Numbers 11:26

But there remained two of the men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad: and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were written, but went not out unto the tabernacle: and they prophesied in the camp.

The setting is the wilderness journey, when a people greatly favored by God and being led toward Canaan rejected the manna He provided and craved meat. In anger at their lusting for meat He gave them meat to satisfy appetite, and many died even while eating it, as a warning that appetite must not control God's people. Their demand was followed by a plague that killed thousands. Nearly all who had left Egypt died in the wilderness, and indulgence of appetite contributed to their defeat.

Eldad and Medad were among the seventy elders chosen and written down to assist Moses, yet they remained in the camp instead of going out to the tabernacle. They stayed away because they felt and counted themselves unworthy, not because they were rebellious. The Spirit rested upon them there in the camp, and they prophesied there. In that prophesying they spoke with wisdom and eloquence.

Their prophesying in the camp shows that God's Spirit and the prophetic gift were not confined to the tabernacle. Their humility in feeling unworthy did not prevent God from using them. Their experience prompted Moses to wish that all the Lord's people would receive His Spirit and prophesy. Moses welcomed their gift and was not jealous over authority or concerned for his own honor.

Even while Eldad and Medad and many others prophesied, Moses held a leading position that no others took. Their prophecies were not published for general circulation. Beyond the fact that they prophesied in the camp, no further explanation of their prophecy is given.

The verse does not mean that the time has come when all who are in right relation to God can have the gift of prophecy to the same extent as those who have visions, with God speaking to each only for his own benefit. Teaching universal prophecy from it prepares the way for Satan to bring in spurious exercises, which lead unbalanced minds into fanaticism and give designing persons opportunity to further selfish purposes.
