Nehemiah 10:36

Also the firstborn of our sons, and of our cattle, as it is written in the law, and the firstlings of our herds and of our flocks, to bring to the house of our God, unto the priests that minister in the house of our God:

The pledge was part of a solemn covenant in which Israel committed itself to return to the Lord by providing for public worship. That covenant bound the whole congregation, not merely its leaders, to sustain the services of the sanctuary. Alongside the tithe and a yearly fixed sum for the service of the sanctuary, the people pledged the firstborn of their sons and of their cattle. They also pledged the firstlings of their herds and of their flocks, to be brought to the house of God to the priests ministering there, as written in the law.
