Nehemiah 13:6

But in all this time was not I at Jerusalem: for in the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon came I unto the king, and after certain days obtained I leave of the king:

Nehemiah was not at Jerusalem during this time, for he had gone back to the king in Persia. This absence is dated to the two and thirtieth year of Artaxerxes king of Babylon, when he came unto the king, and after certain days obtained leave of the king to return. For a time the people were left without the restraining influence of Nehemiah and Ezra.

During his absence many departed from the Lord as evils crept in. Harmful practices and disorder took hold in Jerusalem. These developments threatened to pervert the nation, showing the danger of leaving the community for a time without faithful oversight.
