Numbers 21:25

And Israel took all these cities: and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the villages thereof.

After defeating Sihon the Amorite king, Israel took all the cities of the Amorites and dwelt in them, in Heshbon and in all its villages and surrounding cities. The taking and dwelling was a destruction of the Amorites and a taking possession of their land and country. The victory and possession came by the Lord's command and help under Moses' leadership, with the divine presence leading them and the Lord's host defeating Israel's enemies. Unlike their earlier defeat, Israel trusted God and advanced as commanded, and those recent triumphs showed God's power on Israel's behalf.

Israel could have gained possession of the land thirty-eight years earlier if they had trusted and obeyed God. The conquest of the Amorites and Bashan gave Israel possession of rich territory and renewed confidence that God was prospering them.

The victory proved Israel a powerful people. Coming just before Israel moved forward to camp in the plains of Moab on this side of Jordan by Jericho, it exceedingly terrified Balak and all Moab and drove Balak to send for Balaam to curse Israel. The slaying of two kings east of the Jordan before entering Canaan, together with the miraculous passage over the swollen and impetuous Jordan, filled the kings of the Amorites and the kings of the Canaanites with melting fear.
