Nehemiah 9:11
And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters. And thou didst divide the sea before them, so that they went through the midst of the sea on the dry land; and their persecutors thou threwest into the deeps, as a stone into the mighty waters.
It was Christ who divided the sea before Israel, so that they went through the midst on dry land while their persecutors were thrown into the deeps as a stone into mighty waters. In doing this He acted as Israel's Redeemer, Protector, and wonder-working God. That same presence led them enshrouded in the pillar of cloud by day and the pillar of fire by night to guide them through the wilderness. He spoke from heaven at Sinai to give right judgments, true laws and the holy Sabbath, gave bread from heaven for their hunger and water from the rock for their thirst, and sustained them forty years so that they lacked nothing.
In Nehemiah 9 this deliverance belongs to a rehearsal of the Lord's works and goodness in behalf of His people, joined with an exposure of their turning from God and past ingratitude. It was recalled as the people confessed and pledged to obey His law. Yet those miracles did not save them, because they dealt proudly, hardened their necks, refused to obey His will, rebelled, and cast His law behind their backs.
Their sins separated them from God, so He permitted them to be brought under the control of heathen nations, showing that He would not serve with their sins. Mighty works without the love of God in the heart and willing obedience leave the rebellious spirit unchanged. It was the same spirit later seen in those who rejected Christ when He came in person.
