And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kirjath-huzoth.
In the verse Balak is leading Balaam from one point to another in the vain hope of getting him to turn the blessing of Israel into a curse. The moving from place to place is a deliberate conducting by the king of Moab, seeking by change of position what he could not gain by direct demand. His failure proves that such maneuvering cannot reverse what God has blessed, no matter how persistently it is tried.
The same failure shows that repeated interviews, familiar intercourse, human applause, and the fear of man are alike powerless to shake one who is sustained by divine power. Balak succeeded no better against Balaam in this respect than later opponents succeeded against Luther in his steadfastness. Steadfastness under God therefore stands firm against both flattery and intimidation, however often or closely they are pressed.
