Nehemiah 6:17

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters unto Tobiah, and the letters of Tobiah came unto them.

Moreover in those days the nobles of Judah sent many letters to Tobiah, and Tobiah's letters came to them, and Tobiah was an enemy and opponent of the work of rebuilding in Jerusalem. Their extensive correspondence reflected their ties to him through idolatrous marriages. They were bound to him by an oath of loyalty.

They were disloyal to God's work, serving Tobiah's interests and aiding his schemes against Nehemiah. By their correspondence they disclosed Nehemiah's plans and movements to the enemy, putting the work at risk and exposing it to attack and obstruction. Their disloyal cooperation helped spread distrust of Nehemiah, including the false report that he intended to make himself king.
