Nehemiah 3:27

Nehemiah 3:27 belongs to the time when Nehemiah arrived in Jerusalem in safety, bearing royal letters to the governors along his route and accompanied by a military escort. Under the power of the Persian king he was received with honor and given prompt assistance by the provincial rulers. His coming on an important mission stirred the jealousy of the heathen tribes near the city, foremost Sanballat the Horonite, Tobiah the Ammonite, and Geshem the Arabian. These enemies had often shown enmity against the Jews by injury and insult, and from the first they watched his movements with critical eyes to thwart his plans and hinder his work.
