Nahum 2:2
For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches. For the LORD hath turned away the excellency of Jacob, as the excellency of Israel: for the emptiers have emptied them out, and marred their vine branches.
Nahum chapters 2 and 3 are God's prophecy concerning Nineveh, Assyria's wicked capital, predicting the fall of Nineveh and the end of Assyrian power. Nineveh serves as a type of many later cities. The verse means Assyria would be brought down and Nineveh would fall.
The verse says the Lord restored Jacob's former greatness, as Israel's, after enemies had plundered them and devastated their land, pictured as emptied vine branches. The prediction was fulfilled when Assyria yielded to the united and superior power of its former dependencies Media, Egypt, and Babylonia, so that Nineveh fell. After the fall, Babylon arose again from its former vassalage to proud Nineveh to ascendancy. That renewed ascendancy under Nabopolassar became empire under Nebuchadnezzar at the time of Daniel 1.
Nahum 2:2-5 describes the rapid movement of modern trains and their crowded, jostling cars as a sign of the approaching final events and the day of the Lord's preparation. The verse shows Jacob's vine branches marred by pride, covetousness, love of the world, and self-esteem, which lead professed followers of Christ to forget God's requirement to come out from the world and be separate.
