Nehemiah 9:25

And they took strong cities, and a fat land, and possessed houses full of all goods, wells digged, vineyards, and oliveyards, and fruit trees in abundance: so they did eat, and were filled, and became fat, and delighted themselves in thy great goodness.

Nehemiah 9:25 belongs to the record of the Lord's works for His people set against their turning from Him, a history of God's goodness and the people's ingratitude. It shows God subduing the Canaanites with their kings and peoples before Israel. It shows God giving Israel strong cities and a rich, fertile land with houses full of goods, dug wells, vineyards, oliveyards, abundant fruit trees and provisions, so they ate and were filled and delighted in His great goodness. Their prosperity was His gift.

In light of that abounding goodness their guilt is plain, for they lived to please themselves and not to please God and do His will. They did not properly value His favors or give Him the glory due to His name, illustrating how a people richly blessed by God can fail to appreciate those blessings. Their sins separated them from Him and led to their being brought under the control of heathen nations. Their disobedience and rebellion against God and casting His law behind them caused the sorrows, disasters and vexation by enemies that came upon them, and had they heeded His word and respected His warnings they would have been saved from those calamities.
