Nehemiah 13:28

And one of the sons of Joiada, the son of Eliashib the high priest, was son in law to Sanballat the Horonite: therefore I chased him from me.

During Nehemiah's absence in Persia, intermarriage united the family of Eliashib the high priest in friendship and unhallowed alliance with Sanballat and Tobiah the Ammonite, bitter enemies of Israel. That union was made in defiance of God's command through Moses that Ammonites and Moabites should forever be shut out of the congregation, and it revealed contempt for God and His truth. The alliance profaned the temple itself, for an enemy of Israel was given a dwelling in its precincts, while the tithes and offerings were cast out to make room for him. Upon his return Nehemiah acted promptly and chased the intruder away, casting all his household goods out of the chamber and cleansing it, so that the vessels of God's house could be restored there with the meat offering and the frankincense.
