Nehemiah 10:21

Meshezabeel, Zadok, Jaddua,

Nehemiah 10:21 stands in the period after the return from captivity when intermarriage between Israelites and the nations around them had become widespread. The children of these mixed marriages spoke a corrupted, half-foreign speech in which the Hebrew language was losing its purity. For that reason the public reading of God's law could not be left to be heard alone, but had to be carefully explained and made plain so the people could understand what was read.
