Nehemiah 4:14
And I looked, and rose up, and said unto the nobles, and to the rulers, and to the rest of the people, Be not ye afraid of them: remember the Lord, which is great and terrible, and fight for your brethren, your sons, and your daughters, your wives, and your houses.
Nehemiah's call was given while Jerusalem's ruined walls were being rebuilt under enemy threat, as the people stood guard over the wall with weapons ready. It commanded nobles, rulers, and the rest of the people not to be afraid of their enemies but to remember the Lord as great and terrible in greatness and power. That remembrance was to move them to fight for their brethren, their sons and daughters, their wives, and their houses.
Trust in God was thus joined with watchfulness and action, so that courage was expressed in readiness to fight and in continuing the work armed as they built. After God brought the enemies' plans to nothing, the people returned to the work.
The same words give the fearless answer of faithful, undaunted builders upon the true foundation when, even if perplexed, the work is obstructed by rubbish of false doctrine and hindered by persecution, fraud, iniquity, and every obstacle Satan devises. They call such workers to refuse fear of enemies, to remember the Lord, and to resist opposition fearlessly without turning away from the true foundation to seek peace and security for property and life. While others become disheartened and turn away, those who hold fast stay vigilant and faithful and proceed with the building undaunted, every worker with his sword girded by his side.
