Chariot Charges Through Burning Ninevehby emmanuel_higgins

Nahum 3:2

The noise of a whip, and the noise of the rattling of the wheels, and of the pransing horses, and of the jumping chariots.

The verse portrays noisy, forceful military movement through cracking whips, rattling wheels, prancing horses, and bounding chariots. The cracking, rattling, prancing, and surging forward convey the clamor, noise, and force of armed action. In one sense it depicts Nineveh's own violence and armed aggression. In another sense it depicts the violent military assault enacting the city's coming judgment upon Nineveh.

The passage belongs to the prophecy of Nineveh's destruction in Nahum 3:1-7, which came after its people returned to idolatry. God had threatened to destroy Nineveh, but the inhabitants repented and their destruction was averted. When they turned once more to idolatry and their sins reached to heaven, their destruction came.
