Nehemiah 10:28
And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding;
The enumeration belongs to the gathering of the people at Jerusalem for the Feast of Trumpets. At that assembly Ezra blessed God, and the people answered with amen, bowed their heads, and worshiped.
Those counted as the rest of the people include the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, and the Nethinims. With them are joined their wives, their sons, and their daughters. All are described as having separated themselves from the peoples of the lands unto the law of God, and as every one having knowledge and having understanding. Because intermarriage had corrupted the Hebrew speech, the law had to be explained in the people's own language so they could grasp what was read.
