Nehemiah 7:26

The men of Beth-lehem and Netophah, an hundred fourscore and eight.

The reckoning is a record of names and numbers of those who came back from captivity. Its entry gives the count of the men of Bethlehem and Netophah. It belongs to the renewed giving of the number of the Jews in B.C. 444.

That renewed numbering came after the wall was finished in fifty-two days, a work which even their enemies perceived to have been wrought of God, and after proper officers and watches were appointed. It came after oppression among the brethren had been settled by rebuke and by covenant and restitution. It came after Sanballat, Geshem and Tobiah had failed to draw Nehemiah away, when he refused to come down because he was doing a great work. As part of such a list it states no expressed promise.
