Nehemiah 13:7
And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God. And I came to Jerusalem, and understood of the evil that Eliashib did for Tobiah, in preparing him a chamber in the courts of the house of God.
Nehemiah came back to Jerusalem from Persia after being absent, at a time when the restraining influence of both Ezra and himself had been withdrawn and evils had crept in among the people. The evil he then perceived centered on Eliashib, who was the high priest, and Tobiah, who was the Ammonite. Tobiah was a bitter enemy of Israel and of God and His truth, belonging to a race forever shut out from the congregation of God's people.
A friendship had grown up between Eliashib and Tobiah through intermarriage, forming an unhallowed alliance between them. In that alliance Eliashib emptied out the tithes and offerings of the people that were stored in the temple chamber in order to prepare a room for Tobiah in the courts of the house of God. By conferring such favor on an enemy of God, Eliashib showed greater contempt for God than could otherwise have been shown, giving idolaters a foothold and contaminating the very precincts of the temple.
