurance that He has not forsaken you but will help and bless you. Doing what is right and loving mercy honor God, including when facing trouble and opposition, and these qualities are joined with trusting God as a child trusts a parent. The humble walk includes seeking God with the whole heart, turning from cherished inward sins and resentment, and depending on God's Spirit rather than human learning or ability, and the cross brings people to helplessness before God, who lifts them up.

Walking humbly before God brings peace and comfort, and humble fellowship with God brings constant comfort and peace. The work of those serving God is to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with Him, which belongs to leading sinners to salvation and excludes selfish ambition, greed, and any attempt to take God's place or serve as another person's conscience. Walking humbly applies to camp meetings, where working in the spirit of Jesus lets people lay heavy burdens on the great Burden-bearer, and communion with God's love brings triumph, makes the meeting a love feast through assurance of God's presence, and brings a marked display of His glory.

Promise Safety and Judgment

The verse is a plain and definite and rich and full promise upon conditions, not a demand for outward sacrifices such as burnt offerings, thousands of rams, rivers of oil, or even the firstborn for sin, but a showing of what is good and what is required, to do justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with God. When Satan tempts to give up all hope, it is to be pointed to as proof that hope remains for the sinner who complies with its conditions, for its requirements point to the good way in which God guides those who seek Him.

Walking humbly with God is connected with seeing His salvation, and is the way to see it. It means coming to the Lord in full assurance of faith and laying hold of the power of God with persevering faith that never lets go, and those who do so will see the salvation of God. In the critical events and critical times ahead, this humble walk leads God to exalt His own name before the apostate world and vindicate the honor of His cause.

Walking humbly with God is of great value; those who do so gain everything, and God's approval for faithfulness even in small things is worth more than material wealth. Those who walk humbly with God are approved by Him, and only those who so walk are approved. Walking humbly means keeping the whole law, living in fellowship with God that is inseparable from a fragrant, Christlike life whose words do not wound and bruise the soul and embitter the life. Leaders in God's cause must know where they are standing and submit to Christ as the great Leader, building themselves up through Christ in the most holy faith, for the truth of God alone is invincible.

Walking humbly with God is part of what God requires; those who do so while striving to overcome gain daily victories, and work done in humility bears God's approval. Here it calls for a lasting reformation from actions founded on wrong principles, and here it is applied as counsel for becoming strong and overcoming.

Every person needs to walk humbly with God, meaning growing in grace and in knowledge of God and Jesus Christ, looking unto the Saviour and beholding with open face as in a glass the glory of the Lord to be changed into the same image from glory to glory by the Spirit. As Christ works with the believer and the believer abides in Him, the life reveals perfection of character and believers are made perfect in one. Walking humbly means putting on the Lord Jesus Christ, seeing that of self nothing can be done and no one can atone for his own sins, and through faith purifying the soul from all dross and revealing the righteousness of Christ, which is of God by faith.

Walking humbly with God puts a person on vantage ground. Without that humble walk a person is left lost in misconceptions long cherished, unbalanced in mind, and open to Satan's theories, deceiving his own soul and then bewildering the minds of others. Walking humbly means following His way and doing His will, and God goes before those who do so, helps them do faithful work, and brings them happiness, honor, and usefulness.

A clear conscience accompanies dealing justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with God. Those who walk humbly with God are open to the Holy Spirit's instruction in divine truth and are enabled to present God's Word with power. Those who receive Christ's sanctifying grace and walk humbly with God gain clear spiritual sight and can gather and reflect divine light for others. Walking humbly is strength for daily life, and those who so walk gain light to reflect to others.

Walking humbly before God is part of what He requires; as people walk humbly before Him, He reveals Himself to them. It means relying on Him while carrying out one's work; the Lord blesses such efforts, works with those who trust Him, and brings salvation. As a person walks humbly with Him, God becomes that person's strength, wisdom, front guard, and rearward, and the walk involves seeking God's guidance by His Spirit and relying on Him for guidance and protection. God requires living justly, loving mercy, and walking humbly with Him, and walking humbly brings His help, strength, and peace, presenting Him as strength and healer.

Safety lies in walking humbly with God. This means guarding against self-sufficiency and self-confidence, keeping self out of sight, and seeking a daily, living experience with God. It is essential to safety from sin and Satan's deceptions, calling for constant watchfulness lest selfishness and hidden sin gain control and lead astray, with willingness to learn from Christ whose life exemplified meekness and lowliness, without which people may fail to discern wrongdoing and dishonor God. It means distrusting one's own wisdom and depending on God, by which those who do so remain alert to danger and know that God keeps them, and it is the way to avoid presumption and falling, for physicians and all facing temptation must depend on a power greater than their own rather than presuming they can stand by themselves.

Walking humbly with God brings constant comfort and peace. One who sees danger and turns to the Lord receives peace and power by walking humbly before Him. It brings the richest blessings and the Holy Spirit's power on labor for souls, meaning seeing one's need, humbling oneself, and praying much, and it opens opportunity to work for cities such as Oakland and San Francisco. That humble walk brings God's guidance to show His way, belonging with being of good courage in the Lord, trusting in the God of salvation, holding fast to the promises, and moving carefully and prayerfully in carrying forward God's work with faithful, God-fearing helpers. It brings favor with associates, and the Lord promises favor with others to those who serve with contrite hearts, obey His voice, and heed the light He has given.

The only safety for those living in Battle Creek is acting fairly, loving kindness, and staying humble with God, keeping property holdings in houses and land from becoming a snare to the soul that leads feet into crooked paths. The only safety for those in positions of responsibility is to walk humbly with God. It is the church's only safety, calling each person to take a humble place among fellow believers and to surrender fully to God.

Walking humbly with God is the deciding question when every case is soon decided as God deals with His rebellious subjects. It means obeying the law of God from the heart, being a doer of the Word, and having Christ expressed in all doings, while position in office has no virtue to save the soul and stands opposed to setting aside God's truth by human traditions. It is required of God's people now as the sanctification of the Holy Spirit, preparing them to stand through sharp work and close and trying tests ahead.

To walk humbly with God means to walk with Him constantly by a living faith that takes God at His word, to be sure that Christ is formed within as the hope of glory, to refuse to let opposition or discouraging features depress the soul since discouragement does not glorify God, and, while living amid the closing scenes of earth's history, to cling to Jesus with all power like Jacob and hold fast to the promises of God. People already know what God calls good: to act justly, love mercy, and live humbly with God, and walking humbly is especially essential as the end of time approaches. In this setting humility includes recognizing limits, living within available means, following God's example rather than pursuing appearances, and practicing economy rather than spending as though resources were unlimited.
