Numbers 15:2

Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them, When ye be come into the land of your habitations, which I give unto you,

Numbers 15 stands among the instructions given to Israel during the events covered in Numbers 10–16. It opens with direction for what Israel was to observe only after coming into the land of their habitations which God would give them, the promised land entered in the future. That future observance was the ceremonial system of types and shadows, distinct from the moral law. The laws so introduced include those for meal offerings, drink offerings, and offerings for sins of ignorance.

Sins committed in ignorance are still sins and require atonement, yet they can be atoned for. By contrast, the same chapter treats a Sabbath-breaking offense as presumptuous sin.
