Nehemiah 7:6

These are the children of the province, that went up out of the captivity, of those that had been carried away, whom Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon had carried away, and came again to Jerusalem and to Judah, every one unto his city;

Nehemiah 7:6 stands in the listing of the people by genealogy, made when Nehemiah gathered the nobles and rulers and people together to be reckoned after the wall and the gates of Jerusalem were completed. It belongs to the renewed giving of the number of the Jews after that work was done.

At that time the city was still sparsely populated and its houses were not yet rebuilt, while enemies remained active, so watchmen were posted around the wall. The wall had been finished in fifty-two days, and proper officers and watches were then appointed. This renewed numbering took place in B.C. 444, after oppression among the brethren had been settled by rebuke and covenant and restitution, and after the plots of Sanballat and Geshem and Tobiah had been defeated.
