And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the coast of the land of Edom, saying,
The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron at Mount Hor by the border of the land of Edom. That speech declared Aaron's end, appointing Mount Hor as the place for his death and burial. He was to die there and not enter the promised land because he and Moses had sinned at Meribah in bringing water from the rock.
With Aaron went up the mountain Moses, his brother, and Eleazar, his son, for God had appointed Eleazar to succeed Aaron in the priesthood. Before Aaron died Moses performed the painful duty of removing the priestly, sacerdotal robes from his brother and placing them upon Eleazar. By that act the sacred office was transferred, and Eleazar then came back down the mountain with Moses.
Moses and Eleazar witnessed Aaron's death, and Moses buried him on the mountain, with Aaron's sons taking part in the burial. Burial on the mountain kept the people from making too great, excessive ceremony over his body and being guilty of idolatry, of falling into idolatry. This scene on Mount Hor connects back to some of the most striking events in Aaron's life.
