Numbers 10:12
And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran. And the children of Israel took their journeys out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud rested in the wilderness of Paran.
The departure from Sinai began at the signal of the trumpets. Travel and encampment were directed by God through the cloud, which rested over the tabernacle where He wanted the people to camp, and they remained there until He signaled that they should journey again. The entire camp moved forward together in appointed order, with the tabernacle borne in the midst and each tribe in its appointed position under its own standard. All eyes were turned anxiously to see where the cloud would lead. It moved toward the east where only black and desolate mountain masses lay, which brought sadness and doubt into many hearts.
Christ was the invisible Leader and Teacher of more than a million people His own hand had delivered from Egyptian bondage, giving them the purest and strongest intelligence as higher education in their journeys out of Sinai to Paran. The march was a lesson in order, unity, and discipline, with every person assigned a part and no idlers allowed, following where their educators led.
They learned the commandments of God set to song and sang as they journeyed step by step under special directions given through Moses to responsible men. The journey trained the whole being for practical service to God in being pure, clean, and holy in obeying all His commandments, giving young and old through forty years of wilderness wandering a variety of exercises demanding brain, bone, and muscle. Every lesson was preserved in writing by Moses to be given to the people in their travels.
