Numbers 24:16

He hath said, which heard the words of God, and knew the knowledge of the most High, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:

Balaam is presented as one who heard the words of God, knew the knowledge of the Most High, and saw the vision of the Almighty, fallen in trance yet with eyes open, receiving supernatural knowledge. Balak repeatedly brought him to different places in hope that he would turn Israel's blessing into a curse, but the blessing could not be changed by those efforts. In the vision God unfolded before him future events concerning Israel, which he beheld prophetically. What he had seen he then rehearsed to Balak and his princes.

He was amazed and astonished at the coming display of God's power that was shown to him. The prophecy that follows announces a Star coming out of Jacob and a Scepter rising out of Israel, a ruler coming out of Jacob who shall have dominion. That coming ruler is the world's Redeemer.

The vision revealed Israel's eventual triumph. The same prophecy also announces the final destruction of God's enemies.
