Sabbath Stick Gatherer Brought Before Mosesby KandD

Numbers 15:33

And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation.

The verse records a man found gathering sticks or wood on the Sabbath to make a fire, doing unnecessary work against the Lord's commandment, who was wilfully brought before Moses and Aaron and all the congregation and then taken outside the camp, cut off from the people and put to death by stoning.
The gathering was not done in ignorance but in knowing, wilful, high-handed and deliberate rebellion.
The Sabbath was made for man, for his benefit.
Knowingly working on the seventh day in transgression of the holy commandment is a crime of great magnitude in the sight of Heaven, the offender being deemed unworthy to live, which proves God is very particular regarding observance of His holy law.

Under the Mosaic law that magnitude required the death of the offender, and that death did not end the punishment, for God will not take a transgressor of His law to heaven; the offender must suffer temporal and eternal death, the second death, which is the full and final penalty for transgressing the law of God.
The same principle of knowing, high-handed breaking applies to violation of the seventh commandment.
The civil death penalty by stoning is not now required, but its abolition does not make the sin small.

The verse now requires a strict, thorough course that removes God's frown and curse from the camp by suspending the offender from fellowship and the privileges of the house of God.
To treat confession alone as enough and receive the offender lightly corrupts the young, disgraces the cause, and brings God's wrath so He will not dwell in the assemblies.
The sin is exceedingly sinful now because God is purifying unto Himself a peculiar people zealous of good works.
A time is coming when each must answer for every disregard of God's law, leaving a solemn duty to study how to observe the Sabbath of the Lord and to teach others its sacredness.
