Nehemiah 10:32
Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God; Also we made ordinances for us, to charge ourselves yearly with the third part of a shekel for the service of the house of our God;
In Nehemiah's time the congregation pledged and charged themselves yearly with a stated sum for the service of the house of God, the sanctuary. That yearly charge continued Moses' direction that as often as the people were numbered each should give a half shekel for the service of the tabernacle. The tithe, by contrast, was devoted exclusively to the Levites set apart for sanctuary service.
The yearly sum was distinct from and in addition to the tithe. Contributions for religious purposes were therefore by no means limited to the tithe. Its purpose was provision to support the public worship of God, providing for necessary repairs and other expenses.
