Nehemiah 9:23
Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it. Their children also multipliedst thou as the stars of heaven, and broughtest them into the land, concerning which thou hadst promised to their fathers, that they should go in to possess it.
God kept His promise to the fathers by multiplying their children as the stars of heaven and bringing them into the land to possess it, leading them in to take possession as He had said they should go in to possess it. He first gave Israel kingdoms and nations, including the lands of Sihon and Heshbon and Og king of Bashan, and then He led the next generation in. He subdued the Canaanites before them and gave them strong cities and a fat land, with houses, wells, vineyards, oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance.
This stands as one of the Lord's works in behalf of His people and belongs to a recounting of His goodness joined with confession of Israel's pride and hardened necks, rebellion and idolatry, ingratitude and turning from God. Their turning separated them from God, and He permitted them to be brought under the control of heathen nations, for He would not serve with their sins, showing His just dealings with them.
Read after the giving of the law, this recounting exemplifies a deep work of repentance and return to the Lord. Its representation of great mercy despite pride, hardened necks, rebellion, and idolatry is to be presented to the people as occasion requires. It is to be used to stand boldly in defense of the truth, which will otherwise be perverted into strong representations of evil unless there is decided reformation among those in positions of influence.
