Nehemiah 9:24
So the children went in and possessed the land, and thou subduedst before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites, and gavest them into their hands, with their kings, and the people of the land, that they might do with them as they would.
God multiplied Israel as the stars of heaven and brought the children into the land He had promised to their fathers that they should go in to possess. They went in and possessed the land because He subdued before them the inhabitants of the land, the Canaanites with their kings and the people of the land, and gave them into their hands to do with them as they would. By that gift they took strong cities and a rich and fat land with houses full of goods, dug wells, vineyards, oliveyards and fruit trees in abundance, so they ate and were filled and delighted themselves in His great goodness.
The verse belongs to a repeating and retelling of the Lord's works, goodness and acts of favor in behalf of His people for whom He had done so much, recalled alongside their ingratitude. That retelling includes His right judgments, true laws, holy Sabbath, provision of manna and water, forty-year sustaining, mercy, pardon and deliverance despite pride, rebellion, calf-worship and law-breaking. Set with the pointing out of their sins, it shows the people turned from God and failed to appreciate His favor through disobedience, rebellion, casting His law behind their backs, killing His prophets and working great provocations.
Their later calamities therefore came from themselves, for God would not serve with their sins and their sins separated them from Him, so He delivered them and permitted them to be brought under the control of enemies and heathen nations who vexed them and had dominion over them. Living to please self instead of pleasing God and doing His will brings sorrow and disaster, while heeding His word and warnings would have saved them. The representation is to be presented to the people as occasion requires to stand boldly in defense of the truth, which will be perverted more and more into strong representations of evil unless there is decided reformation among those in positions of influence.
