Nehemiah 12:13

Of Ezra, Meshullam; of Amariah, Jehohanan;

The verse names representatives of priestly families, Meshullam for Ezra and Jehohanan for Amariah, serving after the return from the Babylonian captivity. It belongs to the account of the dedication of Jerusalem's restored walls. That dedication was a joyful thanksgiving marked by singing, music, and sacrifices, together with the purification of the priests, the Levites, and the people.

It stands in the record of Nehemiah's work in Jerusalem dated to about 446-408, identified as the last reform on his return to Jerusalem. In that work Nehemiah acted always with the highest good of Jerusalem in mind. He was impatient toward the people for slackness in doing God's work and indignant toward those sinning against God by uniting with heathen peoples and even bringing them into the temple itself. He stood for God because the city was the Lord's city and the people were the Lord's people.
