Nahum 3:12
All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater. All thy strong holds shall be like fig trees with the firstripe figs: if they be shaken, they shall even fall into the mouth of the eater.
Nahum's prophecy was given in the latter days of Isaiah and is chiefly concerned with Nineveh, the wicked capital city of Assyria, which is a type of many later cities. Its strongholds are like trees with ripe early figs that fall easily into the mouth of the eater when slightly or first shaken, showing how readily the defenses will collapse and be captured. The verse is part of God's prediction of Nineveh's fall. That fall was fulfilled when the city was overcome by the combined power of Media, Egypt, and Babylonia.
A tree terribly shaken is left without fruit. This fits the buttonwood tree shaken throughout the land before 1842. It became nearly fruitless yet remained alive in its barren state, and its continued life despite barrenness fits the prophecy.
