Numbers 11:24

And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD, and gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the tabernacle.

Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord, then gathered the seventy men of the elders of the people and set them round about the tabernacle to prepare them to receive the Spirit. The Lord came down in a cloud and took of the Spirit that was upon Moses and gave it unto the seventy elders. When the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied and did not cease.

Their prophesying foretold the work and mission of Christ. Their wisdom and fluent speech showed that God's power was upon them. This public giving of the prophetic gift prepared them for their work and established the people's confidence in them as men divinely chosen to share authority with Moses in governing Israel. It was a sign that God had chosen them to unite their authority with that of Moses and assist him in subduing the murmurings of the people during the wilderness sojourn, and thus to ease the task upon Moses.

They were gathered to help Moses carry his burden of leadership, and with the spirit of counsel given to them they became safe counsellors to assist him in his responsible work. The verse belongs to the wilderness account in which God gave Israel manna from heaven, angels' food, but they were dissatisfied, murmured and mourned, and demanded flesh meat. The Lord granted their desire and gave the vast multitude meat and quails in abundance to satisfy their appetite.

Eating brought judgment for lust and rebellion, with many dying while eating and thousands destroyed by plague while the flesh was still between their teeth, and God did not work a miracle to preserve life. In that wilderness judgment nearly all who left Egypt died in the wilderness. In that episode Moses was tempted to take for himself glory that belonged to God. The account teaches temperance in eating and drinking, and that becoming health reformers gives clearer minds to discern what affects the salvation of the soul.
