Numbers 10:35

And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said, Rise up, LORD, and let thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate thee flee before thee.

The ark containing God's law led the way ahead of the people when Israel journeyed. Every time the ark set forward, Moses solemnly prayed for the Lord to rise up, scatter His enemies, and make those who hate Him flee before Him. This invocation marked the people's departure.

A companion prayer asking the Lord to return to the many thousands of Israel marked the halt when the ark rested. God Himself directed when each prayer was spoken by the pillar of cloud, which rested over the tabernacle while Israel was to remain encamped and lifted high above the sacred tent when they were to continue their journey.

The prayer shows Israel's journeys were directed by God under His leadership and protection, with the Lord going before His people against their enemies.
